Nonvolatile Ternary Memristor Based on Fluorene-Benzimidazole Copolymer/Au NP Composites.

ABSTRACT: A donor-acceptor type polymer of poly [2,7-(9,9-dioctyl)-fluorene-alt-7H-benzimidazo-[2,1-a]benzo[de]isoquinolin-7-one] (PF-BBO) based on benzimidazole groups was synthesized. This material was incorporated into data storage devices that exhibited good data storage characteristics. In order to improve the storage properties of the device, Au NPs were compounded in this material. We observed an increase in the ratio of switching current for the device with the PF-BBO/Au NP composite as the active layer. The device comprising 8 wt% Au NPs demonstrated optimal storage performance with a switching current ratio of 1:3.4 × 102:1.0 × 105 and a threshold voltage of -0.40 V/-0.85 V, respectively. The number of cycle times of this device was over 3000, which indicates excellent stability. Thus, the devices containing PF-BBO/Au NP composite as active materials offer a new dimension for future application prospects of high-density data storage.

Time-varying data processing with nonvolatile memristor-based temporal kernel.

Project description:Recent advances in physical reservoir computing, which is a type of temporal kernel, have made it possible to perform complicated timing-related tasks using a linear classifier. However, the fixed reservoir dynamics in previous studies have limited application fields. In this study, temporal kernel computing was implemented with a physical kernel that consisted of a W/HfO2/TiN memristor, a capacitor, and a resistor, in which the kernel dynamics could be arbitrarily controlled by changing the circuit parameters. After the capability of the temporal kernel to identify the static MNIST data was proven, the system was adopted to recognize the sequential data, ultrasound (malignancy of lesions) and electrocardiogram (arrhythmia), that had a significantly different time constant (10-7 vs. 1 s). The suggested system feasibly performed the tasks by simply varying the capacitance and resistance. These functionalities demonstrate the high adaptability of the present temporal kernel compared to the previous ones.

Flexible multilevel nonvolatile biocompatible memristor with high durability.

Project description:Current protein or glucose based biomemristors have low resistance-switching performance and require complex structural designs, significantly hindering the development of implantable memristor devices. It is imperative to discover novel candidate materials for biomemristor with high durability and excellent biosafety for implantable health monitoring. Herein, we initially demonstrate the resistance switching characteristics of a nonvolatile memristor in a configuration of Pt/AlOOH/ITO consisting of biocompatible AlOOH nanosheets sandwiched between a Indium Tin Oxides (ITO) electrode and a platinum (Pt) counter-electrode. The hydrothermally synthesized AlOOH nanosheets have excellent biocompatibility as confirmed through the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) tests. Four discrete resistance levels are achieved in this assembled device in responsible to different compliance currents (ICC) for the set process, where the emerging multilevel states show high durability over 103 cycles, outperforming the protein-based biomemristors under similar conditions. The excellent performance of the Pt/AlOOH/ITO memristor is attributed to the significant role of hydrogen proton with pipe effect, as confirmed by both experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) analyses. The present results indicate the nonvolatile memristors with great potential as the next generation implantable multilevel resistive memories for long-term human health monitoring.

Impedimetric Biosensors for Detecting Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) Based on Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/Gold Nanoparticle (Au NP) Composites.

