Project description:Diet plays a critical role for patients across the cancer continuum. The World Cancer Research Fund International and the American Cancer Society have published evidence supporting the role of nutrition in cancer prevention. We conducted an analysis of the literature on dietary nutrients and cancer to uncover opportunities for future research. The objective of the bibliometric analysis was to describe trends in peer-reviewed publications on dietary components and cancer and to highlight research gaps. PubMed was queried for manuscripts with diet- and cancer-related keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms. Metadata covering 99,784 publications from 6469 journals were analyzed to identify trends since 1970 on diet topics across 19 tumor types. Publications focused largely on breast, colorectal, and liver cancer, with fewer papers linking diet with other cancers such as brain, gallbladder, or ovarian. With respect to "unhealthy" diets, many publications focused on high-fat diets and alcohol consumption. The largest numbers of publications related to "healthy" diets examined the Mediterranean diet and the consumption of fruits and vegetables. These findings highlight the need for additional research focused on under-investigated cancers and dietary components, as well as dietary studies during cancer therapy and post-therapy, which may help to prolong survivorship.

Project description:IntroductionCancer research is critical for cancer control policies; however, the state of cancer research activities in Botswana is largely unknown. The goal of this review was to describe trends and patterns of cancer research outputs in Botswana.MethodsPubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, African Journals Online, and African Index Medicus databases were systematically searched for peer-reviewed, primary cancer-related research articles published on the Botswana population or by Botswana institutions between January 2009 and June 2021.ResultsOf the 86 publications included, 39 (45 %) were about cervical cancer, followed by breast cancer (10 %) and Kaposi sarcoma (7 %). The remainder (27 %) were not focused on any specific cancer type. The research activities were skewed towards three main areas of scientific interest: early detection, diagnosis, and prognosis; cancer control, survivorship, and outcomes; and treatment. Botswana was represented by authors in the first (54 %), last (53 %), and any authorship (53 %) positions. The United States of America had the strongest collaborative partnerships with Botswana, followed by the United Kingdom and South Africa. The majority of funding institutions were American (76 %) and the National Institutes of Health was the most mentioned funding organization, accounting for 33 % of all financial acknowledgments. Only 9 % of the funding acknowledgments came from Botswana.Conclusion and policy summaryAlthough cancer research in Botswana is expanding because of substantial foreign assistance, it is also hampered by a lack of local funding, minimal participation by Botswana-affiliated researchers, and research that is not aligned with disease burden. Our study highlights the need to strengthen local research capacity in Botswana.

Project description:BackgroundMicroglia have been identified for a century. In this period, their ontogeny and functions have come to light thanks to the tireless efforts of scientists. However, numerous documents are being produced, making it challenging for scholars, especially those new to the field, to understand them thoroughly. Therefore, having a reliable method for quickly grasping a field is crucial.MethodsWe searched and downloaded articles from the Web of Science Core Collection with "microglia" or "microglial" in the title from 2002 to 2021. Eventually, 12,813 articles were located and, using CiteSpace and VOSviewer, the fundamental data, knowledge domains, hot spots, and emerging trends, as well as the influential literature in the field of microglia research, were analyzed.ResultsFollowing 2011, microglia publications grew significantly. The two prominent journals are Glia and J Neuroinflamm. The United States and Germany dominated the microglia study. The primary research institutions are Harvard Univ and Univ Freiburg, and the leading authors are Prinz Marco and Kettenmann Helmut. The knowledge domains of microglia include eight directions, namely neuroinflammation, lipopolysaccharide, aging, neuropathic pain, macrophages, Alzheimer's disease, retina, and apoptosis. Microglial phenotype is the focus of research; while RNA-seq, exosome, and glycolysis are emerging topics, a microglial-specific marker is still a hard stone. We also identified 19 influential articles that contributed to the study of microglial origin (Mildner A 2007; Ginhoux F 2010), identity (Butovsky O 2014), homeostasis (Cardona AE 2006; Elmore MRP 2014); microglial function such as surveillance (Nimmerjahn A 2005), movement (Davalos D 2005; Haynes SE 2006), phagocytosis (Simard AR 2006), and synapse pruning (Wake H 2009; Paolicelli RC 2011; Schafer DP 2012; Parkhurst CN 2013); and microglial state/phenotype associated with disease (Keren-Shaul H 2017), as well as 5 review articles represented by Kettenmann H 2011.ConclusionUsing bibliometrics, we have investigated the fundamental data, knowledge structure, and dynamic evolution of microglia research over the previous 20 years. We hope this study can provide some inspiration and a reference for researchers studying microglia in neuroscience.

