Physico-Chemical Properties of Magnetic Dicationic Ionic Liquids with Tetrahaloferrate Anions.

ABSTRACT: A series of imidazolium-based symmetrical and asymmetrical dicationic ionic liquids (DcILs) with alkyl spacers of different length and with [FeCl₃ Br]^- as counter ion have been synthesized. The synthesized DcILs are characterized by using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry, along with single-crystal XRD analysis. Physicochemical properties such as solubility, thermal stability and magnetic susceptibility are also measured. These compounds show low melting points, good solubility in water and organic solvents, thermal stability, and paramagnetism. The products of molar susceptibility and temperature (χ_mol ⋅T) for the synthesized DcILs have been found between 4.05 to 4.79 emu mol^-1 K Oe^-1 and effective magnetic moment values have also been determined to be compared to that expected from the spin-only approximation.

Synthesis and investigation of physico-chemical properties of dicationic ionic liquids.

Project description:A series of dicationic ionic liquids (ILs) including [C4(MIM)2][PF6]2, [C5(MIM)2][PF6]2, [C6(MIM)2][PF6]2 and [C4(PYR)2][PF6]2 were synthesized. Their thermal stability and melting points were analysed. It was found that dicationic ILs presented important implications in the design of homogeneous and heterogeneous system with water. A homogeneous system of dicationic ILs with water could be formed at a relatively high temperature and then a heterogeneous system was formed when the solution was cooled to a low temperature. The ILs recovered by altering the temperature were obtained in high percentage yields of [C4(MIM)2][PF6]2 (97.6%), [C5(MIM)2][PF6]2 (97.3%), [C6(MIM)2][PF6]2 (98.0%) and [C4(PYR)2][PF6]2 (94.2%). On the other hand, [C4(MIM)2][PF6]2 and [C5(MIM)2][PF6]2 exhibited good solubility in acetonitrile and acetone. A homogeneous system could be achieved with imidazolium-based ILs with a relatively low amount of water and acetonitrile at room temperature. All of the properties of dicationic ILs have a strong correlation with the nature of dications, the linkage chain and the symmetry of dications. Dicationic ILs may provide a new opportunity for some specific applications in order to enable the effective separation and isolation of products.

Properties of Dicationic Disiloxane Ionic Liquids.

Project description:A number of dicationic ionic liquids with a disiloxane linker between imidazolium cations and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion were synthesized and characterized. Melting points, viscosity, and volatility in a vacuum were measured; the thermal and hydrolytic stability of ionic liquids were also studied. The dependence of the properties on the structure of substituents in the cation of the ionic liquid was demonstrated.

Expanding the Chemical Space of Benzimidazole Dicationic Ionic Liquids.

Project description:Benzimidazole dicationic ionic liquids (BDILs) have not yet been widely explored in spite of their potential. Therefore, two structurally related families of BDILs, paired with either bromide or bistriflimide anions and bearing alkyl spacers ranging from C3 to C6, have been prepared. Their thermal properties have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), while their electrical properties have been assessed by cyclic voltammetry (CV). TG analysis confirmed the higher stability of the bistriflimide BDILs over the bromide BDILs, with minor variation within the two families. Conversely, DSC and CV allowed for ascertaining the role played by the spacer length. In particular, the thermal behavior changed dramatically among the members of the bistriflimide family, and all three possible thermal behavior types of ILs were observed. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry showed different electrochemical window (C3(C1BenzIm)2/2Tf2N < C4(C1BenzIm)2/2Tf2N, C5(C1BenzIm)2/2Tf2N < C6(C1BenzIm)2/2Tf2N) as well as a reduction peak potential, shape, and intensity as a function of the spacer length. The results obtained highlight the benefit of accessing a more structurally diverse pool of compounds offered by dicationic ILs when compared to the parent monocationic ILs. In particular, gains are to be found in the ease of fine-tuning their properties, which translates in facilitating further investigations toward BDILs as designer solvents and catalysts.

A Combined Experimental/Computational Study of Dicationic Ionic Liquids with Bromide and Tungstate Anions.

