Women engagement in agriculture and human capital development in developing countries: An African sub-regional analysis.

ABSTRACT: Considering the relevant role played by women in agriculture in Africa, this study sets out to examine how women's engagement in agriculture contributes to human capital development in selected African countries. The study engagedpanel data of selected 33 African countries spanning the period of 2000 to 2019. The study applied the Pooled Ordinary Least Squares (POLS) and the fixed effects based on the Hausman specification. Findings show that engagement of women in agriculture, though significant, but negatively related to human capital development in Africa. The implication of this is that an increase in women's engagement in agriculture without the required level of education and training and access to agricultural resources may have a negative impact on human capital development. Therefore, the study recommended that it is necessary to train women in terms of agricultural skills needed to improve human capital development in Africa.

Project description:BackgroundIntegrated knowledge translation (IKT) through strategic, continuous engagement with decision-makers represents an approach to bridge research, policy and practice. The Collaboration for Evidence-based Healthcare and Public Health in Africa (CEBHA +), comprising research institutions in Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda and Germany, developed and implemented tailored IKT strategies as part of its multifaceted research on prevention and care of non-communicable diseases and road traffic injuries. The objective of this article is to describe the CEBHA + IKT approach and report on the development, implementation and monitoring of site-specific IKT strategies.MethodsWe draw on findings derived from the mixed method IKT evaluation (conducted in 2020-2021), and undertook document analyses and a reflective survey among IKT implementers. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively and qualitative data were analysed using content analysis. The authors used the TIDieR checklist to report results in a structured manner.ResultsPreliminary IKT evaluation data (33 interviews with researchers and stakeholders from policy and practice, and 31 survey responses), 49 documents, and eight responses to the reflective survey informed this article. In each of the five African CEBHA + countries, a site-specific IKT strategy guided IKT implementation, tailored to the respective national context, engagement aims, research tasks, and individuals involved. IKT implementers undertook a variety of IKT activities at varying levels of engagement that targeted a broad range of decision-makers and other stakeholders, particularly during project planning, data interpretation, and output dissemination. Throughout the project, the IKT teams continued to tailor IKT strategies informally and modified the IKT approach by responding to ad hoc engagements and involving non-governmental organisations, universities, and communities. Challenges to using systematic, formalised IKT strategies arose in particular with respect to the demand on time and resources, leading to the modification of monitoring processes.ConclusionTailoring of the CEBHA + IKT approach led to the inclusion of some atypical IKT partners and to greater responsiveness to unexpected opportunities for decision-maker engagement. Benefits of using systematic IKT strategies included clarity on engagement aims, balancing of existing and new strategic partnerships, and an enhanced understanding of research context, including site-specific structures for evidence-informed decision-making.

Project description:BackgroundDespite the high prevalence of diabetes in Africa, the extent of undiagnosed diabetes in the region is still poorly understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis was designed to determine the pooled prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus among adults in Africa.MethodsWe conducted a systematic desk review and electronic web-based search of PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, and the World Health Organization's Hinari portal (which includes the SCOPUS, African Index Medicus, and African Journals Online databases), identifying peer-reviewed research studies on the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes among adult individuals using pre-defined quality and inclusion criteria. We ran our search from June 1, 2018 to Jun 14, 2020. We extracted relevant data and presented descriptive summaries of the studies in tabular form. The I2 test was used to assess heterogeneity across studies. A random effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus at a 95% confidence interval (CI). Funnel plot asymmetry and Egger's tests were used to check for publication bias. The final effect size was determined by applying a trim and fill analysis in a random-effects model.ResultsOur search identified 1442 studies amongst which 23 articles were eligible for inclusion in the final meta-analysis. The average pooled prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus among adults was 3.85 (95% CI: 3.10-4.60). The pooled prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus based on geographic location was 4.43 (95% CI: 3.12-5.74) in Eastern Africa; 4.72 (95% CI: 2.64-6.80) in Western Africa; 4.27 (95% CI: 1.77-6.76) in Northern Africa and 1.46 (95%CI: 0.57-2.34) in southern Africa respectively.ConclusionOur findings indicate a high prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes in Africa and suggest that it may be more prevalent in Western Africa than the rest of the regions. Given the high levels of undiagnosed diabetes in the Africa region, more attention should be paid to incorporating diabetes screening and treatment services into existing diabetes related programs to reduce the prevalence of undiagnosed cases.

