Sentinel2GlobalLULC: A Sentinel-2 RGB image tile dataset for global land use/cover mapping with deep learning.

ABSTRACT: Land-Use and Land-Cover (LULC) mapping is relevant for many applications, from Earth system and climate modelling to territorial and urban planning. Global LULC products are continuously developing as remote sensing data and methods grow. However, there still exists low consistency among LULC products due to low accuracy in some regions and LULC types. Here, we introduce Sentinel2GlobalLULC, a Sentinel-2 RGB image dataset, built from the spatial-temporal consensus of up to 15 global LULC maps available in Google Earth Engine. Sentinel2GlobalLULC v2.1 contains 194877 single-class RGB image tiles organized into 29 LULC classes. Each image is a 224 × 224 pixels tile at 10 × 10 m resolution built as a cloud-free composite from Sentinel-2 images acquired between June 2015 and October 2020. Metadata includes a unique LULC annotation per image, together with level of consensus, reverse geo-referencing, global human modification index, and number of dates used in the composite. Sentinel2GlobalLULC is designed for training deep learning models aiming to build precise and robust global or regional LULC maps.

Project description:Land Use Land Cover (LULC) classification is pivotal to sustainable environment and natural resource management. It is critical in planning, monitoring, and management programs at various local and national levels. Monitoring changes in LULC patterns over time is crucial for understanding evolving landscapes. Traditionally, LULC classification has been achieved through satellite data by remote sensing, geographic information system (GIS) techniques, machine learning classifiers, and deep learning models. Semantic segmentation, a technique for assigning land cover classes to individual pixels in an image, is commonly employed for LULC mapping. In recent years, the deep learning revolution, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), has reshaped the field of computer vision and LULC classification. Deep architectures have consistently outperformed traditional methods, offering greater accuracy and efficiency. However, the availability of high-quality datasets has been a limiting factor. Bridging the gap between modern computer vision and remote sensing data analysis can revolutionize our understanding of the environment and drive breakthroughs in urban planning and ecosystem change research. The "Sen-2 LULC Dataset" has been created to facilitate this convergence. This dataset comprises of 213,761 pre-processed 10 m resolution images representing seven LULC classes. These classes encompass water bodies, dense forests, sparse forests, barren land, built-up areas, agricultural land, and fallow land. Importantly, each image may contain multiple coexisting land use and land cover classes, mirroring the real-world complexity of landscapes. The dataset is derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery sourced from the Copernicus Open Access Hub (https://scihub.copernicus.eu/) platform. It includes spectral bands B4, B3, and B2, corresponding to red, green, and blue (RGB) channels, and offers a spectral resolution of 10 m. The dataset also provides an equal number of mask images. Structured into six folders, the dataset offers training, testing, and validation sets for images and masks. Researchers across various domains can leverage this resource to advance LULC classification in the context of the Indian region. Additionally, it catalyzes fostering collaboration between remote sensing and computer vision communities, enabling novel insights into environmental dynamics and urban planning challenges.

Project description:Research on spatial non-stationarity of land-cover classification accuracy has been ongoing for over two decades with most of the work focusing on single date maps. We extend the understanding of thematic map accuracy spatial patterns by: (1) quantifying spatial patterns of map-reference agreement for class-specific land-cover change rather than class-specific land cover for both omission and commission expressions of map error; (2) reporting goodness-of-fit estimates for the empirical models, which have been lacking in previous assessments, and; (3) using the empirical model results to map the locations of the relative likelihoods of map-reference agreement for specific land-cover change classes. We evaluated 10 map-based explanatory variables in single and multivariable logistic regression models to predict the likelihood of agreement between map and reference land-cover change (2001-2011) labels using the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) 2011 land cover and accuracy data. Logistic models for omission error had better goodness-of-fit estimates than models for commission error. For the omission error models, the explanatory variable, density of the mapped class-specific change in the immediate neighbourhood surrounding the sample pixel, produced the best model fit results (Tjur coefficient of discrimination, D, ranged from 0.59 to 0.98) compared to multivariable models and all other single explanatory variable models. Maps of the predicted likelihood of map-reference agreement produced from the best fitting omission error models provide a spatially explicit description of spatial variation of classification uncertainty at both local and regional scales. Application of the models indicated higher likelihoods of agreement (>50%) comprised a greater proportion of the land-cover change class area than the proportion of the land-cover change class with lower likelihoods of agreement. NLCD users can apply reported equations to map land-cover change uncertainty.
