Project description:Development of advanced materials for electrocatalytic and photocatalytic water splitting is the key in utilization of renewable energy. In the present work, we have synthesized MoS2 nanoparticles embedded over the graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) layer for superior catalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution process (HER). The nanocomposite materials are characterized using different spectroscopic and microscopic measurements. A Tafel slope of ∼40 mV/decade suggested the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism for the HER process with MoS2/GO composite as the catalyst, which indicated that electrochemical desorption of hydrogen is the rate-limiting step. The small Tafel slope indicates a promising electrocatalyst for HER in practical application. MoS2/GO composite material has shown superior catalytic behavior compared to that of MoS2/rGO composite material. The HER catalytic activity of the catalysts is explored using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) using the feedback and redox competition mode in SECM. The activation energy for HER activity was calculated, and the values are in the range of 17-6 kJ/mol. The lower value of activation energy suggested faster HER kinetics.

Project description:The hierarchical nanostructured CdS@MoS2 core shell was architectured using template free facile solvothermal technique. More significantly, the typical hexagonal phase of core CdS and shell MoS2 has been obtained. Optical study clearly shows the two steps absorption in the visible region having band gap of 2.4 eV for CdS and 1.77 eV for MoS2. The FESEM of CdS@MoS2 reveals the formation of CdS microsphere (as a core) assemled with 40-50 nm nanoparticles and covered with ultrathin nanosheets of MoS2 (Shell) having size 200-300 nm and the 10-20 nm in thickness. The overall size of the core shell structure is around 8 µm. Intially, there is a formation of CdS microsphre due to high affinity of Cd ions with sulfur and further growth of MoS2 thin sheets on the surface. Considering band gap ideally in visible region, photocatalytic hydrogen evolution using CdS@MoS2 core shell was investigated under natural sunlight. The utmost hydrogen evolution rate achieved for core shell is 416.4 µmole h-1 with apparent quantum yield 35.04%. The photocatalytic activity suggest that an intimate interface contact, extended visible light absorption and effective photo generated charge carrier separation contributed to the photocatalytic enhancement of the CdS@MoS2 core shell. Additional, the enhanced hole trapping process and effective electrons transfer from CdS to MoS2 in CdS@MoS2 core shell heterostructures can significantly contribute for photocatalytic activity. Such core shell heterostructure will also have potential in thin film solar cell and other microelectronic devices.

Project description:Various enzymes utilize hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant. Such "peroxizymes" are potentially very attractive catalysts for a broad range of oxidation reactions. Most peroxizymes, however, are inactivated by an excess of H2 O2 . The electrochemical reduction of oxygen can be used as an in situ generation method for hydrogen peroxide to drive the peroxizymes at high operational stabilities. Using conventional electrode materials, however, also necessitates significant overpotentials, thereby reducing the energy efficiency of these systems. This study concerns a method to coat a gas-diffusion electrode with oxidized carbon nanotubes (oCNTs), thereby greatly reducing the overpotential needed to perform an electroenzymatic halogenation reaction. In comparison to the unmodified electrode, with the oCNTs-modified electrode the overpotential can be reduced by approximately 100 mV at comparable product formation rates.

Project description:Recently, sulfur (S)-vacancies created on the basal plane of 2H-molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) using argon plasma exposure exhibited higher intrinsic activity for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction than the edge sites and metallic 1T-phase of MoS2 catalysts. However, a more industrially viable alternative to the argon plasma desulfurization process is needed. In this work, we introduce a scalable route towards generating S-vacancies on the MoS2 basal plane using electrochemical desulfurization. Even though sulfur atoms on the basal plane are known to be stable and inert, we find that they can be electrochemically reduced under accessible applied potentials. This can be done on various 2H-MoS2 nanostructures. By changing the applied desulfurization potential, the extent of desulfurization and the resulting activity can be varied. The resulting active sites are stable under extended desulfurization durations and show consistent HER activity.

