Uncomputably complex renormalisation group flows.

ABSTRACT: Renormalisation group methods are among the most important techniques for analysing the physics of many-body systems: by iterating a renormalisation group map, which coarse-grains the description of a system and generates a flow in the parameter space, physical properties of interest can be extracted. However, recent work has shown that important physical features, such as the spectral gap and phase diagram, may be impossible to determine, even in principle. Following these insights, we construct a rigorous renormalisation group map for the original undecidable many-body system that appeared in the literature, which reveals a renormalisation group flow so complex that it cannot be predicted. We prove that each step of this map is computable, and that it converges to the correct fixed points, yet the resulting flow is uncomputable. This extreme form of unpredictability for renormalisation group flows had not been shown before and goes beyond the chaotic behaviour seen previously.

Additive rheology of complex granular flows.

Project description:Granular flows are omnipresent in nature and industrial processes, but their rheological properties such as apparent friction and packing fraction are still elusive when inertial, cohesive and viscous interactions occur between particles in addition to frictional and elastic forces. Here we report on extensive particle dynamics simulations of such complex flows for a model granular system composed of perfectly rigid particles. We show that, when the apparent friction and packing fraction are normalized by their cohesion-dependent quasistatic values, they are governed by a single dimensionless number that, by virtue of stress additivity, accounts for all interactions. We also find that this dimensionless parameter, as a generalized inertial number, describes the texture variables such as the bond network connectivity and anisotropy. Encompassing various stress sources, this unified framework considerably simplifies and extends the modeling scope for granular dynamics, with potential applications to powder technology and natural flows.

Pseudo-Darwinian evolution of physical flows in complex networks.

Project description:The evolution of complex transport networks is investigated under three strategies of link removal: random, intentional attack and "Pseudo-Darwinian" strategy. At each evolution step and regarding the selected strategy, one removes either a randomly chosen link, or the link carrying the strongest flux, or the link with the weakest flux, respectively. We study how the network structure and the total flux between randomly chosen source and drain nodes evolve. We discover a universal power-law decrease of the total flux, followed by an abrupt transport collapse. The time of collapse is shown to be determined by the average number of links per node in the initial network, highlighting the importance of this network property for ensuring safe and robust transport against random failures, intentional attacks and maintenance cost optimizations.

Reorganization of complex ciliary flows around regenerating <i>Stentor coeruleus</i>.

Project description:The phenomenon of ciliary coordination has garnered increasing attention in recent decades and multiple theories have been proposed to explain its occurrence in different biological systems. While hydrodynamic interactions are thought to dictate the large-scale coordinated activity of epithelial cilia for fluid transport, it is rather basal coupling that accounts for synchronous swimming gaits in model microeukaryotes such as Chlamydomonas. Unicellular ciliates present a fascinating yet understudied context in which coordination is found to persist in ciliary arrays positioned across millimetre scales on the same cell. Here, we focus on the ciliate Stentor coeruleus, chosen for its large size, complex ciliary organization, and capacity for cellular regeneration. These large protists exhibit ciliary differentiation between cortical rows of short body cilia used for swimming, and an anterior ring of longer, fused cilia called the membranellar band (MB). The oral cilia in the MB beat metachronously to produce strong feeding currents. Remarkably, upon injury, the MB can be shed and regenerated de novo. Here, we follow and track this developmental sequence in its entirety to elucidate the emergence of coordinated ciliary beating: from band formation, elongation, curling and final migration towards the cell anterior. We reveal a complex interplay between hydrodynamics and ciliary restructuring in Stentor, and highlight for the first time the importance of a ring-like topology for achieving long-range metachronism in ciliated structures. Global Density Profile For Particle Non-Conserving One Dimensional Transport From Renormalization Group Flows.

Project description:The totally asymmetric simple exclusion process along with particle adsorption and evaporation kinetics is a model of boundary-induced nonequilibrium phase transition. In the continuum limit, the average particle density across the system is described by a singular differential equation involving multiple scales which lead to the formation of boundary layers (BL) or shocks. A renormalization group analysis is developed here by using the location and the width of the BL as the renormalization parameters. It not only allows us to cure the large distance divergences in the perturbative solution for the BL but also generates, from the BL solution, an analytical form for the global density profile. The predicted scaling form is checked against numerical solutions for finite systems.

PyOIF: Computational tool for modelling of multi-cell flows in complex geometries.

Project description:A user ready, well documented software package PyOIF contains an implementation of a robust validated computational model for cell flow modelling. The software is capable of simulating processes involving biological cells immersed in a fluid. The examples of such processes are flows in microfluidic channels with numerous applications such as cell sorting, rare cell isolation or flow fractionation. Besides the typical usage of such computational model in the design process of microfluidic devices, PyOIF has been used in the computer-aided discovery involving mechanical properties of cell membranes. With this software, single cell, many cell, as well as dense cell suspensions can be simulated. Many cell simulations include cell-cell interactions and analyse their effect on the cells. PyOIF can be used to test the influence of mechanical properties of the membrane in flows and in membrane-membrane interactions. Dense suspensions may be used to study the effect of cell volume fraction on macroscopic phenomena such as cell-free layer, apparent suspension viscosity or cell degradation. The PyOIF module is based on the official ESPResSo distribution with few modifications and is available under the terms of the GNU General Public Licence. PyOIF is based on Python objects representing the cells and on the C++ computational core for fluid and interaction dynamics. The source code is freely available at GitHub repository, runs natively under Linux and MacOS and can be used in Windows Subsystem for Linux. The communication among PyOIF users and developers is maintained using active mailing lists. This work provides a basic background to the underlying computational models and to the implementation of interactions within this framework. We provide the prospective PyOIF users with a practical example of simulation script with reference to our publicly available User Guide.

