High-resolution circa-2020 map of urban lakes in China.

ABSTRACT: Urban lakes provide important ecological services to local communities, such as flood mitigation, biodiversity, and recreation. With rapid urbanization, urban lakes are significantly affected by socio-economic development and urgently need attention. Yet there is still a lack of datasets that include tiny urban lakes on a global or national scale. This study aims to produce a high-resolution circa-2020 map of urban lakes (≥0.001 km²) in China. The 10-m-resolution Sentinel-2 imagery and a simple but robust water extraction method was used to generate waterbodies. The accuracy of this national-scale dataset was evaluated by comparing it with manually sampled urban units, with the average accuracy of 81.85% in area and 93.35% in count. The database totally inventories 1.11 × 10⁶ urban lakes in China, with a net area of ~2.13 × 10³ km². Overall, the spatial distribution of urban lakes in China showed strongly heterogeneous characteristics. This dataset will enhance our understanding of the distribution pattern of China's urban lakes and contribute to better ecological and environmental management as well as sustainable urban development planning.

Project description:Urban lakes play a vital role in the sustainable development of urbanized areas. In this freshwater ecosystem, massive microbial communities can drive the recycling of nutrients and regulate the water quality. However, water bacterial and fungal communities in the urban lakes are not well understood. In the present work, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was combined with community level physiological profiles (CLPPs) and Illumina Miseq sequence techniques to determine the diversity and composition of the water bacterial and fungal community in three urban lakes, namely Xingqing lake (LX), Geming lake (LG) and Lianhu lake (LL), located in Xi'an City (Shaanxi Province, China). The results showed that these three lakes were eutrophic water bodies. The highest total nitrogen (TN) was observed in LL, with a value of 12.1 mg/L, which is 2 times higher than that of LG. The permanganate index (CODMn) concentrations were 21.6 mg/L, 35.4 mg/L and 28.8 mg/L in LG, LL and LX, respectively (p < 0.01). Based on the CLPPs test, the results demonstrated that water bacterial communities in the LL and LX urban lakes had higher carbon source utilization ability. A total of 62,742 and 55,346 high quality reads were grouped into 894 and 305 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) for bacterial and fungal communities, respectively. Water bacterial and fungal community was distributed across 14 and 6 phyla. The most common phyla were Proteobacteriaand Cyanobacteria. Cryptomycota was particularly dominant in LL, while Chytridiomycota and Entomophthormycota were the most abundant fungal phyla, accounting for 95% of the population in the LL and 56% in the LG. Heat map and redundancy analysis (RDA) highlighted the dramatic differences of water bacterial communities among three urban lakes. Meanwhile, the profiles of fungal communities were significantly correlated with the water quality parameters (e.g., CODMn and total nitrogen, TN). Several microbes (Legionella sp. and Streptococcus sp.) related to human diseases, such as infectious diseases, were also found. The results from this study provides useful information related to the water quality and microbial community compositions harbored in the aquatic ecosystems of urban lakes.

Project description:Urban lakes play an important role in drainage and water storage, regulating urban microclimate conditions, supplying groundwater, and meeting citizens' recreational needs. However, geographical patterns of algal communities associated with urban lakes from a large scale are still unclear. In the present work, the geographical variation of algal communities and water quality parameters in different urban lakes in China were determined. The water quality parameters were examined in the samples collected from north, central, south, and coastal economic zones in China. The results suggested that significant differences in water quality were observed among different geographical distribution of urban lakes. The highest total phosphorus (TP)(0.21 mg/L) and total nitrogen (TN) (3.84 mg/L) concentrations were found in XinHaiHu (XHH) lake, it also showed highest the nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) (0.39 mg/L),total organic carbon(TOC) (9.77 mg/L), and COD Mn (9.01 mg/L) concentrations among all samples. Environmental and geographic factors also cause large differences in algal cell concentration in different urban lakes, which ranged from 4,700×104 to 247,800 ×104cell/L. Through light microscopy, 6 phyla were identified, which includes Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta, and Cryptophyta. Meanwhile, the heat map with the total 63 algal community composition at the genus level profile different urban lakes community structures are clearly distinguishable. Further analyses showed that the dominant genera were Limnothrixsp., Synedra sp., Cyclotella sp., Nephrocytium sp., Melosirasp., and Scenedesmussp. among all samples. The integrated network analysis indicated that the highly connected taxa (hub) were Fragilariasp.,Scenedesmus sp., and Stephanodiscus sp. The water quality parameters of NO3--N and NH4+-N had significant impacts on the structural composition of the algal community. Additionally, RDA further revealed distinct algal communities in the different urban lakes, and were influenced by NO2--N, Fe, and algal cell concentrations. In summary, these results demonstrate that the pattern of algal communities are highly correlated with geographic location and water quality on a large scale, and these results also give us further understanding of the complex algal communities and effectively managing eutrophication of urban lakes.
