Breathing (or respiration) is an unconscious and complex motor behavior which neuronal drive emerges from the brainstem. In simplistic terms, respiratory motor activity comprises two phases, inspiration (uptake of oxygen, O<sub>2</sub>) and expiration (release of carbon dioxide, CO<sub>2</sub>).
