A narrative review on vaccination rate and factors associated with the willingness to receive pneumococcal vaccine in Chinese adult population.

ABSTRACT: The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV-23) is the only approved vaccine for pneumococcal diseases in elderly Chinese population. Though regional studies explored the PPSV-23 vaccination coverage rates and influencing factors in China, a large-scale, nation-wide epidemiological surveillance studies to understand the different factors impeding pneumococcal vaccination rate are required. Hence, this review summarized PPSV-23 coverage rate, analyzed and identified vaccination influencing factors among elderly population across China by exploring articles published in CNKI, Wanfang and PubMed databases. Pneumococcal vaccination coverage rate was found to be low at around 1.23%~42.10% in China. Co-morbidities, knowledge, attitude, perception toward pneumonia and PPSV-23, education level, socio-economic disparities, health education and local policies were some of the factors associated with vaccination willingness among elderly Chinese population. Interventions or policies like government funding, subsidies, inclusion of PPSV-23 in medical insurance, or systematic encouragement from HCPs as key strategies should be implemented to encourage vaccination.

Project description:BackgroundBreast cancer (BC) patients have a higher mortality rate after COVID-19 infection, but data on vaccination of BC patients and attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination and safety after vaccination are lacking. We wanted to understand the willingness and factors of BC survivors to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, and their adverse reactions. The purpose is to judge the safety of vaccination, and find strategies to promote vaccination in BC patients.MethodsOffline and online questionnaire surveys were provided in outpatient clinics and on an online follow-up platform, respectively, to collect information. Factors influencing vaccination willingness were analyzed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression. All statistical tests were performed bilaterally, and a P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Patients who have been vaccinated need to fill in questions about the impact on quality of life after vaccination, the type and frequency of vaccination, and side effects.ResultsA total of 497 valid questionnaires were collected; 289 (58.1%) BC survivors were vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine, and 379 (76.26%) BC survivors had a fully or basically accepting attitude toward vaccination. Survivors over 70 years of age, educated only to high school level, and those receiving chemotherapy had significantly lower levels of acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines. Multivariate logistic regression analyses suggested that treatment status and cognitive attitude were independent factors influencing COVID-19 vaccination among BC survivors. The main reason for being vaccinated was "doctor recommendation" (57.26%). Unwillingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccine was mainly due to "the unknown safety of the vaccine in cancer patients" (67.80%). A total of 97.56% of the survivors believed that vaccination had no or almost no effect on their quality of life. Among the BC survivors, 18 (6.23%) had adverse reactions after vaccination. All adverse reactions were grade 1 or 2, and no adverse reactions of grade 3 or above were reported. The adverse reactions reported by 15 survivors (83.33%) markedly improved within 1 week.ConclusionsIn terms of cognitive attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines, elderly individuals and those with a lower education level were less receptive to vaccination. Therefore, attention to elderly survivors can help improve the vaccination rate.

Project description:COVID-19 vaccinations are essential to mitigate the pandemic and prevent severe SARS-CoV-2 infections. However, the serum antibody levels in vaccinated individuals gradually decrease over time, while SARS-CoV-2 is undergoing an evolution toward more transmissible variants, such as B.1.617.2, ultimately increasing the risk of breakthrough infections and further virus spread. This cross-sectional online study of adult Poles (n = 2427) was conducted in September 2021 (before a general recommendation to administer a booster COVID-19 vaccine dose in Poland was issued) to assess the attitude of individuals who completed the current vaccination regime toward a potential booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and identify potential factors that may influence it. Overall, 71% of participants declared willingness to receive a booster COVID-19 dose, with a low median level of fear of receiving it of 1.0 (measured by the 10-point Likert-type scale), which was increased particularly in those having a worse experience (in terms of severity of side effects and associated fear) with past COVID-19 vaccination. The lowest frequency of willingness to receive a booster dose (26.7%) was seen in the group previously vaccinated with Ad26.COV2.S. The majority of individuals vaccinated previously with mRNA vaccines wished to receive the same vaccine, while in the case of AZD1222, such accordance was observed only in 9.1%. The main reasons against accepting a booster COVID-19 dose included the side effects experienced after previous doses, the opinion that further vaccination is unnecessary, and safety uncertainties. Women, older individuals (≥50 years), subjects with obesity, chronic diseases, and pre-vaccination and post-vaccination SARS-CoV-2 infections, and those with a history of vaccination against influenza were significantly more frequently willing to receive a booster COVID-19 dose. Moreover, the majority of immunosuppressed individuals (88%) were willing to receive an additional dose. The results emphasize some hesitancy toward potential further COVID-19 vaccination in the studied group of Poles and indicate the main groups to be targeted with effective science communication regarding the booster doses.

