Effects of ligand tuning and core doping of atomically precise copper nanoclusters on CO₂ electroreduction selectivity.

ABSTRACT: Atomically precise nanoclusters (NCs) provide opportunities for correlating the structure and electrocatalytic properties at atomic level. Herein, we report the single-atom doping effect and ligand effect on CO₂ electroreduction (eCO₂RR) by comparing monogold-doped Au₁Cu₂₄ and homocopper Cu₂₅ NCs protected by triphenylphosphine or/and tris(4-fluorophenyl)phosphine. Catalytic results revealed that the electronic distribution of Cu₂₅ NCs is enormously contracted by doping Au atoms, entitling it to exhibit the unique inhibition of hydrogen evolution reaction. And the inductive effect of ligand strongly favors the formation of formate in eCO₂RR. Overall, this work will provide guidance for the rational design of the copper-based catalysts in the eCO₂RR.

The role of metal accessibility on carbon dioxide electroreduction in atomically precise nanoclusters.

Project description:Atomically precise nanoclusters (NCs) can be designed with high faradaic efficiency for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO (FECO) and provide useful model systems for studying the metal-catalysed CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). While size-dependent trends are commonly evoked, the effect of NC size on catalytic activity is often convoluted by other factors such as changes to surface structure, ligand density, and electronic structure, which makes it challenging to establish rigorous structure-property relationships. Herein, we report a detailed investigation of a series of NCs [AunAg46-n(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)24Cl4(PPh3)2, Au24Ag20(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)24Cl2, and Au43(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)20/Au42Ag1(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)20] with similar sizes and core structures but different ligand packing densities to investigate how the number of accessible metal sites impacts CO2RR activity and selectivity. We develop a simple method to determine the number of CO2-accessible sites for a given NC then use this to probe relationships between surface accessibility and CO2RR performance for atomically precise NC catalysts. Specifically, the NCs with the highest number of accessible metal sites [Au43(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)20 and Au42Ag1(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)20] feature a FECO of >90% at -0.57 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), while NCs with lower numbers of accessible metal sites have a reduced FECO. In addition, CO2RR studies performed on other Au-alkynyl NCs that span a wider range of sizes further support the relationship between FECO and the number of accessible metal sites, regardless of NC size. This work establishes a generalizable approach to evaluating the potential of atomically precise NCs for electrocatalysis.

Delayed luminescence guided enhanced circularly polarized emission in atomically precise copper nanoclusters.

Project description:Metal nanoclusters, owing to their intriguing optical properties, have captivated research interest over the years. Of special interest have been chiral nanoclusters that display optical activity in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. While the ground state chiral properties of metal nanoclusters have been reasonably well studied, of late research focus has shifted attention to their excited state chiral investigations. Herein, we report the synthesis and chiral investigations of a pair of enantiomerically pure copper nanoclusters that exhibit intense optical activity, both in their ground and excited states. The synthesis of nanoclusters using l- and d-isomers of the chiral ligand led to the formation of metal clusters that displayed mirror image circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signals. Structural validation using single crystal XRD, powder XRD and XPS in conjunction with chiroptical and computational analysis helped to develop a structure-property correlation that is unique to such clusters. Investigations on the mechanism of photoluminescence revealed that the system exhibits long excited state lifetimes. A combination of delayed luminescence and chirality resulted in circularly polarized delayed luminescence, a phenomenon that is rather uncommon to the field of metal clusters. The chiral emissive properties could be successfully demonstrated in free-standing polymeric films highlighting their potential for use in the field of data encryption, security tags and polarized light emitting devices. Moreover, the fundamental understanding of the mechanism of excited state chirality in copper clusters opens avenues for the exploration of similar effects in a variety of other clusters.

Interaction of Atomically Precise Thiolated Copper Nanoclusters with Proteins: A Comparative Study.

