Greening aviation in era of COVID-19: Towards conceptualizing and operationalizing decarbonization.

ABSTRACT: Although net-zero greenhouse gas emission targets continue to gather burgeoning streams of research, there is a lacuna in current literature on the pathway challenges towards operationalizing decarbonization. The study advanced 2 × 2 matrix of an organizing framework of challenges in accomplishing net-zero emissions targets. Using the global airline industry as an illustrative context, the study provided deep insights on the pivotal industry, institutional, and organizational challenges in the era of COVID-19 such as fleet modernization, over-reliance on fossil fuel, slow progress in the development of hydrogen and electric aircraft, risk of corporate greenwashing, and divergent approaches adopted by airlines. The challenges can be classified into policy-oriented, organization-specific, and external/macro-environment factors. The contributions to theory and practices were identified and examined.

Conceptualizing, Contextualizing, and Operationalizing Race in Quantitative Health Sciences Research.

Project description:Differences in health outcomes across racial groups are among the most commonly reported findings in health disparities research. Often, these studies do not explicitly connect observed disparities to mechanisms of systemic racism that drive adverse health outcomes among racialized and other marginalized groups in the United States. Without this connection, investigators inadvertently support harmful narratives of biologic essentialism or cultural inferiority that pathologize racial identities and inhibit health equity. This paper outlines pitfalls in the conceptualization, contextualization, and operationalization of race in quantitative population health research and provides recommendations on how to appropriately engage in scientific inquiry aimed at understanding racial health inequities. Race should not be used as a measure of biologic difference, but rather as a proxy for exposure to systemic racism. Future studies should go beyond this proxy use and directly measure racism and its health impacts.VISUAL ABSTRACTAppeared as Annals "Online First" article.

Conceptualizing and Operationalizing Collaboration Among Multiple Caregivers of Older Adults.

Project description:ObjectivesIn many families, multiple caregivers support older adults living with dementia. Studying collaboration among caregivers requires consideration of conceptual and methodological issues that have not been fully explored. This study presents a framework for conceptualizing caregiver collaboration and an index that captures variation in collaboration among multiple caregivers within care networks.MethodsWe used data from the 2015 waves of the National Health and Aging Trends Study and National Study of Caregiving (NSOC) to operationalize collaboration among multiple caregivers (N = 1,298) of 552 care recipients (Mage = 83.69, SD = 7.73; 71.6% women; 47.9% possible/probable dementia; 38.9% people of color).ResultsThe care collaboration index considered individual and overlapping contributions while controlling for the size of the care network (caregivers in network responding to NSOC survey) and total network size (number of caregivers in network) in the statistical model. Larger care networks enabled more collaboration, both in general and across most types of tasks (βs > 0.38). Collaboration was greater among those caring for a Black or Hispanic care recipient, both in general and for household and medical/health tasks specifically (βs > 0.11). Collaboration was also greater among those caring for recipients with probable dementia, both in general and for most tasks (βs > 0.11) but not transportation-related tasks (p = .219).DiscussionResults are examined in the context of care network dynamics and proposed mechanisms linking care collaboration to outcomes for caregivers and recipients. Strengths and limitations of our conceptualization and operationalization of collaboration are discussed.

Evaluating the climate impact of aviation emission scenarios towards the Paris agreement including COVID-19 effects.

Project description:Aviation is an important contributor to the global economy, satisfying society's mobility needs. It contributes to climate change through CO2 and non-CO2 effects, including contrail-cirrus and ozone formation. There is currently significant interest in policies, regulations and research aiming to reduce aviation's climate impact. Here we model the effect of these measures on global warming and perform a bottom-up analysis of potential technical improvements, challenging the assumptions of the targets for the sector with a number of scenarios up to 2100. We show that although the emissions targets for aviation are in line with the overall goals of the Paris Agreement, there is a high likelihood that the climate impact of aviation will not meet these goals. Our assessment includes feasible technological advancements and the availability of sustainable aviation fuels. This conclusion is robust for several COVID-19 recovery scenarios, including changes in travel behaviour.

Understanding variability in petroleum jet fuel life cycle greenhouse gas emissions to inform aviation decarbonization.

Project description:A pressing challenge facing the aviation industry is to aggressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the face of increasing demand for aviation fuels. Climate goals such as carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onwards require continuous improvements in technology, operations, infrastructure, and most importantly, reductions in aviation fuel life cycle emissions. The Carbon Offsetting Scheme for International Aviation of the International Civil Aviation Organization provides a global market-based measure to group all possible emissions reduction measures into a joint program. Using a bottom-up, engineering-based modeling approach, this study provides the first estimates of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions from petroleum jet fuel on regional and global scales. Here we show that not all petroleum jet fuels are the same as the country-level life cycle emissions of petroleum jet fuels range from 81.1 to 94.8 gCO2e MJ-1, with a global volume-weighted average of 88.7 gCO2e MJ-1. These findings provide a high-resolution baseline against which sustainable aviation fuel and other emissions reduction opportunities can be prioritized to achieve greater emissions reductions faster.

Are there synergies in the decarbonization of aviation and shipping? An integrated perspective for the case of Brazil.

Project description:Aviation and shipping account for 22% of total transport-related CO2 emissions. Low-carbon fuels (such as biofuels and e-fuels) are the most promising alternatives to deeply decarbonize air and maritime transport. A number of technological routes focused on the production of renewable jet fuel can coproduce marine fuels, emulating the economies of scope of crude oil refineries. This work aims to investigate possible synergies in the decarbonization of aviation and shipping in Brazil, selected as an interesting case study. An Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) of national scope is used to explore different combinations of sectoral and national climate targets. This IAM represents not only the energy supply and transport systems but also the agricultural and land-use systems. In the absence of a deep mitigation policy for Brazil, results indicate synergies related to oilseed- and lignocellulosic-based biofuels production routes. Imposing a strict carbon budget to the Brazilian economy compatible with a world well below 2°C, the portfolio of aviation and shipping fuels changes significantly with the need for carbon dioxide removal strategies based on bioenergy. In such a scenario, synergies between the two sectors still exist, but most renewable marine energy supply is a by-product of synthetic diesel produced for road transport, revealing a synergy different from the one originally investigated by this work.

