Is Corporate Social Responsibility investing a free lunch? The relationship between ESG, tail risk, and upside potential of stocks before and during the COVID-19 crisis.

ABSTRACT: Did Corporate Social Responsibility investing benefit shareholders during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis? Distinguishing between downside tail risk and upside reward potential of stock returns, we provide evidence from 5,073 stocks listed on stock markets in ten countries. The findings suggest that better ESG ratings are associated with lower downside risk, but also with lower upside return potential. Thus, ESG ratings helped investors to reduce their risk exposure to the market turmoil caused by the pandemic, while maintaining the fundamental trade-off between risk and reward.

COVID-19, ESG investing, and the resilience of more sustainable stocks: Evidence from European firms.

Project description:Following the COVID-19 outbreak, orientation toward sustainability is a critical factor in ensuring firm survival and growth. Using a large sample of 1,204 firms in Europe during the year 2020, this study investigates how more sustainable firms fare during the pandemic compared with other firms in terms of risk-return trade-off and stock market liquidity. We also highlight the drivers of the resilience of more sustainable firms to the pandemic. Particularly, we document that higher levels of cash holdings and liquid assets in the pre-COVID period help these firms to perform and absorb the COVID-19 externalities better than other firms. Our results are robust to a host of econometric models, including GMM estimations and several measures of stock market performance. These findings contribute to the theoretical and empirical debate on the role of the sustainability as a source of corporate resilience to unexpected shocks.

Senior executive characteristics: Impact on ESG practices and corporate valuation relationship.

Project description:In recent years, sustainable development and green growth and performance of companies in environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) has received widespread attention from all sectors of society. Based on panel data of A-share listed companies in China from 2009 to 2022, this study employs a two-way fixed effects model to explore the mechanism of the relationship between ESG practices and corporate value, as well as the moderating effect of executive characteristics within this relationship. The results indicate a robust positive relationship between ESG practices and corporate value. ‎However, this relationship is moderated by the academic backgrounds of senior ‎executives, who negatively influence it, and by male executives, who exert a positive ‎moderating effect. Furthermore, this study reveals the variable impacts of ESG practices in different corporate ‎settings, industries, and institutional frameworks. Moreover, it demonstrates how ESG practices ‎boost corporate value through an enhanced reputation and increased government innovation ‎subsidies. It offers new insights on the strategic value of ESG for corporations and ‎policymakers. It also extends the theoretical framework by integrating attention-based and upper ‎echelons perspectives into the ESG discourse. ‎.

Can network attention effectively stimulate corporate ESG practices?-Evidence from China.

Project description:Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) has emerged as a widespread concern for all societal segments. This study aims to explore the influence of network attention on corporate ESG practices from an investor perspective. We find that rising network attention significantly increases corporate ESG practices. Specifically, network attention plays the role of external monitoring, image promotion incentives, and mitigation of financing constraints to make companies willing to challenge ESG practices. Additionally, the promoting effect of network attention on firms' ESG practices was more significant in higher marketization processes, severely competitive industries, and non-state enterprises. In the internet era, companies must pay attention to the flow effect caused by network attention, meet stakeholder demands, and pursue long-term sustainable development.

Green R & D investment, ESG reporting, and corporate green innovation performance.

Project description:Given the contradictory empirical evidence on the relationship between green R&D expenditure and corporate Green Innovation performance (GIP), The present research study is a distinctive investigation into the moderating impacts of ESG reporting on this relationship. We utilized a data collection of 3,846, firm-year observations of A-share listed firms in China from 2016 to 2022 from CSMAR and Bloomberg databases. The firm's Corporate GIP is assessed and measured by looking at the total quantity of green patents. Lastly, models with multiple regression analyses and fixed effects were employed. The findings show that ESG reporting has a positive and significant impact on the association between corporate GIP and green R&D expenditure, implying its compensating and supportive function in the form of green signals in green outputs. This research could help executives and lawmakers, especially in developing countries to build innovative environmental strategies for business sustainability.

Evidence in Asian Food Industry: Intellectual Capital, Corporate Financial Performance, and Corporate Social Responsibility.

Project description:Intellectual capital (IC) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) provide a strong link between the enterprise and stakeholders. These strategic approaches are responsible in value formation for better financial performance. This study investigates the mediating effects of corporate financial performance on the relationship between IC components (ICs) and CSR of firms from the food industry in Asia. We analyzed 308 firm-year observations of 44 listed firms from 2011 to 2017. The results of this study provided mixed findings regarding the effects of ICs and CSR. In addition, results vary from the disaggregated effects of each IC component on environmental, social, and governance pillars. The results also indicate that the combination of accounting and market-based estimates of financial performance was found to be significant mediating factor to explain the phenomenon which varies per ICs and dimensions of CSR. Lastly, the implications for sustainable business practices and investments in knowledge-based resources in the food industry are elaborated.

Corporate social responsibility and corporate financialization-Based on information effect and reputation insurance effect.

