Electrochemical topological transformation of polysiloxanes.

ABSTRACT: Coupling reactions between polymers are an important class of chemical modifications for changing, enhancing, and tuning the properties of polymeric materials. In particular, transformation of polymer topologies based on efficient, facile and less wasted coupling reactions remains a significant challenge. Here, we report coupling reactions based on electrochemical oxidation of 2,4,5-triphenylimidazole into a 2,4,5-triphenylimidazolyl radical and its spontaneous dimerization into hexaarylbiimidazole. Based on this chemistry, electrochemical topological transformation (ETT) and electrochemical chain extension have been realized with siloxane-based oligomers and polymers. Moreover, this approach enables one step ETT of star-shaped poly(dimethyl siloxane)s (PDMSs) into network PDMSs, running in an ionic liquid solvent and requiring no purification steps.

Capabilities of liposomes for topological transformation.

Project description:Dynamic behaviors of liposomes caused by interactions between liposomal membranes and surfactant were studied by direct real-time observation by using high-intensity dark-field microscopy. Solubilization of liposomes by surfactants is thought to be a catastrophic event akin to the explosion of soap bubbles in the air; however, the actual process has not been clarified. We studied this process experimentally and found that liposomes exposed to various surfactants exhibited unusual behavior, namely continuous shrinkage accompanied by intermittent quakes, release of encapsulated liposomes, opening up, and inside-out topological inversion.

Mesoscale martensitic transformation in single crystals of topological defects.

Project description:Liquid-crystal blue phases (BPs) are highly ordered at two levels. Molecules exhibit orientational order at nanometer length scales, while chirality leads to ordered arrays of double-twisted cylinders over micrometer scales. Past studies of polycrystalline BPs were challenged by the existence of grain boundaries between randomly oriented crystalline nanodomains. Here, the nucleation of BPs is controlled with precision by relying on chemically nanopatterned surfaces, leading to macroscopic single-crystal BP specimens where the dynamics of mesocrystal formation can be directly observed. Theory and experiments show that transitions between two BPs having a different network structure proceed through local reorganization of the crystalline array, without diffusion of the double-twisted cylinders. In solid crystals, martensitic transformations between crystal structures involve the concerted motion of a few atoms, without diffusion. The transformation between BPs, where crystal features arise in the submicron regime, is found to be martensitic in nature when one considers the collective behavior of the double-twist cylinders. Single-crystal BPs are shown to offer fertile grounds for the study of directed crystal nucleation and the controlled growth of soft matter.

Unconventional transformation of spin Dirac phase across a topological quantum phase transition.

Project description:The topology of a topological material can be encoded in its surface states. These surface states can only be removed by a bulk topological quantum phase transition into a trivial phase. Here we use photoemission spectroscopy to image the formation of protected surface states in a topological insulator as we chemically tune the system through a topological transition. Surprisingly, we discover an exotic spin-momentum locked, gapped surface state in the trivial phase that shares many important properties with the actual topological surface state in anticipation of the change of topology. Using a spin-resolved measurement, we show that apart from a surface bandgap these states develop spin textures similar to the topological surface states well before the transition. Our results offer a general paradigm for understanding how surface states in topological phases arise from a quantum phase transition and are suggestive for the future realization of Weyl arcs, condensed matter supersymmetry and other fascinating phenomena in the vicinity of a quantum criticality.

Electrochemical-Induced Ring Transformation of Cyclic α-(ortho-Iodophenyl)-β-oxoesters.

Project description:Cyclic α-(ortho-iodophenyl)-β-oxoesters were converted in a ring-expanding transformation to furnish benzannulated cycloalkanone carboxylic esters. The reaction sequence started by electrochemical reduction of the iodoarene moiety. In a mechanistic rationale, the resulting carbanionic species was adding to the carbonyl group under formation of a strained, tricyclic benzocyclobutene intermediate, which underwent carbon-carbon bond cleavage and rearrangement of the carbon skeleton by retro-aldol reaction. The scope of the reaction sequence was investigated by converting cyclic oxoesters with different ring sizes yielding benzocycloheptanone, -nonanone and -decanone derivatives in moderate to good yields. Furthermore, acyclic starting materials and cyclic compounds carrying additional substituents on the iodophenyl ring were submitted to this reaction sequence. The starting materials for this transformation are straightforwardly obtained by conversion of β-oxoesters with phenyliodobis(trifluoroacetate).

Polysiloxanes Grafted with Mono(alkenyl)Silsesquioxanes-Particular Concept for Their Connection.

Project description:Herein, a facile and efficient synthetic route to unique hybrid materials containing polysiloxanes and mono(alkyl)silsesquioxanes as their pendant modifiers (T8@PS) was demonstrated. The idea of this work was to apply the hydrosilylation reaction as a tool for the efficient and selective attachment of mono(alkenyl)substituted silsesquioxanes (differing in the alkenyl chain length, from -vinyl to -dec-9-enyl and types of inert groups iBu, Ph at the inorganic core) onto two polysiloxanes containing various amount of Si-H units. The synthetic protocol, determined and confirmed by FT-IR in situ and NMR analyses, was optimized to ensure complete Si-H consumption along with the avoidance of side-products. A series of 20 new compounds with high yields and complete β-addition selectivity was obtained and characterized by spectroscopic methods.

Synergetic binary organocatalyzed ring opening polymerization for the precision synthesis of polysiloxanes.