Global tourist flows under the Belt and Road Initiative: A complex network analysis.

Project description:This study applies complex network analysis to examine global tourist flows network in the context of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Using tourist flows data between 221 countries/regions over 1995-2018, we investigate the nature and development patterns of structural properties of global network as well as factors influencing its formation. The descriptive analysis indicates that global tourist network was a sparse network with small world network characteristics. According to centrality characteristics, China showed the most influence in the BRI group, while Germany and the United States possessed key roles among non-BRI countries/regions. Exploratory analysis demonstrated significant influence of gravity variables in global, BRI and non-BRI tourist networks. This research advances existing tourism theory and provides practical implications for policymakers.

Complex network analysis of phase dynamics underlying oil-water two-phase flows.

Project description:Characterizing the complicated flow behaviors arising from high water cut and low velocity oil-water flows is an important problem of significant challenge. We design a high-speed cycle motivation conductance sensor and carry out experiments for measuring the local flow information from different oil-in-water flow patterns. We first use multivariate time-frequency analysis to probe the typical features of three flow patterns from the perspective of energy and frequency. Then we infer complex networks from multi-channel measurements in terms of phase lag index, aiming to uncovering the phase dynamics governing the transition and evolution of different oil-in-water flow patterns. In particular, we employ spectral radius and weighted clustering coefficient entropy to characterize the derived unweighted and weighted networks and the results indicate that our approach yields quantitative insights into the phase dynamics underlying the high water cut and low velocity oil-water flows.

Simulation of immiscible liquid-liquid flows in complex microchannel geometries using a front-tracking scheme.

Project description:The three-dimensional two-phase flow dynamics inside a microfluidic device of complex geometry is simulated using a parallel, hybrid front-tracking/level-set solver. The numerical framework employed circumvents numerous meshing issues normally associated with constructing complex geometries within typical computational fluid dynamics packages. The device considered in the present work is constructed via a module that defines solid objects by means of a static distance function. The construction combines primitive objects, such as a cylinder, a plane, and a torus, for instance, using simple geometrical operations. The numerical solutions predicted encompass dripping and jetting, and transitions in flow patterns are observed featuring the formation of drops, 'pancakes', plugs, and jets, over a wide range of flow rate ratios. We demonstrate the fact that vortex formation accompanies the development of certain flow patterns, and elucidate its role in their underlying mechanisms. Experimental visualisation with a high-speed imaging are also carried out. The numerical predictions are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

Deep learning-based automated and universal bubble detection and mask extraction in complex two-phase flows.

Project description:While investigating multiphase flows experimentally, the spatiotemporal variation in the interfacial shape between different phases must be measured to analyze the transport phenomena. For this, numerous image processing techniques have been proposed, showing good performance. However, they require trial-and-error optimization of thresholding parameters, which are not universal for all experimental conditions; thus, their accuracy is highly dependent on human experience, and the overall processing cost is high. Motivated by the remarkable improvements in deep learning-based image processing, we trained the Mask R-CNN to develop an automated bubble detection and mask extraction tool that works universally in gas-liquid two-phase flows. The training dataset was rigorously optimized to improve the model performance and delay overfitting with a finite amount of data. The range of detectable bubble size (particularly smaller bubbles) could be extended using a customized weighted loss function. Validation with different bubbly flows yields promising results, with AP50 reaching 98%. Even while testing with bubble-swarm flows not included in the training set, the model detects more than 95% of the bubbles, which is equivalent or superior to conventional image processing methods. The pure processing speed for mask extraction is more than twice as fast as conventional approaches, even without counting the time required for tedious threshold parameter tuning. Simulation of aggregating particles in complex flows by the lattice kinetic Monte Carlo method.

Project description:We develop and validate an efficient lattice kinetic Monte Carlo (LKMC) method for simulating particle aggregation in laminar flows with spatially varying shear rate, such as parabolic flow or flows with standing vortices. A contact time model was developed to describe the particle-particle collision efficiency as a function of the local shear rate, G, and approach angle, θ. This model effectively accounts for the hydrodynamic interactions between approaching particles, which is not explicitly considered in the LKMC framework. For imperfect collisions, the derived collision efficiency [ɛ=1 - ∫(0)(π/2) sinθ exp(-2cotθΓ(agg)/G)dθ] was found to depend only on Γ(agg)∕G, where Γ(agg) is the specified aggregation rate. For aggregating platelets in tube flow, Γ(agg)=0.683 s(-1) predicts the experimentally measured ε across a physiological range (G = 40-1000 s(-1)) and is consistent with α(2b)β(3)-fibrinogen bond dynamics. Aggregation in parabolic flow resulted in the largest aggregates forming near the wall where shear rate and residence time were maximal, however intermediate regions between the wall and the center exhibited the highest aggregation rate due to depletion of reactants nearest the wall. Then, motivated by stenotic or valvular flows, we employed the LKMC simulation developed here for baffled geometries that exhibit regions of squeezing flow and standing recirculation zones. In these calculations, the largest aggregates were formed within the vortices (maximal residence time), while squeezing flow regions corresponded to zones of highest aggregation rate.
