Plasma elaidic acid level is associated with periodontal health in American adults: A cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Whether there is an association between TFAs and periodontitis is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between moderate/severe periodontitis and plasma level of elaidic acid, a major trans-fatty acid component, in American adults.

Methods

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) years 2009-2010 were used to screen a total of 1,610 people. The independent variable of interest is plasma elaidic acid level, the dependent variable is periodontitis, and the covariates include socio-demographic variables, lifestyle variables, systemic diseases, etc. The distribution of variables in the covariate differences between the different independent groups according to tertile was investigated using a multiple linear regression model. To examine the association between plasma elaidic acid levels and moderate/severe periodontitis, three models were used.

Results

Multiple logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between plasma elaidic acid level and moderate/severe periodontitis after adjustment for potential confounders (OR = 1.021, 95%CI: 1.004-1.039, P = 0.01394). Subjects with the highest tertile of plasma elaidic acid levels were 51.9% more likely to have periodontitis compared with subjects with the lowest tertile of plasma elaidic acid levels (OR = 1.519, 95% CI: 1.136-2.030, P = 0.00477). No possible sources of heterogeneity were identified in the subgroup analyses.

Conclusion

Plasma elaidic acid levels are associated with periodontal disease in American adults.

Project description:ObjectiveThe muscle quality index (MQI) is a measurement of muscle quality that is directly related to overall health. There has been little study on the relationship between the muscle quality index and periodontitis in American people beyond 30 years. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the link between periodontitis and Muscle quality index (MQI) in older Americans.MethodsThree thousand two hundred fifty-eight individuals (aged 30 to 59) who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014 were considered eligible for the cross-sectional investigation. A hand dynamometer was used to determine the handgrip strength (HGS). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was employed to calculate ASM (DXA). MQIArm was calculated by dividing the dominant hand's HGS by the dominant arm's ASM (in kg/kg). MQIApp was calculated by dividing the dominant hand's HGS by the ASM (in kg/kg). MQItotal was calculated by dividing the sum of the dominant and non-dominant hands by the ASM (in kg/kg). To investigate the link between muscle quality index and periodontal disease, the weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used. Using generalized additive models, it was determined if a nonlinear connection existed. Then, we developed a two-piece linear regression model and calculated the inflection point using a recursive approach. A mediation study was performed to determine how much of the impact of MQItotal on periodontitis was mediated by potential variables.ResultsThree thousand two hundred fifty-eight participants from the United States were enrolled. The OR (95% CI) for the relationship between MQItotal and periodontitis in the regression model with fully adjusted variables was 0.69 (0.53-0.91), for the connection between MQIArm and periodontitis was 0.90 (0.84-0.97), and for the association between MQIApp and periodontitis was 0.49 (0.30-0.80). MQItotal and periodontitis were shown to have a J-shaped relationship with a change point of 3.64. Before the change point, the OR (95% CI) was 0.69 (0.58, 0.82). In the analysis of drinking and married status, the interaction was statistically significant. Analysis of mediation showed that alcohol use was responsible for 0.4% (0.10 to 1.2) of the effect of MQItotal on periodontitis.ConclusionIn American adults aged over 30, the Muscle Quality Index (MQI) exhibited an independent negative correlation with moderate to severe periodontitis, demonstrating a J-shaped relationship. Furthermore, alcohol consumption may act as a mediator in the association between MQI and periodontitis.

Project description:Objectives Reports from national surveys in South Korea and Japan have indicated that the prevalence of periodontal disease is lower in Korea than in Japan. However, these national surveys have not evaluated factors related to periodontal health condition, including diabetes and metabolic syndrome. This study compared periodontal conditions between Korean and Japanese adults, in the context of general health status. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting National survey in South Korea (Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, ‘KNHANES’) and a population-based study in Japan (Hisayama study); both were conducted in 2012. Participants This study included 3574 Korean and 2205 Japanese adults aged 40–79 years. Outcome measures Periodontal condition was assessed by using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Examiners in Japan underwent clinical calibration training for periodontal examination with a gold-standard examiner from KNHANES, prior to the Hisayama study. Results The age-adjusted prevalences of periodontal disease, defined as CPI score ≥3, were 31.4% and 42.1% in South Korea and Japan, respectively (p<0.001). The age-adjusted prevalences of diabetes (p=0.018) and metabolic syndrome (p=0.001) were higher in Korea than in Japan. The numbers of present and filled teeth and percentages of participants who visited a dental clinic in the last 12 months were higher in Japan than in Korea (all p<0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that the Japanese participants were more likely to have periodontal disease than were the Korean participants, after adjusting for age, sex, occupation, oral health status, oral health behaviour, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Conclusions A higher prevalence of periodontal disease was found in Japanese participants than in Korean participants. Further studies are needed to more clearly elucidate factors underlying the difference in periodontal conditions between the two populations, including those related to the dental healthcare system and dietary intake.

