Influence of Self-Perceived Burden on Quality of Life in Patients with Urostomy Based on Structural Equation Model: The Mediating Effects of Resilience and Social Support.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

To investigate the current situation of self-perceived burden in patients with urostomy, analyze the correlation between self-perceived burden and quality of life, and explore the intermediary role of resilience and social support.

Methods

The convenience sampling method was used to select 303 patients with urostomy of outpatient departments of the three tertiary hospitals in Yinchuan, Ningxia region, China, from April 1, 2020, to October 1, 2020, who then completed a survey questionnaire. The survey questionnaire contained a general data questionnaire and self-perceived burden scale, city of hope-quality of life-ostomy questionnaire, Connor-Davidson resilience scale, and social support rating scale.

Results

Self-perceived burden was present among 89.8% patients with urostomy; the quality of life of patients with urostomy is low. The results showed that the self-perceived burden and quality of life, resilience, and social support are related in pairs; self-perceived burden was significantly negatively correlated with quality of life，resilience, and social support; there was a significant positive correlation between quality of life, resilience, and social support; resilience and social support were parallel mediators.

Conclusions

Patients with urostomy had a heavy self-perceived burden and low quality of life. Reducing the self-perceived burden of patients with urostomy by improving the level of resilience and social support, could raise the level of quality of life. This study could provide empirical basis for nurses to take continuous nursing intervention measures in order to reduce the self-perceived burden of patients with urostomy and ultimately to improve the quality of life.

Project description:IntroductionAs stroke patients may have impaired motor function, there may have increased sedentary behavior. Factors associated with sedentary behavior need to be explored to develop targeted interventions. Although studies explore the effects of exercise self-efficacy and perceived social support on sedentary behavior, the relationship is not clear. The aim of this study was to explore the mediating effect of exercise self-efficacy on perceived social support and objective measured sedentary behavior in stroke patients.MethodsThe random sampling method was adopted to select 275 stroke patients from the neurology department of a third-grade hospital of Henan Province from June 2023 to March 2024 in a cross-sectional descriptive study. A general data questionnaire, exercise self-efficacy scale, perceived social support scale, and ActiGraph GT3X accelerometer were used to investigate. The structural equation model was used to analyze the mediating effect of exercise self-efficacy between perceived social support and sedentary behavior.ResultsThe mean sedentary behavior time in stroke patients in this study was (479.65 ± 112.65) min, the mean score of perceived social support was (47.53 ± 17.16), and the mean score of exercise self-efficacy was (24.19 ± 6.25). The correlation analysis revealed that, the sedentary behavior of stroke patients was negatively correlated with exercise self-efficacy and perceived social support. The results of the mediation analysis showed that exercise self-efficacy played a partial mediating role between perceived social support and sedentary behavior.ConclusionPerceived social support and exercise self-efficacy were influential factors in sedentary behavior. Moreover, the impact of perceived social support on sedentary behavior was partially mediated by exercise self-efficacy. Therefore, to decrease the sedentary behavior, it is crucial to improve the level of perceived social support in stroke patients. Patients with less perceived social support can improve their exercise self-efficacy and thus perceive more social support.

Project description:ObjectiveMany young male cancer patients experience reproductive concerns. Self-disclosure might be able to improve patients' perceived social support and reproductive concerns. Nevertheless, these relationships have not yet been confirmed among young male cancer patients. This study aims to investigate the level of reproductive concerns and to identify the mediating role of perceived social support between self-disclosure and reproductive concerns among young male cancer patients in China by developing a structural model.MethodsThis study was a quantitative, cross-sectional design. We used the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement guidelines to report this study. A total of 369 young male cancer survivors were recruited by convenience sampling from two tertiary hospitals in Taiyuan, Shanxi, China. Data were collected using a "general data questionnaire", "distress disclosure index" (DDI), "perceived social support scale" (PSSS), and "reproductive concerns after cancer-male" (RCAC-M) via the WeChat mini program "Questionnaire Star" and paper questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analyses, and structural equation models were adopted to analyze the data.ResultsReproductive concerns were at moderate levels and negatively associated with self-disclosure (r = -0.619, P < 0.01) and perceived social support (r = -0.599, P < 0.01). Self-disclosure indirectly influenced reproductive concerns (-0.328∼-0.159, P < 0.001) through perceived social support.ConclusionsSelf-disclosure and perceived social support are closely associated with reproductive concerns in young male cancer patients, and perceived social support is a mediator between self-disclosure and reproductive concerns. Healthcare providers could reduce reproductive concerns by enhancing self-disclosure and improving perceived social support.Trial registrationThis study was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov on June 13, 2023 (NCT05914181).

Project description:BackgroundThe mental health of college students significantly impacts their life, academic performance, and even employment prospects. Research indicates that physical exercise can promote mental health, but the pathways of its influence require further exploration. This study investigates the relationship between physical exercise and psychological capital in college students, focusing on the mediating roles of perceived social support and self-control.ObjectivesThis study seeks to investigate the relationship between physical exercise and psychological capital among university students, with a further in-depth analysis of the mediating roles played by perceived social support and self-control within this dynamic.MethodsUsing cluster sampling, we surveyed 898 college students from five universities in Xinxiang, Henan Province, employing the Physical Activity Rating Scale (PARS-3), the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), the Revised Self-Control Scale (SCS), and the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ). Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and Amos 23.0, and common method bias was tested using Harman's single-factor test. The significance of the mediation effects was tested using the bootstrap sampling method.Results(1) Physical exercise is significantly correlated with psychological capital (r = 0.786, p < 0.01); (2) Perceived social support and self-control mediate the relationship between physical exercise and psychological capital; (3) The mediation effect consists of two indirect effects: physical exercise → perceived social support → psychological capital (β = 0.404, 95% CI: 0.336-0.473) and physical exercise → self-control → psychological capital (β = 0.158, 95% CI: 0.067-0.242).ConclusionPhysical exercise can directly enhance the psychological capital of college students and can indirectly influence psychological capital through perceived social support or self-control. The mediating effect of perceived social support is stronger than that of self-control.

Project description:BackgroundAdolescents in less economically developed areas are susceptible to social anxiety, so finding ways to effectively prevent and intervene in social anxiety could be a major step forward for poverty alleviation. However, little is known about the inner workings of social anxiety in this group. Exploring the risk and protective factors of social anxiety among adolescents in less developed rural areas is crucial for maintaining their mental health and improving their social adaptability. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships among perceived social support, core self-evaluation, shyness and social anxiety among rural secondary school students and analyze the risk and protective factors of social anxiety.MethodsA total of 626 rural secondary school students are investigated with the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), Core Self-Evaluation Scale (CSES), Shyness Scale (SS) and Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SADS). Structural equation modeling is used to analyze the mediating effects of core self-evaluation and shyness.ResultsThe results reveal that (1) the perceived social support and core self-evaluation of rural secondary school students are significantly negatively correlated with social anxiety, whereas their shyness is significantly positively correlated with social anxiety. There are significant gender differences in perceived social support, core self-evaluation, shyness and social anxiety. (2) There is a significant chain mediating effect of core self-evaluation and shyness between perceived social support and social anxiety, and the mediation model is cross-gender consistent.ConclusionsThese results confirm that perceived social support and core self-evaluation are protective factors against social anxiety in rural secondary school students and that shyness is a risk factor for social anxiety. Moreover, perceived social support can indirectly affect social anxiety through core self-evaluation and shyness. Prevention and intervention of social anxiety can be carried out in three ways: improving the perceived ability of social support, enhancing positive self-evaluation, and reducing shyness and avoidance behaviors.
