Thin Solid Electrolyte Separators for Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

ABSTRACT: The lithium-sulfur battery is one of the most promising "beyond Li-ion" battery chemistries owing to its superior gravimetric energy density and low cost. Nonetheless, its commercialization has been hindered by its low cycle life due to the polysulfide shuttle and nonuniform Li-metal plating and stripping. Thin and dense solid electrolyte separators could address these issues without compromising on energy density. Here, we introduce a novel argyrodite (Li₆PS₅Cl)-carboxylated nitrile butadiene rubber (XNBR) composite thin solid electrolyte separator (TSE) (<50 μm) processed by a scalable calendering technique and compatible with Li-metal. When integrated in a full cell with a commercial tape-cast sulfur cathode (3.54 mg_S cm^-2) in the presence of an in situ polymerized lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide-polydioxolane catholyte and a 100 μm Li-metal foil anode, we demonstrate stable cycling for 50 cycles under realistic operating conditions (stack pressure of <1 MPa and 30 °C).

All-Solid-State Thin-Film Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) system coupled with thin-film solid electrolyte as a novel high-energy micro-battery has enormous potential for complementing embedded energy harvesters to enable the autonomy of the Internet of Things microdevice. However, the volatility in high vacuum and intrinsic sluggish kinetics of S hinder researchers from empirically integrating it into all-solid-state thin-film batteries, leading to inexperience in fabricating all-solid-state thin-film Li-S batteries (TFLSBs). Herein, for the first time, TFLSBs have been successfully constructed by stacking vertical graphene nanosheets-Li2S (VGs-Li2S) composite thin-film cathode, lithium-phosphorous-oxynitride (LiPON) thin-film solid electrolyte, and Li metal anode. Fundamentally eliminating Li-polysulfide shuttle effect and maintaining a stable VGs-Li2S/LiPON interface upon prolonged cycles have been well identified by employing the solid-state Li-S system with an "unlimited Li" reservoir, which exhibits excellent long-term cycling stability with a capacity retention of 81% for 3,000 cycles, and an exceptional high temperature tolerance up to 60 °C. More impressively, VGs-Li2S-based TFLSBs with evaporated-Li thin-film anode also demonstrate outstanding cycling performance over 500 cycles with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.71%. Collectively, this study presents a new development strategy for secure and high-performance rechargeable all-solid-state thin-film batteries.

Realizing high-capacity all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries using a low-density inorganic solid-state electrolyte.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur all-solid-state batteries using inorganic solid-state electrolytes are considered promising electrochemical energy storage technologies. However, developing positive electrodes with high sulfur content, adequate sulfur utilization, and high mass loading is challenging. Here, to address these concerns, we propose using a liquid-phase-synthesized Li3PS4-2LiBH4 glass-ceramic solid electrolyte with a low density (1.491 g cm-3), small primary particle size (~500 nm) and bulk ionic conductivity of 6.0 mS cm-1 at 25 °C for fabricating lithium-sulfur all-solid-state batteries. When tested in a Swagelok cell configuration with a Li-In negative electrode and a 60 wt% S positive electrode applying an average stack pressure of ~55 MPa, the all-solid-state battery delivered a high discharge capacity of about 1144.6 mAh g-1 at 167.5 mA g-1 and 60 °C. We further demonstrate that the use of the low-density solid electrolyte increases the electrolyte volume ratio in the cathode, reduces inactive bulky sulfur, and improves the content uniformity of the sulfur-based positive electrode, thus providing sufficient ion conduction pathways for battery performance improvement.

A solid-state electrolyte for electrochemical lithium-sulfur cells.

Project description:Post-lithium-ion batteries are designed to achieve high energy density and high safety by modifying their active material and cell configuration. In terms of the active material, lithium-sulfur batteries have the highest charge-storage capacity and high active-material utilization because of the use of a conversion-type sulfur cathode, which involves conversion between solid-state sulfur, liquid-state polysulfides, and solid-state sulfides. In terms of the configuration, solid-state batteries ensure high safety by using a solid-state electrolyte in between the two electrodes. Herein, we use a lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO) solid-state electrolyte in the lithium-sulfur cell with a polysulfide catholyte electrode. The LLTO, which replaces the conventional liquid electrolyte, is a solid-state electrolyte that offers smooth lithium-ion diffusion and prevents the loss of polysulfides, while the highly active polysulfide electrode, which replaces the solid-state sulfur cathode, improves the reaction kinetics and the active-material utilization. The material and electrochemical analyses confirm the stabilized electrodes exhibit long-lasting lithium stripping/plating stability and limited polysulfide diffusion. Moreover, the morphologically and electrochemically smooth interface between the solid-state electrolyte and catholyte enables fast charge transfer in the cell, which demonstrates a high charge-storage capacity of 1429 mA h g-1, high rate performance, and high electrochemical efficiency.

