A repository for the publication and sharing of heterogeneous materials data.

ABSTRACT: National Materials Data Management and Service platform (NMDMS) is a materials data repository for the publication and sharing of heterogeneous materials scientific data and follows the FAIR principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. To ensure data are 'Interoperable, NMDMS uses a user-friendly semi-structured scientific data model, named dynamic container', to define, exchange, and store heterogeneous scientific data. Then, a personalized yet standardized data submission subsystem, a rigorous project data review and publication subsystem, and a multi-granularity data query and retrieval subsystem collaboratively make data 'Reusable', 'Findable', and 'Accessible'. Finally, China's "National Key R&D Program: Material Genetic Engineering Key Special Project" has adopted NMDMS to publish and share its project data. There are 12,251,040 pieces of data published in NMDMS since 2018, under 87 categories and 1,912 user-defined schemas from 45 projects. The platform has been accessed 908875 times, and 2403,208 pieces of data have been downloaded. In short, NMDMS effectively accelerates the publication and sharing of material project data in China.

Project description:ObjectiveTo characterise experiences using clinical research data shared through the National Institutes of Health (NIH)'s Biologic Specimen and Data Repository Information Coordinating Center (BioLINCC) clinical research data repository, along with data recipients' perceptions of the value, importance and challenges with using BioLINCC data.Design and settingCross-sectional web-based survey.ParticipantsAll investigators who requested and received access to clinical research data from BioLINCC between 2007 and 2014.Main outcome measuresReasons for BioLINCC data request, research project plans, interactions with original study investigators, BioLINCC experience and other project details.ResultsThere were 536 investigators who requested and received access to clinical research data from BioLINCC between 2007 and 2014. Of 441 potential respondents, 195 completed the survey (response rate=44%); 89% (n=174) requested data for an independent study, 17% (n=33) for pilot/preliminary analysis. Commonly cited reasons for requesting data through BioLINCC were feasibility of collecting data of similar size and scope (n=122) and insufficient financial resources for primary data collection (n=76). For 95% of respondents (n=186), a primary research objective was to complete new research, as opposed to replicate prior analyses. Prior to requesting data from BioLINCC, 18% (n=36) of respondents had contacted the original study investigators to obtain data, whereas 24% (n=47) had done so to request collaboration. Nearly all (n=176; 90%) respondents found the data to be suitable for their proposed project; among those who found the data unsuitable (n=19; 10%), cited reasons were data too complicated to use (n=5) and data poorly organised (n=5). Half (n=98) of respondents had completed their proposed projects, of which 67% (n=66) have been published.ConclusionsInvestigators were primarily using clinical research data from BioLINCC for independent research, making use of data that would otherwise have not been feasible to collect.

Project description:BackgroundCalls have been made for increased access to individual participant data (IPD) from clinical trials, to ensure that complete evidence is available. However, despite the obvious benefits, progress towards this is frustratingly slow. In the meantime, many systematic reviews have already collected IPD from clinical trials. We propose that a central repository for these IPD should be established to ensure that these datasets are safeguarded and made available for use by others, building on the strengths and advantages of the collaborative groups that have been brought together in developing the datasets.ObjectiveEvaluate the level of support, and identify major issues, for establishing a central repository of IPD.DesignOn-line survey with email reminders.Participants71 reviewers affiliated with the Cochrane Collaboration's IPD Meta-analysis Methods Group were invited to participate.Results30 (42%) invitees responded: 28 (93%) had been involved in an IPD review and 24 (80%) had been involved in a randomised trial. 25 (83%) agreed that a central repository was a good idea and 25 (83%) agreed that they would provide their IPD for central storage. Several benefits of a central repository were noted: safeguarding and standardisation of data, increased efficiency of IPD meta-analyses, knowledge advancement, and facilitating future clinical, and methodological research. The main concerns were gaining permission from trial data owners, uncertainty about the purpose of the repository, potential resource implications, and increased workload for IPD reviewers. Restricted access requiring approval, data security, anonymisation of data, and oversight committees were highlighted as issues under governance of the repository.ConclusionThere is support in this community of IPD reviewers, many of whom are also involved in clinical trials, for storing IPD in a central repository. Results from this survey are informing further work on developing a repository of IPD which is currently underway by our group.
