ZIF-L to ZIF-8 Transformation: Morphology and Structure Controls.

ABSTRACT: The control of the structure, shape, and components of metal-organic frameworks, in which metal ions and organic ligands coordinate to form crystalline nanopore structures, plays an important role in the use of many electrochemical applications, such as energy storage, high-performance photovoltaic devices, and supercapacitors. In this study, systematic controls of synthesis variables were performed to control the morphology of ZIF-8 during the ZIF-L-to-ZIF-8 transformation of ZIF-L, which has the same building block as ZIF-8 but forms a two-dimensional structure. Furthermore, additional precursors or surfactants (Zn²⁺, 2mIm, and CTAB) were introduced during the transition to determine whether the alteration could be regulated. Lastly, the partial substitution insertion of a new organic precursor, 2abIm, during the ZIF-L-to-ZIF-8 transformation of ZIF-L was achieved, and modulation of the adsorption and pore characteristics (suppression of gate-opening properties of ZIF-8) has been confirmed.

Morphology and structure of ZIF-8 during crystallisation measured by dynamic angle-resolved second harmonic scattering.

Project description:Recent developments in nonlinear optical light scattering techniques have opened a window into morphological and structural characteristics for a variety of supramolecular systems. However, for the study of dynamic processes, the current way of measuring is often too slow. Here we present an alternative measurement scheme suitable for following dynamic processes. Fast acquisition times are achieved through Fourier imaging, allowing simultaneous detection at multiple scattering angles for different polarization combinations. This allows us to follow the crystal growth of the metal organic framework ZIF-8 in solution. The angle dependence of the signal provides insight into the growth mechanism by probing the evolution of size, shape and concentration, while polarization analysis yields structural information in terms of point group symmetry. Our findings highlight the potential of dynamic angle-resolved harmonic light scattering to probe crystal growth processes, assembly-disassembly of biological systems, adsorption, transport through membranes and myriad other applications.

Understanding the ZIF-L to ZIF-8 transformation from fundamentals to fully costed kilogram-scale production.

Project description:The production of MOFs at large scale in a sustainable way is key if these materials are to be exploited for their promised widespread application. Much of the published literature has focused on demonstrations of preparation routes using difficult or expensive methodologies to scale. One such MOF is nano-zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) - a material of interest for a range of possible applications. Work presented here shows how the synthesis of ZIF-8 can be tracked by a range of methods including X-ray diffraction, thermo gravimetric analysis and inelastic neutron scattering - which offer the prospect of in-line monitoring of the synthesis reaction. Herein we disclose how the production of nano-ZIF-8 can be conducted at scale using the intermediate phase ZIF-L. By understanding the economics and demonstrating the production of 1 kg of nano-ZIF-8 at pilot scale we have shown how this once difficult to make material can be produced to specification in a scalable and cost-efficient fashion.

Localized thermal spike driven morphology and electronic structure transformation in swift heavy ion irradiated TiO<sub>2</sub> nanorods.

Project description:Irradiation of materials by high energy (∼MeV) ions causes intense electronic excitations through inelastic transfer of energy that significantly modifies physicochemical properties. We report the effect of 100 MeV Ag ion irradiation and resultant localized (∼few nm) thermal spike on vertically oriented TiO2 nanorods (∼100 nm width) towards tailoring their structural and electronic properties. Rapid quenching of the thermal spike induced molten state within ∼0.5 picosecond results in a distortion in the crystalline structure that increases with increasing fluences (ions per cm2). Microstructural investigations reveal ion track formation along with a corrugated surface of the nanorods. The thermal spike simulation validates the experimental observation of the ion track dimension (∼10 nm diameter) and melting of the nanorods. The optical absorption study shows direct bandgap values of 3.11 eV (pristine) and 3.23 eV (5 × 1012 ions per cm2) and an indirect bandgap value of 3.10 eV for the highest fluence (5 × 1013 ions per cm2). First principles electronic structure calculations corroborate the direct-to-indirect transition that is attributed to the structural distortion at the highest fluence. This work presents a unique technique to selectively tune the properties of nanorods for versatile applications.

Transformation of ZIF-8 nanoparticles into 3D nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbon for Li-S batteries.

