A near-zero energy system based on a kinetic energy harvester for smart ranch.

ABSTRACT: Smart ranch relying on sensor systems to realize monitoring of animals and the environment has emerged with the promotion of the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper proposes a near-zero energy system (NZES) based on a kinetic energy harvester (KEH) for smart ranch. The KEH is based on motion enhancement mechanism (MEM) for kinetic energy recovery from animal movement to realize self-powered applications of smart ranch. The MEM realizes the input and enhancement of weak kinetic energy based on bistable inertial swing. The KEH is analyzed theoretically and experimentally based on cattle leg movement. Under weak excitation (low-frequency and amplitude swing), the maximum voltage growth rate of the KEH based on the MEM reaches 103.7% compared with the linear KEH. The results of application feasibility tests, dressing field experiments, and application outlook show that the KEH has the potential to realize self-powered applications in the NZES of smart ranch.

Reusing the Wasted Energy of Electrochromic Smart Window for Near-Zero Energy Building.

Project description:Electrochromic smart windows (ESWs) are an effective energy-saving technology for near-zero energy buildings. They consume electric energy unidirectionally during a round-trip coloring-bleaching process, with the energy involved in the bleaching process being wasted. It is highly desirable to reuse this wasted electric energy directly and/or transfer it into other energy storage equipment, further enhancing the overall efficiency of electric energy usage. Herein, a zinc anode-based ESW (ESW-PZ) is reported that not only has fascinating visible-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) dual-band electrochromic performance (a high optical contrast of 63%) but also showcases good energy storage characteristics (a wide voltage window of 2.6 V and a high energy density of 127.5 µWh cm-2). The buildings utilizing ESW-PZ to modulate indoor environments demonstrated an average annual energy saving of 366 MJ m-2 based on energy simulations, which is about 16% of the total energy consumption. Impressively, a high utilization efficiency of 90% (855 mWh m-2) of the wasted electric energy is realized through an ingenious circuit-switching strategy, which can be reused to power small household appliances.

Near-Zero-Energy Smart Battery Thermal Management Enabled by Sorption Energy Harvesting from Air.

Project description:Effective battery thermal management (BTM) is critical to ensure fast charging/discharging, safe, and efficient operation of batteries by regulating their working temperatures within an optimal range. However, the existing BTM methods not only are limited by a large space, weight, and energy consumption but also hardly overcome the contradiction of battery cooling at high temperatures and battery heating at low temperatures. Here we propose a near-zero-energy smart battery thermal management (SBTM) strategy for both passive heating and cooling based on sorption energy harvesting from air. The sorption-induced reversible thermal effects due to metal-organic framework water vapor desorption/sorption automatically enable battery cooling and heating depending on the local battery temperature. We demonstrate that a self-adaptive SBTM device with MIL-101(Cr)@carbon foam can control the battery temperature below 45 °C, even at high charge/discharge rates in hot environments, and realize self-preheating to ∼15 °C in cold environments, with an increase in the battery capacity of 9.2%. Our approach offers a promising route to achieving compact, liquid-free, high-energy/power-density, low-energy consumption, and self-adaptive smart thermal management for thermo-related devices.

A Forest-Based Triboelectric Energy Harvester.

Project description:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are a new class of energy harvesting devices that have the potential to become a dominating technology for producing renewable energy. The versatility of their designs allows TENGs to harvest mechanical energy from sources like wind and water. Currently used renewable energy technologies have a restricted number of materials from which they can be constructed, such as metals, plastics, semiconductors, and rare-earth metals. These materials are all non-renewable in themselves as they require mining/drilling and are difficult to recycle at end of life. TENGs on the other hand can be built from a large repertoire of materials, including materials from bio-based sources. Here, a TENG constructed fully from wood-derived materials like lignin, cellulose, paper, and cardboard, thus making it 100% green, recyclable, and even biodegradable, is demonstrated. The device can produce a maximum voltage, current, and power of 232 V, 17 mA m-2, and 1.6 W m-2, respectively, which is enough to power electronic systems and charge 6.5 µF capacitors. Finally, the device is used in a smart package application as a self-powered impact sensor. The work shows the feasibility of producing renewable energy technologies that are sustainable both with respect to their energy sources and their material composition.