Project description:BackgroundUremic cardiomyopathy is commonly presented in chronic kidney disease (CKD), and it severely affects the prognosis of patients with CKD. In the past few decades, the investigation of uremic cardiomyopathy has developed rapidly. However, no report has summarized the situation of uremic cardiomyopathy research to date. This study aimed to evaluate the state of uremic cardiomyopathy research in the last 30 years and identify important topics and achievements, as well as emerging trends through bibliometric analysis.Materials and methodsPublications related to uremic cardiomyopathy were collected from Science Citation Index Expanded. HistCite, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the Bibliometrix Package were used for bibliometric analysis and visualization, including the analysis of the overall distribution of the annual publication, leading countries, and active institutions and authors, core journals, co-cited references, and keywords.ResultsA total of 2,403 studies related to uremic cardiomyopathy were obtained, and progress related to uremic cardiomyopathy was slower in past 3 years. A total of 10,077 authors from 2,697 institutions in 89 countries or regions reported investigations on uremic cardiomyopathy. The United States of America was the most productive and the most cited country. Myles Wolf, Joseph I Shapiro, and Carmine Zoccali published most articles in uremic cardiomyopathy, and journals in nephrology possessed core status in the field. Phosphate metabolism was the hotspot in uremic cardiomyopathy research in recent years, and future progress may concentrate on phosphate metabolism, endogenous natriuretic factors, and novel biomarkers.ConclusionThe United States of America and European countries played central roles in uremic cardiomyopathy research, while Chinese scholars should be more involved in this field. Global publications on uremic cardiomyopathy have entered platform stage, and the fibroblast growth factor-23-klotho axis remained a hotspot in this field. Endogenous natriuretic factors and novel biomarkers may be potential directions in future investigations.

Project description:Plesiomonas shigelloides is an emerging pathogen with damaging effects on human health such as gastroenteritis and extraintestinal infections. Here, we carried out a bibliometric survey that aimed to examine publication trends in Plesiomonas-related research by time and place, international collaborative works, identify gaps and suggest directions for future research. The search term "Plesiomonas shigelloides" was used to retrieve articles published between 1990 and 2017 from the Web of Science database. Only primary research articles were included in the analysis. A total of 155 articles were published within the survey period, with an average of 5.54±2.66 articles per year and an annual growth rate of -0.8%. Research output peaked in 2000 and 2006 (each accounting for 7.7% of the total). The United States ranked first in terms of numbers of articles (n = 29, 18.1%) and total citations (n = 451). Cameroon, Canada, Cuba, Switzerland and Turkey co-shared the 10th position each with 2 articles (1.3%). Research collaboration was low (collaboration index = 3. 32). In addition to Plesiomonas shigelloides (n = 82, 52.9%), the top Authors Keywords and research focus included lipopolysaccharide and nuclear magnetic resonance (n = 13, 8.4%). Diarrhea (n = 43, 27.7%), Aeromonas species (n = 41, 26.5%) and infections (n = 31, 20.0%) were also highly represented in Keywords-Plus. Authors' collaborations and coupling networks formed two mega-clusters which nodes were shared solely by authors from high-income countries. The common conceptual framework in retrieved articles determined by K-means clustering revealed three clusters with sizes of 7, 16, and 29, representing research responses focused on extraintestinal and gastroenteritis, P. shigelloides lipopolysaccharide structure, and co-infections, respectively. Our bibliometric analysis revealed a global diminishing research in Plesiomonas; greater research outcomes from high-income countries compared to others and low collaboration with developing countries.

Project description:A bibliometric analysis based on the Scopus database was carried out to summarize the global research related to selenium in drinking water from 1990 to 2021 and identify the quantitative characteristics of the research in this period. The results from the analysis revealed that the number of accumulated publications followed a quadratic growth, which confirmed the relevance this research topic is gaining during the last years. High research efforts have been invested to define safe selenium content in drinking water, since the insufficient or excessive intake of selenium and the corresponding effects on human health are only separated by a narrow margin. Some important research features of the four main technologies most frequently used to remove selenium from drinking water (coagulation, flocculation and precipitation followed by filtration; adsorption and ion exchange; membrane-based processes and biological treatments) were compiled in this work. Although the search of technological options to remove selenium from drinking water is less intensive than the search of solutions to reduce and eliminate the presence of other pollutants, adsorption was the alternative that has received the most attention according to the research trends during the studied period, followed by membrane technologies, while biological methods require further research efforts to promote their implementation.

Project description:BackgroundSmall-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a recalcitrant tumor with a poor prognosis. With the rise of SCLC research in the past decade, this study aims to analyze the foundation and frontiers of SCLC research through bibliometric analysis.MethodsRelevant publications from the Web of Science Core Collection were retrieved on January 3, 2022. R package bibliometrix and EXCEL2019 were used to analyze quantitative variables. Bibliometric mapping was constructed by VOS viewer and CiteSpace software to visualize citation, co-authorship, co-occurrence, and co-citation analysis of countries/regions, organizations, authors, references, and keywords.ResultsA total of 2,361 publications related to SCLC were identified with the total amount of articles steadily increasing, where China is the most productive country with 859 papers. Scholars and organizations from the United States, China, and Europe are primary sources of this research, among which the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center made the most contribution to the field with 122 papers. Lung Cancer published the highest number of SCLC-related articles with a total of 121, while the Journal of Thoracic Oncology received the most citations totaling 3,098. Rudin, Charles M., and Sage, Julien are the most creative author. Leora, Horn, 2018, New Engl J Med and Rudin, Charles M., Nat Genet, 2012 can be categorized as classic literature owing to their high citations or strong sigma value. "Heterogeneity & Subtypes" and "Immunotherapy" may be the new frontiers in the SCLC domain.ConclusionResearch on SCLC showed an upward trend based on the current global situation. Moreover, the current scope of collaboration in SCLC research is chiefly regional, which should further focus on transnational cooperation in the future. More attention should be devoted to "Heterogeneity & Subtypes" and "Immunotherapy", which will be the hotspots in future research.

