Refractory high entropy alloy dataset with room temperature ductility screening.

ABSTRACT: This dataset contains 82 unique refractory alloys experimentally synthesized via arc melting and subject to screening tests for hardness and room temperature ductility. Most compositions fall under the definition of high entropy or complex concentrated alloys, but simpler ternary compositions are also included. Hardness was collected via a standard indentation technique while compressive ductility was quantified using a custom high throughput experimental approach yielding a ductility ranking from 0 to 5. The unique ductility screening test was developed to provide directional information for alloy development at a low cost and rapid pace using conventional test equipment. Predicted solidus temperature for all alloys is also included based on thermodynamic modelling. The dataset should be of interest to those exploring the emerging class of refractory high entropy alloys and particularly useful where optimization is sought balancing strength, ductility, and high melting temperature.

Microstructural Design for Improving Ductility of An Initially Brittle Refractory High Entropy Alloy.

Project description:Typically, refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs), comprising a two-phase ordered B2 + BCC microstructure, exhibit extraordinarily high yield strengths, but poor ductility at room temperature, limiting their engineering application. The poor ductility is attributed to the continuous matrix being the ordered B2 phase in these alloys. This paper presents a novel approach to microstructural engineering of RHEAs to form an "inverted" BCC + B2 microstructure with discrete B2 precipitates dispersed within a continuous BCC matrix, resulting in improved room temperature compressive ductility, while maintaining high yield strength at both room and elevated temperature.

Room-temperature super-elongation in high-entropy alloy nanopillars.

Project description:Nanoscale small-volume metallic materials typically exhibit high strengths but often suffer from a lack of tensile ductility due to undesirable premature failure. Here, we report unusual room-temperature uniform elongation up to ~110% at a high flow stress of 0.6-1.0 GPa in single-crystalline <110>-oriented CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy nanopillars with well-defined geometries. By combining high-resolution microscopy and large-scale atomistic simulations, we reveal that this ultrahigh uniform tensile ductility is attributed to spatial and synergistic coordination of deformation twinning and dislocation slip, which effectively promote deformation delocalization and delay necking failure. These joint and/or sequential activations of the underlying displacive deformation mechanisms originate from chemical compositional heterogeneities at the atomic level and resulting wide variations in generalized stacking fault energy and associated dislocation activities. Our work provides mechanistic insights into superplastic deformations of multiple-principal element alloys at the nanoscale and opens routes for designing nanodevices with high mechanical reliability.

Hydrogen enhances strength and ductility of an equiatomic high-entropy alloy.

Project description:Metals are key materials for modern manufacturing and infrastructures as well as transpot and energy solutions owing to their strength and formability. These properties can severely deteriorate when they contain hydrogen, leading to unpredictable failure, an effect called hydrogen embrittlement. Here we report that hydrogen in an equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) leads not to catastrophic weakening, but instead increases both, its strength and ductility. While HEAs originally aimed at entropy-driven phase stabilization, hydrogen blending acts opposite as it reduces phase stability. This effect, quantified by the alloy's stacking fault energy, enables nanotwinning which increases the material's work-hardening. These results turn a bane into a boon: hydrogen does not generally act as a harmful impurity, but can be utilized for tuning beneficial hardening mechanisms. This opens new pathways for the design of strong, ductile, and hydrogen tolerant materials.

Transition from poor ductility to room-temperature superplasticity in a nanostructured aluminum alloy.

Project description:Recent developments of nanostructured materials with grain sizes in the nanometer to submicrometer range have provided ground for numerous functional properties and new applications. However, in terms of mechanical properties, bulk nanostructured materials typically show poor ductility despite their high strength, which limits their use for structural applications. The present article shows that the poor ductility of nanostructured alloys can be changed to room-temperature superplastisity by a transition in the deformation mechanism from dislocation activity to grain-boundary sliding. We report the first observation of room-temperature superplasticity (over 400% tensile elongations) in a nanostructured Al alloy by enhanced grain-boundary sliding. The room-temperature grain-boundary sliding and superplasticity was realized by engineering the Zn segregation along the Al/Al boundaries through severe plastic deformation. This work introduces a new boundary-based strategy to improve the mechanical properties of nanostructured materials for structural applications, where high deformability is a requirement.

Effects of strain rate on room- and cryogenic-temperature compressive properties in metastable V10Cr10Fe45Co35 high-entropy alloy.

Project description:Quasi-static and dynamic compressive properties of an FCC-based metastable HEA (composition; V10Cr10Fe45Co35 (at.%)) showing both Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP) and TWinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) were investigated at room and cryogenic temperatures. During the quasi-static and dynamic compression at room temperature, the FCC to BCC TRIP occurred inside FCC grains, and resulted in very high strain-hardening rate and consequently maximum compressive strength over 1.6 GPa. The dynamic compressive strength was higher by 240 MPa than the quasi-static strength because of strain-rate-hardening effect, and kept increasing with a high strain-hardening rate as the twinning became activated. The cryogenic-temperature strength was higher than the room-temperature strength as the FCC to BCC TRIP amount increased by the decrease in stability of FCC phase with decreasing temperature. Under dynamic loading at cryogenic temperature, twins were not formed because the increase in SFE due to adiabatic heating might not be enough to reach the TWIP regime. However, the dynamically compressed specimen showed the higher strength than the quasi-statically compressed specimen as the strain-rate-hardening effect was added with the TRIP.