Project description:In advanced forms of diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusive disease and exudative age-related macular degeneration, vision loss is associated with elevated levels or extravasation of vascular endothelial-derived growth factor (VEGF) into the retina, vitreous, and anterior chamber of the eye. We hypothesize that point-of-care biosensors, capable of rapidly and precisely measuring VEGF levels within the eye will assist clinicians in assessing disease severity, and in establishing individualized dosing intervals for intraocular anti-VEGF injection therapy. An impedance biosensor based on a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/gold nanoparticle (Au NP) composite was developed for detecting VEGF. PEDOT with Au NP was electrochemically deposited on three different medical electrode sensor designs: free-standing pads, screen printed dots, and interdigitated micro-strip electrodes. Anti-VEGF antibody was covalently immobilized on the surface of the polymer films through attachment to citrate-functionalized Au NPs, and the resulting composites were used to detect VEGF-165 by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The PEDOT-Au NP composite materials were characterized using optical microscopy, SEM/EDS, FIB, TEM, and STEM techniques. Among the different micro-electrodes, the interdigitated strip shape showed the best overall film stability and reproducibility. A linear relationship was established between the charge transfer resistance (R ct ) and VEGF concentration. The detection limit of VEGF was found to be 0.5 pg/mL, with a correlation coefficient of 0.99 ± 0.064%. These results indicate that the proposed PEDOT/Au NP composites can be used in designing low-cost and accurate VEGF biosensors for applications such as clinical diagnosis of VEGF-mediated eye disease.

Ternary Logic with Stateful Neural Networks Using a Bilayered TaO<sub>X</sub> -Based Memristor Exhibiting Ternary States.

Project description:A memristive stateful neural network allowing complete Boolean in-memory computing attracts high interest in future electronics. Various Boolean logic gates and functions demonstrated so far confirm their practical potential as an emerging computing device. However, spatio-temporal efficiency of the stateful logic is still too limited to replace conventional computing technologies. This study proposes a ternary-state memristor device (simply a ternary memristor) for application to ternary stateful logic. The ternary-state implementable memristor device is developed with bilayered tantalum oxide by precisely controlling the oxygen content in each oxide layer. The device can operate 157 ternary logic gates in one operational clock, which allows an experimental demonstration of a functionally complete three-valued Łukasiewicz logic system. An optimized logic cascading strategy with possible ternary gates is ≈20% more efficient than conventional binary stateful logic, suggesting it can be beneficial for higher performance in-memory computing.

Sprayable elastic conductors based on block copolymer silver nanoparticle composites.

Project description:Block copolymer silver nanoparticle composite elastic conductors were fabricated through solution blow spinning and subsequent nanoparticle nucleation. The reported technique allows for conformal deposition onto nonplanar substrates. We additionally demonstrated the ability to tune the strain dependence of the electrical properties by adjusting nanoparticle precursor concentration or localized nanoparticle nucleation. The stretchable fiber mats were able to display electrical conductivity values as high as 2000 ± 200 S/cm with only a 12% increase in resistance after 400 cycles of 150% strain. Stretchable elastic conductors with similar and higher bulk conductivity have not achieved comparable stability of electrical properties. These unique electromechanical characteristics are primarily the result of structural changes during mechanical deformation. The versatility of this approach was demonstrated by constructing a stretchable light emitting diode circuit and a strain sensor on planar and nonplanar substrates.

Novel Conjugated Side Chain Fluorinated Polymers Based on Fluorene for Light-Emitting and Ternary Flash Memory Devices.

Project description:Three novel conjugated polymers based on 9,9'-dioctylfluorene unit and isoindolo[2,1-a]benzimidazol-11-one with different fluorine substituents (0, 2 and 4) were synthesized. PLED and resistive memory devices based on these polymers were prepared consequently. PLED based on four-fluorinated polymer showed the highest maximum brightness of 3192 cd m-2 with almost 5-fold increase of current efficiency 8-fold increase of external quantum efficiency compared to that of the other two, and all the PLEDs exhibited good emission stability with no noticeable change of electroluminescence even under high voltage of 10 V. The memory device of doubly-fluorinated polymer exhibited ternary flash behavior with threshold voltages below -2.5 V, while device of four-fluorinated polymer possessed ON/OFF current ratio above 104. Impact of fluorine substitutions on the performance of devices were briefly investigated. The results revealed that the improvement of device performance might not scale with the increasing number of fluorine substitutions, and the four-fluorine-substituted polymer and doubly-fluorinated polymer could be encouraging materials for applications of PLED and resistive memory device and worth of further design of other new polymer systems.

Solvent influence on molecular interactions in the bulk of fluorene copolymer films.

