Hematopoiesis is maintained by the interaction of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in bone marrow microenvironments, called niches. Certain genetic mutations in MSCs, not HSCs, provoke some hematopoietic neoplasms, such as myelodysplastic syndrome.
