The modification of DNA bases is a classic hallmark of epigenetics. Four forms of modified cytosine-5-methylcytosine, 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, 5-formylcytosine, and 5-carboxylcytosine-have been discovered in eukaryotic DNA.
