Project description:An active-matrix electrowetting-on-dielectric (AM-EWOD) system integrates hundreds of thousands of active electrodes for sample droplet manipulation, which can enable simultaneous, automatic, and parallel on-chip biochemical reactions. A smart detection system is essential for ensuring a fully automatic workflow and online programming for the subsequent experimental steps. In this work, we demonstrated an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled multipurpose smart detection method in an AM-EWOD system for different tasks. We employed the U-Net model to quantitatively evaluate the uniformity of the applied droplet-splitting methods. We used the YOLOv8 model to monitor the droplet-splitting process online. A 97.76% splitting success rate was observed with 18 different AM-EWOD chips. A 99.982% model precision rate and a 99.980% model recall rate were manually verified. We employed an improved YOLOv8 model to detect single-cell samples in nanolitre droplets. Compared with manual verification, the model achieved 99.260% and 99.193% precision and recall rates, respectively. In addition, single-cell droplet sorting and routing experiments were demonstrated. With an AI-based smart detection system, AM-EWOD has shown great potential for use as a ubiquitous platform for implementing true lab-on-a-chip applications.

Project description:BackgroundThe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic led to substantial public discussion. Understanding these discussions can help institutions, governments, and individuals navigate the pandemic.ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to analyze discussions on Twitter related to COVID-19 and to investigate the sentiments toward COVID-19.MethodsThis study applied machine learning methods in the field of artificial intelligence to analyze data collected from Twitter. Using tweets originating exclusively in the United States and written in English during the 1-month period from March 20 to April 19, 2020, the study examined COVID-19-related discussions. Social network and sentiment analyses were also conducted to determine the social network of dominant topics and whether the tweets expressed positive, neutral, or negative sentiments. Geographic analysis of the tweets was also conducted.ResultsThere were a total of 14,180,603 likes, 863,411 replies, 3,087,812 retweets, and 641,381 mentions in tweets during the study timeframe. Out of 902,138 tweets analyzed, sentiment analysis classified 434,254 (48.2%) tweets as having a positive sentiment, 187,042 (20.7%) as neutral, and 280,842 (31.1%) as negative. The study identified 5 dominant themes among COVID-19-related tweets: health care environment, emotional support, business economy, social change, and psychological stress. Alaska, Wyoming, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Florida were the states expressing the most negative sentiment while Vermont, North Dakota, Utah, Colorado, Tennessee, and North Carolina conveyed the most positive sentiment.ConclusionsThis study identified 5 prevalent themes of COVID-19 discussion with sentiments ranging from positive to negative. These themes and sentiments can clarify the public's response to COVID-19 and help officials navigate the pandemic.

Project description:BackgroundIn December 2019, COVID-19 broke out in Wuhan, China, leading to national and international disruptions in health care, business, education, transportation, and nearly every aspect of our daily lives. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been leveraged amid the COVID-19 pandemic; however, little is known about its use for supporting public health efforts.ObjectiveThis scoping review aims to explore how AI technology is being used during the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported in the literature. Thus, it is the first review that describes and summarizes features of the identified AI techniques and data sets used for their development and validation.MethodsA scoping review was conducted following the guidelines of PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews). We searched the most commonly used electronic databases (eg, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycInfo) between April 10 and 12, 2020. These terms were selected based on the target intervention (ie, AI) and the target disease (ie, COVID-19). Two reviewers independently conducted study selection and data extraction. A narrative approach was used to synthesize the extracted data.ResultsWe considered 82 studies out of the 435 retrieved studies. The most common use of AI was diagnosing COVID-19 cases based on various indicators. AI was also employed in drug and vaccine discovery or repurposing and for assessing their safety. Further, the included studies used AI for forecasting the epidemic development of COVID-19 and predicting its potential hosts and reservoirs. Researchers used AI for patient outcome-related tasks such as assessing the severity of COVID-19, predicting mortality risk, its associated factors, and the length of hospital stay. AI was used for infodemiology to raise awareness to use water, sanitation, and hygiene. The most prominent AI technique used was convolutional neural network, followed by support vector machine.ConclusionsThe included studies showed that AI has the potential to fight against COVID-19. However, many of the proposed methods are not yet clinically accepted. Thus, the most rewarding research will be on methods promising value beyond COVID-19. More efforts are needed for developing standardized reporting protocols or guidelines for studies on AI.

