UV-vis-IR Broad Spectral Photodetectors Based on VO₂-ZnO Nanocrystal Films.

ABSTRACT: As a narrow band semiconductor at room temperature and a metallic material above ∼68 °C, functional VO₂ films are widely investigated for smart windows, whereas their potential for ultraviolet-visible-infrared (UV-vis-IR) broad spectral photodetectors has not been efficiently studied. In this report, photodetectors based on VO₂-ZnO nanocrystal composite films were prepared by nanocrystal-mist (NC-mist) deposition. An enhanced photodetection switching ratio was achieved covering the ultraviolet to infrared wavelength. Due to the synergetic effect of nanosize, surface, phase transition, percolation threshold, and the band structure of the heterojunction, the transfer and transport of photogenerated carriers modulate the device performance. This study probes new chances of applying VO₂-semiconductor-based nanocomposites for broad spectral photodetectors.

Exploration of Chromone-Based Thiosemicarbazone Derivatives: SC-XRD/DFT, Spectral (IR, UV-Vis) Characterization, and Quantum Chemical Analysis.

Project description:By the condensation of thiosemicarbazide with coumarin aldehyde, two novel substituted thiosemicarbazones with chemical formulae C24H25N3O3S (3a) and C26H23N3O3S (3b) have been synthesized. The synthesized compounds were resolved using SC-XRD, and structure elucidation was carried out using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, UV-visible, and FT-IR spectroscopic analyses. Computational calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory were performed to countercheck the experimental (UV-vis, FT-IR) findings and explore the electronic (FMO, NBO, MEP) properties of 3a-b. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 3a-b were estimated using B3LYP, HF, LC-BLYP, CAM-B3LYP, M062X, and M06 functionals in combination with the 6-311+G(d,p) basis set. The crystallographic data revealed that compounds were crystallized as an orthorhombic crystal lattice with the Pbcn space group and the triclinic crystal lattice with the P̅1 space group. A good concurrence among experimental SC-XRD-generated bond lengths, bond angles, FT-IR, UV-vis, and corresponding DFT results was found, which confirms the purity of both compounds. The NBO analysis confirmed the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and hyperconjugative interactions, which not only were the pivotal cause of stability of the investigated compounds but also led to an overwhelming NLO response. The energy differences calculated for HOMO/LUMO are 3.053 and 3.118 eV in 3a and 3b, respectively. The crystal 3b showed a higher value of first-order polarizability at all levels of theory than 3a. Overall results show that the crystals under investigation are polarized in nature with a good dipole moment. A comparative analysis with urea molecules clearly indicates that the studied compounds are acceptable NLO candidates and they can be used for future technological applications.

Broad-spectral-response nanocarbon bulk-heterojunction excitonic photodetectors.

Project description:High-performance broad-spectrum nanocarbon bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic photodetectors are reported. These reported photodetectors consist of a semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (s-SWCNT) and a PC71 BM blended active layer. Magnetic-field effects and the chirality of the s-SWCNTs play an important role in controlling the photoresponse time and photocurrent improvement.

Transparent and Homogenous Cellulose Nanocrystal/Lignin UV-Protection Films.

Project description:In the context of valorization of lignin produced from the pulp and paper industries, biodegradable UV-protection films were prepared using lignin and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Initially, CNC films were optimized for improving their transparency by studying the effect of various sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentrations. Maximum (%) transmittance of CNC film was obtained for NaOH addition between 3 and 4 wt %. The optimized CNC suspensions were used for incorporating alkaline lignin (AL) and softwood kraft lignin (SKL) in various concentrations (1-10 wt %). Morphological characterization showed homogeneity of the lignin distribution in CNC/lignin films. Complete UV blocking was achieved at 10 wt % lignin (AL or SKL) in CNC films. Cross-polarized optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopic images of films showed some degrees of global alignment of CNC rods upon addition of NaOH, which remained unaffected by lignin addition. Lignin modification through acetylation reduced the lignin color and improved visible light transmission of films without significantly affecting the UV-absorption properties. Presence of lignin also enhanced the thermal and contact angle stability of the films. This work shows for the first time that CNC aqueous suspensions with and without containing lignin could be tuned through the addition of NaOH to produce transparent and homogenous films, providing a simple and green approach in engineering CNC/lignin UV-protection films.

