Main group catalysis for H₂ purification based on liquid organic hydrogen carriers.

ABSTRACT: Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is one of the most important energy carriers. In the midterm future, a huge amount of H₂ will be produced from a variety of hydrocarbon sources through conversion and removal of contaminants such as CO and CO₂. However, bypassing these purification processes is desirable, given their energy consumption and environmental impact, which ultimately increases the cost of H₂. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to separate H₂ from a gaseous mixture of H₂/CO/CO₂/CH₄ that can include an excess of CO and CO₂ relative to H₂ and simultaneously store it in N-heterocyclic compounds that act as liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), which can be applied to produce H₂ by subsequent dehydrogenation. Our results demonstrate that LOHCs can potentially be used for H₂ purification from CO- and CO₂-rich crude H₂ in addition to their well-established use in H₂ storage.

Iridium-Catalyzed Dehydrogenation in a Continuous Flow Reactor for Practical On-Board Hydrogen Generation From Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers.

Project description:To enable the large-scale use of hydrogen fuel cells for mobility applications, convenient methods for on-board hydrogen storage and release are required. A promising approach is liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), since these are safe, available on a large scale, and compatible with existing refueling infrastructure. Usually, LOHC dehydrogenation is carried out in batch-type reactors by transition metals and their complexes and suffers from slow H2 release kinetics and/or inability to reach high energy density by weight, owing to low conversion or the need to dilute the reaction mixture. In this study, a continuous flow reactor is used in combination with a heterogenized iridium pincer complex, which enables a tremendous increase in LOHC dehydrogenation rates. Thus, dehydrogenation of isopropanol is performed in a regime that, in terms of gravimetric energy density, hydrogen generation rate, and precious metal content, is potentially compatible with applications in a fuel-cell powered car.

Continuous Room-Temperature Hydrogen Release from Liquid Organic Carriers in a Photocatalytic Packed-Bed Flow Reactor.

Project description:Despite the potential of hydrogen (H2 ) storage in liquid organic carriers to achieve carbon neutrality, the energy required for H2 release and the cost of catalyst recycling have hindered its large-scale adoption. In response, a photo flow reactor packed with rhodium (Rh)/titania (TiO2 ) photocatalyst was reported for the continuous and selective acceptorless dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline to H2 gas and quinoline under visible light irradiation at room temperature. The tradeoff between the reactor pressure drop and its photocatalytic surface area was resolved by selective in-situ photodeposition of Rh in the photo flow reactor post-packing on the outer surface of the TiO2 microparticles available to photon flux, thereby reducing the optimal Rh loading by 10 times compared to a batch reactor, while facilitating catalyst reuse and regeneration. An example of using quinoline as a hydrogen acceptor to lower the energy of the hydrogen production step was demonstrated via the water-gas shift reaction.

Model Catalytic Studies of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers: Dehydrogenation and Decomposition Mechanisms of Dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole on Pt(111).

Project description:Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) are compounds that enable chemical energy storage through reversible hydrogenation. They are considered a promising technology to decouple energy production and consumption by combining high-energy densities with easy handling. A prominent LOHC is N-ethylcarbazole (NEC), which is reversibly hydrogenated to dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (H12-NEC). We studied the reaction of H12-NEC on Pt(111) under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions by applying infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy, synchrotron radiation-based high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed molecular beam methods. We show that molecular adsorption of H12-NEC on Pt(111) occurs at temperatures between 173 and 223 K, followed by initial C-H bond activation in direct proximity to the N atom. As the first stable dehydrogenation product, we identify octahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (H8-NEC). Dehydrogenation to H8-NEC occurs slowly between 223 and 273 K and much faster above 273 K. Stepwise dehydrogenation to NEC proceeds while heating to 380 K. An undesired side reaction, C-N bond scission, was observed above 390 K. H8-NEC and H8-carbazole are the dominant products desorbing from the surface. Desorption occurs at higher temperatures than H8-NEC formation. We show that desorption and dehydrogenation activity are directly linked to the number of adsorption sites being blocked by reaction intermediates.

Thermodynamic Analysis of Chemical Hydrogen Storage: Energetics of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier Systems Based on Methyl-Substituted Indoles.

Project description:Liquid organic hydrogen carriers can store hydrogen in a safe and dense form through covalent bonds. Hydrogen uptake and release are realized by catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation, respectively. Indoles have been demonstrated to be interesting candidates for this task. The enthalpy of reaction is a crucial parameter in this regard as it determines not only the heat demand for hydrogen release, but also the reaction equilibrium at given conditions. In this work, a combination of experimental measurements, quantum chemical methods and a group-additivity approach has been applied to obtain a consistent dataset on the enthalpies of formation of different methylated indole derivatives and their hydrogenated counterparts. The results show a namable influence of the number and position of methyl groups on the enthalpy of reaction. The enthalpy of reaction of the overall hydrogenation reaction varies in the range of up to 18.2 kJ·mol-1 (corresponding to 4.6 kJ·mol(H2)-1). The widest range of enthalpy of reaction data for different methyl indoles has been observed for the last step (hydrogenation for the last double bond in the five-membered ring). Here a difference of up to 7.3 kJ·mol(H2)-1 between the highest and the lowest value was found.

A novel liquid organic hydrogen carrier system based on catalytic peptide formation and hydrogenation.

