COVID-19-related attitude and risk perception among pregnant women attending antenatal care, and the associated factors, at public health facilities of East Gojjam Zone, Ethiopia, 2020: a multi-center cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT:

Aim

This study aimed to assess COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019)-related attitude and risk perception among pregnant women attending antenatal care, and the associated factors, at public health facilities of the East Gojjam Zone, Ethiopia.

Subjects and methods

A multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted, from December 1-30, 2020. A total of 847 pregnant women were included in the study using a simple random sampling technique. To collect the data, we used an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Bi-variable and multi-variable logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with pregnancy-related anxiety. A p-value of < 0.05 with a 95% confidence level was used to declare statistical significance.

Results

The magnitude of COVID-19-related positive attitude and high-level risk perception among pregnant women was 51.12% and 37.2% respectively. Having adequate knowledge [AOR: 2.09, 95% CI = (1.49-2.95)], ≥ 3 ANC visits [AOR: 1.43, 95% CI = 1.0-1.98], and a low level of risk perception [AOR: 6.27, 95% CI = (4.42-8.89)] were factors associated with a positive attitude of pregnant women with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic. Being urban residents [AOR: 2.24, 95% CI: 1.6-3.10], having wanted pregnancy [AOR: 3.35, 95% CI: 1.18-9.49], having a negative attitude [AOR: 6.21, 95% CI: 4.43-8.70], and a complicated pregnancy [AOR: 1.67, 95% CI: 1.02--2.75] were factors significantly associated with risk perception of pregnant women with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conclusions

Despite its high fatality, COVID-19 pandemic-related attitude and risk perception among pregnant women were low. As a result, health caregivers and other concerned bodies should consider interventions to improve pregnant women's risk perception and attitude during antenatal care and through various community information platforms.

Project description:BackgroundAntenatal depression is a serious health problem and has negative consequences for the mother, fetus, and the entire family. However, it is a neglected component of care especially bay health care providers for women in pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of depression and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in public health institutions, in the Awabale Woreda.MethodAn institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 2018 and a stratified sampling technique was used to select the study health institutions. All seven public health institutions in Awabale District were included to select 393 mothers and the sample size was proportionally allocated based on the number of target mothers. We used EpiData version 3.1software for data entry and SPSS version 20 software for cleaning and analysis. A Bivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association between each outcome variable and the factor. Again, a multivariable logistic regression analysis was employed to identify factors associated with each outcome variable, and variables with a p-value less than 0.05 were taken as significant variables. Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used to declare the presence of antenatal depression with a cut point score of 13 and above.ResultThis study showed that 63(17.8%) pregnant mothers had antenatal depressive symptoms. Women who were employed 85% reduced to develop antenatal depression than housewives [AOR = 0.15(0.001-0.25)]. Pregnant women who attended high school and above educational level were 18 times more likely to develop antenatal depression than women who had no formal education [AOR18.15 (2.73-120.76)]. Women who had poor husband feeling on the current pregnancy were 4.94 more likely to develop antenatal depression than women who had good partner feeling on the current pregnancy [AOR = 4.94(95%CI: 1.78-13.72)]. Women who had a history of depression were 8.2 times to develop antenatal depression than women who had no history of depression [AOR = 8.22 (95%CI: 2.87-23.57)].ConclusionThis study revealed that approximately one-fifth of pregnant women developed antenatal depression. Women's occupational status, educational status, previous history of depression, and poor husband feeling on the current pregnancy were the significant factors of antenatal depression.

Project description:BackgroundZinc is an essential mineral known to be important for the normal physiological functions of the immune system. It is one of the basic nutrients required during pregnancy for the normal development and growth of the fetus. However, Zinc deficiency during pregnancy causes irreversible effects on the newborn such as growth impairment, spontaneous abortion, congenital malformations and poor birth outcomes. Even though, the effect of Zinc deficiency is devastating during pregnancy, there is scarcity of evidence on Zinc deficiency and related factors among pregnant women in the current study area.ObjectiveTo assess Zinc deficiency and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in public health facilities of Konso Zone, Southern Ethiopia.MethodsInstitution based cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected 424 pregnant mothers. Data were collected using pre tested questionnaire (for interview part), and 5 blood sample was drawn for serum zinc level determination. Data were entered to Epi-Data version 3.1 software and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Binary logistic regression analysis was computed and independent variables with a p-value ≤ 0.25 were included in multivariable analysis. Serum zinc level was determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy by applying clean and standard procedures in the laboratory. Finally adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence level, P-value < 0.05 was used to identify significant factors for Zinc deficiency.ResultThe prevalence of Zinc deficiency was found to be 128 (30.26%) with the mean serum zinc level of 0.56±0.12 g/dl. Age, 25-34 years [AOR 2.14 (1.19,3.82)], and 35-49 years [AOR 2.59 (1.15, 5.85)], type of occupation, farming [AOR 6.17 (1.36, 28.06)], lack of antenatal follow up during pregnancy [AOR 3.57 (1.05,12.14)], lack of freedom to purchase food items from market [AOR 3.61 (1.27, 10.27)], and inadequate knowledge on nutrition [AOR 3.10(1.58, 6.08)] were factors associated with Zinc deficiency.ConclusionZinc deficiency is a public health problem among pregnant mothers in the current study area. Improving maternal nutritional knowledge, motivating to have frequent antenatal follow up, and empowering to have financial freedom to purchase food items from market were the modifiable factors to reduce Zinc deficiency. Nutritional intervention that focused on improving nutritional knowledge and insuring access to Zinc sources food items should be delivered for pregnant mothers.

