Project description:Herein, a low cost, durable, and stable conductive superhydrophobic composite coating (CSC coating) was fabricated on a Q345 steel surface by simple double-layer spray coating. The water contact angle (WCA) of the CSC coating was 160° and the sliding angle (SA) was 3°. In addition to its excellent conductivity (3.10 × 103 Ω), the fabricated composite coating had good durability and wear resistance. After 10 sand-washing cycles, the CSC coating surface still exhibited stable superhydrophobicity (149° WCA, 9.5° SA). At 200 g pressure, the surface of the optimized CSC coating still maintained fine superhydrophobicity (150° WCA, 9.2° SA) and conductivity (1.86 × 104 Ω) after 10 abrasion cycles. In addition, it also exhibited fine adhesion (0.307 MPa) between the composite coating and the substrate. This functional superhydrophobic surface can be applied in specialty fields with harsh conditions such as coal mining and petrochemical activities. This new coating may also expand the application fields of superhydrophobic surfaces and have broad practical application prospects.

Project description:Novel-morphological Fe3O4 nanosheets with magnetochromatic property have been prepared by a modified solvothermal method. Such nanosheets could form one-dimension photonic crystal under an external magnetic field. The Fe3O4 nanosheets suspension could strongly diffract visible light and display varied colors with changing the intensity of the magnetic field. The photonic response is rapid, fully reversible and widely tunable in the entire visible spectrum. Excellent magnetic properties of these Fe3O4 nanosheets are exhibited with a high saturation magnetization (82.1 emu/g), low remanence (13.85 emu/g) and low coercive force (75.95 Oe). The amount of the solvent diethylene glycol (DEG) plays a key role in the formation of the sheet-shaped morphology. When the ratio of the DEG reaches 100%, the growing of the crystal plane (111) of Fe3O4 is inhibited and the sheet-like Fe3O4 crystals are formed.

Project description:Axons normally degenerate during development of the mammalian nervous system, but dysregulation of the same genetically-encoded destructive cellular machinery can destroy crucial structures during adult neurodegenerative diseases. Nerve growth factor (NGF) withdrawal from dorsal root ganglia (DRG) axons is a well-established in vitro experimental model for biochemical and cell biological studies of developmental degeneration. Definitive methods for measuring axon degeneration have been lacking and here we report a novel method of axon degeneration quantification from bulk cultures of DRG that enables objective and automated measurement of axonal density over the entire field of radial axon outgrowth from the ganglion. As proof of principal, this new method, written as an R script called Axoquant 2.0, was used to examine the role of extracellular Ca2+ in the execution of cytoskeletal disassembly during degeneration of NGF-deprived DRG axons. This method can be easily applied to examine degenerative or neuroprotective effects of gene manipulations and pharmacological interventions.

Project description:A new structural fluorine-containing methacrylate monomer CH₂=C(CH₃)COOC⁻(CF₃)₂CF₂CF₂CF₃ (5) was synthesized derived from perfluoro-2-methyl-2-pentene (D₂). A homopolymer of 5 and copolymers of 5 and methacrylate with different alkyl chain length (chain length n = 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 18) were obtained. These new fluorinated acrylate polymers showed excellent water and oil repellency. The contact angle of the films of the homopolymer and part of the copolymers were similar with the corresponding polymers prepared from CH₂=CHC(O)OCH(C₃F₇)(CF(CF₃)₂), but greater than that of the C₆F13(CF₃)CHOC(O)CH=CH₂ homopolymer. The structure-property relationship research indicated that the copolymers' hydrophobicity decreased first and then increased with the increase of alkyl chain length. Td of all the polymers were greater than 220 °C and Tg fluctuated within the range of -51~103.8 °C. Contact angle and Tg could be adjusted by controlling the feed ratio of monomer to meet the requirements of technical indicators in the practical applications. The outstanding liquid repellency and thermal stability make monomer 5 a promising alternative to perfluorinated long-chain fluorosurfactants.

Project description:As awareness of environmental protection increases, environmentally friendly coatings have been receiving great interest. Zwitterionic polymers are considered promising candidates due to their biocompatibility and excellent antifouling properties. In this paper, a type of polypeptoid containing zwitterions on the side chain was synthesized via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and post-modification. This obtained polypeptoid was subsequently grafted onto the surface of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via plasma and UV-induced surface polymerization. Surface morphology and protein adsorption tests of the resulting coating were systematically carried out. The results show that the modified coating has excellent antifouling properties and thus has great potential for environmentally friendly coating applications.

Project description:One of the most common causes of implant failure is aseptic prosthesis loosening. Another frequent complication after prosthesis implant is the microbial colonization of the prosthesis surface, which often leads to a replacement of the prosthesis. One approach to reduce these complications is the application of bioactive substances to implant surfaces. Both an antibiotic prophylaxis and a faster osteointegration can be obtained by incorporation of bactericidal active metals in degradable calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings. In this study, thin degradable calcium phosphate ceramic coatings doped with silver (Ag), copper (Cu), and bismuth (Bi) on a titanium substrate were prepared with the aid of the high-velocity suspension flame spraying (HVSFS) coating process. To characterize the samples surface roughness, brightfield microscopy of the coatings, X-ray diffraction (XRD)-analysis for definition of the phase composition of the layers, Raman spectroscopy for determination of the phase composition of the contained metals, element-mapping for Cu-content verification, release kinetics for detection of metal ions and ceramic components of the coatings were carried out. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro biocompatibility and antimicrobial activity of the coatings. For biocompatibility testing, growth experiments were performed using the cell culture line MG-63. Cell viability was investigated by Giemsa staining and live/dead assay. The WST-1 kit was used to quantify cell proliferation and vitality in vitro and the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) kit to quantify cytotoxicity. The formation of hydroxyapatite crystals in simulated body fluid was investigated to predict bioactivity in vivo. The Safe Airborne Antibacterial Assay with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was used for antimicrobial testing. The results showed good biocompatibility of all the metal doped CaP coatings, furthermore Cu and Ag doped layers showed significant antibacterial effects against S. aureus.

