Due to the toxicity of the compound, these data are important especially in the field of wet processing techniques for the automated dosage of TMAH.

Some Features of Surfactant Organization in DNA Solutions at Various NaCl Concentrations.

Project description:The photosensitive azobenzene-containing surfactant C4-Azo-OC6TMAB is a promising agent for reversible DNA packaging in a solution. The simulation of the trans-isomer surfactant organization into associates in a solution with and without salt as well as its binding to DNA at different NaCl concentrations was carried out by molecular dynamics. Experimental data obtained by spectral and hydrodynamic methods were used to verify the results of simulation. It was shown that head-to-tail aggregates with close to antiparallel orientation of surfactant molecules were formed at certain NaCl and surfactant concentrations (below critical micelle concentration). Such aggregates have two positively charged ends, and therefore, they can be attracted to negatively charged DNA phosphates far located along the chain, as well as those that belong to different molecules. This contributes to the formation of intermolecular DNA-DNA contacts, and this way, the experimentally observed precipitation of DNA can be explained.

Controlling the Dissolution Behavior of (Meth)acrylate-Based Photoresist Polymers in Tetramethylammonium Hydroxide by Introducing Adamantyl Groups.

Project description:(Meth)acrylate polymers are commonly used as photoresist materials in photolithography. However, these polymers encounter the problem of swelling during the development process. To address this, we explored the use of a hydrophobic group to control the solubility in the hydrophilic developer. In this study, we synthesized two types of polymers to evaluate the impact of the developer on (meth)acrylate polymers for photoresist applications. Adamantyl methacrylate (AdMA) was selected as the hydrophobic group, while 2-ethoxyethyl acrylate (2-EEA) served as the hydrophilic group, enabling the synthesis of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers. Our goal was to assess how the presence of adamantyl monomers influenced the solubility of the polymer. This study demonstrated that solubility was primarily influenced by functional groups, particularly hydrophobic groups, rather than other factors. Polymers with more than 50% hydrophobic groups can be effectively controlled for their solubility in TMAH. These findings show that the solubility of photoresist polymers in TMAH can be tuned by incorporating a high proportion of hydrophobic groups. The study further confirms the role of adamantyl monomers as effective hydrophobic (aliphatic) groups in modulating the solubility of (meth)acrylate polymers in developer solutions.

Surface Affinity of Tetramethylammonium Iodide in Aqueous Solutions: A Combined Experimental and Computer Simulation Study.

Project description:The surface affinity of tetramethylammonium iodide (TMAI) in aqueous solutions is investigated by surface tension measurements and molecular dynamics computer simulations. Experiments, performed in the entire composition range of solubility using the pendant drop method with two different setups, clearly reveal that TMAI is a weakly capillary active salt. Computer simulations performed with the AMBER force field reproduce the experimental data very well, while two other major force fields (i.e., CHARMM and OPLS) can still reproduce the experimental trend qualitatively; however, even qualitative reproduction of the experimental trend requires scaling down the ion charges according to the Leontyev-Stuchebrukhov correction. On the other hand, the GROMOS force field fails in reproducing the experimentally confirmed capillary activity of TMAI. Molecular dynamics simulation results show that, among the two ions, iodide has a clearly larger surface affinity than tetramethylammonium (TMA+). Further, the adsorption of the I- anions is strictly limited to the first molecular layer beneath the liquid-vapor interface, which is followed by several layers of their depletion. On the other hand, the net negative charge of the surface layer, caused by the excess amount of I- with respect to TMA+, is compensated by a diffuse layer of adsorbed TMA+ cations, extending to or beyond the fourth molecular layer beneath the liquid surface.

Synthesis of Porous Activated Carbon Doped with Tetramethylammonium Hydroxide: Evaluation of Excellent Gasoline Vapor Adsorption Performance and Activation Mechanism.

Project description:The rapid urbanization and industrialization in China have led to an urgent dilemma for controlling urban air pollution, including the intensified emission of gasoline vapor into the atmosphere. Herein, we selected highland barley straw as a raw material and KOH and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) as activators to synthesize nitrogen-doped layered porous carbon (K-thAC) by a three-step activation method. The obtained K-thAC materials had a high specific surface area, reaching 3119 m2/g. Dynamic adsorption experiments demonstrated a superior adsorption capacity of up to 501 mg/g (K-thAC-25) for gasoline vapor compared with other documented carbon adsorbents. Moreover, adjusting the ratio of raw materials with a series of active ingredients could further improve the pore properties of the obtained K-thACs and their adsorption performance for gasoline vapor. Furthermore, the K-thAC materials were also characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), synchronous thermogravimetry (STA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption tests. This study synthesized a novel plant-based material to treat gasoline vapor pollution efficiently.

