Differentiable Formation of Chiroptical Lanthanide Heterometallic Ln_n Ln'_4-n (L₆ ) (n=0-4) Tetrahedra with C₂ -Symmetrical Bis(tridentate) Ligands.

ABSTRACT: Construction of lanthanide heterometallic complex is important for engineering multifunction molecular containers. However, it remains a challenge because of the similar ionic radii of lanthanides. Herein we attempt to prepare chiral lanthanide heterometallic tetrahedra. Upon crystallization with a mixture of [Eu₂ L₃ ] and [Ln₂ L₃ ] (Ln=Gd, Tb and Dy) helicates, a mixture of heterometallic Eu_n Ln'_4-n (L₆ ) (n=0-4) tetrahedra was prepared. Selective formation of heterometallic tetrahedron was observed as MS deconvolution results deviated from statistical results. The formation of heterometallic tetrahedron was found to be sensitive to ionic radii as well as the ratio of the two helicates used in the crystallization.

Project description:Sandwich d/f heterometallic complexes [(Ln(hfac)3)2M(acac)3] (Ln = La, Pr, Sm, Dy and M = Co; Ln = La and M = Ru) were prepared in strictly anhydrous conditions reacting the formally unsaturated fragment [Ln(hfac)3] and [M(acac)3] in a 2-to-1 molar ratio. These heterometallic complexes are highly sensitive to moisture. Spectroscopic observation revealed that on hydrolysis, these compounds yield dinuclear heterometallic compounds [Ln(hfac)3M(acac)3], prepared here for comparison purposes only. Quantum mechanical calculations supported, on the one hand, the hypothesis on the geometrical arrangement obtained from ATR-IR and NMR spectra and, on the other hand, helped to rationalize the spontaneous hydrolysis reaction.

Structure and bonding patterns in heterometallic organometallics with linear Ln-Pd-Ln motifs.

Project description:Complexes with short intermetallic distances between transition metal fragments and lanthanide (Ln) fragments are fascinating objects of study, owing to the ambiguity of the nature of the interaction. The addition of the divalent lanthanide fragments Cp*2Ln(OEt2) (Ln = Sm or Yb) to a Pd(ii) complex bearing the deprotonated form of the redox-active, non-symmetrical ligand, 2-pyrimidin-2-yl-1H-benzimidazole (Hbimpm), leads to two isostructural complexes, of the general formula (Cp*2Ln)2[μ-Pd(pyridyl)2] (Ln = Sm (4) and Yb (5)). These adducts have interesting features, such as unique linear Ln-Pd-Ln arrangements and short Ln-Pd distances, which deviate from the expected lanthanide contraction. A mixed computational and spectroscopic study into the formation of these adducts gathers important clues as to their formation. At the same time, thorough characterization of these complexes establishes the +3 oxidation state of all the involved Ln centers. Detailed theoretical computations demonstrate that the apparent deviation from lanthanide contraction is not due to any difference in the intermetallic interaction between the Pd and the Ln, but that the fragments are joined together by electrostatic interactions and dispersive forces. This conclusion contrasts with the findings about a third complex, Cp*2Yb(μ-Me)2PdCp* (6), formed during the reaction, which also possesses a short Yb-Pd distance. Studies at the CASSCF level of theory on this complex show several orbitals containing significant interactions between the 4f and 4d manifolds of the metals. This demonstrates the need for methodical and careful analyses in gauging the intermetallic interaction and the inadequacy of empirical metrics in describing such phenomena.

Role of Surface Oxygen Vacancies and Lanthanide Contraction Phenomenon of Ln(OH)3 (Ln = La, Pr, and Nd) in Sulfide-Mediated Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.

Project description:Herein, we report the role of surface oxygen vacancies and lanthanide contraction phenomenon on HS- anion adsorption and desorption in the sulfide-mediated photoelectrochemical water splitting of Ln(OH)3 (Ln = La, Pr, and Nd). The Ln(OH)3 were synthesized via a solvothermal route using ethylenediamine as the solvent. The surface defects are characterized by Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses. The photoelectrochemical water-splitting behavior of Ln(OH)3 enriched with surface oxygen vacancies has been examined in a 1 M Na2S solution under illumination conditions. La(OH)3 exhibited a highly stable and saturated current density of ∼26 mA/cm2 at 0.8 V (vs Ag/AgCl). Similarly, the hydroxides of Pr and Nd demonstrated current densities of 18 and 14 mA/cm2, respectively, at 0.8 V (vs Ag/AgCl). A reduction trend in the saturated current densities from La to Nd indicates the lanthanide contraction phenomenon, where the basicity decreases in the same order. The results also demonstrate that the surface adsorption of the HS- anion in the active sites of the surface oxygen vacancies played a vital role in enhancing the photoelectrochemical water-splitting behavior of Ln(OH)3. The stability of Ln(OH)3 was examined after 4 h of chronoamperometry studies at 0.8 V (vs Ag/AgCl) and analyzed using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, Raman, and EPR and XPS analyses. The results show that the Ln(OH)3 exhibited excellent stability by demonstrating their phase purity after photoelectrochemical water splitting. We propose Ln(OH)3 as highly stable photoelectrochemical water-splitting catalysts in highly concentrated sulfide-based electrolytes and anticipate Ln(OH)3 systems to be explored in a major scale for the production of H2 as an ecofriendly process.

Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties of two heterometallic {Ln8Cr4} (Ln = Gd3+ and Tb3+) complexes with one-dimensional wave chain structure.

Project description:Two isomorphic heterometallic 3d-4f cluster-based materials, formulated [Gd8Cr4(IN)18(μ3-O)2(μ3-OH)6(μ4-O)4(H2O)10]·13H2O (1) and [Tb8Cr4(IN)18(μ3-O)2(μ3-OH)6(μ4-O)4(H2O)10]·13H2O (2) (abbreviation: {Ln8Cr4}: Ln = Gd3+ (1); Tb3+ (2); HIN = isonicotinic acid), were achieved by hydro-/solvothermal method through using the ligand HIN. X-ray diffraction analysis illustrates eight lanthanide ions (Ln = Gd3+, Tb3+) and four transition-metal ions (Cr3+) of {Ln8Cr4} were constructed from two classical "drum-like" {Ln4Cr2} structures associated by organic ligands HIN, displaying a one-dimensional wave chain structure, which is rare. The magnetic properties of {Gd8Cr4} were inspected and showed the existence of antiferromagnetic coupling interactions between contiguous metal ions. On top of this, the magnetic entropy change of ΔS m can attain 23.40 J kg-1 K-1 (44.90 mJ cm-3 K-1) at about 3 K and ΔH = 7 T. Besides, fluorescence measurements of {Tb8Cr4} display typical characteristic Tb-based luminescence.

Heterometallic Octanuclear NiII 4LnIII 4 (Ln = Y, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) Complexes Containing NiII 2LnIII 2O4 Distorted Cubane Motifs: Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Properties.

Project description:The reaction of 2-methoxy-6-[{2-(2-hydroxyethylamino)ethylimino}methyl] phenol (LH3) with lanthanide metal salts followed by the addition of nickel acetate allowed isolation of a family of octanuclear complexes, [Ni4Ln4(μ2-OH)2(μ3-OH)4(μ-OOCCH3)8(LH2)4]·(OH)2·xH2O. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of these complexes reveal that their central metallic core consists of two tetranuclear [Ni2Ln2O4] cubane subunits fused together by acetate and hydroxide bridges. The magnetic study of these complexes reveals a ferromagnetic interaction between the LnIII and the NiII center. The magnitude of exchange coupling between the NiII and LnIII center, parametrized from the magnetic data of the Gd analogue, gives J = +0.86 cm-1. The magneto caloric effect, studied for the NiII 4GdIII 4 complex, shows a maximum of magnetic entropy change, -ΔS m = 22.58 J kg-1 K-1 at 3 K for an applied external field of 5 T.

Project description:In this data article, we present the structural and PXRD data of the lanthanide complexes constructed by bis-tridentate ligand tppz (2,3,5,6-tetra-2-pyridinylpyrazine). Detailed structure, luminescence and sensing properties were discussed in "highly luminescent lanthanide complexes constructed by bis-tridentate ligand and as sensor for Et2O" (Zheng et al., 2018). The data includes the structure of Tb-complex, PXRD of Tb-complex, and also detailed structure information listed in Table 1, Table 2, Table 3.

Lanthanide-Ion-Doping Effect on the Morphology and the Structure of NaYF4:Ln3+ Nanoparticles.

Project description:Two series of β-NaYF4:Ln3+ nanoparticles (Ln = La-Nd, Sm-Lu) containing 20 at. % and 40 at. % of Ln3+ with well-defined morphology and size were synthesized via a facile citric-acid-assisted hydrothermal method using rare-earth chlorides as the precursors. The materials were composed from the particles that have a shape of uniform hexagonal prisms with an approximate size of 80-1100 nm. The mean diameter of NaYF4:Ln3+ crystals non-monotonically depended on the lanthanide atomic number and the minimum size was observed for Gd3+-doped materials. At the same time, the unit cell parameters decreased from La to Lu according to XRD data analysis. The diameter-to-length ratio increased from La to Lu in both studied series. The effect of the doping lanthanide(III) ion nature on particle size and shape was explained in terms of crystal growth dynamics. This study reports the correlation between the nanoparticle morphologies and the type and content of doping lanthanide ions. The obtained results shed light on the understanding of intrinsic factors' effect on structural features of the nanocrystalline materials.

