Automated BIM-based structural design and cost optimization model for reinforced concrete buildings.

ABSTRACT: The process of optimizing building designs requires developing several architectural and structural layout alternatives. Traditionally, limited number of design iterations can be conducted manually, which is time consuming and results in non-optimum designs in terms of limited functionality or high costs. The goal of this research is to develop an advanced Building Information Modeling (BIM) model for automating and optimizing design of building layouts and structural elements to reach minimum construction cost while abiding by the functionality constraints of the architectural design. The developed model integrates concepts from structural design, BIM modeling, and computer programming into one advanced optimization framework. The model was tested and validated in 11 case studies and is found to reduce the structural materials cost by up to 15% per floor without compromising the defined space requirements.

Effects of Concrete Grades and Column Spacings on the Optimal Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings.

Project description:This paper investigates the effects of concrete grades and column spacings on the optimal design of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. To this end, cost design optimization was performed for buildings with three different floor systems: flat plates (FS), flat slabs with drop panels (FSDP), and solid slabs (SS). The evolutionary method provided by the Excel solver was used as the optimization algorithm because it can deal with the complex nature of structural design problems. The objective function was the total construction cost of the building, including the costs of concrete, reinforcement bars, labor, and formwork, while still fulfilling the constraints of the Egyptian code of practice (ECP-18). The applicability of the presented algorithm was investigated in a design example, where the tuning of the evolutionary algorithm control parameters was sought, and the best parameters were investigated. Two case studies were employed to study the impacts of changing the column spacing and concrete grades on the optimal cost for each floor system. The results showed that low concrete grades, (i.e., characteristic strength up to 40 MPa) and column spacings up to 5 m are preferred in terms of direct construction costs for low-rise RC residential buildings.

Progressive structural capacity loss assessment-A framework for modern reinforced concrete buildings.

Project description:By the virtue of burgeoning terrorism, the exponential growth of advanced weaponry, and allied aids for explosions, it is quite evident that infrastructural facilities in the world have increasingly become more susceptible to sabotaging activities. The ever enhancing employment of reinforced concrete (RC) in the construction industry around the globe, the progressive collapse mechanisms, and respective mitigation strategies in the context of terrorism have garnered quite an attraction by the structural engineering community. The proficiency to envisage the complete collapse under the chain reaction of structural failures, partial collapse of key structural members, or the strength degradation of fundamental structural elements under the blast or impact loading can deliver significant information to cope with partial or complete structural failure. It is quite convenient to say that during the service life, a structure may experience extreme loading conditions. The current study has proposed a new methodology to cover the effect of uncertainty involved in loading on key structural elements of new and complex structures by emphasizing a very realistic structural capacity loss mechanism that allows the incremental reduction in the structural capacities of pivotal structural elements against any sort of impact loading instead of their complete annihilation. To demonstrate the application of the proposed methodology, a 13-story complex structure was selected that was comprised of a diverse structural configuration. The outcomes and results ensured the structural integrity against the applied loadings, as well as the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Meta-Analysis of Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Mixtures Leads to Practical Mix Design Methodology

Project description:The analysis of hundreds of SFRC mixtures compiled from papers published over the last 20 years is reported. This paper is focused on the relationships between the size and dosage of steel fibers and the relative amounts of the constituents of SFRC mixtures. Multiple linear regression is applied to the statistical modeling of such relationships, leading to four equations that show considerable accuracy and robustness in estimating SFRC mixture proportions as a function of fiber content and dimensions, maximum aggregate size, and water-to-cement ratio. The main trends described by these equations are discussed in detail. The importance of the interactions between aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials, and fibers in proportioning SFRC mixtures, as well as implications for workability and stability, are emphasized. The simplicity of these data-driven equations makes them a valuable tool to guide the proportioning of SFRC mixtures. Their predictive performance when used together as a data-driven mix design methodology is confirmed using a validation dataset.

Non-Destructive Testing for Documenting Properties of Structural Concrete for Reuse in New Buildings: A Review.