Project description:China has witnessed the trend of corporate financialization (CF) with some potential risks as the economy slows down its pace in the past decade. In this paper, we explore whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) could work as an information channel to restrain CF or as reputation insurance to promote CF. We find a significant positive relation between CSR and CF, especially for non-SOEs and enterprises with low ownership concentration and high CSR scores. It verifies that the reputation insurance effect by CSR outweighs the information effect and denies the opposite. The results prove robust in tests including sensitivity and endogeneity test. By expanding the scale and adding new aspects to the discussion about how CSR affects CF, this paper provides valuable empirical support to both theorists and practitioners.

Which institutional investors can improve the level of corporate ESG information disclosure?

Project description:The inconsistency of existing findings on the relationship between institutional investors' shareholdings and the level of corporate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) disclosure may lie in the insufficient consideration of the heterogeneity of institutional investors and investee firms. In this paper, from the perspective of institutional investor heterogeneity, we use a two-way fixed effects model to examine the impact of institutional investors on corporate ESG disclosure and the possible mechanism of this impact using a sample of Chinese A-share-listed firms from 2012 to 2020. We show that institutional investor shareholding can improve the level of corporate ESG information disclosure by enhancing auditor supervision and analyst attention to these external supervision. In terms of institutional investor heterogeneity, it is found that independent institutional investors and stable institutional investors play a stronger role in promoting the level of ESG information disclosure. Moreover, the positive net effect of the institutional investors on improving the level of ESG information disclosure is more pronounced in non-heavily polluting industries and state-owned enterprises. This paper enriches the impact of institutional investors' shareholding on corporate ESG disclosure from a heterogeneity perspective.

The effect of political turnover on corporate ESG performance: Evidence from China.

Project description:This paper aims to investigate the effect of political turnover on corporate ESG performance in China. By analyzing data from Chinese A-share-listed companies between 2010 and 2020, we have discovered that changes in the municipal party committee secretary or the mayor of the prefecture-level city where a firm is located have a detrimental effect on corporate ESG performance. Compared with the change of the party committee, the change of mayor has a more pronounced negative impact on ESG performance. The reason behind this negative effect is primarily attributed to policy uncertainty, which leads to a decrease in governmental subsidies and an increase in ineffective under-investment by companies, consequently resulting in decreased corporate ESG performance. Furthermore, we have also observed that the adverse influence of political turnover on corporate ESG performance is relatively mitigated in SOEs, politically connected firms, and tertiary industries. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between political uncertainty and corporate behavior, particularly in emerging markets.

Corporate social responsibility, debt financing cost and enterprise innovation.

Project description:Based on the data of A-share listed companies in China from 2016 to 2020, this study empirically analyzes the relationship among corporate social responsibility, debt financing cost and enterprise innovation by constructing a regulated mediation effect model. The results show that enterprises perform social responsibility actively can enhance the level of enterprise innovation. Besides, debt financing cost plays a part of the intermediary role between corporate social responsibility and enterprise innovation. It is found that market competition degree positively regulates the relationship between corporate social responsibility and enterprise innovation, and market competition degree strengthens the part of the intermediary effect of debt financing cost. The conclusions not only help to reveal the impact mechanism of corporate social responsibility on enterprise innovation, but also provide empirical evidence for promoting enterprises to actively assume social responsibility, improve the level of innovation, and provide empirical evidence for the government to formulate corresponding policies according to the degree of competition in different markets.

Perception of Corporate Hypocrisy in China: The Roles of Corporate Social Responsibility Implementation and Communication.

Project description:In the past two decades, corporate hypocrisy has become a phenomenon that cannot be ignored in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practice (Wagner et al., 2009) and has thus become a concern for management scholars (Cho and Lee, 2019). Using smartPLS, based on attribution theory, this paper takes 28 Chinese listed enterprises as examples to explore the influence of CSR motivation on its communication and implementation, as well as the impact of CSR implementation and promotion on consumers' perception of corporate hypocrisy. The research finds a negative correlation between value-driven motivation and corporate hypocrisy and a positive correlation of performance-driven motivation and stakeholder-driven motivation with corporate hypocrisy. The theoretical contribution of this paper is mainly reflected in the following four aspects. (1) It describes the scale of CSR implementation research and enriches the measurement tools of CSR implementation. (2) It enriches and expands research results in the field of CSR motivation perception. From the perspective of CSR and attribution theory, this study explores the influence of consumers' perception of CSR motivation on CSR communication and CSR implementation. (3) It supplements research results in the field of corporate hypocrisy. The influence of CSR communication and CSR implementation on corporate hypocrisy is clarified. (4) It clarifies the impact of CSR communication on CSR implementation so as to help enterprises better match CSR communication strategy and CSR implementation in practice and reduce consumers' perception of corporate hypocrisy. It is suggested that enterprises find their own positioning on CSR motivation, which provides a reference with which enterprises can make better decisions on CSR communication strategy after implementing CSR behavior and provides empirical evidence for the research on CSR motivation perception and corporate hypocrisy in China.