Project description:Li-S batteries have been attracting increasing interest owing to their remarkable advantages of low cost, high theoretical capacity and high theoretical energy density. Nevertheless, the severe "shuttle effects" of lithium polysulfides have markedly limited the performance of the cells and further hindered their commercial applications. Herein, a novel scheme combining a transformation strategy with ammonia treatment was developed to fabricate ZIF-8-derived nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbon (NHPC/NH3). When NHPC/NH3 was used as a host of sulfur, the obtained S@NHPC/NH3 cathode for Li-S cells presented an initial specific capacity of 1654 mA h g-1 and an outstanding cycling stability with only 0.27% attenuation per cycle from the 30th cycle to 130th cycle. Together with the theoretical calculation, it was concluded that such excellent electrochemical performances should be attributed to the suppressed "shuttle effect" via both physical and chemical adsorption of lithium polysulfides in the optimized microporous structures with effective nitrogen doping sites as well as the improved kinetics owing to the abundant meso/macroporous structures.

Exploration on the mechanism of crystal morphology transformation in mordenite.

Project description:Mordenite is extensively utilized in the domains of adsorption and catalysis owing to its excellent selectivity, stability, and renewability. In this work, the effects of crystal seeds, the ratio of SiO2/Al2O3, crystallization temperature, silicon source, and structure directing agents on the morphologies of mordenite are investigated by utilizing hexamethyleneimine (HMI) as the OSDA. Results indicate that the transformation of rod-like and flake-like mordenites is mainly related to the increasing ratio of SiO2/Al2O3, and the formation of flake-like morphology is related to various conditions. On a macro level, the rod-like and flake-like zeolites are formed by transforming amorphous precursors into small crystals and growing them epitaxially. On a micro level, HMIH+ progressively displaces Na+ to balance the framework charge with the increasing ratio of SiO2/Al2O3. DFT calculation and nuclear magnetic resonance results confirm the specific guidance of HMI on the T2 and T4 sites of the rod-like and flake-like mordenites. The conclusion can serve as a reference for regulating the morphology and active sites of mordenite.

Project description:In almost all vertebrates, the downstream of the sox9 signaling axis is well conserved for testis differentiation. The upstream genes of this pathway vary from species to species during evolution. Yet, little is known about how these signaling cascades are regulated and what cellular processes are dominant in ovary-testis transformation in juvenile zebrafish. In this study, we find that the transforming gonads undergo activation of sox9a-expressing stromal cells with increased deposition of extracellular matrix and formation of degenerative compartments. This leads to follicle disassembly, oocyte degeneration, follicle cell-cyp19a1a-amh conversions, and, eventually, formation of the testis cord. In vitro primary culture of juvenile ovary tissue in gonadotropins increases cytoplasmic accumulation of sox9a and p-Erk1/2, and induces mesenchymal morphology. MAPK inhibitors (MKI), a mixture of PD98059 and U0216, eliminate the cytoplasmic distribution but do not eradicate nuclear localization of sox9a and p-Erk1/2. Nuclear p53 are relatively increased in MKI-treated cells that exhibit less spreading and reduced proliferation. Despite uniform nuclear condensation, only a fraction of cells displayed the apoptotic phenotype. These results suggest that high levels of cytoplasmic sox9a and p-Erk1/2 activity activate stromal cells and enhance the production of extracellular matrix required for testis cord formation, whereas deregulation and translocation of sox9a and p-Erk1/2 induce follicle disassembly and incomplete apoptosis associated with nuclear p53. Together with the established FSH/cAMP/MAPK/AMH pathway in mammalian granulosa and Sertoli cells, we demonstrated that the sox9 axis signaling that determines testis formation in mammals also induces zebrafish ovary-testis transition, and adds to its conserved role in sex reversal.

Phase Transformation and Morphology Evolution of Ti50Cu25Ni20Sn? during Mechanical Milling.

