A global dynamic runoff application and dataset based on the assimilation of GPM, SMAP, and GCN250 curve number datasets.

ABSTRACT: Runoff modelling is a crucial element in hydrologic sciences. However, a global runoff database is not currently available at a resolution higher than 0.1°. We use the recently developed Global Curve Number dataset (GCN250) to develop a dynamic runoff application (2015 - present) and that can be accessed via a Google Earth Engine application. We also provide a global mean monthly runoff dataset for April 2015-2021 in GeoTIFF format at a 250-meter resolution. We utilize soil moisture and GPM rainfall to dynamically retrieve the appropriate curve number and generate the corresponding runoff anywhere on Earth. Mean annual global runoff ratio results for 2021 were comparable to the runoff ratio from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (0.079 vs. 0.077, respectively). Mean annual global runoff from GCN and GLDAS were within 11% each other for 2020-2021 (0.18 vs. 0.16 mm/day, respectively). The GCN250 runoff application and the dataset are useful for many water applications such hydrologic design, land management, water resources management, and flood risk assessment.

Project description:This study compares different methods to extract soil moisture information through the assimilation of Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) observations. Neural Network (NN) and physically-based SMAP soil moisture retrievals were assimilated into the NASA Catchment model over the contiguous United States for April 2015 to March 2017. By construction, the NN retrievals are consistent with the global climatology of the Catchment model soil moisture. Assimilating the NN retrievals without further bias correction improved the surface and root zone correlations against in situ measurements from 14 SMAP core validation sites (CVS) by 0.12 and 0.16, respectively, over the model-only skill and reduced the surface and root zone ubRMSE by 0.005 m3 m-3 and 0.001 m3 m-3, respectively. The assimilation reduced the average absolute surface bias against the CVS measurements by 0.009 m3 m-3, but increased the root zone bias by 0.014 m3 m-3. Assimilating the NN retrievals after a localized bias correction yielded slightly lower surface correlation and ubRMSE improvements, but generally the skill differences were small. The assimilation of the physically-based SMAP Level-2 passive soil moisture retrievals using a global bias correction yielded similar skill improvements, as did the direct assimilation of locally bias-corrected SMAP brightness temperatures within the SMAP Level-4 soil moisture algorithm. The results show that global bias correction methods may be able to extract more independent information from SMAP observations compared to local bias correction methods, but without accurate quality control and observation error characterization they are also more vulnerable to adverse effects from retrieval errors related to uncertainties in the retrieval inputs and algorithm. Furthermore, the results show that using global bias correction approaches without a simultaneous re-calibration of the land model processes can lead to a skill degradation in other land surface variables.

Project description:The Soil Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS-CN, or CN) is a widely used method to estimate runoff from rainfall events. It has been adapted to many parts of the world with different land uses, land cover types, and climatic conditions and successfully applied to situations ranging from simple runoff calculations and land use change assessment to comprehensive hydrologic/water quality simulations. However, the CN method lacks the ability to incorporate seasonal variations in vegetated surface conditions, and unnoticed landuse/landcover (LULC) change that shape infiltration and storm runoff. Plant phenology is a main determinant of changes in hydrologic processes and water balances across seasons through its influence on surface roughness and evapotranspiration. This study used regression analysis to develop a dynamic CN (CNNDVI) based on seasonal variations in the remotely-sensed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to monitor intra-annual plant phenological development. A time series of 16-day MODIS NDVI (MOD13Q1 Collection 5) images were used to monitor vegetation development and provide NDVI data necessary for CNNDVI model calibration and validation. Twelve years of rainfall and runoff data (2001-2012) from four small watersheds located in the Konza Prairie Biological Station, Kansas were used to develop, calibrate, and validate the method. Results showed CNNDVI performed significantly better in predicting runoff with calibrated CNNDVI runoff increasing by approximately 0.74 for every unit increase in observed runoff compared to 0.46 for SCS-CN runoff and was more highly correlated to observed runoff (r = 0.78 vs. r = 0.38). In addition, CNNDVI runoff had better NSE (0.53) and PBIAS (4.22) compared to the SCS-CN runoff (-0.87 and -94.86 respectively). In the validated model, CNNDVI runoff increased by approximately 0.96 for every unit of observed runoff, while SCS-CN runoff increased by 0.49. Validated runoff was also better correlated to observed runoff than SCS-CN runoff (r = 0.52 vs. r = 0.33). These findings suggest that the CNNDVI can yield improved estimates of surface runoff from precipitation events, leading to more informed water and land management decisions.
