A high-performance Cu-Al dual-ion battery realized by high-concentration Cl^- electrolyte and CuS cathode.

ABSTRACT: We propose a new Cu-Al dual-ion battery that aqueous solution composed of LiCl, CuCl and AlCl₃ (LiCuAl) is used as the electrolyte, CuS is used as the cathode of aqueous aluminum ion battery for the first time and copper foil is used as the anode. The assembled Cu-Al dual-ion battery yields a reversible capacity of 538 mA h/g at 200 mA/g, and exhibits longterm cycling stability of over 200 cycles with 88.6% capacity retention at 1000 mA/g. Above excellent performance is inseparable from the three components of LiCuAl electrolyte and electrode materials. The Al-storage mechanism of CuS is proposed that the S-S bond in CuS lattice interacts with aluminum ions during the aluminum storage process. In addition, the charging and discharging process does not cause irreversible damage to the S-S bond, thus Cu-Al dual-ion battery with CuS as cathode shows great cycle stability.

Enabling a high-performance saltwater Al-air battery via ultrasonically driven electrolyte flow.

Project description:As an emerging battery technology, the Al-air flow battery (AAFB) exhibits high energy density due to the recycling of electrolytes, thus showing great potential as a type of clean and sustainable energy storage system. Conventionally, it employs an external mechanical pump to recycle the electrolyte. In this work, the saltwater AAFB in which the electrolyte is recycled by the ultrasonic capillary effect (rather than a mechanical pump) and the reaction chamber is agitated by ultrasonic vibration, is proposed and investigated. Our numerical simulations show that a travelling ultrasonic wave in the electrolyte flow system causes the capillary flow and agitation. The experimental results show that the percentage increase of the peak power density (relative to that with static electrolyte) can be up to about 7.5 times of that with the electrolyte flow driven by a mechanical pump, under the same electrolyte flow rate and concentration (3.3 ml min-1 and 3 M NaCl). The optimal peak power density, which can be achieved by optimizing the reaction chamber thickness, electrolyte concentration and ultrasonic vibration velocity, is 43.88 mW cm-2. This work illustrates that the acoustofluidic method can not only improve the discharge performance of the saltwater AAFB effectively, but also greatly decrease the energy consumption, weight and volume of the electrolyte driving unit of the AAFB. In addition, analyses based on experimental results show that the energy gain of a series/parallel battery system formed by multiple identical cells can be larger than one, if the number of cells in the system is large enough.

Semi-Flooded Sulfur Cathode with Ultralean Absorbed Electrolyte in Li-S Battery.

Project description:Lean electrolyte (small E/S ratio) is urgently needed to achieve high practical energy densities in Li-S batteries, but there is a distinction between the cathode's absorbed electrolyte (AE) which is cathode-intrinsic and total added electrolyte (E) which depends on cell geometry. While total pore volume in sulfur cathodes affects AE/S and performance, it is shown here that pore morphology, size, connectivity, and fill factor all matter. Compared to conventional thermally dried sulfur cathodes that usually render "open lakes" and closed pores, a freeze-dried and compressed (FDS-C) sulfur cathode is developed with a canal-capillary pore structure, which exhibits high mean performance and greatly reduces cell-to-cell variation, even at high sulfur loading (14.2 mg cm-2) and ultralean electrolyte condition (AE/S = 1.2 µL mg-1). Interestingly, as AE/S is swept from 2 to 1.2 µL mg-1, the electrode pores go from fully flooded to semi-flooded, and the coin cell still maintains function until (AE/S)min ≈ 1.2 µL mg-1 is reached. When scaled up to Ah-level pouch cells, the full-cell energy density can reach 481 Wh kg-1 as its E/S ≈ AE/S ratio can be reduced to 1.2 µL mg-1, proving high-performance pouch cells can actually be working in the ultralean, semi-flooded regime.

Toward Sustainable Li-S Battery Using Scalable Cathode and Safe Glyme-Based Electrolyte.

Project description:The search for safe electrolytes to promote the application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries may be supported by the investigation of viscous glyme solvents. Hence, electrolytes using nonflammable tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether added by lowly viscous 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) are herein thoroughly investigated for sustainable Li-S cells. The electrolytes are characterized by low flammability, a thermal stability of ∼200 °C, ionic conductivity exceeding 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 °C, a Li+ transference number of ∼0.5, electrochemical stability window from 0 to ∼4.4 V vs Li+/Li, and a Li stripping-deposition overpotential of ∼0.02 V. The progressive increase of the DOL content from 5 to 15 wt % raises the activation energy for Li+ motion, lowers the transference number, slightly limits the anodic stability, and decreases the Li/electrolyte resistance. The electrolytes are used in Li-S cells with a composite consisting of sulfur and multiwalled carbon nanotubes mixed in the 90:10 weight ratio, exploiting an optimized current collector. The cathode is preliminarily studied in terms of structure, thermal behavior, and morphology and exploited in a cell using standard electrolyte. This cell performs over 200 cycles, with sulfur loading increased to 5.2 mg cm-2 and the electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio decreased to 6 μL mg-1. The above sulfur cathode and the glyme-based electrolytes are subsequently combined in safe Li-S batteries, which exhibit cycle life and delivered capacity relevantly influenced by the DOL content within the studied concentration range.

