Project description:Radical anions appear as intermediates in a variety of organic reductions and have recently garnered interest for their role as mediators for electron-driven catalysis as well as for organic electron conductor materials. Due to their unstable nature, the isolation of such organic radical anions is usually only possible by using extended aromatic systems, whereas non-aromatic unsaturated hydrocarbons have so far only been observed in situ. We herein report the first isolation, structure and spectroscopic characterization of a simple aryl substituted alkene radical anion, namely that of stilbene (1,2-diphenyl ethylene), achieved by encapsulation between two [K{18c6}] cations. The formation of the radical anion is accompanied by Z → E isomerization of the involved double bond, also on a catalytic scale. Employing the linear iron(i) complex [Fe(NR2)2]- as a reductant and coordination site also allows for this transformation, via formation of an iron(ii) bound radical anion. The use of the iron complex now also allows for Z → E isomerization of electron richer, simple alkenes bearing either mixed alkyl/aryl or even bis(alkyl) substitution.

Project description:A nickel-catalyzed reductive carboxylation of styrenes using CO2 has been developed. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions using diethylzinc as the reductant. Preliminary data suggests the mechanism involves two discrete nickel-mediated catalytic cycles, the first involving a catalyzed hydrozincation of the alkene followed by a second, slower nickel-catalyzed carboxylation of the in situ formed organozinc reagent. Importantly, the catalyst system is very robust and will fixate CO2 in good yield even if exposed to only an equimolar amount introduced into the headspace above the reaction.

Project description:The translation of batch chemistries onto continuous flow platforms requires addressing the issues of consistent fluidic behaviour, channel fouling and high-throughput processing. Droplet microfluidic technologies reduce channel fouling and provide an improved level of control over heat and mass transfer to control reaction kinetics. However, in conventional geometries, the droplet size is sensitive to changes in flow rates. Here we report a three-dimensional droplet generating device that exhibits flow invariant behaviour and is robust to fluctuations in flow rate. In addition, the droplet generator is capable of producing droplet volumes spanning four orders of magnitude. We apply this device in a parallel network to synthesize platinum nanoparticles using an ionic liquid solvent, demonstrate reproducible synthesis after recycling the ionic liquid, and double the reaction yield compared with an analogous batch synthesis.

Project description:A nickel-catalyzed reductive dimerization of bromocyclobutenes to produce unusual and unprecedented cyclobutene dimers was developed. In a stereoconvergent procedure, various bromocyclobutenes were readily dimerized in good yields, with good diastereoselectivities and broad functional group tolerance. Notably, the presence of a carbonyl group in the starting material appears to dictate diastereoselectivity.

Project description:Fluorinated polymers are important materials in everyday life; however, most monomers of widely used fluoropolymers are gaseous, and their polymerization is difficult in an ordinary laboratory. Therefore, partially fluorinated polymers have recently been reported. As an easy-to-handle fluorine-containing monomer, α-trifluoromethylstyrene (TFMST) can be used to produce partially fluorinated polymers with trifluoromethyl groups in the main chain; however, TFMST does not homopolymerize, and there are limited reports on its copolymerization with styrene (ST). In this study, we applied the controlled radical polymerization method, which is effective for the polymerization of ST, to the copolymerization of TFMST and ST. We also showed that nitroxide-mediated polymerization is effective. The content ratio of TFMST in the TFMST-ST copolymer can be controlled between 10% and 40% by changing its monomer ratio. Additionally, the polymerization of TFMST and ST with substituents was performed to increase structural variations. The thermal stability as well as water and oil repellency of the synthesized polymers with different composition ratios and substituents were also evaluated.

Project description:We report the use of simple 1,4-dihydropyridine anions as a general platform for promoting single-electron photoreductions. In the presence of a mild base, 1,4-dihydropyridines were shown to effectively promote the hydrodechlorination and borylation of aryl chlorides and the photodetosylation of N-tosyl aromatic amines under visible light irradiation. Our studies also demonstrate that the C4 substituent can influence the reactivity of these anions, reducing unwanted side reactions like hydrogen atom transfer and back-electron transfer.

