BdSLW-11: Dataset of Bangladeshi sign language words for recognizing 11 daily useful BdSL words.

ABSTRACT: The dataset of Bangladeshi sign language words (BdSLW) is rare. Though there are lots of datasets of BdSL sign alphabets, numbers, or characters, there are not enough datasets of sign words. This is the first dataset about sign words of BdSL according to the author(s) knowledge. So, this dataset is developed by collecting data from people. This is an image dataset. This dataset is a collection of 1105 images of sign words. A total of 11 sign word categories are selected which are important and daily use in our life. As this is an image dataset, so the images of sign words are taken by camera from the sign users of Bangladesh. Authors have gone to the individuals of sign users and captured images from them with their permission. Then the images are analyzed and segmented into the images which have quality such as no background, clear, bright, etc. This dataset is used for recognizing BdSL sign words.

MyWSL: Malaysian words sign language dataset.

Project description:Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals use sign language as a means of communication. However, those around them, especially family members like the children of deaf adults, may face communication challenges if they are unfamiliar with sign language. This issue has prompted numerous researchers to conduct studies on sign language translation and recognition. However, there is currently no publicly available dataset specifically for Malaysian sign language. This article introduces an image dataset of the Malaysian Sign Language (MySL) hand gestures used in everyday situations. The dataset, named MyWSL2023, comprises 3,500 images of ten static Malaysian sign language words collected from five participants (two males and three females) aged between 20 and 21 years old. The data collection took place indoors under normal lighting conditions. The MyWSL2023 dataset, which has been made freely accessible to all researchers, serves as a valuable resource for not only investigating and developing automated systems for hearing-impaired and deaf individuals but also gesture and sign language recognition using vision-based methods. Hand gestures for emergency situations: A video dataset based on words from Indian sign language.

Project description:Automatic sign language recognition provides better services to the deaf as it avoids the existing communication gap between them and the rest of the society. Hand gestures, the primary mode of sign language communication, plays a key role in improving sign language recognition. This article presents a video dataset of the hand gestures of Indian sign language (ISL) words used in emergency situations. The videos of eight ISL words have been collected from 26 individuals (including 12 males and 14 females) in the age group of 22 to 26 years with two samples from each individual in an indoor environment with normal lighting conditions. Such a video dataset is highly needed for automatic recognition of emergency situations from the sign language for the benefit of the deaf. The dataset is useful for the researchers working on vision based sign language recognition (SLR) as well as hand gesture recognition (HGR). Moreover, support vector machine based classification and deep learning based classification of the emergency gestures has been carried out and the base classification performance shows that the database can be used as a benchmarking dataset for developing novel and improved techniques for recognizing the hand gestures of emergency words in Indian sign language.

Dataset of Karakalpak language stop words.

Project description:The dataset presented in this paper aims to address the challenge of automatic extraction of stop words in Natural Language Processing (NLP) for the low-resource Karakalpak language spoken by approximately two million people in Uzbekistan. To accomplish this, we have created a corpus of 23 Karakalpak language school textbooks, which we have named the Karakalpak Language School Corpus (KAASC). Using the KAASC corpus, we have constructed lists of stop words using three methods based on Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF): unigram, bigram, and collocation methods, respectively. The resulting lists of stop words, along with a list of URLs used to construct the corpus, make up the described dataset in this paper.

ArASL: Arabic Alphabets Sign Language Dataset.

Project description:A fully-labelled dataset of Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) images is developed for research related to sign language recognition. The dataset will provide researcher the opportunity to investigate and develop automated systems for the deaf and hard of hearing people using machine learning, computer vision and deep learning algorithms. The contribution is a large fully-labelled dataset for Arabic Sign Language (ArSL) which is made publically available and free for all researchers. The dataset which is named ArSL2018 consists of 54,049 images for the 32 Arabic sign language sign and alphabets collected from 40 participants in different age groups. Different dimensions and different variations were present in images which can be cleared using pre-processing techniques to remove noise, center the image, etc. The dataset is made available publicly at https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/y7pckrw6z2/1.

Sign Language Dataset for Automatic Motion Generation.