UV-Assisted Photochemical Synthesis of Reduced Graphene Oxide/ZnO Nanowires Composite for Photoresponse Enhancement in UV Photodetectors.

Project description:The weak photon absorption and high recombination rate of electron-hole pairs in disordered zinc oxide nanowires (ZNWs) limit its application in UV photodetection. This limitation can be overcome by introducing graphene sheets to the ZNWs. Herein we report a high-performance photodetector based on one-dimensional (1D) wide band-gap semiconductor disordered ZNWs composited with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) for ultraviolet (UV) photoresponse enhancement. The RGO/ZNWs composites have been successfully synthetized through UV-assisted photochemical reduction of GO in ZNWs suspension. The material characterizations in morphology, Raman scattering, and Ultraviolet-visible light absorption verified the formation of graphene sheets attached in ZNWs network and the enhancement of UV absorption due to the introduction of graphene. In comparison with photodetectors based on pure ZNWs, the photodetectors based on RGO/ZNWs composite exhibit enhanced photoresponse with photocurrent density of 5.87 mA·cm-2, on/off current ratio of 3.01 × 10⁴, and responsivity of 1.83 A·W-1 when a UV irradiation of 3.26 mW·cm-2 and 1.0 V bias were used. Theory analysis is also presented to get insight into the inherent mechanisms of separation and transportation of photo-excited carriers in RGO/ZNWs composite.

Cellulose Nanocrystal Reinforced Chitosan Based UV Barrier Composite Films for Sustainable Packaging.

Project description:In this study, green composite films based on cellulose nanocrystal/chitosan (CNC/CS) were fabricated by solution casting. FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TEM characterizations were conducted to determine the structure and morphology of the prepared films. The addition of only 4 wt.% CNC in the CS film improved the tensile strength and Young's modulus by up to 39% and 78%, respectively. Depending on CNC content, the moisture absorption decreased by 34.1-24.2% and the water solubility decreased by 35.7-26.5% for the composite films compared with neat CS film. The water vapor permeation decreased from 3.83 × 10-11 to 2.41 × 10-11 gm-1 s-1Pa-1 in the CS-based films loaded with (0-8 wt.%) CNC. The water and UV barrier properties of the composite films showed better performance than those of neat CS film. Results suggested that CNC/CS nanocomposite films can be used as a sustainable packaging material in the food industry.

Theory predicts UV/vis-to-IR photonic down conversion mediated by excited state vibrational polaritons.

Project description:This work proposes a photophysical phenomenon whereby ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) excitation of a molecule involving a Franck-Condon (FC) active vibration yields infrared (IR) emission by strong coupling to an optical cavity. The resulting UV/vis-to-IR photonic down conversion process is mediated by vibrational polaritons in the electronic excited state potential. It is shown that the formation of excited state vibrational polaritons (ESVP) via UV/vis excitation only involve vibrational modes with both a non-zero FC activity and IR activity in the excited state. Density functional theory calculations are used to identify 1-Pyreneacetic acid as a molecule with this property and the dynamics of ESVP are modeled. Overall, this work introduces an avenue of polariton chemistry where excited state dynamics are influenced by the formation of vibrational polaritons. Along with this, the UV/vis-to-IR photonic down conversion is potentially useful in both sensing excited state vibrations and quantum transduction schemes.

Cellulose Nanocrystal-ZnO Nanohybrids for Controlling Photocatalytic Activity and UV Protection in Cosmetic Formulation.