The Zoom Boom: How Video Calling Impacts Attitudes Towards Aesthetic Surgery in the COVID-19 Era.

Project description:BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has led to the widespread adoption of video calling. A parallel growth in aesthetic surgery demand has been documented.ObjectivesThe authors sought to identify associations between video call engagement and aesthetic surgery attitudes.MethodsWe distributed a cross-sectional survey via Amazon Mechanical Turk in November 2020. Respondents were asked to report their time spent video calling, video calling applications and features (eg, virtual backgrounds) they utilized, and aesthetic surgery attitudes employing the 15-item Acceptance of Cosmetic Surgery Scale (ACSS; higher scores indicate greater acceptance). ACSS scores were compared between video call users and non-users employing t tests. Pearson's correlation coefficient was employed to quantify associations between ACSS scores and time spent on calls and multivariable analysis to estimate associations between video call engagement and ACSS scores.ResultsA total of 295 respondents (mean age, 37.6 years; 49.5% female) completed the survey. Across all video call applications surveyed, video call users had higher ACSS scores than non-users. Increased time respondents spent looking at their own face on video call was moderately associated with higher ACSS scores (r = 0.48, P < 0.01), whereas time spent looking at another person's face was not associated with a change in ACSS scores (r = 0.09, P = 0.11). Increased video call utilization was associated with higher ACSS scores.ConclusionsIncreased video calling utilization is associated with increased acceptance of aesthetic surgery. Although the clinical significance of ACSS scores can be better elucidated, plastic surgeons should consider the effects of video calling on patient motivations for aesthetic surgery in the COVID-19 era.

The “Waves:” Conceptualizing Covid-19 as an Event Through One (Particularly) Contested Metaphor

Project description:This paper bridges scholarship on events with that on metaphors, positing metaphors as a proxy for competing “forms of eventfulness.” Focusing specifically on the “wave” metaphor, I draw from 471 Governor's Covid-19 Briefing transcripts across ten governors—five Democratic, five Republican—from the year 2020 to identify two competing forms of eventfulness with respect to the Covid-19 pandemic. As I show, using both discourse analytic techniques and simple text counts, Democratic governors take up the “wave” metaphor to present what I call “cascading” eventfulness, defined by multiple conditional moments of rupture, or “waves.” In contrast, Republican governors largely avoid the “wave” metaphor to present what I call “calamitous” eventfulness, defined by a singular, decisive moment of rupture. I conclude with a discussion of how my findings contribute to scholarship on eventfulness and political ideology.

Evaluation of patient attitudes towards the technical experience of synchronous teledermatology in the era of COVID-19.

Project description:Teledermatology has become critical for maintaining patient access to dermatologic services since the eruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey of first-time synchronous teledermatology patients (n = 100) seen by providers of the University of Mississippi Medical Center during Spring 2020 was designed to learn more about patient experiences associated with the technical challenges of synchronous teledermatology. Our patient population had considerable experience with various social media including Facebook (82%) and hardware platforms, such as Apple devices (66%). We found that the majority of patients were satisfied (88.9%) with their synchronous teledermatology encounter and 81.8% of patients did not experience a technical difficulty with their consult. About 15% of patients lost connection with their provider during their consultation. Furthermore, about 30% of patients rated "showing their skin" to their provider as "hardest" on a ten scale. However, about 34% of patients sent "store-and-forward"-type images to supplement their encounter. Despite overwhelming satisfaction with synchronous teledermatology, a majority prefer an in-person consultation for their next visit (68.7%). Synchronous teledermatology offers a critical service to patients to expand access to specialty consultation. It is well-received by patients despite technical barriers, especially during a global health crisis.

Extracellular Vesicles Analysis in the COVID-19 Era: Insights on Serum Inactivation Protocols towards Downstream Isolation and Analysis.

Project description:Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis, the handling of biological samples from confirmed or suspected SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals demanded the use of inactivation protocols to ensure laboratory operators' safety. While not standardized, these practices can be roughly divided into two categories, namely heat inactivation and solvent-detergent treatments. These routine procedures should also apply to samples intended for Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) analysis. Assessing the impact of virus-inactivating pre-treatments is therefore of pivotal importance, given the well-known variability introduced by different pre-analytical steps on downstream EVs isolation and analysis. Arguably, shared guidelines on inactivation protocols tailored to best address EVs-specific requirements will be needed among the analytical community, yet deep investigations in this direction have not yet been reported. We here provide insights into SARS-CoV-2 inactivation practices to be adopted prior to serum EVs analysis by comparing solvent/detergent treatment vs. heat inactivation. Our analysis entails the evaluation of EVs recovery and purity along with biochemical, biophysical and biomolecular profiling by means of a set of complementary analytical techniques: Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis, Western Blotting, Atomic Force Microscopy, miRNA content (digital droplet PCR) and tetraspanin assessment by microarrays. Our data suggest an increase in ultracentrifugation (UC) recovery following heat treatment; however, it is accompanied by a marked enrichment in EVs-associated contaminants. On the other hand, solvent/detergent treatment is promising for small EVs (<150 nm range), yet a depletion of larger vesicular entities was detected. This work represents a first step towards the identification of optimal serum inactivation protocols targeted to EVs analysis.