Project description:Electrochemical devices for efficient production of hydrogen as energy carrier rely still largely on rare platinum group metal catalysts. Chemically and structurally modified metal dichalcogenide MoS2 is a promising substitute for these critical raw materials at the cathode side where the hydrogen evolution reaction takes place. For precise understanding of structure and hydrogen adsorption characteristics in chemically modified MoS2 nanostructures, we perform comprehensive density functional theory calculations on transition metal (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) doping at the experimentally relevant MoS2 surfaces at substitutional Mo-sites. Clear benefits of doping the basal plane are found, whereas at the Mo- and S-edges complex modifications at the whole edge are observed. New insight into doping-enhanced activity is obtained and guidance is given for further experiments. We study a machine learning model to facilitate the screening of suitable structures and find a promising level of prediction accuracy with minimal structural input.

Project description:The high catalytic activity of cobalt-doped MoS2 (Co-MoS2) observed in several chemical reactions such as hydrogen evolution and hydrodesulfurization, among others, is mainly attributed to the formation of the CoMoS phase, in which Co occupies the edge-sites of MoS2. Unfortunately, its production represents a challenge due to limited cobalt incorporation and considerable segregation into sulfides and sulfates. We, therefore, developed a fast and efficient solid-state microwave irradiation synthesis process suitable for producing thin Co-MoS2 flakes (∼3-8 layers) attached on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide. The CoMoS phase is predominant in samples with up to 15 at% of cobalt, and only a slight segregation into cobalt sulfides/sulfates is noticed at larger Co content. The Co-MoS2 flakes exhibit a large number of defects resulting in wavy sheets with significant variations in interlayer distance. The catalytic performance was investigated by evaluating the activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and a gradual improvement with increased amount of Co was observed, reaching a maximum at 15 at% with an overpotential of 197 mV at -10 mA cm-2, and a Tafel slope of 61 mV dec-1. The Co doping had little effect on the HER mechanism, but a reduced onset potential and charge transfer resistance contributed to the improved activity. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using a rapid microwave irradiation process to produce highly doped Co-MoS2 with predominant CoMoS phase, excellent HER activity, and operational stability.

Project description:Efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation/evolution reaction (HOR/HER) are essential for commercializing alkaline fuel cells and electrolyzers. The sluggish HER/HOR reaction kinetics in base is the key issue that requires resolution so that commercialization may proceed. It is also quite challenging to decrease the noble metal loading without sacrificing performance. Herein, we report improved HER/HOR activity as a result of hydrogen spillover on platinum-supported MoO3 (Pt/MoO3-CNx-400) with a Pt loading of 20%. The catalyst exhibited a decreased over-potential of 66.8 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 current density with a Tafel slope of 41.2 mV dec-1 for the HER in base. The Pt/MoO3-CNx-400 also exhibited satisfactory HOR activity in base. The mass-specific exchange current density of Pt/MoO3-CNx-400 and commercial Pt/C are 505.7 and 245 mA mgPt-1, respectively. The experimental results suggest that the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) is the key descriptor for the HER/HOR. We also demonstrated that the enhanced HER/HOR performance was due to the hydrogen spillover from Pt to MoO3 sites that enhanced the Volmer/Heyrovsky process, which led to high HER/HOR activity and was supported by the experimental and theoretical investigations. The work function value of Pt [Φ = 5.39 eV) is less than that of β-MoO3 (011) [Φ = 7.09 eV], which revealed the charge transfer from Pt to the β-MoO3 (011) surface. This suggested the feasibility of hydrogen spillover, and was further confirmed by the relative hydrogen adsorption energy [ΔGH] at different sites. Based on these findings, we propose that the H2O or H2 dissociation takes place on Pt and interfaces to form Pt-Had or (Pt/MoO3)-Had, and some of the Had shifted to MoO3 sites through hydrogen spillover. Then, Had at the Pt and interface, and MoO3 sites reacted with H2O and HO- to form H2 or H2O molecules, thereby boosting the HER/HOR activity. This work may provide valuable information for the development of hydrogen-spillover-based electrocatalysts for use in various renewable energy devices.

