Longitudinal changes in infants' rhythmic arm movements during rattle-shaking play with mothers.

ABSTRACT: From early on, infants produce a variety of rhythmic behaviors-an ability that likely supports later social communication. However, it is unclear, how this rhythmic motor production changes with age. Here, we investigated the coupling between infants' arm movements across the first year of life in a social context of a rattle-shaking play with their mothers. Through longitudinal measurements at 4, 6, 9, and 12 months of age using wearable motion trackers placed on infants' arms, we show that infants (N = 40) are similarly motivated to attempt rattle-shaking across the first year of life. However, with age, they make more rattling movements with an increased frequency. Their left and right arm movements become more coupled during rattle-shaking, as shown by an increase in wavelet coherence. Infants produced more rattling movements when they were rattling alone than when their mothers were rattling or singing simultaneously. There were no differences between infants' individual and social rattling in between-arms coherence. Our results may help to understand rhythmic arm movements as precursors of motor social coordination.

Project description:A low-cost quantitative structured office measurement of movements in the extremities of people with Parkinson's disease [1,2] was performed on participants with Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy as well as age- and sex-matched healthy participants with typical development. Participants underwent twelve videotaped procedures rated by a trained examiner while connected to four accelerometers [1,2] generating a trace of the three location dimensions expressed as spreadsheets [3,4]. The signals of the five repetitive motion items (3.4 Finger tapping, 3.5 Hand movements, 3.6 Pronation-supination movements of hands, 3.7 Toe tapping, and 3.8 Leg agility) [1] underwent processing to fast Fourier [5] and amor and bump continuous wavelet transforms [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13]. Images of the signals and their transforms [4], [5], [6] of the five repetitive tasks of each participant were randomly expressed as panels on an electronic framework for rating by 35 trained examiners who did not know the source of the original output [14]. The team of international raters completed ratings of the signals and their transforms independently using criteria like the scoring systems for live assessments of movements in human participants [1,2]. The raters scored signals and transforms for deficits in the sustained performance of rhythmic movements (interruptions, slowing, and amplitude decrements) often observed in people with Parkinson's disease [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20]. Raters were first presented the images of the signals and transforms of a man with multiple system atrophy as a test and a retest in a different random order. After the raters completed the assessments of the man with multiple system atrophy, they were presented random test and retest panels of the images of signals and transforms of ten participants with Parkinson's disease who completed a single rating session. After the raters completed the assessments of the participants with Parkinson's disease who completed one set of ratings, they were presented random test and retest panels of the images of signals and transforms of (A) ten participants with Parkinson's disease and (B) eight age- and sex-match healthy participants with typical development who completed two rating session separated by a month or more [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20]. The data provide a framework for further analysis of the acquired information. Additionally, the data provide a template for the construction of electronic frameworks for the remote analysis by trained raters of signals and transforms of rhythmic processes to verify that the systems are operating smoothly without interruptions or changes in frequency and amplitude. Thus, the data provide the foundations to construct electronic frameworks for the virtual quality assurance of a vast spectrum of rhythmic processes. The dataset is a suitable template for solving unsupervised and supervised machine learning algorithms. Readers may utilize this procedure to assure the quality of rhythmic processes by confirming the absence of deviations in rate and rhythm. Thus, this procedure provides the means to confirm the quality of the vast spectrum of rhythmic processes.

Project description:BackgroundBreast milk is the nutrient of choice for preterm infants. The World Health Organization has set a target of ensuring by 2030 that 70 % of infants younger than age 6 months are exclusively breastfed. The breastfeeding status of mothers of preterm infants is far below that target. Preterm infants are a special group, and there are many difficulties in and obstacles to adhering to breastfeeding. It is urgent to understand the current situation of breastfeeding among mothers of preterm infants, the change in their breastfeeding behaviors over time, and factors influencing breastfeeding in this population during different postpartum stages.ObjectiveWe aimed to explore potential breastfeeding behavior trajectories and analyze modifiable influencing factors to provide a reference for health care staff to identify risk groups of breastfeeding attrition at an early stage and develop targeted intervention measures.MethodsWe conducted a prospective, single-center, longitudinal study involving a cohort of mothers of preterm infants from July 2023 to May 2024. We administered the Breastfeeding Behavior Questionnaire, Breastfeeding Intention Questionnaire, Breastfeeding Prediction Scale, Breastfeeding Knowledge Questionnaire, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Data were collected at four timepoints: before discharge (T0) and at 6 weeks (T1), 4 months (T2), and 6 months postpartum (T3). A mixed model of latent variable growth was used to fit the trajectory of maternal breastfeeding behavior, and multiple logistic regression analysis was used to detect factors influencing the trajectory of breastfeeding behavior.ResultsThree types of heterogeneity tracks were found: a "high-level rising" group (36.5 %), "medium-level declining" group (26.0 %), and "low-level declining" group (37.5 %). Household income, spouse's educational background, smoking in the spouse, breastfeeding patterns before discharge (T0), perceived breastfeeding control and breastfeeding intention (T1), perceived breastfeeding control, breastfeeding intention, and breastfeeding knowledge (T2), and perceived breastfeeding control, breastfeeding positive attitude, and breastfeeding negative attitude (T3) were predictors of different profiles.ConclusionBreastfeeding is of great importance to promote the growth and development of preterm infants. However, the breastfeeding situation among mothers of preterm infants 6 months after delivery is not encouraging. The rate of exclusive breastfeeding is low and needs to be improved. Clarifying those variables related to the Theory of Planned Behavior, such as breastfeeding positive and negative attitudes, perceived breastfeeding control, breastfeeding knowledge, and postpartum depression score, can provide a theoretical basis for the early identification and screening of mothers at risk of exclusive breastfeeding attrition. Interventions should be delivered at scale to benefit all new mothers and infants.