Ln2 (SeO3 )2 (SO4 )(H2 O)2 (Ln=Sm, Dy, Yb): A Mixed-Ligand Pathway to New Lanthanide(III) Multifunctional Materials Featuring Nonlinear Optical and Magnetic Anisotropy Properties.

Project description:Bottom-up assembly of optically nonlinear and magnetically anisotropic lanthanide materials involving precisely placed spin carriers and optimized metal-ligand coordination offers a potential route to developing electronic architectures for coherent radiation generation and spin-based technologies, but the chemical design historically has been extremely hard to achieve. To address this, we developed a worthwhile avenue for creating new noncentrosymmetric chiral Ln3+ materials Ln2 (SeO3 )2 (SO4 )(H2 O)2 (Ln=Sm, Dy, Yb) by mixed-ligand design. The materials exhibit phase-matching nonlinear optical responses, elucidating the feasibility of the heteroanionic strategy. Ln2 (SeO3 )2 (SO4 )(H2 O)2 displays paramagnetic property with strong magnetic anisotropy facilitated by large spin-orbit coupling. This study demonstrates a new chemical pathway for creating previously unknown polar chiral magnets with multiple functionalities.

Assisted Self-Assembly to Target Heterometallic Mn-Nd and Mn-Sm SMMs: Synthesis and Magnetic Characterisation of [Mn7 Ln3 (O)4 (OH)4 (mdea)3 (piv)9 (NO3 )3 ] (Ln=Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd)*.

Project description:In an assisted self-assembly approach starting from the [Mn6 O2 (piv)10 (4-Me-py)2 (pivH)2 ] cluster a family of Mn-Ln compounds (Ln=Pr-Yb) was synthesised. The reaction of [Mn6 O2 (piv)10 (4-Me-py)2 (pivH)2 ] (1) with N-methyldiethanolamine (mdeaH2 ) and Ln(NO3 )3 ⋅ 6H2 O in MeCN generally yields two main structure types: for Ln=Tb-Yb a previously reported Mn5 Ln4 motif is obtained, whereas for Ln=Pr-Eu a series of Mn7 Ln3 clusters is obtained. Within this series the GdIII analogue represents a special case because it shows both structural types as well as a third Mn2 Ln2 inverse butterfly motif. Variation in reaction conditions allows access to different structure types across the whole series. This prompts further studies into the reaction mechanism of this cluster assisted self-assembly approach. For the Mn7 Ln3 analogues reported here variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest that antiferromagnetic interactions between the spin carriers are dominant. Compounds incorporating Ln=NdIII (2), SmIII (3) and GdIII (5) display SMM behaviour. The slow relaxation of the magnetisation for these compounds was confirmed by ac measurements above 1.8 K.

Chiroptical spectra of tetrakis (+)-3-heptafluorobutylrylcamphorate Ln(III) complexes with an encapsulated alkali metal ion: solution structures as revealed by chiroptical spectra.

Project description:The preparation of tetrakis((+)-hfbc) lanthanide(III) complexes with an encapsulated alkali metal and ammonium ions M[Ln((+)-hfbc)(4)] (hereafter abbreviated as M-Ln?:?(+)-hfbc, (+)-heptafluorobutyrylcamphorate; M, ammonium or benzyl ammonium ions as well as alkali metal ions) was reported and discussed. The electronic circular dichroism (CD) spectra in the intraligand ?-?* transition of M-Ln were examined in view of the solvent effect. Here, the concentration, alkali metal, and ammonium ion dependences are compared with the solid CD, (5)D(0)?(7)F(0) (Eu(III)) excitation spectra, circularly polarized luminescence, and vibrational circular dichroism. It has been revealed that the dodecahedral eight coordinate DD-8-M-Ln complexes in crystals are equilibrated between the diastereoselectively formed square antiprism eight coordinate SAPR-8-M-Ln and [Ln((+)-hfbc)(3)] in EtOH and CH(3) CN solutions or between the SAPR-8-M-Ln and DD-D(2d) (mmmm)-8-M-Ln complexes in CHCl(3) solution. The observed CD couplets are found to reflect the exciton CD couplets which are useful to determine the four-bladed SAPR-(llll) absolute configuration around the lanthanide(III) ion.