Cryogenic strength improvement by utilizing room-temperature deformation twinning in a partially recrystallized VCrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy.

Project description:The excellent cryogenic tensile properties of the CrMnFeCoNi alloy are generally caused by deformation twinning, which is difficult to achieve at room temperature because of insufficient stress for twinning. Here, we induced twinning at room temperature to improve the cryogenic tensile properties of the CrMnFeCoNi alloy. Considering grain size effects on the critical stress for twinning, twins were readily formed in the coarse microstructure by cold rolling without grain refinement by hot rolling. These twins were retained by partial recrystallization and played an important role in improving strength, allowing yield strengths approaching 1 GPa. The persistent elongation up to 46% as well as the tensile strength of 1.3 GPa are attributed to additional twinning in both recrystallized and non-recrystallization regions. Our results demonstrate that non-recrystallized grains, which are generally avoided in conventional alloys because of their deleterious effect on ductility, can be useful in achieving high-strength high-entropy alloys.

Nanostructuring with Structural-Compositional Dual Heterogeneities Enhances Strength-Ductility Synergy in Eutectic High Entropy Alloy.

Project description:A lamellar (L12 + B2) AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high entropy alloy (EHEA) was severely deformed by a novel hybrid-rolling process. During hybrid-rolling, the deformation was carried out in two stages, namely cryo-rolling followed by warm-rolling at 600 °C. The strain (ε) imparted in each of these steps was identical ~1.2, resulting in a total strain of ε~2.4 (corresponding to 90% reduction in thickness). The novel processing strategy resulted in an extremely heterogeneous microstructure consisting of retained lamellar and transformed nanocrystalline regions. Each of these regions consisted of different phases having different crystal structures and chemical compositions. The novel structure-composition dual heterogeneous microstructure originated from the stored energy of the cryo-rolling which accelerated transformations during subsequent low temperature warm-rolling. The dual heterogeneous microstructure yielded an unprecedented combination of strength (~2000 MPa) and ductility (~8%). The present study for the first time demonstrated that dual structure-composition heterogeneities can be a novel microstructural design strategy for achieving outstanding strength-ductility combination in multiphase high entropy alloys.

Integrated design of aluminum-enriched high-entropy refractory B2 alloys with synergy of high strength and ductility.

Project description:Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) are promising high-temperature structural materials. Their large compositional space poses great design challenges for phase control and high strength-ductility synergy. The present research pioneers using integrated high-throughput machine learning with Monte Carlo simulations supplemented by ab initio calculations to effectively navigate phase selection and mechanical property predictions, developing single-phase ordered B2 aluminum-enriched RHEAs (Al-RHEAs) demonstrating high strength and ductility. These Al-RHEAs achieve remarkable mechanical properties, including compressive yield strengths up to 1.7 gigapascals, fracture strains exceeding 50%, and notable high-temperature strength retention. They also demonstrate a tensile yield strength of 1.0 gigapascals with a ductility of 9%, albeit with B2 ordering. Furthermore, we identify valence electron count domains for alloy ductility and brittleness with the explanation from density functional theory and provide crucial insights into elemental influence on atomic ordering and mechanical performance. The work sets forth a strategic blueprint for high-throughput alloy design and reveals fundamental principles governing the mechanical properties of advanced structural alloys.

A quinary WTaCrVHf nanocrystalline refractory high-entropy alloy withholding extreme irradiation environments.

Project description:In the quest of new materials that can withstand severe irradiation and mechanical extremes for advanced applications (e.g. fission & fusion reactors, space applications, etc.), design, prediction and control of advanced materials beyond current material designs become paramount. Here, through a combined experimental and simulation methodology, we design a nanocrystalline refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) system. Compositions assessed under extreme environments and in situ electron-microscopy reveal both high thermal stability and radiation resistance. We observe grain refinement under heavy ion irradiation and resistance to dual-beam irradiation and helium implantation in the form of low defect generation and evolution, as well as no detectable grain growth. The experimental and modeling results-showing a good agreement-can be applied to design and rapidly assess other alloys subjected to extreme environmental conditions.

Ultra-strong tungsten refractory high-entropy alloy via stepwise controllable coherent nanoprecipitations.

Project description:High-performance refractory alloys with ultrahigh strength and ductility are in demand for a wide range of critical applications, such as plasma-facing components. However, it remains challenging to increase the strength of these alloys without seriously compromising their tensile ductility. Here, we put forward a strategy to "defeat" this trade-off in tungsten refractory high-entropy alloys by stepwise controllable coherent nanoprecipitations (SCCPs). The coherent interfaces of SCCPs facilitate the dislocation transmission and relieve the stress concentrations that can lead to premature crack initiation. As a consequence, our alloy displays an ultrahigh strength of 2.15 GPa with a tensile ductility of 15% at ambient temperature, with a high yield strength of 1.05 GPa at 800 °C. The SCCPs design concept may afford a means to develop a wide range of ultrahigh-strength metallic materials by providing a pathway for alloy design.