Project description:BackgroundIt is estimated that more than two-thirds of the population in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) must leave their home to collect water, putting them at risk for a variety of negative health outcomes. There is little research, however, quantifying who is most affected by long water collection times.ObjectivesThis study aims to a) describe gender differences in water collection labor among both adults and children (< 15 years of age) in the households (HHs) that report spending more than 30 minutes collecting water, disaggregated by urban and rural residence; and b) estimate the absolute number of adults and children affected by water collection times greater than 30 minutes in 24 SSA countries.MethodsWe analyzed data from the Demographic Health Survey (DHS) and the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) (2005-2012) to describe water collection labor in 24 SSA countries.ResultsAmong households spending more than 30 minutes collecting water, adult females were the primary collectors of water across all 24 countries, ranging from 46% in Liberia (17,412 HHs) to 90% in Cote d'Ivoire (224,808 HHs). Across all countries, female children were more likely to be responsible for water collection than male children (62% vs. 38%, respectively). Six countries had more than 100,000 households (HHs) where children were reported to be responsible for water collection (greater than 30 minutes): Burundi (181,702 HHs), Cameroon (154,453 HHs), Ethiopia (1,321,424 HHs), Mozambique (129,544 HHs), Niger (171,305 HHs), and Nigeria (1,045,647 HHs).ConclusionIn the 24 SSA countries studied, an estimated 3.36 million children and 13.54 million adult females were responsible for water collection in households with collection times greater than 30 minutes. We suggest that accessibility to water, water collection by children, and gender ratios for water collection, especially when collection times are great, should be considered as key indicators for measuring progress in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector.

Project description:BackgroundAfrican populations are characterised by diversity at many levels including: demographic history, genetic ancestry, language, wealth, socio-political landscape, culture and behaviour. Several of these have a profound impact on body fat mass. Obesity, a key risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, in the wake of the epidemiological and health transitions across the continent, requires detailed analysis together with other major risk factors.ObjectiveTo compare regional and sex-specific body mass index (BMI) distributions, using a cross-sectional study design, in adults aged 40-60 years across six study sites in four sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries and to compare the determinants of BMI at each.MethodsAnthropometric measurements were standardised across sites and BMI calculated. Median BMI and prevalence of underweight, lean, overweight and obesity were compared between the sexes and across sites. Data from multivariable linear regression models for the principal determinants of BMI were summarised from the site-specific studies.ResultsBMI was calculated in 10,702 participants (55% female) and was significantly higher in women than men at nearly all sites. The highest prevalence of obesity was observed at the three South African sites (42.3-66.6% in women and 2.81-17.5% in men) and the lowest in West Africa (1.25-4.22% in women and 1.19-2.20% in men). Across sites, higher socio-economic status and educational level were associated with higher BMI. Being married and increased dietary intake were associated with higher BMI in some communities, whilst smoking and alcohol intake were associated with lower BMI, as was HIV infection in the regions where it was prevalent.ConclusionIn SSA there is a marked variation in the prevalence of obesity both regionally and between men and women. Our data suggest that the drive for social upliftment within Africa will be associated with rising levels of obesity, which will require the initiation of targeted sex-specific intervention programmes across specific African communities.

Project description:Optimal birth spacing (defined as a birth spacing of 24-59 months) is incontrovertibly linked to better health outcomes for both mothers and babies. Using the most recent available Demographic and Health Survey data, we examined the patterns and determinants of short and long birth intervals among women in selected sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries.Reproductive health and sociodemographic data of 98,934 women from 8 SSA countries were analyzed. Unadjusted and adjusted multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine the net relationship between all the independent variables and short and long birth intervals.Overall, the majority of women in all the countries optimally spaced births. However, a significant proportion of women had short birth intervals in Chad (30.2%) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo DRC) (27.1%). Long birth spacing was more common in Eastern and Southern African countries, with Zimbabwe having the highest rate of long term birth interval (27.0%). Women who were aged 35 years and above in Uganda (RRR = 0.72, CI = 0.60-0.87), Tanzania (RRR = 0.62, CI = 0.49-0.77), Zimbabwe (RRR = 0.52, CI = 0.31-0.85), Nigeria (RRR = 0.82, CI = 0.72-0.94) and Togo (RRR = 0.67, CI = 0.46-0.96) had significantly lower odds of having short birth intervals compared to women aged 15-24 years. Older women (above 34 years) had increased odds for long birth intervals in all countries studied (Chad (RRR = 1.44, CI = 1.18-1.76), Congo DRC (RRR = 1.73, CI = 1.33-2.15), Malawi (RRR = 1.54, CI = 1.23-1.94) Zimbabwe (RRR = 1.95, CI = 1.26-3.02), Nigeria (RRR = 1.85 CI = 1.56-2.20), Togo (RRR = 2.12, CI = 1.46-3.07), Uganda (RRR = 1.48, CI = 1.15-1.91), Tanzania RRR = 2.12, CI = 1.53-2.93).The analysis suggested that the determinants of long and birth intervals differ and varies from country to country. The pattern of birth spacing found in this study appears to mirror the contraceptive use and fertility rate in the selected SSA countries. Birth intervals intervention addressing short birth intervals should target younger women in SSA, especially in Chad and Congo DRC, while intervention for long birth spacing should prioritize older, educated and wealthy women.