Uncoordinated chemistry enables highly conductive and stable electrolyte/filler interfaces for solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries.

Project description:Composite-polymer-electrolytes (CPEs) embedded with advanced filler materials offer great promise for fast and preferential Li+ conduction. The filler surface chemistry determines the interaction with electrolyte molecules and thus critically regulates the Li+ behaviors at the interfaces. Herein, we probe into the role of electrolyte/filler interfaces (EFI) in CPEs and promote Li+ conduction by introducing an unsaturated coordination Prussian blue analog (UCPBA) filler. Combining scanning transmission X-ray microscope stack imaging studies and first-principle calculations, fast Li+ conduction is revealed only achievable at a chemically stable EFI, which can be established by the unsaturated Co-O coordination in UCPBA to circumvent the side reactions. Moreover, the as-exposed Lewis-acid metal centers in UCPBA efficiently attract the Lewis-base anions of Li salts, which facilitates the Li+ disassociation and enhances its transference number (tLi+). Attributed to these superiorities, the obtained CPEs realize high room-temperature ionic conductivity up to 0.36 mS cm-1 and tLi+ of 0.6, enabling an excellent cyclability of lithium metal electrodes over 4,000 h as well as remarkable capacity retention of 97.6% over 180 cycles at 0.5 C for solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries. This work highlights the crucial role of EFI chemistry in developing highly conductive CPEs and high-performance solid-state batteries.

A novel quasi-solid state electrolyte with highly effective polysulfide diffusion inhibition for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Project description:Polymer solid state electrolytes are actively sought for their potential application in energy storage devices, particularly lithium metal rechargeable batteries. Herein, we report a polymer with high concentration salts as a quasi-solid state electrolyte used for lithium-sulfur cells, which shows an ionic conductivity of 1.6 mS cm(-1) at room temperature. The cycling performance of Li-S battery with this electrolyte shows a long cycle life (300 cycles) and high coulombic efficiency (>98%), without any consuming additives in the electrolyte. Moreover, it also shows a remarkably decreased self-discharge (only 0.2%) after storage for two weeks at room temperature. The reason can be attributed to that the electrolyte can suppress polysulfide anions diffusion, due to the high ratio oxygen atoms with negative charges which induce an electrical repulsion to the polysulfide anions, and their relatively long chains which can provide additional steric hindrance. Thus, the polysulfide anions can be located around carbon particles, which result in remarkably improved overall electrochemical performance, and also the electrolyte have a function of suppress the formation of lithium dendrites on the lithium anode surface.

High-Humidity-Tolerant Chloride Solid-State Electrolyte for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries.

Project description:Halide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) hold promise for the commercialization of all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs); however, the currently cost-effective zirconium-based chloride SSEs suffer from hygroscopic irreversibility, low ionic conductivity, and inadequate thermal stability. Herein, a novel indium-doped zirconium-based chloride is fabricated to satisfy the abovementioned requirements, achieving outstanding-performance ASSLBs at room temperature. Compared to the conventional Li2ZrCl6 and Li3InCl6 SSEs, the hc-Li2+xZr1-xInxCl6 (0.3 ≤ x ≤ 1) possesses higher ionic conductivity (up to 1.4 mS cm-1), and thermal stability (350 °C). At the same time, the hc-Li2.8Zr0.2In0.8Cl6 also shows obvious hygroscopic reversibility, where its recovery rate of the ionic conductivity is up to 82.5% after 24-h exposure in the 5% relative humidity followed by heat treatment. Theoretical calculation and experimental results reveal that those advantages are derived from the lattice expansion and the formation of Li3InCl6 ·2H2O hydrates, which can effectively reduce the migration energy barrier of Li ions and offer reversible hydration/dehydration pathway. Finally, an ASSLB, assembled with reheated-Li2.8Zr0.2In0.8Cl6 after humidity exposure, single-crystal LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 and Li-In alloy, exhibits capacity retention of 71% after 500 cycles under 1 C at 25 °C. This novel high-humidity-tolerant chloride electrolyte is expected to greatly carry forward the ASSLBs industrialization.

Methylamine Lithium Borohydride as Electrolyte for All-Solid-State Batteries.