The interactions of retinol and retinoic acid with two electron acceptors, 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (chloranil), were studied in an investigation on the ability of vitamin A to behave as a donor of electrons. 2. Retinol reacts with TCNQ in polar organic solvents with the formation, as judged by spectral studies, of the radical anion of TCNQ. 3. Addition of the products of this reaction to water is accompanied by a rapid consumption of OH(-) ions. 4. Consumption of OH(-) ions is also a feature of the reactions between retinol and chloranil, but the spectrum of the radical anion of chloranil is observed only when retinol and chloranil are suspended in aqueous salt solutions. 5. Retinoic acid behaves similarly to retinol in its reactions with TCNQ and chloranil, but it appears to be a weaker electron donor than retinol. 6. The reaction products that may be formed from retinol in its reactions with TCNQ and chloranil are discussed. 7. It is suggested that the ability of vitamin A to behave as a donor of electrons may be an important aspect of its biochemical mode of action.

Project description:The reactions of radicals with human serum albumin (HSA) under reductive stress conditions were studied using pulse radiolysis and photochemical methods. It was proved that irradiation of HSA solutions under reductive stress conditions results in the formation of stable protein aggregates. HSA aggregates induced by ionizing radiation are characterized by unique emission, different from the UV emission of non-irradiated solutions. The comparison of transient absorption spectra and the reactivity of hydrated electrons (eaq-) with amino acids or HSA suggests that electron attachment to disulfide bonds is responsible for the transient spectrum recorded in the case of albumin solutions. The reactions of eaq- and CO2•- with HSA lead to the formation of the same products. Recombination of sulfur-centered radicals plays a crucial role in the generation of HSA nanoparticles, which are stabilized by intermolecular disulfide bonds. The process of creating disulfide bridges under the influence of ionizing radiation is a promising method for the synthesis of biocompatible protein nanostructures for medical applications. Our Raman spectroscopy studies indicate strong modification of disulfide bonds and confirm the aggregation of albumins as well. Low-temperature measurements indicate the possibility of electron tunneling through the HSA protein structure to specific CyS-SCy bridges. The current study showed that the efficiency of HSA aggregation depends on two main factors: dose rate (number of pulses per unit time in the case of pulse radiolysis) and the temperature of the irradiated solution.

Project description:A continuous flow cascade of multi-step catalytic reactions is a cutting-edge concept to revolutionize stepwise catalytic synthesis yet is still challenging in practical applications. Herein, a method for practical one-pot cascade catalysis is developed by combining Pickering emulsions with continuous flow. Our method involves co-localization of different catalytically active sub-compartments within droplets of a Pickering emulsion yielding cell-like microreactors, which can be packed in a column reactor for continuous flow cascade catalysis. As exemplified by two chemo-enzymatic cascade reactions for the synthesis of chiral cyanohydrins and chiral ester, 5 - 420 fold enhancement in the catalysis efficiency and as high as 99% enantioselectivity were obtained even over a period of 80 - 240 h. The compartmentalization effect and enriching-reactant properties arising from the biomimetic microreactor are theoretically and experimentally identified as the key factors for boosting the catalysis efficiency and for regulating the kinetics of cascade catalysis.

Project description:An isostructural series of heavy Group 14 E(I) radical anions (Ge, Sn, Pb), stabilized by a bulky xanthene-based diamido ligand are reported. The radical anions were synthesised by the one-electron reduction of their corresponding E(II) precursor complexes with sodium naphthalenide in THF, yielding the radical anions as charge-separated sodium salts. The series of main group radicals have been comprehensively characterized by EPR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and DFT analysis, which reveal that in all cases, the spin density of the unpaired electron almost exclusively resides in a p-orbital of π symmetry located on the Group 14 center.