Project description:In late December 2019, a new type of coronavirus was discovered, which was later named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2). Since its discovery, the virus has spread globally, with 2,975,875 deaths as of 15 April 2021, and has had a huge impact on our health systems and economy. How to suppress the continued spread of new coronary pneumonia is the main task of many scientists and researchers. The introduction of artificial intelligence technology has provided a huge contribution to the suppression of the new coronavirus. This article discusses the main application of artificial intelligence technology in the suppression of coronavirus from three major aspects of identification, prediction, and development through a large amount of literature research, and puts forward the current main challenges and possible development directions. The results show that it is an effective measure to combine artificial intelligence technology with a variety of new technologies to predict and identify COVID-19 patients.

Project description:We propose a new type of supervised visual machine learning classifier, GSNAc, based on graph theory and social network analysis techniques. In a previous study, we employed social network analysis techniques and introduced a novel classification model (called Social Network Analysis-based Classifier-SNAc) which efficiently works with time-series numerical datasets. In this study, we have extended SNAc to work with any type of tabular data by showing its classification efficiency on a broader collection of datasets that may contain numerical and categorical features. This version of GSNAc simply works by transforming traditional tabular data into a network where samples of the tabular dataset are represented as nodes and similarities between the samples are reflected as edges connecting the corresponding nodes. The raw network graph is further simplified and enriched by its edge space to extract a visualizable 'graph classifier model-GCM'. The concept of the GSNAc classification model relies on the study of node similarities over network graphs. In the prediction step, the GSNAc model maps test nodes into GCM, and evaluates their average similarity to classes by employing vectorial and topological metrics. The novel side of this research lies in transforming multidimensional data into a 2D visualizable domain. This is realized by converting a conventional dataset into a network of 'samples' and predicting classes after a careful and detailed network analysis. We exhibit the classification performance of GSNAc as an effective classifier by comparing it with several well-established machine learning classifiers using some popular benchmark datasets. GSNAc has demonstrated superior or comparable performance compared to other classifiers. Additionally, it introduces a visually comprehensible process for the benefit of end-users. As a result, the spin-off contribution of GSNAc lies in the interpretability of the prediction task since the process is human-comprehensible; and it is highly visual.

Project description:This work explores an intelligent field irrigation warning system based on the Enhanced Genetic Algorithm-Backpropagation Neural Network (EGA-BPNN) model in the context of smart agriculture. To achieve this, irrigation flow prediction in agricultural fields is chosen as the research topic. Firstly, the BPNN principles are studied, revealing issues such as sensitivity to initial values, susceptibility to local optima, and sample dependency. To address these problems, a genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted for optimizing the BPNN, and the EGA-BPNN model is used to predict irrigation flow in agricultural fields. Secondly, the EGA-BPNN model can overcome the local optimization and overfitting problems of traditional BPNN through the global search ability of GA. Moreover, it is suitable for the irrigation flow prediction task with complex environmental factors in smart agriculture. Finally, comparative experiments compare the prediction accuracy of BPNN and EGA-BPNN using single and dual water level flow prediction models respectively. The results reveal that as the number of nodes in the hidden layer increases, the model's Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Relative Error (RE) show a decreasing trend, indicating an improvement in model prediction accuracy. When the number of nodes in the hidden layer increases from 6 to 16, the MSE of the single and dual water level flow prediction models decreases from 4.53×10-4 to 3.68×10-4 and 2.38×10-4 to 1.66×10-4, respectively. Under a standalone BPNN, the absolute relative error in flow prediction is 1.09%. In contrast, the EGA-BPNN model achieves a significantly lower mean absolute relative error of 0.41% for single-flow prediction, demonstrating superior prediction performance. Furthermore, compared to the BPNN, the EGA-BPNN model exhibits a 2.11 reduction in MSE, further emphasizing the positive impact of introducing the GA on model performance. The research outcomes contribute to more accurate water resource planning and management, providing a more reliable basis for decision-making.

