Factors Affecting the Usage of Wearable Device Technology for Healthcare among Indian Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

ABSTRACT: Wearable device technology has recently been involved in the healthcare industry substantially. India is the world's third largest market for wearable devices and is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of ~26.33%. However, there is a paucity of literature analyzing the factors determining the acceptance of wearable healthcare device technology among low-middle-income countries. This cross-sectional, web-based survey aims to analyze the perceptions affecting the adoption and usage of wearable devices among the Indian population aged 16 years and above. A total of 495 responses were obtained. In all, 50.3% were aged between 25-50 years and 51.3% belonged to the lower-income group. While 62.2% of the participants reported using wearable devices for managing their health, 29.3% were using them daily. technology and task fitness (TTF) showed a significant positive correlation with connectivity (r = 0.716), health care (r = 0.780), communication (r = 0.637), infotainment (r = 0.598), perceived usefulness (PU) (r = 0.792), and perceived ease of use (PEOU) (r = 0.800). Behavioral intention (BI) to use wearable devices positively correlated with PEOU (r = 0.644) and PU (r = 0.711). All factors affecting the use of wearable devices studied had higher mean scores among participants who were already using wearable devices. Male respondents had significantly higher mean scores for BI (p = 0.034) and PEOU (p = 0.009). Respondents older than 25 years of age had higher mean scores for BI (p = 0.027) and Infotainment (p = 0.032). This study found a significant correlation with the adoption and acceptance of wearable devices for healthcare management in the Indian context.

Project description:BackgroundIt has been widely recognized that mastication behaviors are related to the health of the whole body and to lifestyle-related diseases. However, many studies were based on subjective questionnaires or were limited to small-scale research in the laboratory due to the lack of a device for measuring mastication behaviors during the daily meal objectively. Recently, a small wearable masticatory counter device, called bitescan (Sharp Co), for measuring masticatory behavior was developed. This wearable device is designed to assess objective masticatory behavior by being worn on the ear in daily life.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the relation between mastication behaviors in the laboratory and in daily meals and to clarify the difference in mastication behaviors between those with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and those without (non-MetS) measured using a wearable device.MethodsA total of 99 healthy volunteers (50 men and 49 women, mean age 36.4 [SD 11.7] years) participated in this study. The mastication behaviors (ie, number of chews and bites, number of chews per bite, and chewing rate) were measured using a wearable ear-hung device. Mastication behaviors while eating a rice ball (100 g) in the laboratory and during usual meals for an entire day were monitored, and the daily energy intake was calculated. Participants' abdominal circumference, fasting glucose concentration, blood pressure, and serum lipids were also measured. Mastication behaviors in the laboratory and during meals for 1 entire day were compared. The participants were divided into 2 groups using the Japanese criteria for MetS (positive/negative for MetS or each MetS component), and mastication behaviors were compared.ResultsMastication behaviors in the laboratory and during daily meals were significantly correlated (number of chews r=0.36; P<.001; number of bites r=0.49; P<.001; number of chews per bite r=0.33; P=.001; and chewing rate r=0.51; P<.001). Although a positive correlation was observed between the number of chews during the 1-day meals and energy intake (r=0.26, P=.009), the number of chews per calorie ingested was negatively correlated with energy intake (r=-0.32, P=.002). Of the 99 participants, 8 fit the criteria for MetS and 14 for pre-MetS. The number of chews and bites for a rice ball in the pre-MetS(+) group was significantly lower than the pre-MetS(-) group (P=.02 and P=.04, respectively). Additionally, scores for the positive abdominal circumference and hypertension subgroups were also less than the counterpart groups (P=.004 and P=.01 for chews, P=.006 and P=.02 for bites, respectively). The number of chews and bites for an entire day in the hypertension subgroup were significantly lower than in the other groups (P=.02 and P=.006). Furthermore, the positive abdominal circumference and hypertension subgroups showed lower numbers of chews per calorie ingested for 1-day meals (P=.03 and P=.02, respectively).ConclusionsThese results suggest a relationship between masticatory behaviors in the laboratory and those during daily meals and that masticatory behaviors are associated with MetS and MetS components.Trial registrationUniversity Hospital Medical Information Network Clinical Trials Registry R000034453; https://tinyurl.com/mwzrhrua.