Project description:Reuse in new buildings of structural concrete components from demolitions holds the potential for avoiding the use of raw materials to produce new components, including cement for new castings. Reuse rates are high in the circular economy; however, reusing structural components requires documentation of the properties to equate the safety of using reused and new components. Yet, there is no structured or recognized way to perform the documentation. This paper discusses a framework for the documentation requirements for structural concrete, stating the need for documenting the mechanical properties, concrete heterogeneity, and corrosion status of the reinforcement. The possibility is explored for documenting the required properties while the components are in the donor building by use of non-destructive test (NDT) methods. Such use of NDT methods is new. A comprehensive literature survey on the indirect literature, where NDT methods are used to demonstrate similar concrete properties though related to other purposes, is conducted. The overall conclusion is that the use of NDT methods has the potential to document the requested properties before reuse. The next steps towards implementation of NDT for documenting the properties of structural concrete components for reuse involve research in combined NDT methods and the development of AI systems for data interpretation.

Flexural Strengthening of Concrete Slab-Type Elements with Textile Reinforced Concrete.

Project description:This paper deals with flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) slabs with a carbon textile reinforced concrete (TRC) system. The surface coating treatment was applied to a carbon grid-type textile to increase the bond strength. Short fibers were incorporated into the matrix to mitigate the formation of shrinkage-induced cracks. The tensile properties of the TRC system were evaluated by a direct tensile test with a dumbbell-type grip method. The tensile test results indicated that the effect of the surface coating treatment of the textile on the bonding behavior of the textile within the TRC system was significant. Furthermore, the incorporation of short fibers in the matrix was effective to mitigate shrinkage-induced crack formation and to improve the tensile properties of the TRC system. Six full-scale slab specimens were strengthened with the TRC system and, subsequently, failure tested. The ultimate load-carrying capacity of the strengthened slabs was compared with that of an unstrengthened slab as well as the theoretical solutions. The failure test results indicated that the stiffness and the ultimate flexural capacity of the strengthened slab were at least 112% and 165% greater, respectively, than that of the unstrengthened slab. The test results further indicated that the strengthening effect was not linearly proportional to the amount of textile reinforcement.

Mechanical Properties of Chopped Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Lightweight Aggregate Concrete and Chopped Polyacrylonitrile Fiber Reinforced Lightweight Aggregate Concrete.

Project description:In this study, an experimental investigation was conducted on the mechanical properties of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) with different chopped fibers, including basalt fiber (BF) and polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF). The LWAC performance was studied in regard to compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and shear strength at age of 28 days. In addition, the oven-dried density and water absorption were measured as well to confirm whether the specimens match the requirement of standard. In total, seven different mixture groups were designed and approximately 104 LWAC samples were tested. The test results showed that the oven-dried densities of the LWAC mixtures were in range of 1.819-1.844 t/m3 which satisfied the definition of LWAC by Chinese Standard. Additionally, water absorption decreased with the increasing of fiber content. The development tendency of the specific strength of LWAC was the same as that of the cube compressive strength. The addition of fibers had a significant effect on reducing water absorption. Adding BF and PANF into concrete had a relatively slight impact on the compressive strength but had an obvious effect on splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and shear strength enhancement, respectively. In that regard, a 1.5% fiber volume fraction of BF and PANF showed the maximum increase in strength. The use of BF and PANF could change the failure morphologies of splitting tensile and flexural destruction but almost had slight impact on the shear failure morphology. The strength enhancement parameter ? was proposed to quantify the improvement effect of fibers on cube compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and shear strength, respectively. And the calculation results showed good agreement with test value.

Flexural and Shear Tests on Reinforced Concrete Bridge Deck Slab Segments with a Textile-Reinforced Concrete Strengthening Layer.