Project description:A facile synthesis of glutathione-stabilized copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) is carried out in H2O/ tetrahydrofuran medium. The photophysical and morphological studies performed with as-synthesized CuNCs revealed the formation of green-emissive, stable, and smaller nanoclusters. The precise composition of these as-synthesized CuNCs was predicted with the aid of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry analysis as Cu12(SG)9. Furthermore, the systematic studies of the interaction of synthesized CuNCs with three plasmatic proteins, namely, bovine serum albumin (BSA), lysozyme (Lys), and hemoglobin (Hb) have been performed by using a series of spectroscopic studies. The conformational changes in these proteins upon interacting with CuNCs and their binding stoichiometries have been investigated from the combination of UV-visible and steady-state fluorescence measurements. The changes in the microenvironment of proteins caused by CuNCs were investigated by circular dichroism spectroscopy. Among these three proteins, BSA and Lys had a minor effect on the luminescence of CuNCs, which makes them suitable candidates for biological applications. There are no drastic changes in the microenvironment of NCs as well as proteins because of the possibilities of weak electrostatic and H-bonding interactions of CuNCs with BSA and Lys. The feasibility of strong metallophic interaction between the Fe2+ present in the heme group of Hb and Cu(I) or -S atoms present in the CuNCs brings considerable changes in the photophysical activity of CuNCs and their interactions with Hb. The functional groups on NCs as well as active amino acid residues present in proteins play a crucial role in determining their interactions. This work shed a piece of knowledge on designing NCs for specific biological applications.

Nanohybrids of atomically precise metal nanoclusters.

Project description:Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) with molecule-like structures are emerging nanomaterials with fascinating chemical and physical properties. Photoluminescence (PL), catalysis, sensing, etc., are some of the most intriguing and promising properties of NCs, making the metal NCs potentially beneficial in different applications. However, long-term instability under ambient conditions is often considered the primary barrier to translational research in the relevant application fields. Creating nanohybrids between such atomically precise NCs and other stable nanomaterials (0, 1, 2, or 3D) can help expand their applicability. Many such recently reported nanohybrids have gained promising attention as a new class of materials in the application field, exhibiting better stability and exciting properties of interest. This perspective highlights such nanohybrids and briefly explains their exciting properties. These hybrids are categorized based on the interactions between the NCs and other materials, such as metal-ligand covalent interactions, hydrogen-bonding, host-guest, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions during the formation of nanohybrids. This perspective will also capture some of the new possibilities with such nanohybrids.

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters combine with MXene towards solar CO2 conversion.

Project description:Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) have been deemed a new generation of photosensitizers for light harvesting on account of their quantum confinement effect, peculiar atom-stacking mode, and enriched catalytic active sites. Nonetheless, to date, precise charge modulation over metal NCs has still been challenging considering their ultra-short carrier lifetime and poor stability. In this work, we conceptually demonstrate the integration of metal NCs with MXene in transition metal chalcogenide (TMC) photosystems via a progressive, exquisite, and elegant interface design to trigger tunable, precise and high-efficiency charge motion over metal NCs, stimulating a directional carrier transport pathway. In this customized ternary heterostructured photosystem, metal NCs function as light-harvesting antennas, MXene serves as a terminal electron reservoir, and the TMC substrate provides suitable energy level alignment for retracting photocarriers of metal NCs, giving rise to a spatial cascade charge transport route and markedly boosting charge separation efficiency. The interface configuration and energy level alignment engineering synergistically contribute to the considerably enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2-to-CO reduction performance of the metal NCs/TMCs/MXene heterostructure. The intermediate active species during the photocatalytic CO2 reduction are unambiguously determined, based on which the photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated. Our work will provide an inspiring idea to bridge the gap between atomically precise metal NCs and MXene in terms of controllable charge migration for solar-to-fuel conversion.

A database of low-energy atomically precise nanoclusters.

