Copper-based metal halides for X-ray and photodetection.

ABSTRACT: Copper-based metal halides have become important materials in the field of X-ray and photodetection due to their excellent optical properties, good environmental stability and low toxicity. This review presents the progress of research on crystal structure/morphology, photophysics/optical properties and applications of copper-based metal halides. We also discuss the challenges of copper-based metal halides with a perspective of their future research directions.

Two-Dimensional Metal Halides for X-Ray Detection Applications.

Project description:Metal halide perovskites have recently emerged as promising candidates for the next generation of X-ray detectors due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Especially, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites afford many distinct properties, including remarkable structural diversity, high generation energy, and balanced large exciton binding energy. With the advantages of 2D materials and perovskites, it successfully reduces the decomposition and phase transition of perovskite and effectively suppresses ion migration. Meanwhile, the existence of a high hydrophobic spacer can block water molecules, thus making 2D perovskite obtain excellent stability. All of these advantages have attracted much attention in the field of X-ray detection. This review introduces the classification of 2D halide perovskites, summarizes the synthesis technology and performance characteristics of 2D perovskite X-ray direct detector, and briefly discusses the application of 2D perovskite in scintillators. Finally, this review also emphasizes the key challenges faced by 2D perovskite X-ray detectors in practical application and presents our views on its future development.

Flexible transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets for band-selective photodetection.

Project description:The photocurrent conversions of transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets are unprecedentedly impressive, making them great candidates for visible range photodetectors. Here we demonstrate a method for fabricating micron-thick, flexible films consisting of a variety of highly separated transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets for excellent band-selective photodetection. Our method is based on the non-destructive modification of transition metal dichalcogenide sheets with amine-terminated polymers. The universal interaction between amine and transition metal resulted in scalable, stable and high concentration dispersions of a single to a few layers of numerous transition metal dichalcogenides. Our MoSe2 and MoS2 composites are highly photoconductive even at bending radii as low as 200 μm on illumination of near infrared and visible light, respectively. More interestingly, simple solution mixing of MoSe2 and MoS2 gives rise to blended composite films in which the photodetection properties were controllable. The MoS2/MoSe2 (5:5) film showed broad range photodetection suitable for both visible and near infrared spectra.

Luminescent Thermochromism of 2D Coordination Polymers Based on Copper(I) Halides with 4-Hydroxythiophenol.

Project description:Solvothermal reactions between copper(I) halides and 4-mercaptophenol give rise to the formation of three coordination polymers with general formula [Cu3 X(HT)2 ]n (X=Cl, 1; Br, 2; and I, 3). The structures of these coordination polymers have been determined by X-ray diffraction at both room- and low temperature (110 K), showing a general shortening in Cu-S, Cu-X and Cu-Cu bond lengths at low temperatures. 1 and 2 are isostructural, consisting of layers in which the halogen ligands act as μ3 -bridges joining two Cu1 and one Cu2 atoms whereas in 3 the iodine ligands is as μ4 -mode but the layers are quasi-isostructural with 1 or 2. These compounds show a reversible thermochromic luminescence, with strong orange emission for 1 and 2, but weaker for 3 at room temperature, whereas upon cooling at 77 K 1 and 2 show stronger yellow emission, and 3 displays stronger green emission. DFT calculations have been used to rationalize these observations. These results suggest a high potential for this novel and promising stimuli-responsive materials.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Cuprous-Based Metal Halides for Warm White Light-Emitting Diodes.

Project description:Single-component emitters with stable and bright warm white-light emission are highly desirable for high-efficacy warm white light-emitting diodes (warm-WLEDs), however, materials with such luminescence properties are extremely rare. Low-dimensional lead (Pb) halide perovskites can achieve warm white photoluminescence (PL), yet they suffer from low stability and PL quantum yield (PLQY). While Pb-free air-stable perovskites such as Cs2 AgInCl6 emit desirable warm white light, sophisticated doping strategies are typically required to increase their PL intensity. Moreover, the use of rare metal-bearing compounds along with the typically required vacuum-based thin-film processing may greatly increase their production cost. Herein, organic-inorganic hybrid cuprous (Cu+ )-based metal halide MA2 CuCl3 (MA = CH3 NH3 + ) that meets the requirements of i) nontoxicity, ii) high PLQY, and iii) dopant-free is presented. Both single crystals and thin films of MA2 CuCl3 can be facilely prepared by a low-cost solution method, which demonstrate bright warm white-light emission with intrinsically high PLQYs of 90-97%. Prototype electroluminescence devices and down-conversion LEDs are fabricated with MA2 CuCl3 thin films and single crystals, respectively, which show bright luminescence with decent efficiencies and operational stability. These findings suggest that MA2 CuCl3 has a great potential for the single-component indoor lighting and display applications.

Band Tailoring Enabled Perovskite Devices for X-Ray to Near-Infrared Photodetection.