Kinetic Electromagnetic Energy Harvester for Railway Applications-Development and Test with Wireless Sensor.

Project description:This paper deals with a development and lab testing of energy harvesting technology for autonomous sensing in railway applications. Moving trains are subjected to high levels of vibrations and rail deformations that could be converted via energy harvesting into useful electricity. Modern maintenance solutions of a rail trackside typically consist of a large number of integrated sensing systems, which greatly benefit from autonomous source of energy. Although the amount of energy provided by conventional energy harvesting devices is usually only around several milliwatts, it is sufficient as a source of electrical power for low power sensing devices. The main aim of this paper is to design and test a kinetic electromagnetic energy harvesting system that could use energy from a passing train to deliver sufficient electrical power for sensing nodes. Measured mechanical vibrations of regional and express trains were used in laboratory testing of the developed energy harvesting device with an integrated resistive load and wireless transmission system, and based on these tests the proposed technology shows a high potential for railway applications.

Piezoelectric Energy Harvester Based on LiNbO3 Thin Films.

Project description:This paper reports the results of the influence of the energy of laser pulses during laser ablation on the morphology and electro-physical properties of LiNbO3 nanocrystalline films. It is found that increasing laser pulse energy from 180 to 220 mJ results in the concentration of charge carriers in LiNbO3 films decreasing from 8.6 × 1015 to 1.0 × 1013 cm-3, with the mobility of charge carriers increasing from 0.43 to 17.4 cm2/(V·s). In addition, experimental studies of sublayer material effects on the geometric parameters of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are performed. It is found that the material of the lower electrode has a significant effect on the formation of CNTs. CNTs obtained at the same growth time on a sample with a Cr sublayer have a smaller diameter and a longer length compared to samples with a V sublayer. Based on the obtained results, the architecture of the energy nanogenerator is proposed. The current generated by the nanogenerator is 18 nA under mechanical stress of 600 nN. The obtained piezoelectric nanogenerator parameters are used to estimate the parameters of the hybrid-carbon-nanostructures-based piezoelectric energy converter. Obtained results are promising for the development of efficient energy converters for alternative energy devices based on lead-free ferroelectric films.

A self-powered and self-monitoring ultra-low frequency wave energy harvester for smart ocean ranches.

Project description:The ocean ranch environment contains ultra-low-frequency wave energy that can be utilized for powering low-power equipment. Therefore, this article proposes a smart ocean ranch self-powered and self-monitoring system (SOR-SSS) which consists of several key components: a mass pendulum ball (MPB), a commutation wheel system (CWS), an electromagnetic energy harvesting unit (EEHU), and four piezoelectric energy harvesting units (PEHU). Through six-degree-of-freedom vibration test bench experiments, the SOR-SSS achieved a maximum output power of 17.56 mW under a working condition of 0.4 Hz, which was sufficient to power 152 LED lights. Additionally, by training the experimental base data using the LSTM algorithm, two different tasks were trained with a maximum accuracy of 99.72% and 99.80%, respectively. These results indicate that the SOR-SSS holds significant potential for collecting and predicting ultra-low-frequency blue energy. It can provide an effective energy supply and monitoring solution for smart ocean ranch.

Graphene-based autonomous pyroelectric system for near-field energy conversion.

Project description:In the close vicinity of a hot solid, at distances smaller than the thermal wavelength, a strong electromagnetic energy density exists because of the presence of evanescent field. Here we introduce a many-body conversion principle to harvest this energy using graphene-based pyroelectric conversion devices made with an active layer encapsulated between two graphene field-effect transistors which are deposited on the source and on the cold sink. By tuning the bias voltage applied to the gates of these transistors, the thermal state and the spontaneous polarization of the active layer can be controlled at kHz frequencies. We demonstrate that the power density generated by these conversion systems can reach [Formula: see text] using pyroelectric Ericsson cycles, a value which surpasses the current production capacity of near-field thermophotovoltaic conversion devices by more than three orders of magnitude with low grade heat sources ([Formula: see text]) and small temperature differences ([Formula: see text]).

