Prospective DNA Methylation Analysis of the CpG GABRA2 Receptor Subunit in Alcohol Dependence during Detoxification.

ABSTRACT: Background and Objectives: Variants of GABRA2 have been repeatedly associated with alcohol dependence risk. However, no study investigated potential epigenetic alterations in the GABRA2 gene in alcohol-dependent (AD) subjects during alcohol withdrawal. We investigated DNA methylation pattern in the regulatory region of GABRA2 gene in peripheral leukocytes of AD patients and controls. Further, GABRA2 methylation patterns were analysed in neuroblastoma cells under ethanol exposure and withdrawal. Materials and Methods: In the present study, blood samples were obtained from 41 AD subjects on the day of inpatient admission, after the first and second week of inpatient treatment.