Understanding Degradation at the Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode/Electrolyte Interface: Connecting Transition-Metal Dissolution Mechanisms to Electrolyte Composition.

Project description:Lithium transition-metal oxides (LiMn2O4 and LiMO2 where M = Ni, Mn, Co, etc.) are widely applied as cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries due to their considerable capacity and energy density. However, multiple processes occurring at the cathode/electrolyte interface lead to overall performance degradation. One key failure mechanism is the dissolution of transition metals from the cathode. This work presents results combining scanning electrochemical microscopy with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies to examine cathode degradation products. Our effort employs a LiMn2O4 (LMO) thin film as a model cathode to monitor the Mn dissolution process without the potential complications of conductive additive and polymer binders. We characterize the electrochemical behavior of LMO degradation products in various electrolytes, paired with ICP and EPR, to better understand the properties of Mn complexes formed following metal dissolution. We find that the identity of the lithium salt anions in our electrolyte systems [ClO4-, PF6-, and (CF3SO2)2N-] appears to affect the Mn dissolution process significantly as well as the electrochemical behavior of the generated Mn complexes. This implies that the mechanism for Mn dissolution is at least partially dependent on the lithium salt anion.

Harnessing organic electrolyte for non-corrosive and wide-temperature Na-Cl2 battery.

Project description:Rechargeable sodium-chlorine (Na-Cl2) batteries show great promise in grid energy storage applications due to their high electrochemical performance. However, the use of highly corrosive thionyl chloride (SOCl2)-based electrolytes has severely hindered their real-world applications. Here we show a non-corrosive ester (methyl dichloroacetate) as a promising alternative to SOCl2, which can form a non-corrosive electrolyte with aluminum chloride and sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide for high-performance rechargeable Na-Cl2 batteries. The resultant battery shows a reversible capacity of up to 1200 mAh g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1 calculated based on the mass of carbon with a discharge voltage of ~2.5 V, a wide temperature range from -40 to 80 °C, and long-term cycling stability of 700 cycles at -40 °C, which outperforms conventional rechargeable Na-Cl2 batteries and state-of-the-art Na metal batteries. The electrochemical performance and safety have been further extended to fibre batteries, which realize wearable applications of rechargeable Na-Cl2 batteries. Based on donor number and charge transfer as two key descriptors, we further propose the design principle of organic electrolytes for rechargeable Na-Cl2 batteries, which can fully unlock the designability and sustainability of organic solvents towards practical Na-Cl2 batteries.

Dataset on a primary lithium battery cell with a ferroelectric Li-glass electrolyte and MnO2 cathode.

Project description:Here we show the electrochemical data for a Ferroelectric Electrolyte Battery (FEB) Li/ferroelectric Li-glass electrolyte (Li2·99Ba0·005ClO) in cellulose/γ-MnO2 pouch-cell with (2.5 × 2.5 cm2) discharged with a green LED load. The Li2·99Ba0·005ClO electrolyte was synthesized and ground in ethanol. A cellulose matrix was dipped into the Li-glass/ethanol slurry. The γ-MnO2 based cathode was doctor bladed onto a carbon-coated aluminum foil current collector. The cell was assembled in an Ar-filled glove-box and it was not sealed and, therefore, it remained inside the glove-box while discharging with a green LED at approximately 24 °C for 334 days (>11 months) corresponding to 764 mAhg-1 of the active cathode and to 224 mAhg-1 of the electrolyte. The maximum capacity of γ-MnO2 is 209 mAhg-1 and of the MnO2 in the commercial cell is 308 mAhg-1, corresponding to LiMnO2; therefore, the capacity of the FEB is 370% the capacity of the γ-MnO2 and 250% the capacity of the MnO2 in the commercial cell. Moreover, the experimental capacity of the electrolyte minus the maximum capacity of the γ-MnO2 is 163 mAhg-1 of the electrolyte. The potential difference between anode and cathode in a diode is non-linear and dependent on the input current and, therefore, the plateaus in the potential vs time curves do not correspond to thermodynamic equilibria of the electrochemical cell energy source. Nevertheless, the maximum output current as well as the FEB cell's discharge profile may be determined with an LED and compared with traditional battery cells' profiles. The present data might be used by the electrochemical (in particular, battery), electrostatic and ferroelectric materials researchers and industrials for comparative analysis. Furthermore, it can be reused to calculate the maximum energy stored electrostatically in these devices.

Cosolvent electrolyte chemistries for high-voltage potassium-ion battery.