Project description:Many older bridges feature capacity deficiencies. This is mainly due to changes in code provisions which came along with stricter design rules and increasing traffic, leading to higher loads on the structure. To address capacity deficiencies of bridges, refined structural analyses with more detailed design approaches can be applied. If bridge assessment does not provide sufficient capacity, strengthening can be a pertinent solution to extend the bridge's service lifetime. For numerous cases, applying an extra layer of textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) can be a convenient method to achieve the required resistance. Here, carbon fibre-reinforced polymer reinforcement together with a high-performance mortar was used within the scope of developing a strengthening layer for bridge deck slabs, called SMART-DECK. Due to the high tensile strength of the carbon and its resistance to corrosion, a thin layer with high strength and low additional dead load can be realised. While the strengthening effect of TRC for slabs under flexural loading has already been investigated several times, the presented test programme also covered increase in shear capacity, which is the other crucial failure mode to be considered in design. A total of 14 large-scale tests on TRC-strengthened slab segments were tested under static and cyclic loading. The experimental study revealed high increases in capacity for both bending and shear failure.

Optimization of architectural design and construction with integrated BIM and PLM methodologies.

Project description:Digital transformation in the architecture industry encounters challenges such as data silos within design stages, between design and construction, and across the entire industry chain, including BIM and project management. This study introduces a pioneering approach for seamlessly integrating building information modeling (BIM) and product lifecycle management (PLM) within the management framework and collaborative workflows of architectural design and construction. The proposed methodology was implemented in two major projects, namely, the Wuhan Next-Generation Weather Radar Construction Project and the Hubei Center for Disease Control and Prevention Comprehensive Capacity Enhancement Project (Phase I), with the former being China's first end-to-end digitally integrated construction project. Compared with traditional projects, these implementations achieved improvements of 24.39% and 38.04%, respectively, in objective function values. The findings highlight the unique advantages of BIM-PLM integration in optimizing lifecycle management, enhancing cross-disciplinary, cross-enterprise, and cross-regional collaboration, improving project design efficiency and quality, and reducing costs and waste. This integration provides valuable insights into the digital advancement of the construction industry.

Numerical Mesoscale Analysis of Textile Reinforced Concrete.

Project description:This contribution presents a framework for Numerical Material Testing (NMT) of textile reinforced concrete based on the mesomechanical analysis of a Representative Volume Element (RVE). Hence, the focus of this work is on the construction of a proper RVE representing the dominant mechanical characteristics of Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC). For this purpose, the RVE geometry is derived from the periodic mesostructure. Furthermore, sufficient constitutive models for the individual composite constituents as well as their interfacial interactions are considered, accounting for the particular mechanical properties. The textile yarns are modeled as elastic transversal isotropic unidirectional layers. For the concrete matrix, an advanced gradient enhanced microplane model is utilized considering the complex plasticity and damage behavior at multiaxial loading conditions. The mechanical interactions of the constituents are modeled by an interface formulation considering debonding and friction as well as contact. These individual constitutive models are calibrated by corresponding experimental results. Finally, the damage mechanisms as well as the load bearing behavior of the constructed TRC-RVE are analyzed within an NMT procedure based on a first-order homogenization approach. Moreover, the effective constitutive characteristics of the composite at macroscale are derived. The numerical results are discussed and compared to experimental results.

Shear Strength of Fiber Reinforced Recycled Aggregate Concrete.

Project description:In this paper, shear strength of fiber reinforced recycled concrete was investigated. A Self Consolidated Concrete (SCC) matrix with 100% coarse recycled aggregate and different types of fibers were used in the study. Steel (3D and 5D), synthetic and hybrid fibers with a volume fraction of 0.75% were added to the concrete matrix to prepare eight beams. In addition, two beams were cast without fibers as control specimens. All beams were prepared without shear reinforcement and were tested to evaluate concrete contribution to the shear capacity. In addition, optical images were captured to allow for full-field displacement measurements using Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The results showed about 23.44-64.48% improvement in the average concrete shear capacity for fiber-reinforced beams when compared to that of the control specimens. The percentage improvement was affected by fiber type and the steel fiber beams achieved the best performance. The addition of the fiber delayed the crack initiation and improved the post-cracking and ductile behavior of all beams. Moreover, the experimental results were compared to those predicted by codes and proposed equations found in the literature for concrete strength with and without fibers.