Project description:A panel of dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) with different rigid xylyl (ortho, meta, para) spacers and different anions (bromide and tungstate) has been synthetised and characterised through different experimental and computational techniques. Differences and analogies between the systems are analysed using information derived from their DFT structures, semiempirical dynamics, thermal behaviour, and catalytic properties versus the well-known reaction of CO2 added to epichlorohydrin. A comparison between the proposed systems and some analogues that present non-rigid spacers shows the key effect displayed by structure rigidity on their characteristics. The results show an interesting correlation between structure, flexibility, properties, and catalytic activity.

Dicationic Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid Coatings on Zirconia Surfaces: Physico-Chemical and Biological Characterization.

Project description:In the present work, dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated as multi-functional coatings on a zirconia (ZrO₂) surface to prevent biofilm formation and enhance the wear performance of zirconia while maintaining the material's compatibility with host cells. ILs containing phenylalanine and methionine were synthesized and deposited on zirconia. Intermolecular interactions driving IL deposition on zirconia were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Anti-biofilm activity and cell compatibility were evaluated in vitro after one and seven days, and wear performance was tested using a pin-on-disk apparatus. ILs were observed to form strong hydrogen bonds with zirconia. IL containing phenylalanine formed a stable film on the surface after one and seven days in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and artificial saliva and showed excellent anti-biofilm properties against Streptococcussalivarius and Streptococcussanguinis. Compatibility with gingival fibroblasts and pre-osteoblasts was maintained, and conditions for growth and differentiation were preserved. A significantly lower coefficient of friction and wear volume loss were observed for IL-coated surfaces as compared to non-coated substrates. Overall, zirconia is an emerging alternative to titanium in dental implants systems, and this study provides additional evidence of the materials' behavior and IL coatings as a potential surface treatment technology for improvement of its properties.

Impact of Anions on the Partition Constant, Self-Diffusion, Thermal Stability, and Toxicity of Dicationic Ionic Liquids.

Project description:Partition constants (KD°), molecular dynamics (T1, T2, and DOSY measurements), thermal stability, and toxicity of dicationic ionic liquids (ILs) were determined. The dicationic ILs derived from 1,n-bis(3-methylimidazolim-1-yl)octane, [BisOct(MIM)2][2X] (in which X = Cl, Br, NO3, SCN, BF4, and NTf2), were evaluated to verify the influence of anion structure on the IL properties. A monocationic IL [Oct(MIM)][Br] was also monitored for comparison. In general, the solubility of the ILs followed the anion free energy of hydration (ΔG°hyd). The thermokinetic and thermodynamic functions of activation of the ILs were determined via thermogravimetric data, and it was observed that polyatomic anions influence the decomposition mechanism of these IL structures. Furthermore, [Oct(MIM)][Br] had a decomposition rate greater than that of the dicationic analogue, and the thermodynamic parameters of activation data corroborate these results. Finally, the dicationic ILs did not indicate toxic effects (LD50 > 40 mM).

15N NMR studies provide insights into physico-chemical properties of room-temperature ionic liquids.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) have gained a lot of attention as alternative solvents in many fields of science in the last two decades. It is known that the type of anion has a significant influence on the macroscopic properties of the IL. To gain insights into the molecular mechanisms responsible for these effects it is important to characterize these systems at the microscopic level. Such information can be obtained from nuclear spin-relaxation studies which for compounds with natural isotope abundance are typically performed using direct 1H or 13C measurements. Here we used direct 15N measurements to characterize spin relaxation of non-protonated nitrogens in imidazolium-based ILs which are liquid at ambient temperature. We report heteronuclear 1H-15N scalar coupling constants (nJHN) and 15N relaxation parameters for non-protonated nitrogens in ten 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([C2C1IM]+)-based ILs containing a broad range of anions. The 15N relaxation rates and steady-state heteronuclear 15N-{1H} NOEs were measured using direct 15N detection at 293.2 K and two magnetic field strengths, 9.4 T and 16.4 T. The experimental data were analyzed to determine hydrodynamic characteristics of ILs and to assess the contributions to 15N relaxation from 15N chemical shift anisotropy and from 1H-15N dipolar interactions with non-bonded protons. We found that the rotational correlation times of the [C2C1IM]+ cation determined from 15N relaxation measurements at room temperature correlate linearly with the macroscopic viscosity of the ILs. Depending on the selected anion, the 15N relaxation characteristics of [C2C1IM]+ differ considerably reflecting the influence of the anion on the physicochemical properties of the IL.