Project description:The effect of intermolecular interactions between the chains of the amorphous PFO-MEH-PPV films built from toluene and tetrahydrofuran (THF) were studied by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, applying a successive solvent removal procedure. In the good solvent toluene, the incidence of topological entanglements is more significant. While in the poor solvent, coplanar interactions between neighbouring segments of the chains were also found, which is characteristics of cohesional entanglements. Structure factor curves of the films showed three peaks associated with the microstructure of the film, as previously reported by WAX diffractogram measurements. Moreover, the good solvent promotes more flexibility in dihedral angles, and the chains become nearer to each other.

Fabrication of CuO-NP-Doped PVDF Composites Based Electrospun Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Wearable and Biomedical Applications.

Project description:A flexible and portable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based on electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) doped with copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt.-% w.r.t. PVDF content) was fabricated. The structural and crystalline properties of the as-prepared PVDF-CuO composite membranes were characterized using SEM, FTIR, and XRD. To fabricate the TENG device, the PVDF-CuO was considered a tribo-negative film and the polyurethane (PU) a counter-positive film. The output voltage of the TENG was analyzed using a custom-made dynamic pressure setup, under a constant load of 1.0 kgf and 1.0 Hz frequency. The neat PVDF/PU showed only 1.7 V, which further increased up to 7.5 V when increasing the CuO contents from 2 to 8 wt.-%. A decrease in output voltage to 3.9 V was observed for 10 wt.-% CuO. Based on the above results, further measurements were carried out using the optimal sample (8 wt.-% CuO). Its output voltage performance was evaluated as a function of varying load (1 to 3 kgf) and frequency (0.1 to 1.0 Hz) conditions. Finally, the optimized device was demonstrated in real-time wearable sensor applications, such as human motion and health-monitoring applications (respiration and heart rate).

Vertically stacked, low-voltage organic ternary logic circuits including nonvolatile floating-gate memory transistors.

Project description:Multi-valued logic (MVL) circuits based on heterojunction transistor (HTR) have emerged as an effective strategy for high-density information processing without increasing the circuit complexity. Herein, an organic ternary logic inverter (T-inverter) is demonstrated, where a nonvolatile floating-gate flash memory is employed to control the channel conductance systematically, thus realizing the stabilized T-inverter operation. The 3-dimensional (3D) T-inverter is fabricated in a vertically stacked form based on all-dry processes, which enables the high-density integration with high device uniformity. In the flash memory, ultrathin polymer dielectrics are utilized to reduce the programming/erasing voltage as well as operating voltage. With the optimum programming state, the 3D T-inverter fulfills all the important requirements such as full-swing operation, optimum intermediate logic value (~VDD/2), high DC gain exceeding 20 V/V as well as low-voltage operation (< 5 V). The organic flash memory exhibits long retention characteristics (current change less than 10% after 104 s), leading to the long-term stability of the 3D T-inverter. We believe the 3D T-inverter employing flash memory developed in this study can provide a useful insight to achieve high-performance MVL circuits.

Magnetic Polymer Actuators with Self-Sensing Resistive Bending Response Based on Ternary Polymer Composites.

Project description:A multifunctional polymer-based composite has been designed based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as polymer matrix and cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4, CFO) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as fillers, allowing to combine magnetic and electrical responses. The composites were prepared by solvent casting with a fixed 20 wt % concentration of CFO and varying the MWCNTs content between 0 and 3 wt %, allowing to tailor the electrical behavior. The morphology, polymer phase, and thermal and magnetic properties are nearly independent of the MWCNT filler content within the polymer matrix. On the other hand, the mechanical and electrical properties strongly depend on the MWCNT content and a maximum d.c. electrical conductivity value of 4 × 10-4 S·cm-1 has been obtained for the 20 wt %CFO-3 wt %MWCNT/PVDF sample, which is accompanied by an 11.1 emu·g-1 magnetization. The suitability of this composite for magnetic actuators with self-sensing strain characteristics is demonstrated with excellent response and reproducibility.
