ABSTRACT: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about serious consequences in business world practices. Among these, flexible working policies have increased to a great extent. This has resulted in serious problems in the work-life balance. In this context, conditions such as having children and marital status have been important factors that can affect work engagement among flexible workers in the post pandemic era. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship of marital status, job experience and having children with work engagement among white-collar workers who work in flexible hours. Data is collected through surveys from 199 flexible working employees. ANOVA and T-tests were employed to analyze the data. The results indicate that only one of the sub-dimensions of work engagement-namely absorption- changes according to their marital status, and yet, the work engagement is not related to having children. In addition, it is seen that there is a significant relationship between job experience and work engagement.

Project description:BackgroundTo ensure workforce stability in China's healthcare system and maintain high-quality care, it is essential to comprehensively understand the interplay of factors contributing to turnover intention of healthcare workers. This study aims to examine the associations between potential factors and turnover intention in healthcare workers and explore the mediating effect of job satisfaction and work engagement in the association between them.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, a random sample of 1060 healthcare workers working in 98 public medical institutions were recruited to rate their turnover intention in 2018 in Shenzhen, China. Information on socio-demographic characteristics, job-related factors, turnover intention, job satisfaction, work engagement, work stress and doctor-patient relationship of participants were collected. Pearson's chi-squared tests and binary logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the association between these factor and turnover intention. Mediation analysis was used to explore the roles of potential mediators and moderators.ResultsThe results showed that age (OR: 0.35, 95%CI: 0.16 to 0.72), tenure (OR: 0.98, 95%CI: 0.96 to 0.99), administrative positions (OR: 0.33, 95%CI: 0.16 to 0.63), and night shift frequency (OR: 1.84, 95%CI: 1.26 to 2.67) were significantly associated with turnover intention. We identified the mediating effect of job satisfaction and work engagement in the relationship between administrative positions and turnover intention, while the suppressing effect in the relationship between professional titles and turnover intention. Additionally, we found that monthly income plays a moderating role in the relationship between work engagement and turnover intention, and in the association between professional titles and turnover intention.ConclusionsGreater job satisfaction and engagement, along with reasonable remuneration, were found to be associated with lower turnover intention among healthcare workers. Employers should proactively monitor the dynamic interactions among these factors and then develop more tailored interventions in order to alleviate the ongoing loss of healthcare workers.

Project description:BackgroundHealthcare workers, who protect and improve the health of individuals, are critical to the success of health systems and achieving national and global health goals. To respond effectively to the healthcare needs of populations, healthcare workers themselves must be in a good state of health. However, healthcare workers face various psychosocial pressures, including having to work night shifts, long working hours, demands of patient care, medical disputes, workplace violence, and emotional distress due to poor interactions with patients and colleagues, and poor promotion prospects. Constant exposure to these psychosocial hazards adversely impacts healthcare workers' health. Consequently, this study aimed to examine the influence of effort-reward imbalance, job satisfaction, and work engagement on self-rated health of healthcare workers. The results would be conducive to providing policy guidance to improve the health of healthcare workers.MethodsWe analysed the data of 1327 participants from The Chinese Sixth National Health and Services Survey in Sichuan Province that was conducted from August 2018 to October 2018. Structural equation modelling was used to test the hypothesized relationships among the variables.ResultsOnly 40.1% of healthcare workers rated their health as 'relatively good' or 'good'. Effort-reward imbalance had a significant negative correlation with self-rated health (β = - 0.053, 95% CI [- 0.163, - 0.001]). The associations of effort-reward imbalance and work engagement with self-rated health were both mediated by job satisfaction (95% CI [- 0.150, - 0.050] and [0.011, 0.022]), and work engagement mediated the relationship between effort-reward imbalance and self-rated health (95% CI [- 0.064, - 0.008]).ConclusionIn order to improve the health of healthcare workers, administrators should balance effort and reward and provide opportunities for career development and training. In addition, health managers should help healthcare workers realize the significance and value of their work and keep them actively devoted to their work through incentive mechanisms.

Project description:BackgroundPhysical frailty is a common characteristic of older people with the ageing process and has been viewed as a major public health issue. The longitudinal association between different social engagement and physical frailty among older people has not been explored adequately in China. Marital status forms a critical context for the link between social engagement and frailty among older people, which might constitute a moderating process. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the longitudinal association between social engagement and the changes in physical frailty among Chinese older adults, and to examine whether the association between social engagement and frailty differs by marital status.MethodsThe data use in this study were from the data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study aged 60+ years from 2011 to 2015. A total of 6575 respondents who participated in at least one follow-up wave were included in the analysis. The relationship between social engagement and changes in frailty over time, and the moderating role of marital status were estimated using individual fixed-effects models. Sensitive analyses were conducted to test the robustness of the results.ResultsAfter adjusting the confounders, participants who interact with friends (Coef: -1.309, P < 0.001), engaging in hobby groups (Coef: -1.189, P < 0.001), engaging in sports groups (Coef: -0.945, P = 0.001), and volunteering (Coef: -1.957, P = 0.001) with a frequency of almost daily had a significantly lower frailty risk than participants who never engaging in those activities. The association between frequent engaging in hobby groups and physical frailty was strongest for unmarried than married older adults (Coef: -1.325, P = 0.031).ConclusionsFrequent social engagement might help to decrease the risk of frailty in the Chinese older population. This finding has important implications for public health policy and encourages the incorporation of a broad range of social engagement into the daily lives of older individuals. Specially, encouraging unmarried older adults to engage in intellectual activities, such as playing chess or Mahjong with others, may be an effective way to reduce physical frailty.
