Project description:Heavy and extra heavy oil exploitation has attracted attention in the last few years because of the decline in the production of conventional crude oil. The high viscosity of heavy crude oil is the main challenge that obstructs its extraction. Consequently, catalytic aquathermolysis may be an effective solution to upgrade heavy crude oil to decrease its viscosity in reservoir conditions. In this regard, a series of acidic ionic liquids, 1-butyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonate (IL-4), 1-decyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonate (IL-10), and 1-hexadecyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonate (IL-16), were utilized in the aquathermolysis of heavy crude oil. Of each IL, 0.09 wt % reduced the viscosity of the crude oil by 89%, 93.7%, and 94.3%, respectively, after the addition of 30% water at 175 °C. ILs with alkyl chains equal to 10 carbon atoms or more displayed greater activity in viscosity reduction than that of ILs with alkyl chains lower than 10 carbon atoms. The molecular weight and asphaltene content of the crude oil were decreased after catalytic aquathermolysis. The compositional analysis of the crude oil before and after catalytic aquathermolysis showed that the molar percentage of lighter molecules from tridecanes to isosanes was increased by 26-45%, while heavier molecules such as heptatriacontanes, octatriacontanes, nonatriacontanes, and tetracontanes disappeared. The rheological behavior of the crude oil before and after the catalytic aquathermolytic process was studied, and the viscosity of the crude oil sample was reduced strongly from 678, 29.7, and 23.4 cp to 71.8, 16.9, and 2.7 cp at 25, 50, and 75 °C, respectively. The used ILs upgraded the heavy crude oil at a relatively low temperature.

Project description:Electrochemical capacitors (ECs) are electrical energy storage devices that have the potential to be very useful in a wide range of applications, especially where there is a large disparity between peak and average power demands. The use of ionic liquids (ILs) as electrolytes in ECs can increase the energy density of devices; however, the viscosity and conductivity of ILs adversely influence the power density of the device. We present experimental results where several ILs containing different cations have been employed as the electrolyte in cells containing mesoporous carbon electrodes. Specifically, the behavior of ILs containing an ether bond in an alkyl side chain are compared with those of a similar structure and size but containing purely alkyl side chains. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and constant current cycling, we show that the presence of the ether bond can dramatically increase the specific capacitance and reduce device resistance. These results have the important implication that such ILs can be used to tailor the physical properties and electrochemical performance of IL-based electrolytes.

Project description:Deposition of asphaltene aggregates can easily depress the oil production, because it may clog the wellbores, annulus, pipelines, and surface facilities. Moreover, asphaltene molecules have a negative effect on the catalytic reactions in the refinery process. Therefore, in this work, three different ionic liquids (IL-H, IL-CH3, and IL-NO2) were synthesized, and characterized using FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy to evaluate their efficiency as asphaltene dispersants. The thermal gravimetric analysis of the prepared ILs showed that IL-H, IL-NO2, and IL-CH3 were thermally stable up to 280 °C. The ILs showed good dispersion activity of the petroleum asphaltenes, where the asphaltene onset precipitation (AOP) was changed from 7.5 to 10.5, 11, and 13.5 ml added n-heptane after the use of IL-H, IL-NO2, and IL-CH3, respectively. Moreover, the colloidal instability index of crude oil was changed from 0.92 (unstable asphaltene) to 0.69 (stable asphaltene). It is noted during the experiments that the presence of an alkyl chain attached to the ionic liquid moiety increases the efficiency of the dispersant. This may be owing to the formation of π-π* with asphaltene molecules due to the presence of electron donating group. Quantum chemical parameters were calculated for the prepared ILs, and the theoretical data confirmed the experimental results.

Project description:A range of protic ionic liquids (PILs) based on tri-n-alkylammonium cations and mesylate/triflate anions were incorporated into a polymer matrix to form ionogels (IGs). These systems were investigated for their thermal and electrochemical behaviour, as well as under the aspect of ion motion via PFG-NMR. The ionic conductivities of the ILs/IGs are in the range of 10-4-10-3 S/cm-1 at elevated temperatures and the diffusion coefficients are around 10-11 m2 s-1. Successful 3D printing of an IG with 70 wt % of IL is possible via stereolithography approaches, opening up applications in, e. g., structured ion-conductive membranes.

Project description:Glyme-based lithium-ion electrolytes have received considerable attention from the scientific community due to their improved safety, as well as electrochemical and thermal stability over carbonate-based electrolytes. However, these electrolytes suffer from major drawbacks such as high viscosities. To overcome the challenges that hinder their full potential, the molecular description of glyme-based lithium electrolytes in the high-concentration regime, particularly in the solvate ionic liquid (SIL) and high-concentration electrolyte (HCE) regimes, is needed. In this study, model glyme-based electrolytes based on a lithium thiocyanate and either tetraglyme (G4) or a mixture of monoglyme (G1) and diglyme (G2) were investigated as a function of the solvent-to-lithium ratio using linear and nonlinear IR spectroscopies, in combination with ab initio computations as well as electrochemical methods . The transport properties reveal enhanced ionicities in the HCE and SIL regimes ([O]/[Li] ≤ 5) compared to the regular electrolytes (REs, with [O]/[Li] > 5) in both pure (G4) and mixed (G1:G2) glymes. IR and ab initio computations relate these larger ionicities to the higher concentration of charged aggregates in the HCE and SIL electrolytes ([O]/[Li] ≤ 5). Moreover, it was observed that the use of mixed glymes appears to have a minimal effect on the transport properties of REs but exhibits deleterious effects on SILs. Overall, the results provide a molecular framework for describing the local structure of lithium glyme-based electrolytes and demonstrate the key role that the nature of glyme solvation plays in the molecular structure and consequently the macroscopic properties of the Li-glyme SILs, HCEs, and REs.

