Level and predictors of breast cancer awareness among Saudi women: A nationwide study.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Breast cancer occurs when abnormal breast cells grow rapidly and uncontrollably. Early detection and intervention have been established to significantly decrease mortality rates.

Objective

There is a lack of focused research investigating the degree of breast cancer awareness among Saudi women. Thus, this study aimed to fill this gap by conducting a nationwide survey on a large pool of women.

Design

A cross-sectional web-based nationwide study.

Methods

This study targeted Saudi women from all regions of the country and was conducted from 20 August to 3 September 2021. The study used the Breast Cancer Awareness Measure questionnaire to measure breast cancer awareness. This study was approved by the King Abdullah International Medical Research Center institutional review board.

Results

Overall, poor breast cancer awareness scores were demonstrated by 71% of the participants. Unemployed women were more likely to have poor breast cancer awareness.

Conclusion

Our study reports an alarmingly high level of poor overall breast cancer awareness in Saudi women. Interventions should be implemented to combat this lack of awareness.

Project description:BackgroundThere is increasing concern about cardiovascular disease (CVD) after breast cancer (BC). The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of different types of CVD in women diagnosed with BC compared to cancer-free controls as well as the incidence of CVD after BC diagnosis.MethodsWe performed a cohort study based on data from national registries covering the entire Danish population. We followed 16,505 cancer-naïve BC patients diagnosed from 2003 to 2007 5 years before and up to 10 years after BC diagnosis compared to 165,042 cancer-free controls.ResultsWe found that 15.6% of BC patients were registered with at least one CVD diagnosis in hospital records before BC diagnosis. Overall, BC patients and controls were similar with regard to CVD comorbidity before BC diagnosis. After BC diagnosis, the incidence of all CVD diagnoses combined was significantly higher in BC patients than controls up to approximately 6 years after the index date (BC diagnosis). After 10 years, 28% of both BC patients and controls (without any CVD diagnosis up to 5 years before the index date) had at least one CVD diagnosis according to hospital records. However, the incidence of heart failure, thrombophlebitis/thrombosis and pulmonary heart disease including pulmonary embolism remained higher in BC patients than controls during the entire 10-year follow-up period. After 10 years, 2.7% of BC patients compared to 2.5% of controls were diagnosed with heart failure, 2.7% of BC patients compared to 1.5% of controls were diagnosed with thrombophlebitis/thrombosis, and 1.5% of BC patients compared to 1.0% of controls were diagnosed with pulmonary heart disease according to hospital records. Furthermore, we found that the risk of heart failure and thrombophlebitis/thrombosis was higher after chemotherapy.ConclusionsFocus on CVD in BC patients is important to ensure optimum treatment with regard to BC as well as possible CVD. Strategies to minimise and manage the increased risk of heart failure, thrombophlebitis/thrombosis and pulmonary heart disease including pulmonary embolism in BC patients are especially important.

Project description:ObjectivesTo perform the cross-cultural adaption of the Breast Cancer Awareness Measurement (BCAM) and to test its psychometric properties among Chinese women.DesignThis is a cross-sectional study.SettingsThis study was conducted in communities, schools and institutions in Changchun, Jilin Province, China.ParticipantsA total of 328 women voluntarily participated in and completed the Chinese version of the BCAM (C-BCAM), resulting in an effective response rate of 91.1%.Primary and secondary outcome measuresPsychometric properties, including item analysis (the extreme group comparison and item-total correlations), content validity (item-level content validity index (I-CVI) and scale-level content validity index (S-CVI)), construct validity (exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA)) and internal consistency (Cronbach's α and test-retest reliability), were measured.ResultsThe C-BCAM has excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α=0.90), with alpha coefficients of 0.88, 0.84 and 0.94 for its three domains. The test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.72. The I-CVI ranged from 0.86 to 1.00, and the S-CVI was 0.92. CFA showed that the three-factor model explained 51.56% of the total variance, with a good model fit (likelihood ratio χ2/df=1.86, incremental fit index=0.94, comparative fit index=0.94, goodness-of-fit index=0.84, adjusted goodness-of-fit index=0.80, standardised root mean square error of approximation=0.06 and root mean square residual=0.05).ConclusionsThe C-BCAM has satisfactory validity and reliability and is a culturally appropriate and reliable tool for evaluating breast cancer awareness among Chinese women. This reliable instrument can help researchers and health professionals evaluate women's knowledge about the symptoms and risk factors of breast cancer and identify their barriers to seeking medical help. It also helps healthcare providers identify women with poor breast cancer awareness and encourage them to perform screening practice.