Project description:Obstetric danger signs are not the literal obstetric complications, merely symptoms that are well named by non-clinical personnel. The identification of these danger signs and its relation with complications during pregnancy would increase the capacity of women, their partners and families to seek for timely health care, following the appropriate steps to insure a safe birth and post-partum. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of obstetric danger signs and associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Yirgacheffe town, Gedeo zone, Southern Ethiopia.Institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 15-April 15, 2016. Data on pregnant women were collected using a pre-tested and interviewer administered structured questionnaire from 342 women using systematic random sampling technique. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression was performed using SPSS version 20.0 software.A total of 342 (90%) pregnant women were included in the study. The level of obstetric knowledge of danger signs was 21.9% (95% CI: 20.2-55.65%). Maternal education (AOR = 0.26, CI: 0.08, 0.88), paternal education (AOR = 0.13, CI; 0.04, 04) and time taken to reach health facilities on foot (AOR = 0.06, CI: 0.02, 0.17) were negatively associated factors while maternal age (AOR = 3.68, CI: 1.30, 10.46), paternal occupation (AOR = 4.65, CI: 1.82, 11.87), place of residence (AOR = 2.61, CI: 1.35, 5.04) were positively associated factors with knowledge of obstetric danger signs.Maternal and paternal education, maternal age, paternal occupation, place of residence and time taken to reach health facility on foot were the main factors for knowledge of obstetric danger signs. Increasing knowledge of key danger signs, creating and promoting income generating mechanisms need to be continuously done at the health facility and the community as it makes ready women and their families for prompt and appropriate decisions and measures in case of obstetric danger signs.

Project description:BackgroundVaccine is the cost-effective and reliable public health intervention to combat the emerging COVID-19 pandemic. The vaccination is considered safe and effective at any stage of pregnancy; however, pregnant women show more vaccine hesitation than the general population. This study aims to assess pregnant women's awareness, perception, and acceptability of COVID-19 vaccine attending antenatal clinics.MethodsAn institutional-based cross-sectional analytical study design was used to assess the acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine and associated factors among pregnant women between Feb-1 to March-30-2022 at antenatal clinics of Bharatpur Chitwan using systematic random sampling. A semi-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from 644 respondents. Collected data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics like the Pearson chi-square test and logistic regression analysis.ResultsThe COVID-19 vaccine acceptance was found to be 22% and ethnicity (AOR = 1.826; 95% CI = 1.215-2.745), education level (AOR = 1.773; 95%CI = 1.025-3,068;), history of COVID-19 infection (AOR = 3.63; 95% CI = 1.323-9.956;), number of child (AOR = 5.021; 95% CI 1.989-12.677;), trimester (week of pregnancy) (AOR = 2.437; 95% CI 1.107-5.366) and level of perception (AOR = 2.152; 95% CI 1.109-4.178) were found to be statistically significant for acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine among pregnant mother.ConclusionsIn this study, low levels of vaccine acceptance were found. Several influential factors like occupation, history of COVID-19 infection, number of pregnancies, week of gestation, and level of attitude were found to be significant for acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine among pregnant women. Everyone needs vaccine acceptance to get herd immunity and reduce the COVID-19 infection. But Vaccine hesitancy is one of the significant threats to the COVID-19 rollout and successful pandemic mitigation. Therefore, properly disseminating information and removing misperceptions about the COVID-19 vaccine is necessary to raise the acceptance.

Project description:Background: Antenatal care (ANC) services provide access to integrated health management for several pregnancy related conditions. Unfortunately, deaf pregnant women remain vulnerable during pregnancy due to lack of access as well as communication barriers at antenatal clinics in Nigeria. Objective: The primary aim of this study was to explore the experiences and satisfaction of pregnant deaf women with antenatal care in Nigeria. Methods: This was a qualitative study, conducted among nine deaf pregnant women from two local government areas, attending both private and public health facilities for antenatal care in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Data were collected using semi-structured, video recorded one-on-one interviews, with sign language as the medium of communication. The interviews were conducted until saturation of the themes was reached. The recorded interviews were precisely transcribed and thematic analyses were conducted on the data obtained. Findings: The mean age of the participants was 29.5 years. Participants indicated that they had registered/booked for antenatal care in their second trimester. Registration at this stage was regarded as late registration of the pregnancies. Communication difficulties during their ANC (antenatal care) visits, distance and location of the clinics, knowledge and perception of what ANC entailed, finance/cost, and health care professionals’ attitudes towards the participants were the major themes identified for late ANC bookings. Participants who attended privately owned health care facilities for ANC had more satisfaction with ANC care than those attending publicly owned health facilities. Conclusions: Deaf pregnant women were knowledgeable about ANC but registered late for the service, largely due to communication difficulties, distance to the clinic, cost, and the perceived attitudes of the health care workers. There existed a variance in the level of satisfaction of deaf pregnant women who attended private or public health facilities.