Transcription profiling of Arabidopsis roots from plants grown in nutrient solutions with various concentrations of nitrate and sucrose

Project description:We used Arabidopsis thaliana Col-0 for all experiments. The plants were grown hydroponically on nutrient solution as described previously [Plant J 1999, 18(5):509-519]. Briefly, plants were grown on sand, placed in custom-designed styrofoam rafts, in a growth chamber (EGC, Chagrin Falls, OH, USA) at 22°C with 60 mmol photons m-2s-1 light intensity and 8 h/16 h light/dark cycles. The seeds were initially germinated in tap water. After one week, the water was replaced with a complete nutrient solution [Plant J 1999, 18(5):509-519]. All the experiments were performed with 6 week old plants. Nutrient solutions were renewed weekly and on the day before the experiments. For treatments, individual rafts were transferred to containers with 300mL of nutrient solution supplemented with various concentrations of nitrate (as a mix of 2/1 KNO3/Ca(NO3)2) and/or sucrose. The N-free nutrient solutions contained 0.25 mM K2SO4 and 0.25 mM CaCl2 instead of KNO3 and Ca(NO3)2. Plants were transferred to treatments media at the beginning of the light period and were harvested 8h afterwards. Roots and leaves were harvested separately and quickly frozen in liquid N2.

Dataset of molecular dynamics simulation trajectories of amino-acid solutions with various force fields, water models and modified force field parameters.

Project description:We present molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories of water solutions of eight zwitterionic amino-acids (L- form) glycine (GLY), alanine (ALA), proline (PRO), threonine (THR), leucine (LEU), glutamine (GLN), histidine (HIS) and tyrosine (TYR) using various force field (OPLS-AA, Amber99ff-SB, GROMOS96 54a7, CHARMM19) and water model (SPC/E, TIP3P) combinations. Additionally, we present OPLS-AA molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories for alanine (ALA), leucine (LEU), glutamine (GLN), and tyrosine (TYR) varying the values of major force field parameters: charge on all amino acid atoms, bond length (all amino acid bonds), Lennard-Jones potential epsilon parameter and stiffness of bond angles. Our data enable to uncover sensitivity of molecular dynamics derived analysis to variation of force field and water models and force field parameters. This data set was used to understand the effect of molecular dynamics parameters on dielectric properties of amino acid solutions [1].

Effects of magnesium hydroxide morphology on Pb(ii) removal from aqueous solutions.

Project description:In this study, magnesium hydroxide (MH) particles with distinct morphologies were obtained through direct precipitation and subsequent hydrothermal treatment with various magnesium salts. The synthesized products were systematically characterized and utilized for the removal of Pb(ii) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption process of Pb(ii) by two different MH structures, namely flower globular magnesium hydroxide (FGMH) and hexagonal plate magnesium hydroxide (HPMH), adhered to the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. FGMH exhibited higher Pb(ii) removal capacity (2612 mg g-1) than HPMH (1431 mg g-1), attributable to the unique three-dimensional layered structures of FGMH that provide a larger surface area and abundant active sites. Additionally, metallic Pb was obtained by recycling the adsorbed Pb(ii) through acid dissolution-electrolysis. Furthermore, Pb(ii) removal mechanisms were investigated by analyzing adsorption kinetics and isotherms, and the adsorbed products were characterized. Based on the findings, the removal process occurs in two key stages. First, Pb(ii) ions bind with OH- ions on the surface upon diffusing to the MH surface, resulting in Pb(OH)2 deposits in situ. Concurrently, Mg(ii) ions diffuse into the solution, substituting Pb(ii) ions in the MH lattice. Second, the resultant Pb(OH)2, which is unstable, reacts with CO2 dissolved in water to yield Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2. Therefore, owing to its outstanding Pb(ii) adsorption performance and simple preparation method, FGMH is a promising solution for Pb(ii) pollution.

Scaling Down Large-Scale Thawing of Monoclonal Antibody Solutions: 3D Temperature Profiles, Changes in Concentration, and Density Gradients.

Project description:PurposeScale-down devices (SDD) are designed to simulate large-scale thawing of protein drug substance, but require only a fraction of the material. To evaluate the performance of a new SDD that aims to predict thawing in large-scale 2 L bottles, we characterised 3D temperature profiles and changes in concentration and density in comparison to 125 mL and 2 L bottles. Differences in diffusion between a monoclonal antibody (mAb) and histidine buffer after thawing were examined.MethodsTemperature profiles at six distinct positions were recorded with type T thermocouples. Size-exclusion chromatography allowed quantification of mAb and histidine. Polysorbate 80 was quantified using a fluorescent dye assay. In addition, the solution's density at different locations in bottles and the SDD was identified.ResultsThe temperature profiles in the SDD and the large-scale 2 L bottle during thawing were similar. Significant concentration gradients were detected in the 2 L bottle leading to marked density gradients. The SDD slightly overestimated the dilution in the top region and the maximum concentrations at the bottom. Fast diffusion resulted in rapid equilibration of histidine.ConclusionThe innovative SDD allows a realistic characterisation and helps to understand thawing processes of mAb solutions in large-scale 2 L bottles. Only a fraction of material is needed to gain insights into the thawing behaviour that is associated with several possible detrimental limitations.