Project description:Several sign language datasets are available in the literature. Most of them are designed for sign language recognition and translation. This paper presents a new sign language dataset for automatic motion generation. This dataset includes phonemes for each sign (specified in HamNoSys, a transcription system developed at the University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany) and the corresponding motion information. The motion information includes sign videos and the sequence of extracted landmarks associated with relevant points of the skeleton (including face, arms, hands, and fingers). The dataset includes signs from three different subjects in three different positions, performing 754 signs including the entire alphabet, numbers from 0 to 100, numbers for hour specification, months, and weekdays, and the most frequent signs used in Spanish Sign Language (LSE). In total, there are 6786 videos and their corresponding phonemes (HamNoSys annotations). From each video, a sequence of landmarks was extracted using MediaPipe. The dataset allows training an automatic system for motion generation from sign language phonemes. This paper also presents preliminary results in motion generation from sign phonemes obtaining a Dynamic Time Warping distance per frame of 0.37.

The "handedness" of language: Directional symmetry breaking of sign usage in words.

Project description:Language, which allows complex ideas to be communicated through symbolic sequences, is a characteristic feature of our species and manifested in a multitude of forms. Using large written corpora for many different languages and scripts, we show that the occurrence probability distributions of signs at the left and right ends of words have a distinct heterogeneous nature. Characterizing this asymmetry using quantitative inequality measures, viz. information entropy and the Gini index, we show that the beginning of a word is less restrictive in sign usage than the end. This property is not simply attributable to the use of common affixes as it is seen even when only word roots are considered. We use the existence of this asymmetry to infer the direction of writing in undeciphered inscriptions that agrees with the archaeological evidence. Unlike traditional investigations of phonotactic constraints which focus on language-specific patterns, our study reveals a property valid across languages and writing systems. As both language and writing are unique aspects of our species, this universal signature may reflect an innate feature of the human cognitive phenomenon.

BDSL 49: A comprehensive dataset of Bangla sign language.

Project description:Language is a method by which individuals express their thoughts. Each language has its own alphabet and numbers. Oral and written communication are both effective means of human interaction. However, each language has a sign language equivalent. Hearing-impaired and/or nonverbal individuals communicate through sign language. BDSL is the abbreviation for the Bangla sign language. The dataset contains images of hand signs in Bangla. The collection comprises 49 individual sign language images of the Bengali alphabet. BDSL49 is a set of 29,490 images with 49 labels. During data collection, images of fourteen distinct adults, each with a unique appearance and context, were captured. During data preparation, numerous strategies have been utilized to reduce noise. This dataset is available for free to researchers. Using techniques such as machine learning, computer vision, and deep learning, they are able to develop automated systems. Moreover, two models were applied to this dataset. The first is for detection, and the second is for identification.

Low resolution thermal imaging dataset of sign language digits.

Project description:The dataset contains low resolution thermal images corresponding to various sign language digits represented by hand and captured using the Omron D6T thermal camera. The resolution of the camera is 32×32 pixels. Because of the low resolution of the images captured by this camera, machine learning models for detecting and classifying sign language digits face additional challenges. Furthermore, the sensor's position and quality have a significant impact on the quality of the captured images. In addition, it is affected by external factors such as the temperature of the surface in comparison to the temperature of the hand. The dataset consists of 3200 images corresponding to ten sign digits, 0-9. Thus, each sign language digit consists of 320 images collected from different persons. The hand is oriented in various ways to capture all of the variations in the dataset.

FluentSigners-50: A signer independent benchmark dataset for sign language processing.

Project description:This paper presents a new large-scale signer independent dataset for Kazakh-Russian Sign Language (KRSL) for the purposes of Sign Language Processing. We envision it to serve as a new benchmark dataset for performance evaluations of Continuous Sign Language Recognition (CSLR) and Translation (CSLT) tasks. The proposed FluentSigners-50 dataset consists of 173 sentences performed by 50 KRSL signers resulting in 43,250 video samples. Dataset contributors recorded videos in real-life settings on a wide variety of backgrounds using various devices such as smartphones and web cameras. Therefore, distance to the camera, camera angles and aspect ratio, video quality, and frame rates varied for each dataset contributor. Additionally, the proposed dataset contains a high degree of linguistic and inter-signer variability and thus is a better training set for recognizing a real-life sign language. FluentSigners-50 baseline is established using two state-of-the-art methods, Stochastic CSLR and TSPNet. To this end, we carefully prepared three benchmark train-test splits for models' evaluations in terms of: signer independence, age independence, and unseen sentences.