Dicationic ionic liquids as new feeding deterrents.

Project description:AbstractIn this study, new quaternary bis(ammonium) salts with alkyl-1,X-bis(dimethyldecylammonium) cation and saccharinate, acesulfamate, lactate and pyroglutamate anions were synthesized and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Thermal gravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analyses confirmed that all salts were thermally stable and the majority of them exhibited melting points below 100 °C. The physicochemical properties (viscosity, density, refractive index values, and solubility) of the obtained salts were determined for three compounds with lactate anions. All the tested salts have suitable properties which, in practical application, will reduce the losses caused by the most important storage insects. Most of the synthesized ionic liquids had comparable or better deterrent activity than azadirachtin-an alkaloid known as the most active antifeedant.Graphical abstract

Hydrophobic Porous Liquids with Controlled Cavity Size and Physico-Chemical Properties.

Project description:Developing greener hydrometallurgical processes implies offering alternatives to conventional solvents used for liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) of metals. In this context, it is proposed to substitute the organic phase by a hydrophobic silica-based porous liquid (PL). Two different sulfonated hollow silica particles (HSPs) are modified with various polyethoxylated fatty amines (EthAs) forming a canopy that provides both the targeted hydrophobicity and liquefying properties. This study shows that these properties can be tuned by varying the number of ethylene oxide units in the EthA: middle-range molecular weight EthAs allow obtaining a liquid at room temperature, while too short or too long EthA leads to solid particles. Viscosity is also impacted by the density and size of the silica spheres: less viscous PLs are obtained with small low-density spheres, while for larger spheres (c.a. 200 nm) the density has a less significant impact on viscosity. According to this approach, hydrophobic PLs are successfully synthesized. When contacted with an aqueous phase, the most hydrophobic PLs obtained allow a subsequent phase separation. Preliminary extraction tests on three rare earth elements have further shown that functionalization of the PL is necessary to observe metal extraction.

Physicochemical Properties of New Ionic Liquids and Plastic Crystal Based on Huckel Anions.

Project description:There is increasing interest in ionic liquid electrolytes for battery applications due to their potential as safer alternatives to conventional liquid electrolytes. By carefully selecting cations and anions, the physicochemical properties of these salts can be optimised. However, investigation of new cations and anions is still required to achieve the desired electrolyte properties such as high conductivity, electrochemical stability and low corrosivity. Thus, here a new series of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and an organic ionic plastic crystal (OIPC) were synthesized and characterized based on N-ethyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium ([C2mpyr]+) and N-ethyl-N-methyloxazolidinium ([C2moxa]+) cations, paired with 4,5-dicyano-2-(trifluoromethyl)imidazolide ([TDI]-) and 4,5-dicyano-2-(pentafluoroethyl)imidazolide ([PDI]-) anions, forming [C2mpyr][TDI] (OIPC), [C2mpyr][PDI] (IL), [C2moxa][TDI] (IL), and [C2moxa][PDI] (IL). Thermal properties were analysed using DSC and TGA. The plastic phase of the OIPC [C2mpyr][TDI] is wide and spans most electrolyte application temperatures, extending from -40 to 56 °C. All salts exhibit thermal stability above 200 °C. The temperature dependence of the transport properties (viscosity, ionic conductivity, self-diffusion coefficient) were measured and fitted by the Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman (VFT) equation, and the ionicity of the ILs is reported. The electrochemical stability windows of the salts were analysed by CV, and the [C2mpyr]+ cation-based ILs showed the widest window of ~5 V.