Project description:The self-assembly of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and benzene-1,4-diboronic acid (DBA) is employed as a sol-gel method for one-step fabrication of hydrogel coatings with versatile functionalities. A mixture of PVA and DBA in aqueous ethanol is prepared as a coating agent. The long pot life of the mixture allows for the coating of a wide range of materials with hydrogel films by simple cast- and dip-coating techniques. The resultant films show negligible dissolution in water and the intrinsic hydrophilicity of PVA provides the films with functional properties, such as improved antifogging property and resistance to protein and cell fouling. The self-assembling process shows adaptive inclusion properties toward nanoscale materials, such as metal-organic coordination polymers and inorganic nanoparticles, affording composite films. Furthermore, the coating film exhibits a unique secondary functionalization reactivity toward boronic acid-appended fluorescent dyes, through which a variety of materials are converted into fluorescent materials.

Project description:TiO₂ sol was produced by the sol-gel method through the hydrolysis and the aging of tetrabutyl titanate and the TiO₂ film was obtained by dipping and uniform lifting of the acid-treated and ultrasound-treated clean glass slides into the TiO₂ sol followed by aging, drying, and calcination. The effect of the hydrolysis control agents to the formed sol was researched and the crystalline state, the morphology, and the photocatalytic properties of the products after calcination were characterized. The structural morphology, the contact angles before and after illumination, and the self-cleaning properties of the TiO₂ film were characterized as well. The results showed that by using acetylacetone as the hydrolysis control agent, the formed TiO₂ sol had relatively high stability. The product after the calcination of the TiO₂ sol was of single anatase type with crystalline size of 18-20 nm and it could degrade nearly 100% of methylene blue after 90 min illumination. The formed TiO₂ film is compact, continuous, smooth, and had the properties of super-hydrophilicity (after 30 min illumination due to its contact angle decreasing from 21° to nearly 0°) and anti-fogging capability, which indicated its excellent self-cleaning property.

Project description:A key attribute for nanoparticles (NPs) that are used in medicine is the ability to avoid rapid uptake by phagocytic cells in the liver and other tissues. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) coatings has been the gold standard in this regard for several decades. Here, we examined hyperbranched polyglycerols (HPG) as an alternate coating on NPs. In earlier work, HPG was modified with amines and subsequently conjugated to poly(lactic acid) (PLA), but that approach compromised the ability of HPG to resist non-specific adsorption of biomolecules. Instead, we synthesized a copolymer of PLA-HPG by a one-step esterification. NPs were produced from a single emulsion using PLA-HPG: fluorescent dye or the anti-tumor agent camptothecin (CPT) were encapsulated at high efficiency in the NPs. PLA-HPG NPs were quantitatively compared to PLA-PEG NPs, produced using approaches that have been extensively optimized for drug delivery in humans. Despite being similar in size, drug release profile and in vitro cytotoxicity, the PLA-HPG NPs showed significantly longer blood circulation and significantly less liver accumulation than PLA-PEG. CPT-loaded PLA-HPG NPs showed higher stability in suspension and better therapeutic effectiveness against tumors in vivo than CPT-loaded PLA-PEG NPs. Our results suggest that HPG is superior to PEG as a surface coating for NPs in drug delivery.

Project description:All-solid-state batteries with Li metal anode can address the safety issues surrounding traditional Li-ion batteries as well as the demand for higher energy densities. However, the development of solid electrolytes and protective anode coatings possessing high ionic conductivity and good stability with Li metal has proven to be a challenge. Here, we present our informatics approach to explore the Li compound space for promising electrolytes and anode coatings using high-throughput multi-property screening and interpretable machine learning. To do this, we generate a database of battery-related materials properties by computing [Formula: see text] migration barriers and stability windows for over 15,000 Li-containing compounds from Materials Project. We screen through the database for candidates with good thermodynamic and electrochemical stabilities, and low [Formula: see text] migration barriers, identifying promising new candidates such as [Formula: see text]N, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text], among others. We train machine learning models, using ensemble methods, to predict migration barriers and oxidation and reduction potentials of these compounds by engineering input features that ensure accuracy and interpretability. Using only a small number of features, our gradient boosting regression models achieve [Formula: see text] values of 0.95 and 0.92 on the oxidation and reduction potential prediction tasks, respectively, and 0.86 on the migration barrier prediction task. Finally, we use Shapley additive explanations and permutation feature importance analyses to interpret our machine learning predictions and identify materials properties with the largest impact on predictions in our models. We show that our approach has the potential to enable rapid discovery and design of novel solid electrolytes and anode coatings.
