A Dataset with Multibeam Forward-Looking Sonar for Underwater Object Detection.

ABSTRACT: Multibeam forward-looking sonar (MFLS) plays an important role in underwater detection. There are several challenges to the research on underwater object detection with MFLS. Firstly, the research is lack of available dataset. Secondly, the sonar image, generally processed at pixel level and transformed to sector representation for the visual habits of human beings, is disadvantageous to the research in artificial intelligence (AI) areas. Towards these challenges, we present a novel dataset, the underwater acoustic target detection (UATD) dataset, consisting of over 9000 MFLS images captured using Tritech Gemini 1200ik sonar. Our dataset provides raw data of sonar images with annotation of 10 categories of target objects (cube, cylinder, tyres, etc). The data was collected from lake and shallow water. To verify the practicality of UATD, we apply the dataset to the state-of-the-art detectors and provide corresponding benchmarks for its accuracy and efficiency.

Project description:Unmanned vehicles have become increasingly popular in the underwater domain in the last decade, as they provide better operation reliability by minimizing human involvement in most tasks. Perception of the environment is crucial for safety and other tasks, such as guidance and trajectory control, mainly when operating underwater. Mine detection is one of the riskiest operations since it involves systems that can easily damage vehicles and endanger human lives if manned. Automating mine detection from side-scan sonar images enhances safety while reducing false negatives. The collected dataset contains 1170 real sonar images taken between 2010 and 2021 using a Teledyne Marine Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), which includes enough information to classify its content objects as NOn-Mine-like BOttom Objects (NOMBO) and MIne-Like COntacts (MILCO). The dataset is annotated and can be quickly deployed for object detection, classification, or image segmentation tasks. Collecting a dataset of this type requires a significant amount of time and cost, which increases its rarity and relevance to research and industrial development.

A novel underwater dam crack detection and classification approach based on sonar images.

Project description:Underwater dam crack detection and classification based on sonar images is a challenging task because underwater environments are complex and because cracks are quite random and diverse in nature. Furthermore, obtainable sonar images are of low resolution. To address these problems, a novel underwater dam crack detection and classification approach based on sonar imagery is proposed. First, the sonar images are divided into image blocks. Second, a clustering analysis of a 3-D feature space is used to obtain the crack fragments. Third, the crack fragments are connected using an improved tensor voting method. Fourth, a minimum spanning tree is used to obtain the crack curve. Finally, an improved evidence theory combined with fuzzy rule reasoning is proposed to classify the cracks. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is able to detect underwater dam cracks and classify them accurately and effectively under complex underwater environments.

Looking back: forward looking.

Project description:GigaScience is now 5 years old, having been launched at the 2012 Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology conference. Anyone who has attended what is the largest computational biology conference since then has had the opportunity to join us for each birthday celebration-and receive 1 of our fun T-shirts as a party prize. Since launching, we have pushed our agenda of openness, transparency, reproducibility, and reusability. Here, we look back at our first 5 years and what we have done to forward our open science goals in scientific publishing. Our mainstay has been to create a process that allows the availability and publication of as many "research objects" as possible to create a more complete way of communicating how the research process is done.

Looking back on forward-looking COVID models.

Project description:Covid Act Now (CAN) developed an epidemiological model that takes various non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) into account and predicts viral spread and subsequent health outcomes. In this study, the projections of the model developed by CAN were back-tested against real-world data, and it was found that the model consistently overestimated hospitalizations and deaths by 25%-100% and 70%-170%, respectively, due in part to an underestimation of the efficacy of NPIs. Other COVID models were also back-tested against historical data, and it was found that all models generally captured the potential magnitude and directionality of the pandemic in the short term. There are limitations to epidemiological models, but understanding these limitations enables these models to be utilized as tools for data-driven decision-making in viral outbreaks. Further, it can be valuable to have multiple, independently developed models to mitigate the inaccuracies of or to correct for the incorrect assumptions made by a particular model.

Data augmentation using image translation for underwater sonar image segmentation.

Project description:In underwater environment, the study of object recognition is an important basis for implementing an underwater unmanned vessel. For this purpose, abundant experimental data to train deep learning model is required. However, it is very difficult to obtain these data because the underwater experiment itself is very limited in terms of preparation time and resources. In this study, the image transformation model, Pix2Pix is utilized to generate data similar to experimental one obtained by our ROV named SPARUS between the pool and reservoir. These generated data are applied to train the other deep learning model, FCN for a pixel segmentation of images. The original sonar image and its mask image have to be prepared for all training data to train the image segmentation model and it takes a lot of effort to do it what if all training data are supposed to be real sonar images. Fortunately, this burden can be released here, for the pairs of mask image and synthesized sonar image are already consisted in the image transformation step. The validity of the proposed procedures is verified from the performance of the image segmentation result. In this study, when only real sonar images are used for training, the mean accuracy is 0.7525 and the mean IoU is 0.7275. When the both synthetic and real data is used for training, the mean accuracy is 0.81 and the mean IoU is 0.7225. Comparing the results, the performance of mean accuracy increase to 6%, performance of the mean IoU is similar value.

The 1918 Influenza Pandemic: Looking Back, Looking Forward.

Project description:In commemoration of the centennial of the 1918 influenza pandemic, the American Journal of Epidemiology has convened a collection of 12 articles that further illuminate the epidemiology of that pandemic and consider whether we would be more prepared if an equally deadly influenza virus were to emerge again. In the present commentary, we place these 12 articles in the context of a growing body of work on the archeo-epidemiology of past pandemics, the socioeconomic and geographic drivers of influenza mortality and natality impact, and renewed interest in immune imprinting mechanisms and the development of novel influenza vaccines. We also highlight persisting mysteries in the origins and severity of the 1918 pandemic and the need to preserve rapidly decaying information that may provide treasure troves for future generations.

High-Resolution Underwater Mapping Using Side-Scan Sonar.

Project description:The goal of this study is to generate high-resolution sea floor maps using a Side-Scan Sonar(SSS). This is achieved by explicitly taking into account the SSS operation as follows. First, the raw sensor data is corrected by means of a physics-based SSS model. Second, the data is projected to the sea-floor. The errors involved in this projection are thoroughfully analysed. Third, a probabilistic SSS model is defined and used to estimate the probability of each sea-floor region to be observed. This probabilistic information is then used to weight the contribution of each SSS measurement to the map. Because of these models, arbitrary map resolutions can be achieved, even beyond the sensor resolution. Finally, a geometric map building method is presented and combined with the probabilistic approach. The resulting map is composed of two layers. The echo intensity layer holds the most likely echo intensities at each point in the sea-floor. The probabilistic layer contains information about how confident can the user or the higher control layers be about the echo intensity layer data. Experimental results have been conducted in a large subsea region.

Population Responses to Environmental Change: Looking Back, Looking Forward.

Project description:Over the past two decades, population researchers have engaged in a far-reaching and productive program of research on demographic responses to changes in the natural environment. This essay "looks back" to the origins of these developments, identifying pivotal agenda-setting moments in the 1990s and tracing the impact on contemporary research. The essay also "looks forward" to identify critical gaps and challenges that remain to be addressed and to set an agenda for future research on population responses to environmental change. It recommends that the multidimensionality of environmental contexts and change be fully embraced, long run as well as short term effects be investigated, variability in the effects of environmental change in relation to social institutions, policy implementation, and environmental context be examined, movement between contexts as well as change in situ as sources of environmental change be considered, and interconnections among demographic processes in response to environmental change be explored. Taking these steps will position demographers to contribute significantly to a larger and deeper understanding of environmental change and its consequences, locally, regionally, and globally.