Project description:BackgroundBisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (BPF) are widely used in various consumer products. They are environmental contaminants with estrogenic properties that have been linked to various health outcomes. Understanding their impact on body composition is crucial for identifying potential health risks and developing preventive strategies. However, most current studies have only focused on their relationship with BMI.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the association between urinary levels of BPA, BPS, and BPF and body composition, including BMI, lean mass, and fat mass, in a large population-based sample.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2016. Body composition data were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, which provided precise measurements of lean mass, fat mass, and other indicators. We used multivariate linear regression models to estimate the associations, adjusting for potential confounders such as age, gender, race, socioeconomic factors, and lifestyle variables.ResultsThe results revealed significant associations between bisphenol exposure and body composition. After adjusting for covariates, BPS showed a positive association with BMI, with quartiles 3 and 4 having 0.91 (95% CI 0.34-1.48) and 1.15 (95% CI 0.55-1.74) higher BMI, respectively, compared with quartile 1 (P<.001). BPA was negatively associated with total lean mass (TLM) and appendicular lean mass, with quartiles 2, 3, and 4 having -7.85 (95% CI -11.44 to -4.25), -12.33 (95% CI -16.12 to -8.54), and -11.08 (95% CI -15.16 to -7.01) lower TLM, respectively, compared with quartile 1 (P<.001). BPS was negatively associated with TLM, with quartiles 3 (β=-10.53, 95% CI -16.98 to -4.08) and 4 (β=-11.14, 95% CI -17.83 to -4.45) having significantly lower TLM (P=.005). Both BPA and BPS showed a positive dose-response relationship with trunk fat (BPA: P=.002; BPS: P<.001) and total fat (BPA: P<.001; BPS: P=.01). No significant association was found between BPF and any body composition parameter.ConclusionsThis large-sample study highlights the associations between urinary levels of BPA and BPS and alterations in body composition, including changes in lean mass, fat mass, and regional fat distribution. These findings underscore the importance of understanding the potential health risks associated with bisphenol exposure and emphasize the need for targeted interventions to mitigate adverse effects on body composition.

Project description:BackgroundThe field of health information management (HIM) focuses on the protection and management of health information from a variety of sources. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Council for Excellence in Education (CEE) determines the needed skills and competencies for this field. AHIMA's HIM curricula competencies are divided into several domains among the associate, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Moreover, AHIMA's career map displays career paths for HIM professionals. What is not known is whether these competencies and the career map align with industry demands.ObjectiveThe primary aim of this study is to analyze HIM job postings on a US national job recruiting website to determine whether the job postings align with recognized HIM domains, while the secondary aim is to evaluate the AHIMA career map to determine whether it aligns with the job postings.MethodsA national job recruitment website was mined electronically (web scraping) using the search term "health information management." This cross-sectional inquiry evaluated job advertisements during a 2-week period in 2021. After the exclusion criteria, 691 job postings were analyzed. Data were evaluated with descriptive statistics and natural language processing (NLP). Soft cosine measures (SCM) were used to determine correlations between job postings and the AHIMA career map, curricular competencies, and curricular considerations. ANOVA was used to determine statistical significance.ResultsOf all the job postings, 29% (140/691) were in the Southeast, followed by the Midwest (140/691, 20%), West (131/691,19%), Northeast (94/691, 14%), and Southwest (73/691, 11%). The educational levels requested were evenly distributed between high school diploma (219/691, 31.7%), associate degree (269/691, 38.6%), or bachelor's degree (225/691, 32.5%). A master's degree was requested in only 8% (52/691) of the postings, with 72% (42/58) preferring one and 28% (16/58) requiring one. A Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) credential was the most commonly requested (207/691, 29.9%) in job postings, followed by Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA; 180/691, 26%) credential. SCM scores were significantly higher in the informatics category compared to the coding and revenue cycle (P=.006) and data analytics categories (P<.001) but not significantly different from the information governance category (P=.85). The coding and revenue cycle category had a significantly higher SCM score compared to the data analytics category (P<.001). Additionally, the information governance category was significantly higher than the data analytics category (P<.001). SCM scores were significantly different between each competency category, except there were no differences in the average SCM score between the information protection and revenue cycle management categories (P=.96) and the information protection and data structure, content, and information governance categories (P=.31).ConclusionsIndustry job postings primarily sought degrees, with a master's degree a distant fourth. NLP analysis of job postings suggested that the correlation between the informatics category and job postings was higher than that of the coding, revenue cycle, and data analytics categories.
