<i>Neorickettsia risticii</i>, an obligate intracellular bacterium, is the causative agent of Potomac horse fever (PHF). Diagnosis of PHF is based on demonstration of serum antibodies, isolation of <i>N. risticii</i>, and/or detection of nucleic acid by a PCR assay.