Project description:BackgroundGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication characterized by insulin resistance. A link has been suggested between insulin resistance and breast cancer, which is the most common cancer in women. Hence, women with previous GDM may be at increased risk of developing breast cancer, yet, the existing evidence is conflicting. This study explored the association between GDM and incident breast cancer, including age at cancer diagnosis. Additionally, we investigated the potential impact of severity of insulin resistance during pregnancy and of subsequent diabetes development on the breast cancer risk.MethodsWe conducted a nationwide, register-based cohort study including all women giving birth in Denmark from 1997 to 2018. We defined GDM and breast cancer based on ICD-10 codes. Premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer was pragmatically defined as age at outcome < 50 years and ≥ 50 years, respectively. A proxy for severity of insulin resistance during pregnancy was based on insulin treatment; subsequent diabetes was defined as presence of ICD-10 codes and/or antidiabetic medication after pregnancy. The statistical analyses included Cox regression, logistic regression and t-test.ResultsOf 708,121 women, 3.4% had GDM. The median follow-up period was 11.9 years (range 0-21.9). The overall breast cancer risk was comparable in women with and without previous GDM (adjusted hazard ratio 0.96 [95% CI 0.83-1.12]). Premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer risk also did not differ; however, women with previous GDM had a breast cancer diagnosis at younger age (42.6 vs. 43.5 years, p-value 0.01). All-cause mortality was similar regardless of GDM history. Severity of insulin resistance during pregnancy and subsequent diabetes did not affect breast cancer risk.ConclusionsThis large, population-based cohort study showed no higher risk of incident breast cancer in women with previous GDM compared to women without previous GDM after a median of almost 12 years of follow-up. This was evident irrespective of menopausal state. The breast cancer risk was not influenced by the severity of insulin resistance during pregnancy and by subsequent diabetes development. Regardless of GDM history, attention towards prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer should be prioritized.

Project description:BackgroundVitamin D plays a crucial role in bone health, calcium absorption, and immune function, yet significant misconceptions and knowledge gaps persist. This study aimed to assess knowledge regarding vitamin D among Greek women and identify factors associated with vitamin D knowledge.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 761 Greek women (mean age: 41.2 ± 7.7 years) using an online self-administered questionnaire designed in Google Forms. Participants were recruited via social media platforms to ensure a geographically diverse sample.ResultsOverall, 57.4% of participants demonstrated knowledge of vitamin D's functions, primarily linking it to bone health (34.4%) and immune function (26.8%). The multiple regression model identified significant predictors of knowledge of vitamin D's functions, including age (OR = 1.041, 95% CI: 1.019-1.062, p < 0.001), weight (OR = 0.964, 95% CI: 0.938-0.992, p = 0.010), and frequent vitamin D testing (>2 times: OR = 2.280, 95% CI: 1.392-3.736, p = 0.001; once-twice: OR = 1.776, 95% CI: 1.111-2.829, p = 0.016). Furthermore, age (OR = 1.054, 95% CI: 1.027-1.081, p < 0.001), weight (OR = 0.987, 95% CI: 0.975-0.999, p = 0.028), higher city population (>50,000 citizens: OR = 1.598, 95% CI: 1.021-2.502, p = 0.040), frequent vitamin D testing (>2 times: OR = 2.616, 95% CI: 1.529-4.447, p < 0.003; one-two times: OR = 1.773, 95% CI: 1.052-2.989, p = 0.032), and children's supplementation (OR = 1.414, 95% CI: 1.007-1.987, p = 0.046) were significant predictors of knowledge regarding diseases preventable by vitamin D.ConclusionsGreek women demonstrated moderate awareness of vitamin D's functions, but significant knowledge gaps persist, particularly regarding its role in calcium absorption and dietary sources. Age, frequent vitamin D testing, and urban residence were significant predictors of knowledge. Targeted public health campaigns are essential to address misconceptions and improve vitamin D awareness and practices.