Project description:Crude oil upgrading under methane has been reported to be an economically and environmentally promising process, while the advantageous effect of methane beyond a reactant is not fully explained. In this work, the catalytic performances, physicochemical properties and regenerability of used catalysts after crude oil upgrading under methane and nitrogen are investigated by n-butylbenzene model compound studies, catalyst characterizations and density functional theory calculations. Comparing to nitrogen, methane exhibits a protective effect on the charged catalyst despite the limited conversion, leading to better product quality and catalyst stability. This protective effect is attributed to the interaction between methane and catalytic active sites, which mainly occurs in the internal pores of the zeolitic catalyst support, resulting in unique coke distribution and inhibition of metal deposition. The interactive role of methane beyond a reactant, which is previously underestimated, is suggested to be critical for better performances of catalysts in relevant reaction processes.

Project description:Supporting electrolytes contain inert dissolved salts to increase the conductivity, to change microenvironments near the electrodes and to assist in electrochemical reactions. This combined experimental and computational study examines the impact of supporting salts on the ion transport and related limited currents in electrochemical cells. A physical model that describes the multi-ion transport in liquid electrolytes and the resulting concentration gradients is presented. This model and its parameterization are evaluated by the measured limited current of the copper deposition in a CuSO4 electrolyte under a gradually increasing amount of Na2SO4 that acts as a supporting salt. A computational sensibility analysis of the transport model reveals that the shared conductance between the ions lowers the limited currents with larger supporting salt concentrations. When the supporting salt supplies most of the conductance, the electric-field-driven transport of the electrochemically active ions becomes negligible so that the limited current drops to the diffusion-limited current that is described by Fick's first law. The transition from diluted supporting electrolyte to the case of ionic liquids is elucidated with the transport model, highlighting the different physical transport mechanisms in a non-conducting (polar) and a conducting (ionic) solvent.

Project description:Solid-state polymer electrolytes have become promising candidates for high-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, they suffer from low ionic conductivities at room temperature. In this work, two types of composite polymer electrolytes based on a double-network polymer, an ionic liquid (IL) of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (Pyr14TFSI) or 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl) imide (EmimTFSI), and bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonamide lithium salt (LiTFSI) were prepared by a facile one-pot method. The two types of CPEs possess good mechanical properties, excellent thermal stability, and high ionic conductivities greater than 10-4 S cm-1 at 20 °C with 26 wt% IL. The performance diversity of the CPEs was also carefully investigated through a series of electrochemical measurements. Although the CPEs containing EmimTFSI show higher ionic conductivities than those of CPEs with Pyr14TFSI, the latter ones have wider electrochemical stability windows and better resistance to the growth of lithium dendrites. Moreover, CPE with 34 wt% Pyr14TFSI leads to Li/LiFePO4 batteries with favorable rate capability and cycling stability and a columbic efficiency of 98.8% at 20 °C, which suggests that CPEs are promising for practical application in solid-state LMBs.

Project description:Interfaces of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are important for both applications and basic science and are therefore intensely studied. However, the evolution of their interface structure with the cation's alkyl chain length [Formula: see text] from Coulomb to van der Waals interaction domination has not yet been studied for even a single broad homologous RTIL series. We present here such a study of the liquid-air interface for [Formula: see text], using angstrom-resolution X-ray methods. For [Formula: see text], a typical "simple liquid" monotonic surface-normal electron density profile [Formula: see text] is obtained, like those of water and organic solvents. For [Formula: see text], increasingly more pronounced nanoscale self-segregation of the molecules' charged moieties and apolar chains yields surface layering with alternating regions of headgroups and chains. The layering decays into the bulk over a few, to a few tens, of nanometers. The layering periods and decay lengths, their linear [Formula: see text] dependence, and slopes are discussed within two models, one with partial-chain interdigitation and the other with liquid-like chains. No surface-parallel long-range order is found within the surface layer. For [Formula: see text], a different surface phase is observed above melting. Our results also impact general liquid-phase issues like supramolecular self-aggregation and bulk-surface structure relations.

Project description:Two different ionic liquid-based biopolymer electrolyte systems were prepared using a solution casting technique. Corn starch and lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF₆) were employed as polymer and salt, respectively. Additionally, two different counteranions of ionic liquids, viz. 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BmImPF₆) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (also known as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium triflate) (BmImTf) were used and studied in this present work. The maximum ionic conductivities of (1.47 ± 0.02) × 10-4 and (3.21 ± 0.01) × 10-4 S∙cm-1 were achieved with adulteration of 50 wt% of BmImPF₆ and 80 wt% of BmImTf, respectively at ambient temperature. Activated carbon-based electrodes were prepared and used in supercapacitor fabrication. Supercapacitors were then assembled using the most conducting polymer electrolyte from each system. The electrochemical properties of the supercapacitors were then analyzed. The supercapacitor containing the triflate-based biopolymer electrolyte depicted a higher specific capacitance with a wider electrochemical stability window compared to that of the hexafluorophosphate system.
