How Is Endodontics Taught in Italy? A Survey of Italian Dental Schools.

ABSTRACT: The aim of our study was to investigate how endodontics is taught in Italian universities. An online survey was conducted from August to December 2021. A comparison between courses led by full or associate professors (Group 1) versus courses led by other figures, such as researchers or temporary lecturers (Group 2), was made. A total of 28 out of 36 schools participated (78%). In most schools, endodontics is taught in the fifth year to 15-29 students. All schools planned pre-clinical endodontic training, and in 25/28 schools (89.3%), clinical endodontic training was also provided. The course programs varied among schools, and significantly more hours were allocated to teaching nonsurgical root canal treatment in Group 1 schools than in Group 2 schools. The average numbers of hours of preclinical and clinical training were 34.3 ± 23.6 and 84.1 ± 76.7, respectively. All schools used rotary NiTi files in their clinical training, and the vertical condensation of hot gutta-percha was the most frequently taught obturation technique. As expected, the scenario of endodontic education in Italian universities was variable and needs harmonization. Courses led by full or associate professors seem to be better structured.

Project description:PurposeCommunity-based dental education (CBDE) diverges from traditional dental school training methods by integrating dental students into primary care community settings. This immersive approach enables students to refine their clinical and hands-on skills while serving the oral health needs of underserved populations. This study aimed to identify ways in which Australian dental schools are currently implementing CBDE and compared to current evidence.Materials and methodsThis study utilized a 24-item, self-completion survey, adapted from existing questionnaires, which was sent to the CBDE coordinators in the nine eligible dental programs in Australia between mid-January 2023 and mid-April 2023. The survey consisted of multiple-choice, binary, and open-ended questions, including information on the level of student involvement, types of external clinics used, length of rotations, student supervision and assessment, pre-rotation preparation, and post-rotation evaluation, as well as challenges faced in implementing programs.ResultsSix of the nine invited coordinators responded, resulting in a 66.7% response rate. All participants confirmed that their schools had a community-based teaching program. All six respondents reported that participation in external clinics is required for graduation. Implementation of CBDE appears to be influenced by (1) level of student involvement, (2) the types of clinics utilised, (3) allocation and length of rotation, (4) student supervision and assessment, (5) pre-rotation preparation, and (6) post-rotation evaluation. Six (n = 6) institutions reported requiring a post-rotation reflection from students and all respondents reported seeking feedback from clinical supervisors at external sites. Emerging themes from open-ended questions highlight challenges in coordinating external rosters, securing funding, supervising students at external sites, and ensuring diverse types of student exposure during external rotations.ConclusionThis study provided insights into the implementation of CBDE in Australian dental schools. Results outlined in this research offer valuable insights for dental schools aiming to enhance their programs and improve student learning outcomes.

Project description:BackgroundLinks between the demanding nature of studies in the health sciences, students' personality traits and psychological distress have been well-established. While considerable amount of work has been done in medicine, evidence from the dental education arena is sparse and data from Latin America are lacking. The authors conducted a large-scale investigation of psychological distress among dental students in Colombia and sought to determine its curriculum and student-level correlates.MethodsThe Spanish version of the Derogatis' Symptoms Checklist Revised (SCL-90-R) was administered to all students officially registered and attending classes or clinics in 17 dental schools in 4 geographic districts of Colombia between January and April 2012. Additional information was collected on participants' socio-demographic information and first career choice, as well as school's characteristics such as class size. The Global Severity Index (GSI) score, a measure of overall psychological distress, served as the primary analytical endpoint. Analyses relied on multilevel mixed-effects linear and log-binomial regression, accounting for study design and sample characteristics.ResultsA total of 5700 dental students completed the survey, a response rate of 67%. Pronounced gradients were noted in the association between socio-economic status and psychological distress, with students in higher strata reporting fewer problems. After adjustment for all important covariates, there was an evident pattern of increasing psychological distress corresponding to the transition from the didactic, to the preclinical and clinical phases of training, with few differences between male and female students. Independent of other factors, reliance on own funds for education and having dentistry as the first career choice were associated with lower psychological distress.ConclusionsLevels of psychological distress correlated with students' socio-economic and study-level characteristics. Above and beyond the influence of person-level factors, variations in levels of distress paralleled specific transitional stages of the 5-year dental curriculum, providing opportunities for targeted interventions.

Project description:AimThis study aimed to assess different aspects of teaching posterior composite restorations in two dental schools in Palestine.Materials and methodsA questionnaire was emailed to the heads of the operative and conservative dentistry departments to collect detailed information on the teaching practices related to posterior composite restorations. The questionnaire comprised 22 questions structured to collect information on the time dedicated to teaching the topic, competency assessments, future plans for allocating time for each restoration type, relevant indications and contraindications, specific materials and techniques utilized in the application, and fees charged for posterior restorations. The gathered responses were collated in Excel and analyzed.ResultsBoth dental schools allocated similar teaching times to posterior composites and amalgam in their preclinical operative dentistry courses. However, there was a greater emphasis on composites in the clinical course than in the preclinical course at both institutions. Despite these differences, both institutions expressed a shared intention to allocate more time to teaching posterior composites while reducing the emphasis on teaching amalgam procedures. Consistency was observed across competency testing, cavity design preferences, and contraindications, with both schools favoring slot-type cavities. Furthermore, uniformity was noted in the management of operatively exposed dentin and matrix techniques, although variations existed in moisture isolation. Notably, both schools taught circumferential and sectional metal matrices but did not teach clear sectional matrices or use of bulk-fill composites. Additionally, the adhesive and light-curing practices remained consistent across both institutions.ConclusionThe findings of this study indicate that the teaching of posterior composite restorations is consistent across both Palestinian dental schools. Their curricula are aligned with contemporary international practices, demonstrating a strong commitment to modern operative dentistry and adherence to global standards. These findings offer valuable insights for educators and researchers and emphasize the need for ongoing adaptations to maintain high clinical standards.

Project description:ObjectiveDentists must be prepared to manage medical emergencies, which are arisen during dental practice together with the increase of age population and medically compromised patients. This study aims at assessing the occurrence of medical emergencies in a cohort of Italian dentists, to ascertain their level of confidence in the management of these conditions, also based on their educational training and type of medical graduation, and, finally, to know their educational needs, in order to plan appropriate institutional interventions for specific training.MethodsA national-based cross-sectional study was carried out by means of an online survey sent to all dentists working in Italy.ResultsThe survey included 6818 questionnaires. Most of the respondents (n = 4443; 65.2%) reported the occurrence of at least one medical emergency during their professional life. The events rarely resulted in death as declared by only 62 (0.9%) of respondents. The commonest medical emergency was the vasovagal syndrome. Most medical emergencies occurred during the dental procedure (n = 4883; 71.6%). An average degree of satisfaction about the ability to diagnose and manage medical emergencies was reported by most of respondents, with high level of confidence in treating vasovagal syndrome, while a lack in preparedness about the management of myocardial infarction or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and stroke. Medical doctors were more confident in managing the emergencies than dentistry graduates (p < .01). Considering the educational needs, almost all of participants (n = 6721; 98.6%) declared the need to improve their training and expressed their interest in theoretical-practical institutional courses as well as in the establishment of an official national register for medical emergencies occurred in dental practice.ConclusionsMedical emergencies are not negligible and the dentist should receive adequate training and continuing education to be updated and ready for their correct management.Clinical significanceThe dentist should be ready to deal with medical emergencies and provide first aid to the patient. The dentist is not always prepared to manage the most complex emergencies; therefore, there is the need to organize post-graduate courses and to set up an emergency register.