Project description:Perovskite semiconductors have shown significant promise for photodetection due to their low effective carrier masses and long carrier lifetimes. However, achieving balanced detection across a broad spectrum-from X-rays to infrared-within a single perovskite photodetector presents challenges. These challenges stem from conflicting requirements for different wavelength ranges, such as the narrow bandgap needed for infrared detection and the low dark current necessary for X-ray sensitivity. To address this, this study have designed a type-II FAPbI3 perovskite-based heterojunction featuring a large energy band offset utilizing narrow bandgap tellurium (Te) semiconductor. This innovative design broadens the detection range into the infrared while simultaneously reducing dark current noise. As-designed device allows for the detection of near infrared band, achieving a detectivity of 6.8 × 109 Jones at 1550 nm. The low dark current enables X-ray sensitivity of up to 1885.1 µC Gy⁻¹ cm⁻2. First-principles calculations confirm the type-II band structure alignment of the heterojunction, and a self-driven response behavior is realized. Moreover, this study have developed a scalable 40 × 1 sensor array, demonstrating the potential for wide-spectrum imaging applications. This work is expected to advance the application of perovskite-based wide-spectrum devices.

NHC-Copper Mediated Ligand-Directed Radiofluorination of Aryl Halides.

Project description:[18F]-labeled aryl fluorides are widely used as radiotracers for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. Aryl halides (ArX) are particularly attractive precursors to these radiotracers, as they are readily available, inexpensive, and stable. However, to date, the direct preparation of [18F]-aryl fluorides from aryl halides remains limited to SNAr reactions between highly activated ArX substrates and K18F. This report describes an aryl halide radiofluorination reaction in which the C(sp2)-18F bond is formed via a copper-mediated pathway. Copper N-heterocyclic carbene complexes serve as mediators for this transformation, using aryl halide substrates with directing groups at the ortho position. This reaction is applied to the radiofluorination of electronically diverse aryl halide derivatives, including the bioactive molecules vismodegib and PH089.

Mid-infrared photodetection with 2D metal halide perovskites at ambient temperature.

Project description:The detection of mid-infrared (MIR) light is technologically important for applications such as night vision, imaging, sensing, and thermal metrology. Traditional MIR photodetectors either require cryogenic cooling or have sophisticated device structures involving complex nanofabrication. Here, we conceive spectrally tunable MIR detection by using two-dimensional metal halide perovskites (2D-MHPs) as the critical building block. Leveraging the ultralow cross-plane thermal conductivity and strong temperature-dependent excitonic resonances of 2D-MHPs, we demonstrate ambient-temperature, all-optical detection of MIR light with sensitivity down to 1 nanowatt per square micrometer, using plastic substrates. Through the adoption of membrane-based structures and a photonic enhancement strategy unique to our all-optical detection modality, we further improved the sensitivity to sub-10 picowatt-per-square-micrometer levels. The detection covers the mid-wave infrared regime from 2 to 4.5 micrometers and extends to the long-wave infrared wavelength at 10.6 micrometers, with wavelength-independent sensitivity response. Our work opens a pathway to alternative types of solution-processable, long-wavelength thermal detectors for molecular sensing, environmental monitoring, and thermal imaging.

Ultra-Broad Emission Copper Halide Scintillator-Based X-Ray Imager.

Project description:Lead-free metal-halide scintillators are gaining considerable attention as more eco-friendly and superior alternatives to their lead-based counterparts. However, novel broad-emission band scintillators like the state-of-the-art CsI: Tl scintillator, which can generate high signals due to its strong compatibility with the spectral responsivity of regular photodiode arrays, are still less investigated. Herein, a TPA2Cu2I4 (TPACI) copper halide scintillator with a unique ultra-broad emission (FWHM > 240 nm) is developed, which shows universal compatibility with the peak response range of commercial photodetector. The optical properties characterization and mechanism analysis indicates that this ultra-broad spectrum can be attributed to the dual self-trapped exciton (STE) emission consisting of two emission bands. Benefiting from the large Stokes shift and ultra-broad emission band enabled by the dual STE, the self-absorption-free TPACI scintillator exhibits efficient white light emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yields of 94.27%, a high light yield of ≈40124 photons MeV-1. Moreover, a prototype of a TPACI scintillator-based X-ray imager is assembled for inspecting the internal structures of biological and electronic devices, which demonstrated a high resolution of 5.5 lp mm-1 at modulation transfer function = 0.2. These findings provide insights into the design of efficient, broad-emission scintillators for high-resolution X-ray imaging.

Why halides enhance heterogeneous metal ion charge transfer reactions.

Project description:The reaction kinetics of many metal redox couples on electrode surfaces are enhanced in the presence of halides (i.e., Cl-, Br-, I-). Using first-principles metadynamics simulations, we show a correlation between calculated desorption barriers of V3+-anion complexes bound to graphite via an inner-sphere anion bridge and experimental V2+/V3+ kinetic measurements on edge plane pyrolytic graphite in H2SO4, HCl, and HI. We extend this analysis to V2+/V3+, Cr2+/Cr3+, and Cd0/Cd2+ reactions on a mercury electrode and demonstrate that reported kinetics in acidic electrolytes for these redox couples also correlate with the predicted desorption barriers of metal-anion complexes. Therefore, the desorption barrier of the metal-anion surface intermediate is a descriptor of kinetics for many metal redox couple/electrode combinations in the presence of halides. Knowledge of the metal-anion surface intermediates can guide the design of electrolytes and electrocatalysts with faster kinetics for redox reactions of relevance to energy and environmental applications.