Project description:Recently, mental health has received increasing attention, particularly preoperative anxiety, which constitutes a bad emotional experience for surgical patients. Many experts have studied preoperative anxiety in terms of its related risk factors, interventions, and postoperative effects; however, there has been no systematic analysis of published articles. This paper presents a bibliometric review of documents related to preoperative anxiety published between 2001 and 2021. A detailed data analysis of 1,596 publications was conducted using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. Since the 20th century, the field of preoperative anxiety has gradually developed; research began around 2000 and has made a huge leap forward since 2016. Developed countries, led by the United States, were the first to conduct research, but preoperative anxiety research in developing countries like Turkey and China has gradually increased and led to an irreplaceable contribution. Intervention has remained the main topic of preoperative anxiety research, and measures have developed from premedication to the provision of education and information. Moreover, the use of advanced equipment such as virtual reality has emerged with great popularity. Based on previous research, the application of virtual reality combined with pediatric patients will become a new research direction.

Project description:Aims We conducted bibliometric and visualization analyses to evaluate the current research status, hotspots, and trends related to the human microbiota markers in colorectal cancer screening. Methods The related studies were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database on 5 January 2023. Analyses of the co-occurrence and cooperation relationships between the cited authors, institutions, countries/regions, cited journals, cited articles, and keywords in the studies were carried out using CiteSpace 5.8.R3 software and the Online Analysis platform of Literature Metrology. Additionally, relevant knowledge graphs were drawn to perform visualization analyses; a keywords cluster analysis and a burst analysis were also conducted. Results After analyzing 700 relevant articles, this bibliometric analysis found that the annual publications showed an increasing trend from 1992 to 2022. Yu Jun from the Chinese University of Hong Kong had the highest cumulative number of publications, whereas Shanghai Jiao Tong University was the most productive institution. China and the USA have contributed the largest number of studies. The keywords frequency analysis demonstrated that “colorectal cancer,” “gut microbiota,” “Fusobacterium nucleatum,” “risk,” and “microbiota” were the most frequent keywords, and the keywords cluster analysis found that the current hotspots were as follows: (a) the precancerous lesions of colorectal cancer (CRC) that need to be screened, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and advanced adenoma, (b) the gut-derived microbiome for CRC screening, and (c) the early detection of CRC. The burst analysis further showed that the combination of microbiomics with metabolomics might be the future research trend in the field of CRC screening. Conclusion The findings of the current bibliometric analysis firstly provide an insight into the current research status, hotspots, and future trends in the field of CRC screening based on the microbiome; the research in this field is becoming more in-depth and diversified. Some human microbiota markers, especially “Fusobacterium nucleatum,” are promising biomarkers in CRC screening, and a future hotspot might be the combined analysis of microbiomics and metabolomics for CRC risk screening.

Project description:BackgroundGastric cancer (GC) is a type of malignant tumor that seriously endangers human health. As the understanding of the mechanisms underlying gastric cancer deepens, in recent years, investigations on gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs) have garnered significant interest. They are pivotal in the onset, progression, recurrence, and pharmacoresistance of GC. Comprehensive research on GCSCs is expected to provide new strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of GC. This article endeavors to comprehensively assess the current status and future trends of GCSCs research through bibliometric analysis, thereby providing a valuable reference for further in - depth studies in this field.MethodsEnglish - language academic journals related to GCSCs research in the Web of Science database were retrieved. Subsequently, VOSviewer was utilized to conduct network collinear analysis of the exported source institutions, literature authors, references, and keywords. And CiteSpace was used to perform statistical analysis of the annual publication count, keyword clustering, references, and keyword burst.ResultsA total of 3882 documents that met the criteria were incorporated. The quantity of published papers has shown a consistent upward trend annually since 2003. Among the authors of the literature, multiple stable core author groups represented by Zhu, Wei, Wang, Mei, Xu, Wenrong, etc. have been formed. There are 335 associated institutions in total. The Japan National Cancer Center has the strongest relevance and the largest number of published papers. There are 7 clustering labels formed among the keywords, including main clustering modules such as activation, cancer stem cells, DNA content aneuploidy, and expression. 25 burst keywords were generated, and the burst keywords in the past two years include mesenchymal stem cells, drug resistance, proliferation, etc. The emergence of references indicates that eight references have been cited up to now and are the focus of current research.ConclusionThe research overview of GCSCs in the past 30 years was visually presented by visual maps. In the past decade, scholars' research in this field has gradually intensified, and the development trend is good. Through the deeper study of the GCSCs mechanism, intervention GCSCs in the future will be a new promising treatment approach for GC patients. This hot topic still deserves more attention in the future.