Project description:BackgroundPortable retinal cameras and deep learning (DL) algorithms are novel tools adopted by diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening programs. Our objective is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a DL algorithm and the performance of portable handheld retinal cameras in the detection of DR in a large and heterogenous type 2 diabetes population in a real-world, high burden setting.MethodParticipants underwent fundus photographs of both eyes with a portable retinal camera (Phelcom Eyer). Classification of DR was performed by human reading and a DL algorithm (PhelcomNet), consisting of a convolutional neural network trained on a dataset of fundus images captured exclusively with the portable device; both methods were compared. We calculated the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity for more than mild DR.ResultsA total of 824 individuals with type 2 diabetes were enrolled at Itabuna Diabetes Campaign, a subset of 679 (82.4%) of whom could be fully assessed. The algorithm sensitivity/specificity was 97.8 % (95% CI 96.7-98.9)/61.4 % (95% CI 57.7-65.1); AUC was 0·89. All false negative cases were classified as moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) by human grading.ConclusionsThe DL algorithm reached a good diagnostic accuracy for more than mild DR in a real-world, high burden setting. The performance of the handheld portable retinal camera was adequate, with over 80% of individuals presenting with images of sufficient quality. Portable devices and artificial intelligence tools may increase coverage of DR screening programs.

Project description:BackgroundThe environment has been significantly impacted by rapid urbanization, leading to a need for changes in climate change and pollution indicators. The 4IR offers a potential solution to efficiently manage these impacts. Smart city ecosystems can provide well-designed, sustainable, and safe cities that enable holistic climate change and global warming solutions through various community-centred initiatives. These include smart planning techniques, smart environment monitoring, and smart governance. An air quality intelligence platform, which operates as a complete measurement site for monitoring and governing air quality, has shown promising results in providing actionable insights. This article aims to highlight the potential of machine learning models in predicting air quality, providing data-driven strategic and sustainable solutions for smart cities.MethodsThis study proposed an end-to-end air quality predictive model for smart city applications, utilizing four machine learning techniques and two deep learning techniques. These include Ada Boost, SVR, RF, KNN, MLP regressor and LSTM. The study was conducted in four different urban cities in Selangor, Malaysia, including Petaling Jaya, Banting, Klang, and Shah Alam. The model considered the air quality data of various pollution markers such as PM2.5, PM10, O3, and CO. Additionally, meteorological data including wind speed and wind direction were also considered, and their interactions with the pollutant markers were quantified. The study aimed to determine the correlation variance of the dependent variable in predicting air pollution and proposed a feature optimization process to reduce dimensionality and remove irrelevant features to enhance the prediction of PM2.5, improving the existing LSTM model. The study estimates the concentration of pollutants in the air based on training and highlights the contribution of feature optimization in air quality predictions through feature dimension reductions.ResultsIn this section, the results of predicting the concentration of pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, O3, and CO) in the air are presented in R2 and RMSE. In predicting the PM10 and PM2.5concentration, LSTM performed the best overall high R2values in the four study areas with the R2 values of 0.998, 0.995, 0.918, and 0.993 in Banting, Petaling, Klang and Shah Alam stations, respectively. The study indicated that among the studied pollution markers, PM2.5,PM10, NO2, wind speed and humidity are the most important elements to monitor. By reducing the number of features used in the model the proposed feature optimization process can make the model more interpretable and provide insights into the most critical factor affecting air quality. Findings from this study can aid policymakers in understanding the underlying causes of air pollution and develop more effective smart strategies for reducing pollution levels.

Project description:In the context of smart health, the use of wearable Internet of Things (IoT) devices is becoming increasingly popular to monitor and manage patients' health conditions in a more efficient and personalized way. However, choosing the most suitable artificial intelligence (AI) methodology to analyze the data collected by these devices is crucial to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of smart healthcare applications. Additionally, protecting the privacy and security of health data is an area of growing concern, given the sensitivity and personal nature of such information. In this context, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) are emerging as successful technologies because they are suitable for application to advanced analysis and prediction of healthcare scenarios. Therefore, the objective of this work is to contribute to the current state of the literature by identifying challenges, best practices, and future opportunities in the field of smart health. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the AI methodologies used, the neural network architectures adopted, and the algorithms employed, as well as examine the privacy and security issues related to the management of health data collected by wearable IoT devices. Through this systematic review, we aim to offer practical guidelines for the design, development, and implementation of AI solutions in smart health, to improve the quality of care provided and promote patient well-being. To pursue our goal, several articles focusing on ML or DL network architectures were selected and reviewed. The final discussion highlights research gaps yet to be investigated, as well as the drawbacks and vulnerabilities of existing IoT applications in smart healthcare.