Project description:BackgroundPeople with pre-existing chronic diseases are more likely to acquire COVID-19 infections, which can be fatal, and die from COVID-19 illness. COVID-19 vaccination will benefit those at a higher risk of developing complications and dying from the disease. This study aimed to determine chronic patients' willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccine and the factors that influence their willingness.MethodAn institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 423 adult chronic patients in the University of Gondar specialized hospital outpatient departments. The participants were chosen using systematic random sampling methods with an interval of 5. Face-to-face interviews were used to collect data from eligible respondents. Epi-data version 4.6 and SPSS version 25 were used for the data entry data analysis. Bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the relationship between the dependent and independent factors. An odds ratio with 95 percent confidence intervals and a P-value was used to determine the association's strength and statistical significance.ResultOut of 401 respondents, 219 (54.6%) with [95% CI (49.7-59.5%)] of study participants were willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Being a healthcare worker (AOR = 2.94, 95% CI: 1.24-6.96), Lost family members or friends due to COVID-19 (AOR = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.21-5.00), good knowledge about COVID-19 vaccine (AOR = 2.44, 95% CI: 1.37-4.33), favorable attitude towards COVID-19 vaccine (AOR = .8.56 95% CI: 4.76-15.38), perceived suitability of the COVID-19 infection (AOR = 2.94, 95% CI: 1.62-5.33) and perceived benefit of the COVID-19 vaccine (AOR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.08-3.31), were found to be a significant association with the willingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccine among chronic patients.ConclusionThis study confirms that around 55% of adult chronic patients were willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Providing health education for chronic patients to emphasize the knowledge and attitude of the COVID-19 vaccine and raise patients' perceived risk of COVID-19 and the benefit of the COVID-19 vaccine could be recommended to improve their willingness to COVID-19 vaccination.

Project description:BackgroundCOVID-19, which is caused by SARS-CoV-2, is a major global health threat. The dominant variant of SARS-CoV-2 has changed over time due to continuous evolution. We aimed to evaluate the coverage of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination among employees in China, explore their willingness to receive the SARS-CoV-2 variant vaccine and examine the potential factors influencing vaccination coverage and willingness.MethodsA cross-sectional epidemiological survey was conducted online from January 1, 2022, to January 30, 2022. The information collected in the survey included sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle habits, vaccination coverage, willingness to be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 variants and the reasons for vaccination and willingness. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the associations of potential factors with the rate of vaccination and the willingness to be vaccinated.ResultsAmong 62,395 eligible participants, the coverage of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination was 98.9% for at least one dose and 70.1% for a booster. The great majority of vaccinated individuals (94.4%) voluntarily received the vaccine. A total of 60,694 respondents (97.7%) were willing to be vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 variants, mainly due to confidence in the effectiveness of vaccines (92.8%). A total of 1431 respondents were unwilling to be vaccinated, mainly because of concerns about the adverse effects of vaccines (77.6%). Longer education duration was associated with a higher rate of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and willingness to be vaccinated. General or poor health status and having no history of influenza vaccination were associated with a lower rate of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and willingness to be vaccinated. Additionally, we observed a significant positive association of abuse experience with the willingness to be vaccinated.ConclusionAlthough the rate of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and the willingness to be vaccinated were relatively high in the study population, there were still some respondents with vaccine hesitancy. Relevant strategies based on significant related factors should be developed and implemented to encourage vaccination.