Project description:The poor oxidation resistance of traditional electrolytes has hampered the development of high-voltage potassium-ion battery technology. Here, we present a cosolvent electrolyte design strategy to overcome the high-voltage limitations of potassium-ion electrolyte chemistries. The cosolvent electrolyte breaks the dissolution limitation of the salt through ion-dipole interactions, significantly enlarging the anion-rich solvation clusters, as verified by the insitu synchrotron-based wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments. Furthermore, the large anion-rich solvation clusters also facilitate the formation of an effective electrode-electrolyte interphase, thereby enhancing compatibility with high-voltage electrodes. The cosolvent electrolyte enables K||Prussian blue cells (2-4.5 V) to operate for >700 cycles with a capacity retention of 91.9%. Our cosolvent electrolyte design strategy paves new avenues for the development of high-voltage potassium-ion batteries and beyond.

A High-Capacity Ammonium Vanadate Cathode for Zinc-Ion Battery.

Project description:Given the advantages of being abundant in resources, environmental benign and highly safe, rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) enter the global spotlight for their potential utilization in large-scale energy storage. Despite their preliminary success, zinc-ion storage that is able to deliver capacity > 400 mAh g-1 remains a great challenge. Here, we demonstrate the viability of NH4V4O10 (NVO) as high-capacity cathode that breaks through the bottleneck of ZIBs in limited capacity. The first-principles calculations reveal that layered NVO is a good host to provide fast Zn2+ ions diffusion channel along its [010] direction in the interlayer space. On the other hand, to further enhance Zn2+ ion intercalation kinetics and long-term cycling stability, a three-dimensional (3D) flower-like architecture that is self-assembled by NVO nanobelts (3D-NVO) is rationally designed and fabricated through a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. As a result, such 3D-NVO cathode possesses high capacity (485 mAh g-1) and superior long-term cycling performance (3000 times) at 10 A g-1 (~ 50 s to full discharge/charge). Additionally, based on the excellent 3D-NVO cathode, a quasi-solid-state ZIB with capacity of 378 mAh g-1 is developed.

17O NMR Spectroscopy in Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Materials: Challenges and Interpretation.

Project description:Modern studies of lithium-ion battery (LIB) cathode materials employ a large range of experimental and theoretical techniques to understand the changes in bulk and local chemical and electronic structures during electrochemical cycling (charge and discharge). Despite its being rich in useful chemical information, few studies to date have used 17O NMR spectroscopy. Many LIB cathode materials contain paramagnetic ions, and their NMR spectra are dominated by hyperfine and quadrupolar interactions, giving rise to broad resonances with extensive spinning sideband manifolds. In principle, careful analysis of these spectra can reveal information about local structural distortions, magnetic exchange interactions, structural inhomogeneities (Li+ concentration gradients), and even the presence of redox-active O anions. In this Perspective, we examine the primary interactions governing 17O NMR spectroscopy of LIB cathodes and outline how 17O NMR may be used to elucidate the structure of pristine cathodes and their structural evolution on cycling, providing insight into the challenges in obtaining and interpreting the spectra. We also discuss the use of 17O NMR in the context of anionic redox and the role this technique may play in understanding the charge compensation mechanisms in high-capacity cathodes, and we provide suggestions for employing 17O NMR in future avenues of research.

Integrin αvβ3-Targeted [64Cu]CuS Nanoparticles for PET/CT Imaging and Photothermal Ablation Therapy.

Project description:Copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles have been considered one of the most clinical relevant nanosystems because of their straightforward chemistry, small particle size, low toxicity, and intrinsic theranostic characteristics. In our previous studies, radioactive [64Cu]CuS nanoparticles were successfully developed to be used as efficient radiotracers for positron emission tomography and for photothermal ablation therapy of cancer cells using near-infrared laser irradiation. However, the major challenge of CuS nanoparticles as a theranostic platform is the lack of a means for effective targeted delivery to the tumor site. To overcome this challenge, we designed and synthesized angiogenesis-targeting [64Cu]CuS nanoparticles, which are coupled with cyclic RGDfK peptide [c(RGDfK)] through polyethylene glycol (PEG) linkers using click chemistry. In assessing their tumor-targeting efficacy, we found that the tumor uptakes of [64Cu]CuS-PEG-c(RGDfK) nanoparticles at 24 h after intravenous injection were significantly greater (8.6% ± 1.4% injected dose/gram of tissue) than those of nontargeted [64Cu]CuS-PEG nanoparticles (4.3% ± 1.2% injected dose/gram of tissue, p < 0.05). Irradiation of tumors in mice administered [64Cu]CuS-PEG-c(RGDfK) nanoparticles induced 98.7% necrotic areas. In contrast, irradiation of tumors in mice administered nontargeted CuS-PEG nanoparticles induced 59% necrotic areas ( p < 0.05). The angiogenesis-targeting [64Cu]CuS nanoparticles may serve as a promising platform for image-guided ablation therapy with high efficacy and minimal side effects in future clinical translation of this novel class of multifunctional nanomaterials.