Project description:Organocatalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) is a versatile method for synthesizing well-defined polymers with controlled molecular weights, dispersities, and nonlinear macromolecular architectures. Despite spectacular advances in organocatalytic ROP, precision synthesis of polysiloxanes remains challenging due to the mismatch in polarity between highly polar initiators and nonpolar monomers and polymers and the difficulty in suppressing the formation of scrambling products via transetherification reactions during ROP of cyclic siloxanes. Here, we describe a binary organocatalytic ROP (BOROP) of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) employing organic bases as catalysts and (thio)ureas as cocatalysts. The BOROP of D3 using triazabicyclodecene (TBD) and (thio)ureas generates polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMSs) with narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.1). Despite the similar basicities of TBD and 1,8-bis(tetramethylguanidino)naphthalene (TMGN), which is known as a proton sponge, a unitary organocatalytic system using TMGN was inactive for the ROP of D3. When the TMGN was paired with acidic urea, the BOROP of D3 yielded PDMSs with narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.1). Data suggest that the synergetic effect of TMGN and urea is results in an unprecedented activation-deactivation equilibrium between dormant and propagating species. The benefits of the present BOROP system are demonstrated by the formation of PDMS elastomers with more uniform network structures that are highly stretchy and have excellent mechanical properties.

Topological transformation of microbial proteins into iron single-atom sites for selective hydrogen peroxide electrosynthesis.

Project description:The emergence of single-atom catalysts offers exciting prospects for the green production of hydrogen peroxide; however, their optimal local structure and the underlying structure-activity relationships remain unclear. Here we show trace Fe, up to 278 mg/kg and derived from microbial protein, serve as precursors to synthesize a variety of Fe single-atom catalysts containing FeN5-xOx (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) moieties through controlled pyrolysis. These moieties resemble the structural features of nonheme Fe-dependent enzymes while being effectively confined on a microbe-derived, electrically conductive carbon support, enabling high-current density electrolysis. A comparative analysis involving catalysts derived from eleven representative microbes reveals that the presence of 0.05 wt% Fe single-atom sites leads to a significant 26% increase in hydrogen peroxide selectivity. Remarkably, the optimal catalyst featuring FeN3O2 sites demonstrates a selectivity of up to 93.7% and generates hydrogen peroxide in a flow cell at an impressive rate of 29.6 mol g-1 h-1 at 200 mA cm-2. This work achieves structural fine-tuning of metal single-atom sites at the trace level and provides topological insights into single-atom catalyst design to achieve cost-efficient hydrogen peroxide production.

Topological transformation of synthetic ferromagnetic skyrmions: thermal assisted switching of helicity by spin-orbit torque.

Project description:This study demonstrates the controllable switching of skyrmion helicity using spin-orbit torque, enhanced by thermal effects. Electric current pulses applied to a [Pt/Co]3/Ru/[Co/Pt]3 multilayer stripe drive skyrmions in a direction opposite to the current flow. Continuous pulsing results in an unexpected reversal of skyrmion motion. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that skyrmions in the upper and lower ferromagnetic layers exhibit distinct helicities, forming a hybrid synthetic skyrmion. The helicity switch of this hybrid structure accounts for the motion reversal. This study introduces innovative helicity control methods, advancing spintronic device applications, including data storage and quantum computing based on skyrmion helicity.

Electrochemical DNA detection via exonuclease and target-catalyzed transformation of surface-bound probes.

Project description:We report a single-step, single-reagent, label-free, isothermal electrochemical DNA sensor based on the phenomenon of target recycling. The sensor exploits strand-specific exonuclease activity to achieve the selective enzymatic digestion of target/probe duplexes. This results in a permanent change in the probe structure that yields an increased faradaic current and liberates the intact target molecule to interact with additional detection probes to achieve further signal amplification. Using this architecture, we achieve an improved detection limit in comparison to hybridization-based sensors without amplification. We also demonstrate a 16-fold signal amplification factor at low target concentrations. Combined with the advantages of electrochemical detection and its ready integration with microelectronics, our approach may represent a promising path toward direct DNA detection at the point of care.

Topological transformation of liposomes by a membrane-affecting domain of recombinant human erythropoietin.

Project description:Recombinant human erythropoietin (rh-Epo) is well accepted as a hematopoietic drug, but many other pleiotropic properties are currently under investigation. Rh-Epo-induced receptor-mediated signal transductions are accompanied with membrane dynamic processes, which facilitate the activation of individual pathways. However, its direct effect on membrane dynamics is still unknown. In the present study, we have proven the capability of rh-Epo to associate to and transform artificial lipid membranes. Association studies using neutral, negatively, and positively charged liposomes with the native as well as modified rh-Epo were performed and analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. By these studies, we demonstrated that rh-Epo has the capability to transform negatively charged unilamellar vesicles into so-called disc-like micelles. Rh-Epo association to the negatively charged head groups via lysine and arginine initiates this transformation. At physiological temperatures, conformational changes within the rh-Epo structure expose a defined amino-acid sequence, which is able to induce the formation of discoid membrane structures. Enzymatic digestion, analysis, and isolation of related peptides by rp-HPLC and characterization by MS/MS enabled the identification of the membrane-affecting domain of rh-Epo (MAD-E) that represents the exposed helix B of rh-Epo. Finally, association studies performed with these peptides confirmed that the MAD-E is responsible for the formation of disc-like micelles. Since this helix B of rh-Epo has recently been supposed to be involved in the activation of neuroprotective pathways, we believe that the membrane-transforming capacity of rh-Epo participates in the proliferative activity of rh-Epo.