Project description:Nanocrystalline/amorphous powder was produced by ball milling of Ti50Cu25Ni20Sn? (at.%) master alloy. Both laser diffraction particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to monitor the changes in the particle size as well as in the shape of particles as a function of milling time. During ball milling, the average particle size decreased with milling time from >320 µm to ~38 µm after 180 min of milling. The deformation-induced hardening and phase transformation caused the hardness value to increase from 506 to 779 HV. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to observe the changes in the phases/amorphous content as a function of milling time. The amount of amorphous fraction increased continuously until 120 min milling (36 wt % amorphous content). The interval of crystallite size was between 1 and 10 nm after 180 min of milling with 25 wt % amorphous fractions. Cubic Cu(Ni,Cu)Ti? structure was transformed into the orthorhombic structure owing to the shear/stress, dislocations, and Cu substitution during the milling process.

Enhanced adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 for chemical warfare agent simulants caused by its morphology and surface charge.

Project description:The effective separation of toxic chemicals, including chemical warfare agents (CWAs), from the environment via adsorption is of great importance because such chemicals pose a significant threat to humans and ecosystems. To this end, the development of effective porous adsorbents for CWA removal has received significant attention. Understanding the specific interactions between adsorbents and CWAs must precede for the development of effective adsorbents. Herein, we report the relationship between the adsorption capacity of porous ZIF-8 and its morphological and surface characteristics. Four types of ZIF-8, which have different morphologies (such as cubic, rhombic dodecahedron, and leaf- and plate-shaped samples), were selectively prepared. The four types of ZIF-8 were found to have different surface charges owing to dissimilarly exposed components on the surfaces and additionally incorporated components. The specific surface charges of ZIF-8 were found to be closely related to their adsorption capacities for CWA simulants such as 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) and dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP). Cubic ZIF-8, with the most positive surface charge among four ZIF-8 samples, exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for CEES and DMMP via the effective polar interaction. Moreover, ZIF-8 exhibited excellent recyclability without losing its adsorption capacity and without critical morphological or structural changes.

The translational regulator Cup controls NMJ presynaptic terminal morphology.

Project description:During oogenesis and early embryonic development in Drosophila, translation of proteins from maternally deposited mRNAs is tightly controlled. We and others have previously shown that translational regulatory proteins that function during oogenesis also have essential roles in the nervous system. Here we examine the role of Cup in neuromuscular system development. Maternal Cup controls translation of localized mRNAs encoding the Oskar and Nanos proteins and binds to the general translation initiation factor eIF4E. In this paper, we show that zygotic Cup protein is localized to presynaptic terminals at larval neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). cup mutant NMJs have strong phenotypes characterized by the presence of small clustered boutons called satellite boutons. They also exhibit an increase in the frequency of spontaneous glutamate release events (mEPSPs). Reduction of eIF4E expression synergizes with partial loss of Cup expression to produce satellite bouton phenotypes. The presence of satellite boutons is often associated with increases in retrograde bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, and we show that synaptic BMP signaling is elevated in cup mutants. cup genetically interacts with two genes, EndoA and Dap160, that encode proteins involved in endocytosis that are also neuronal modulators of the BMP pathway. Endophilin protein, encoded by the EndoA gene, is downregulated in a cup mutant. Our results are consistent with a model in which Cup and eIF4E work together to ensure efficient localization and translation of endocytosis proteins in motor neurons and control the strength of the retrograde BMP signal.

Electrical resistance of the current collector controls lithium morphology.

Project description:The electrodeposition of low surface area lithium is critical to successful adoption of lithium metal batteries. Here, we discover the dependence of lithium metal morphology on electrical resistance of substrates, enabling us to design an alternative strategy for controlling lithium morphology and improving electrochemical performance. By modifying the current collector with atomic layer deposited conductive (ZnO, SnO2) and resistive (Al2O3) nanofilms, we show that conductive films promote the formation of high surface area lithium deposits, whereas highly resistive films promote the formation of lithium clusters of low surface area. We reveal an electrodeposition mechanism in which radial diffusion of electroactive species is promoted on resistive substrates, resulting in lateral growth of large (150 µm in diameter) planar lithium deposits. Using resistive substrates, similar lithium morphologies are formed in three distinct classes of electrolytes, resulting in up to ten-fold improvement in battery performance. Ultimately, we report anode-free pouch cells using the Al2O3-modified copper that maintain 60 % of their initial discharge capacity after 100 cycles, displaying the benefits of resistive substrates for controlling lithium electrodeposition.
