Project description:Short alkyl chain Heck (type) reactions, especially methyl Heck reactions, are a difficult aspect of the alkyl Heck reaction. To provide a solution to this problem, iron-catalyzed methyl, ethyl and propyl Heck reactions were developed using readily available alkyl peroxides as alkyl sources. The reaction conditions were mild, clean, and easy to handle. No additive was needed, and no hazardous waste was generated. The products were obtained in up to 99% yield of one isomer for most situations. This reaction works for many types of olefin and tolerates a variety of functional groups. Several late-stage functionalizations of natural products and drug molecules were conducted to demonstrate the synthetic applications of this reaction.

Project description:The first ruthenium-catalyzed umpolung carboxylation of hydrazones with CO2 to generate important aryl acetic acids is reported. Besides aldehyde hydrazones, a variety of ketone hydrazones, which have not been successfully applied in previous umpolung reactions with other reactive electrophiles, also show high reactivity and selectivity under mild conditions. Moreover, this operationally simple protocol features good functional group tolerance, is readily scalable, and offers easy derivation of important structures, including bioactive felbinac and adiphenine. Computational studies reveal that this umpolung reaction proceeds through the generation of a Ru-nitrenoid followed by concerted [4 + 2] cycloaddition with CO2.

Project description:A copper-catalyzed mono-selective C-H amination of ferrocenes assisted by 8-aminoquinoline is presented here. A range of amines, including bioactive molecules, were successfully installed to the ortho-position of ferrocene amides with high efficiency under mild conditions. A range of functionalized ferrocenes were compatible to give the aminated products in moderate to good yields. The gram-scale reaction was smoothly conducted and the directing group could be removed easily under basic conditions.

Project description:Non-aqueous Li-O2 batteries are promising for next-generation energy storage. New battery chemistries based on LiOH, rather than Li2 O2 , have been recently reported in systems with added water, one using a soluble additive LiI and the other using solid Ru catalysts. Here, the focus is on the mechanism of Ru-catalyzed LiOH chemistry. Using nuclear magnetic resonance, operando electrochemical pressure measurements, and mass spectrometry, it is shown that on discharging LiOH forms via a 4 e- oxygen reduction reaction, the H in LiOH coming solely from added H2 O and the O from both O2 and H2 O. On charging, quantitative LiOH oxidation occurs at 3.1 V, with O being trapped in a form of dimethyl sulfone in the electrolyte. Compared to Li2 O2 , LiOH formation over Ru incurs few side reactions, a critical advantage for developing a long-lived battery. An optimized metal-catalyst-electrolyte couple needs to be sought that aids LiOH oxidation and is stable towards attack by hydroxyl radicals.

Project description:A simple method for the preparation of aryl methyl ketones is reported. The transformation involves the Pd-catalyzed coupling of an acyl anion equivalent, acetyltrimethylsilane, with aryl bromides to afford the corresponding acetylated arenes in synthetically useful yields. The methodology is tolerant of heterocycles and provides a new method for arene functionalization.

Project description:A novel, easily removable and modifiable silicon-tethered pyridyldiisopropylsilyl directing group for C-H functionalizations of arenes has been developed. The installation of the pyridyldiisopropylsilyl group can efficiently be achieved via two complementary routes using easily available 2-(diisopropylsilyl)pyridine (5). The first strategy features a nucleophilic hydride substitution at the silicon atom in 5 with aryllithium reagents generated in situ from the corresponding aryl bromides or iodides. The second milder route exploits a highly efficient room-temperature rhodium(I)-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction between 5 and aryl iodides. The latter approach can be applied to the preparation of a wide range of pyridyldiisopropylsilyl-substituted arenes possessing a variety of functional groups, including those incompatible with organometallic reagents. The pyridyldiisopropylsilyl directing group allows for a highly efficient, regioselective palladium(II)-catalyzed mono-ortho-acyloxylation and ortho-halogenation of various aromatic compounds. Most impor-tantly, the silicon-tethered directing group in both acyloxylated and halogenated products can easily be removed or efficiently converted into an array of other valuable functionalities. These transformations include protio-, deuterio-, halo-, boro-, and alkynyldesilylations, as well as a conversion of the directing group into the hydroxy functionality. In addition, the construction of aryl-aryl bonds via the Hiyama-Denmark cross-coupling reaction is feasible for the acetoxylated products. Moreover, the ortho-halogenated pyridyldiisopropylsilylarenes, bearing both nucleophilic pyridyldiisopropylsilyl and electrophilic aryl halide moieties, represent synthetically attractive 1,2-ambiphiles. A unique reactivity of these ambiphiles has been demonstrated in efficient syntheses of arylenediyne and benzosilole derivatives, as well as in a facile generation of benzyne. In addition, preliminary mechanistic studies of the acyloxylation and halogenation reactions have been performed. A trinuclear palladacycle intermediate has been isolated from a stoichiometric reaction between diisopropyl-(phenyl)pyrid-2-ylsilane (3a) and palladium acetate. Furthermore, both C-H functionalization reactions exhibited equally high values of the intramolecular primary kinetic isotope effect (kH/kD = 6.7). Based on these observations, a general mechanism involving the formation of a palladacycle via a C-H activation process as the rate-determining step has been proposed.

Project description:Both CO and N2O are important, environmentally harmful industrial gases. The reaction of CO and N2O to produce CO2 and N2 has stimulated much research interest aimed at degradation of these two gases in a single step. Herein, we report an efficient CO oxidation by N2O catalyzed by a (PNN)Ru-H pincer complex under mild conditions, even with no added base. The reaction is proposed to proceed through a sequence of O-atom transfer (OAT) from N2O to the Ru-H bond to form a Ru-OH intermediate, followed by intramolecular OH attack on an adjacent CO ligand, forming CO2 and N2. Thus, the Ru-H bond of the catalyst plays a central role in facilitating the OAT from N2O to CO, providing an efficient and novel protocol for CO oxidation.

Project description:Photo-release of triphenylphosphine from a sulfonamide azobenzene ruthenium-arene complex was exploited to activate PdII Cl2 into Pd0 catalyst, for the photo-initiation of Sonogashira cross-coupling. The transformation was initiated on demand - by using simple white LED strip lights - with a high temporal response and the ability to control reaction rate by changing the irradiation time. Various substrates were successfully applied to this photo-initiated cross-coupling, thus illustrating the wide functional-group tolerance of our photo-caged catalyst activator, without any need for sophisticated photochemistry apparatus.

Project description:Selective defluorinative functionalization of trifluoromethyl group (-CF3) is an attractive synthetic route to the pharmaceutically privileged fluorine-containing moiety. Herein, we report a strategy based on photoexcited copper catalysis to activate the C-F bond of di- or trifluoromethylated arenes for divergent radical C-N coupling with carbazoles and aromatic amines. The use of different ligands can tune the reaction products diversity. A range of substituted, structurally diverse α,α-difluoromethylamines can be obtained from trifluoromethylated arenes via defluorinative C-N coupling with carbazoles, while an interesting double defluorinative C-N coupling is ready for difluoromethylated arenes. Based on this success, a carbazole-centered PNP ligand is designed to be an optimal ligand, enabling a copper-catalyzed C-N coupling for the construction of imidoyl fluorides from aromatic amines through double C-F bond functionalization. Interestingly, a 1,2-difluoroalkylamination strategy of styrenes is also developed, delivering γ,γ-difluoroalkylamines, a bioisostere to β-aminoketones, in synthetically useful yields. The DFT studies reveal an inner-sphere electron transfer mechanism for Cu-catalyzed selective activation of C(sp3)-F bonds.