Project description:BackgroundImplementation of digital technology has been suggested as a potential solution to future healthcare challenges. Healthcare personnel's attitudes are important in the acceptance and implementation of digital technologies.AimThe aims of this study were to (1) translate and validate two different questionnaires to Norwegian and Swedish respectively, and then (2) use these to examine nursing students' attitudes towards digital technology in healthcare, as well as their attitudes towards older adults' abilities to use digital technology.DesignCross-sectional.MethodsA web-based questionnaire was distributed in first year nursing students in a Norwegian and a Swedish university college, respectively. The questionnaire consisted of the short form of the 'Information Technology Attitude Scales for Health (ITASH)' and the 'Attitudes Towards Older Adults Using Digital technology (ATOAUT-11)' questionnaire. The questionnaires were translated and validated in both countries. Frequencies, Student's t-test, and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the data.ResultsIn total 236 students responded to the questionnaire in the period September 2022 to April 2023. Students mainly reported positive attitudes towards digital technology use in general. They most agreed with the items 'Using digital technology devices makes my communication with other health professionals faster', 'The sort of information I can get from the digital technology devices helps me give better care to patient', and 'Digital technology skills are becoming more and more necessary for healthcare professionals'. However, they reported more negative attitudes towards older adults using digital technology. They most agreed with the items 'One needs a lot of patience to explain to an older adult how to use digital technologies', 'It's hard to explain to older adults how to use digital technology', 'Using digital technology is harder for most older adults', and 'Most older adults fear using digital technology because they fear of being scammed or cheated'.ConclusionThe ITASH and the ATOAUT-11 is appropriate for use in a Norwegian and Swedish setting. Even if nursing students are positive to digital technology in healthcare in general, they are sceptical to older adults using digital technology. This may impact on their attitudes to using digital technology in the healthcare of older adults. These aspects need emphasis when revising nursing education curricula focusing on developing technological competencies in nursing, and gaining knowledge regarding older adults' use of digital technology.

Project description:BackgroundPrevious studies have predominantly focused on smartphone overdependence among adolescents and young adults. However, as smartphone usage has recently surged among South Korean middle-aged and older adults, the risk of smartphone overdependence cannot be overlooked among this population. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the smartphone usage pattern and the associated risk of overdependence in this specific age group.MethodsThe data for individuals who aged 50 or older were extracted from the dataset of a nationwide survey, "The Survey on Smartphone Overdependence, 2021," and the usage of each type of smartphone content and risk of smartphone overdependence among individuals in their 50 s and 60 s were investigated. Age-group-based differences in demographic characteristics, Smartphone Overdependence Scale scores, self-awareness of smartphone overdependence, digital literacy, and psychosocial factors were analyzed. Additionally, a multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the factors associated with the potential-to-high risk of smartphone overdependence in both age groups.ResultsIndividuals in their 50s had significantly higher digital literacy, social relations, life satisfaction, and smartphone overdependence scores than those in their 60s, and the percentage of individuals in the high-risk group was also higher in the 50s age group. For both age groups, the most used content was "messenger," "news," and "movies/TV/videos," whereas the least used content was e-learning, gambling, and adult content. The multivariable analysis indicated that, for individuals in their 50s, having a lower educational level was associated with significantly higher odds, whereas having a job and utilizing e-commerce-related contents on smartphone were associated with significantly lower odds of potential-to-high risk for smartphone overdependence. Concerning individuals in their 60s, having a lower educational level and using adult content or gambling were significantly associated with higher odds of potential-to-high risk for smartphone overdependence.ConclusionThis study reveals the risk of smartphone overdependence among middle-aged and older adults in South Korea as well as the associated risk factors. This will assist policymakers in developing policies for the appropriate use of smartphones by these age groups.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Addiction to smartphone usage is a common worldwide problem among adults, which might negatively affect their wellbeing. This study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with smartphone addiction and depression among a Middle Eastern population. METHODS:This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017 using a web-based questionnaire distributed via social media. Responses to the Smartphone Addiction Scale - Short version (10-items) were rated on a 6-point Likert scale, and their percentage mean score (PMS) was commuted. Responses to Beck's Depression Inventory (20-items) were summated (range 0-60); their mean score (MS) was commuted and categorized. Higher scores indicated higher levels of addiction and depression. Factors associated with these outcomes were identified using descriptive and regression analyses. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS:Complete questionnaires were 935/1120 (83.5%), of which 619 (66.2%) were females and 316 (33.8%) were males. The mean ± standard deviation of their age was 31.7 ± 11 years. Majority of participants obtained university education 766 (81.9%), while 169 (18.1%) had school education. The PMS of addiction was 50.2 ± 20.3, and MS of depression was 13.6 ± 10.0. A significant positive linear relationship was present between smart phone addiction and depression (y = 39.2 + 0.8×; P < 0.001). Significantly higher smartphone addiction scores were associated with younger age users, (β = - 0.203, adj. P = 0.004). Factors associated with higher depression scores were school educated users (β = - 2.03, adj. P = 0.01) compared to the university educated group and users with higher smart phone addiction scores (β =0.194, adj. P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS:The positive correlation between smartphone addiction and depression is alarming. Reasonable usage of smart phones is advised, especially among younger adults and less educated users who could be at higher risk of depression.