Project description:Hydrogen is an efficient green fuel, but its low energy density when stored under high pressure or cryogenically, and safety issues, presents significant disadvantages; hence finding efficient and safe hydrogen carriers is a major challenge. Of special interest are liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), which can be readily loaded and unloaded with considerable amounts of hydrogen. However, disadvantages include high hydrogen pressure requirements, high reaction temperatures for both hydrogenation and dehydrogenation steps, which require different catalysts, and high LOHC cost. Here we present a readily reversible LOHC system based on catalytic peptide formation and hydrogenation, using an inexpensive, safe and abundant organic compound with high potential capacity to store and release hydrogen, applying the same catalyst for loading and unloading hydrogen under relatively mild conditions. Mechanistic insight of the catalytic reaction is provided. We believe that these findings may lead to the development of an inexpensive, safe and clean liquid hydrogen carrier system.

Teaming up main group metals with metallic iron to boost hydrogenation catalysis

Project description:Hydrogenation of unsaturated bonds is a key step in both the fine and petrochemical industries. Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are historically based on noble group 9 and 10 metals. Increasing awareness of sustainability drives the replacement of costly, and often harmful, precious metals by abundant 3d-metals or even main group metals. Although not as efficient as noble transition metals, metallic barium was recently found to be a versatile hydrogenation catalyst. Here we show that addition of finely divided Fe0, which itself is a poor hydrogenation catalyst, boosts activities of Ba0 by several orders of magnitude, enabling rapid hydrogenation of alkynes, imines, challenging multi-substituted alkenes and non-activated arenes. Metallic Fe0 also boosts the activity of soluble early main group metal hydride catalysts, or precursors thereto. This synergy originates from cooperativity between a homogeneous, highly reactive, polar main group metal hydride complex and a heterogeneous Fe0 surface that is responsible for substrate activation. Elemental iron turns alkaline-earth metal complexes into highly active catalysts for the hydrogenation of alkenes, alkynes, imines and arenes. The proposed mechanism combines homogeneous catalysis by a soluble main group metal hydride complex with heterogeneous catalysis at the iron surface.

Heterogeneous Catalysis of Polyoxometalate Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrids.

Project description:Organic-inorganic hybrid polyoxometalate (POM) compounds are a subset of materials with unique structures and physical/chemical properties. The combination of metal-organic coordination complexes with classical POMs not only provides a powerful way to gain multifarious new compounds but also affords a new method to modify and functionalize POMs. In parallel with the many reports on the synthesis and structure of new hybrid POM compounds, the application of these compounds for heterogeneous catalysis has also attracted considerable attention. The hybrid POM compounds show noteworthy catalytic performance in acid, oxidation, and even in asymmetric catalytic reactions. This review summarizes the design and synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid POM compounds and particularly highlights their recent progress in heterogeneous catalysis.

Enhanced Water Purification Performance of Ionic Liquid Impregnated Metal-Organic Framework: Dye Removal by [BMIM][PF6]/MIL-53(Al) Composite.

Project description:We incorporated a water-stable ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [BMIM][PF6], into a water-stable metal-organic framework (MOF), MIL-53(Al), to generate the [BMIM][PF6]/MIL-53(Al) composite. This composite was examined for water purification by studying its capacity for methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) removal from aqueous solutions having either single dye or a mixture of both. Data illustrated that the removal efficiency and the maximum adsorption capacity of MIL-53(Al) were increased several times upon [BMIM][PF6] incorporation. For instance, within 1 min, 10 mg of pristine MIL-53(Al) adsorbed 23.3% MB from 10 mg/L of MB solution, while [BMIM][PF6]/MIL-53(Al) composite was adsorbed 82.3% MB in an identical solution. In the case of MO, 10 mg of pristine MIL-53(Al) achieved 27.8 and 53.6% MO removal from 10 mg/L of MO solution, while [BMIM][PF6]/MIL-53(Al) composite removed 61.4 and 99.2% within 5 min and 3 h, respectively. Moreover, upon [BMIM][PF6] incorporation, the maximum MB and MO adsorption capacities of the pristine MOF were increased from 84.5 to 44 mg/g to 204.9 to 60 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption of dyes in pristine MIL-53(Al) and [BMIM][PF6]/MIL-53(Al) followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a Langmuir isotherm model. In a mixture of both dyes, the IL/MOF composite showed a doubled MB selectivity after the IL incorporation. The composite was successfully regenerated at least two times after its use in water purification to remove MB, MO, and their mixtures. Infrared (IR) spectra indicated that the MB/MO adsorption occurs on [BMIM][PF6]/MIL-53(Al) by electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. These results showed that [BMIM][PF6]/MIL-53(Al) composite is a highly promising material for efficient water purification.

Bio-Based Surfactants via Borrowing Hydrogen Catalysis.

Project description:A borrowing hydrogen approach to produce bio-based surfactants is described. The process utilizes ubiquitous amino acids and common alcohols without protecting group manipulations. Surfactants are synthesized in a single step using a commercially available ruthenium-based catalyst in a waste-free manner with nearly ideal atom economy. The versatility of the products is shown by further derivatization resulting in novel Gemini surfactants and a related quaternary ammonia salt. The analysis of selected compounds shows remarkable properties as surfactants. Further studies show their potential biodegradability in nature, which enhances the broad application profile of the sustainable products prepared in this study.