Multidirectional Piezoelectric Vibration Energy Harvester Based on Cam Rotor Mechanism.

Project description:The techniques that harvest mechanical energy from low-frequency, multidirectional environmental vibrations have been considered a promising strategy to implement a sustainable power source for wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things. However, the obvious inconsistency in the output voltage and operating frequency among different directions may bring a hindrance to energy management. To address this issue, this paper reports a cam-rotor-based approach for a multidirectional piezoelectric vibration energy harvester. The cam rotor can transform vertical excitation into a reciprocating circular motion, producing a dynamic centrifugal acceleration to excite the piezoelectric beam. The same beam group is utilized when harvesting vertical and horizontal vibrations. Therefore, the proposed harvester reveals similar characterization in its resonant frequency and output voltage at different working directions. The structure design and modeling, device prototyping and experimental validation are conducted. The results show that the proposed harvester can produce a peak voltage of up to 42.4 V under a 0.2 g acceleration with a favorable power of 0.52 mW, and the resonant frequency for each operating direction is stable at around 3.7 Hz. Practical applications in lighting up LEDs and powering a WSN system demonstrate the promising potential of the proposed approach in capturing energy from ambient vibrations to construct self-powered engineering systems for structural health monitoring, environmental measuring, etc.

A Cantilever Beam-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator as a Drill Pipe Transverse Vibration Energy Harvester Powering Intelligent Exploitation System.

Project description:Measurement While Drilling (MWD) is the most commonly used real-time information acquisition technique in offshore intelligent drilling, its power supply has always been a concern. Triboelectric nanogenerators have been shown to harvest low-frequency vibrational energy in the environment and convert it into electricity to power small sensors and electrical devices. This work proposed a cantilever-beam-based triboelectric nanogenerator (CB-TENG) for transverse vibration energy harvesting of a drill pipe. The CB-TENG consists of two vibrators composed of spring steel with PTFE attached and Al electrodes. The structurally optimized CB-TENG can output a peak power of 2.56 mW under the vibration condition of f = 3.0 Hz and A = 50 mm, and the electrical output can be further enhanced with the increased vibration parameters. An array-type vibration energy harvester integrated with eight CB-TENGs is designed to fully adapt to the interior of the drill pipe and improve output performance. The device can realize omnidirectional vibration energy harvesting in the two-dimensional plane with good robustness. Under the typical vibration condition, the short-circuit current and the peak power can reach 49.85 μA and 30.95 mW, respectively. Finally, a series of demonstration experiments have been carried out, indicating the application prospects of the device.

Near-zero metamaterial inspired UHF antenna for nanosatellite communication system.

Project description:Epsilon-and-mu-near-zero (EMNZ) metamaterial structure inspired UHF antenna for nanosatellite has been proposed in this paper. The antenna consists of 3 × 2-unit cell array on the ground plane and a meander line radiating patch. Coaxial probe feeding technique has been obtained to excite the antenna. The meander line enables the antenna to resonate at lower UHF band and the metamaterial array is used to make the resonant frequency stable by reducing the coupling effect with metallic nanosatellite structure. The metamaterial structure exhibits EMNZ characteristics from 385 MHz to 488.5 MHz, which facilitates stable resonant frequency and higher antenna efficiency when embedded with nanosatellite structure. The proposed EMNZ inspired antenna has achieved measured impedance bandwidth (S11 < -10 dB) of 14.92 MHz (391 MHz-405.92 MHz). The perceptible novelty of this paper is the development of EMNZ metamaterial that significantly improves the UHF antenna's operating frequency stability as well as efficiency for low earth orbit nanosatellite communications.