Project description:Hydrogen generation from water using noble metal-free photocatalysts presents a promising platform for renewable and sustainable energy. Copper-based chalcogenides of earth-abundant elements, especially Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS), have recently arisen as a low-cost and environment-friendly material for photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Herein, we report a new heterostructure consisting of CZTS nanoparticles anchored onto a MoS2-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid. Using a facile two-step method, CZTS nanoparticles were in situ grown on the surface of MoS2-rGO hybrid, which generated high density of nanoscale interfacial contact between CZTS and MoS2-rGO hybrid. The photoexcited electrons of CZTS can be readily transported to MoS2 through rGO backbone, reducing the electron-hole pair recombination. In photocatalytic hydrogen generation under visible light irradiation, the presence of MoS2-rGO hybrids enhanced the hydrogen production rate of CZTS by 320%, which can be attributed to the synergetic effect of increased charge separation by rGO and more catalytically active sites from MoS2. Furthermore, this CZTS/MoS2-rGO heterostructure showed much higher photocatalytic activity than both Au and Pt nanoparticle-decorated CZTS (Au/CZTS and Pt/CZTS) photocatalysts, indicating the MoS2-rGO hybrid is a better co-catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen generation than the precious metal. The CZTS/MoS2-rGO system also demonstrated stable photocatalytic activity for a continuous 20 h reaction.

Project description:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but only edges and S-vacancies are catalytic active sites for the HER. Therefore, it is crucial to increase edge sites and S-vacancies for enhancing the HER activity of MoS2. Here, we report an enhanced HER activity of MoS2 by combing vertical nanosheets and H2 annealing. Compared to horizontal MoS2 nanosheets, pristine vertical MoS2 nanosheets showed better HER activity due to a larger amount of edges. H2 annealing further enhanced the HER activity of vertical MoS2 nanosheets remarkably. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to elucidate the enhanced HER activity by H2 annealing. SEM images showed that H2 annealing roughened the MoS2 edges, leading to more edge sites. XPS data revealed the smaller S : Mo ratio after H2 annealing, meaning more S-vacancies. Meanwhile, EIS measurements showed that charge transfer was accelerated by H2 annealing. These findings elaborated the H2 annealing induced enhancement of the HER activity, which were further confirmed by the subsequent re-sulfurization experiment.

Project description:The modification of electrode surfaces is widely implemented in order to try and improve electron transfer kinetics and surface interactions, most recently using graphene related materials. Currently, the use of 'as is' graphene oxide (GO) has been largely overlooked, with the vast majority of researchers choosing to reduce GO to graphene or use it as part of a composite electrode. In this paper, 'as is' GO is explored and electrochemically characterized using a range of electrochemical redox probes, namely potassium ferrocyanide(II), N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD), dopamine hydrochloride and epinephrine. Furthermore, the electroanalytical efficacy of GO is explored towards the sensing of dopamine hydrochloride and epinephrine via cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical response of GO is benchmarked against pristine graphene and edge plane-/basal plane pyrolytic graphite (EPPG and BPPG respectively) alternatives, where the GO shows an enhanced electrochemical/electroanalytical response. When using GO as an electrode material, the electrochemical response of the analytes studied herein deviate from that expected and exhibit altered electrochemical responses. The oxygenated species encompassing GO strongly influence and dominate the observed voltammetry, which is crucially coverage dependent. GO electrocatalysis is observed, which is attributed to the presence of beneficial oxygenated species dictating the response in specific cases, demonstrating potential for advantageous electroanalysis to be realized. Note however, that crucial coverage based regions are observed at GO modified electrodes, owing to the synergy of edge plane sites and oxygenated species. We report the true beneficial electrochemistry of GO, which has enormous potential to be beneficially used in various electrochemical applications 'as is' rather than be simply used as a precursor to making graphene and is truly a fascinating member of the graphene family.