Project description:Fast Li-ion conductivity at room temperature is a major challenge for utilization of all-solid-state Li batteries. Metal borohydrides with neutral ligands are a new emerging class of solid-state ionic conductors, and here we report the discovery of a new mono-methylamine lithium borohydride with very fast Li+ conductivity at room temperature. LiBH4 ⋅CH3 NH2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21 /c, forming a two-dimensional unique layered structure. The layers are separated by hydrophobic -CH3 moieties, and contain large voids, allowing for fast Li-ionic conduction in the interlayers, σ(Li+ )=1.24×10-3 S cm-1 at room temperature. The electronic conductivity is negligible, and the electrochemical stability is ≈2.1 V vs Li. The first all-solid-state battery using a lithium borohydride with a neutral ligand as the electrolyte, Li-metal as the anode and TiS2 as the cathode is demonstrated.

Nonflammable quasi-solid-state electrolyte for stable lithium-metal batteries.

Project description:Rechargeable lithium batteries with high-voltage/capacity cathodes are regarded as promising high-energy-density energy-storage systems. Nevertheless, these systems are restricted by some critical challenges, such as flammable electrolyte, lithium dendrite formation and rapid capacity fade at high voltage and elevated temperature. In this work, we report a quasi-solid-state composite electrolyte (QCE) prepared by in situ polymerization reactions. The electrolyte consists of polymer matrix, inorganic filler, nonflammable plasticizers and Li salt, and shows a good thermal stability, a moderate ionic conductivity of 2.8 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C, and a wide electrochemical window up to 6.7 V. The batteries with the QCE show good electrochemical performance when coupled with lithium metal anode and LiCoO2 or LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathodes. Pouch-type batteries with the QCE also exhibit stable cycling, and can tolerate abuse testes such as folding, cutting and nail penetration. The in situ formed fluorides and phosphides from the plasticizers stabilize the interfaces between the QCE and electrodes, which enables stable cycling of Li metal batteries.

A Biodegradable Polyester-Based Polymer Electrolyte for Solid-State Lithium Batteries.

Project description:The low ionic conductivity, narrow electrochemical window, poor interfacial stability with lithium metal, and non-degradability of raw materials are the main problems of solid polymer electrolytes, restricting the development of lithium solid-state batteries. In this paper, a biodegradable poly (2,3-butanediol/1,3-propanediol/succinic acid/sebacic acid/itaconic acid) ester was designed and used as a substrate to prepare biodegradable polyester solid polymer electrolytes for solid-state lithium batteries using a simple solution-casting method. A large number of ester-based polar groups in the amorphous polymer become a high-speed channel for carrying lithium ions as a weak coordination site. The biodegradable polyester solid polymer electrolyte exhibits a wide electrochemical window of 5.08 V (vs. Li/Li+), high ionic conductivity of 1.03 mS cm-1 (25 °C), and a large Li+ transference number of 0.56. The electrolyte exhibits good interfacial stability with lithium, with stable Li plating/stripping behavior at room temperature over 2100 h. This design strategy for biodegradable polyester solid polymer electrolytes offers new possibilities for the development of matrix materials for environmentally friendly lithium metal solid-state batteries.

Organosulfide-plasticized solid-electrolyte interphase layer enables stable lithium metal anodes for long-cycle lithium-sulfur batteries.

Project description:Lithium metal is a promising anode candidate for the next-generation rechargeable battery due to its highest specific capacity (3860 mA h g-1) and lowest potential, but low Coulombic efficiency and formation of lithium dendrites hinder its practical application. Here, we report a self-formed flexible hybrid solid-electrolyte interphase layer through co-deposition of organosulfides/organopolysulfides and inorganic lithium salts using sulfur-containing polymers as an additive in the electrolyte. The organosulfides/organopolysulfides serve as "plasticizer" in the solid-electrolyte interphase layer to improve its mechanical flexibility and toughness. The as-formed robust solid-electrolyte interphase layers enable dendrite-free lithium deposition and significantly improve Coulombic efficiency (99% over 400 cycles at a current density of 2 mA cm-2). A lithium-sulfur battery based on this strategy exhibits long cycling life (1000 cycles) and good capacity retention. This study reveals an avenue to effectively fabricate stable solid-electrolyte interphase layer for solving the issues associated with lithium metal anodes.The practical application of lithium metal anodes suffers from the poor Coulombic efficiency and growth of lithium dendrites. Here, the authors report an approach to enable the self-formation of stable and flexible solid-electrolyte interphase layers which serve to address both issues.