Project description:A high-performance semiconductor zinc oxide (ZnO) on melamine formaldehyde-coated cellulose nanocrystals (MFCNCs) was synthesized and evaluated for its application in smart cosmetics. These ZnO@MFCNC hybrid nanostructures were evaluated for their in vitro sun protection factor performance and photocatalytic activity under simulated UV and solar radiation. The photodegradation kinetics of a model pigment (methylene blue) was fitted to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. A 4-fold increase in the photocatalytic activity of ZnO@MFCNCs was observed when compared to pure ZnO. This is associated with (i) increased specific surface area provided by the MFCNC template, (ii) confined surface energy and controlled growth of ZnO nanoparticles, and (iii) entrapment of photoinduced charge carriers in the pores of the core-shell MFCNC rod, followed by fast promotion of interfacial e-charge transfer to the surface of the catalyst. The present study demonstrates how an increase in photocatalytic activity can be engineered without the introduction of structural defects or band gap tailoring of the semiconductor. The aqueous-based ZnO@MFCNC hybrid system displayed attractive UV-absorption and photocatalytic characteristics, offering the conversion of this renewable and sustainable technology into intelligent cosmetic formulations.

Highly sensitive ultraviolet photodetectors fabricated from ZnO quantum dots/carbon nanodots hybrid films.

Project description:Ultraviolet photodetectors have been fabricated from ZnO quantum dots/carbon nanodots hybrid films, and the introduction of carbon nanodots improves the performance of the photodetectors greatly. The photodetectors can be used to detect very weak ultraviolet signals (as low as 12 nW/cm(2)). The detectivity and noise equivalent power of the photodetector can reach 3.1 × 10(17) cmHz(1/2)/W and 7.8 × 10(-20) W, respectively, both of which are the best values ever reported for ZnO-based photodetectors. The mechanism for the high sensitivity of the photodetectors has been attributed to the enhanced carrier-separation at the ZnO/C interface.

NIR-ViS-UV broadband absorption in ultrathin electrochemically-grown, graded index nanoporous platinum films.

Project description:Nanoporous platinum broadband absorber has attracted interest in thermosensorics and IR photodetection due to its unique properties. In this work we report the physical mechanism underlying broadband absorption in electrochemically-grown, nanoporous Pt films by analyzing NIR-ViS-UV spectral ellipsometry data of nanoporous Pt films in dependence on the Pt film thickness (27, 35, 38, 48 nm). For the two thinner films a single layer model with a graded optical index Pt surface layer was used. For the two thicker films a two-layer optical model with a constant optical index Pt substrate layer and a graded optical index Pt surface layer was used. The graded optical index of the Pt surface layer reduces surface reflectivity and the constant optical index Pt substrate layer supports multiple reflections in the Pt film. Finally, we relate the thickness dependent optical index with the nanostructure of the nanoporous Pt film, which can be controlled in the electrochemical growth process. We observed that while in the transverse plane the multilayer exhibits graded refractive index, in the top horizontal planes the multilayer assembly exhibits discontinuous refractive index values due to the distribution of platinum crystal islands in air, which allows a metamaterial behavior of the whole system.

Bioinspired, vertically stacked, and perovskite nanocrystal-enhanced CMOS imaging sensors for resolving UV spectral signatures.

Project description:Imaging and identifying target signatures and biomedical markers in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum is broadly important to medical imaging, military target tracking, remote sensing, and industrial automation. However, current silicon-based imaging sensors are fundamentally limited because of the rapid absorption and attenuation of UV light, hindering their ability to resolve UV spectral signatures. Here, we present a bioinspired imaging sensor capable of wavelength-resolved imaging in the UV range. Inspired by the UV-sensitive visual system of the Papilio xuthus butterfly, the sensor monolithically combines vertically stacked photodiodes and perovskite nanocrystals. This imaging design combines two complementary UV detection mechanisms: The nanocrystal layer converts a portion of UV signals into visible fluorescence, detected by the photodiode array, while the remaining UV light is detected by the top photodiode. Our label-free UV fluorescence imaging data from aromatic amino acids and cancer/normal cells enables real-time differentiation of these biomedical materials with 99% confidence.