Project description:The chemical and structural properties of atomically precise nanoclusters are of great interest in numerous applications, but the structures of the clusters can be computationally expensive to predict. In this work, we present the largest database of cluster structures and properties determined using ab-initio methods to date. We report the methodologies used to discover low-energy clusters as well as the energies, relaxed structures, and physical properties (such as relative stability, HOMO-LUMO gap among others) for 63,015 clusters across 55 elements. We have identified clusters for 593 out of 1595 cluster systems (element-size pairs) explored by literature that have energies lower than those reported in literature by at least 1 meV/atom. We have also identified clusters for 1320 systems for which we were unable to find previous low-energy structures in the literature. Patterns in the data reveal insights into the chemical and structural relationships among the elements at the nanoscale. We describe how the database can be accessed for future studies and the development of nanocluster-based technologies.

Atomically precise nanoclusters predominantly seed gold nanoparticle syntheses.

Project description:Seed-mediated synthesis strategies, in which small gold nanoparticle precursors are added to a growth solution to initiate heterogeneous nucleation, are among the most prevalent, simple, and productive methodologies for generating well-defined colloidal anisotropic nanostructures. However, the size, structure, and chemical properties of the seeds remain poorly understood, which partially explains the lack of mechanistic understanding of many particle growth reactions. Here, we identify the majority component in the seed solution as an atomically precise gold nanocluster, consisting of a 32-atom Au core with 8 halide ligands and 12 neutral ligands constituting a bound ion pair between a halide and the cationic surfactant: Au32X8[AQA+•X-]12 (X = Cl, Br; AQA = alkyl quaternary ammonium). Ligand exchange is dynamic and versatile, occurring on the order of minutes and allowing for the formation of 48 distinct Au32 clusters with AQAX (alkyl quaternary ammonium halide) ligands. Anisotropic nanoparticle syntheses seeded with solutions enriched in Au32X8[AQA+•X-]12 show narrower size distributions and fewer impurity particle shapes, indicating the importance of this cluster as a precursor to the growth of well-defined nanostructures.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Glasses of Atomically Precise Nanoclusters.

Project description:Organic-inorganic atomically precise nanoclusters provide indispensable building blocks for establishing structure-property links in hybrid condensed matter. However, robust glasses of ligand-protected nanocluster solids have yet to be demonstrated. Herein, we show [Cu4I4(PR3)4] cubane nanoclusters coordinated by phosphine ligands (PR3) form robust melt-quenched glasses in air with reversible crystal-liquid-glass transitions. Protective phosphine ligands critically influence the glass formation mechanism, modulating the glasses' physical properties. A hybrid glass utilizing ethyldiphenylphosphine-based nanoclusters, [Cu4I4(PPh2Et)4], exhibits superb optical properties, including >90% transmission in both visible and near-infrared wavelengths, negligible self-absorption, near-unity quantum yield, and high light yield. Experimental and theoretical analyses demonstrate the structural integrity of the [Cu4I4(PPh2Et)4] nanocluster, i.e., iodine-bridged tetranuclear cubane, has been fully preserved in the glass state. The strong internanocluster CH-π interactions found in the [Cu4I4(PPh2Et)4] glass and subsequently reduced structural vibration account for its enhanced luminescence properties. Moreover, this highly transparent glass enables performant X-ray imaging and low-loss waveguiding in fibers drawn above the glass transition. The discovery of "nanocluster glass" opens avenues for unraveling glass formation mechanisms and designing novel luminescent glasses of well-defined building blocks for advanced photonics.

Atomically Precise, Thiolated Copper-Hydride Nanoclusters as Single-Site Hydrogenation Catalysts for Ketones in Mild Conditions.

Project description:Copper-hydrides are known catalysts for several technologically important reactions such as hydrogenation of CO, hydroamination of alkenes and alkynes, and chemoselective hydrogenation of unsaturated ketones to unsaturated alcohols. Stabilizing copper-based particles by ligand chemistry to nanometer scale is an appealing route to make active catalysts with optimized material economy; however, it has been long believed that the ligand-metal interface, particularly if sulfur-containing thiols are used as stabilizing agent, may poison the catalyst. We report here a discovery of an ambient-stable thiolate-protected copper-hydride nanocluster [Cu25H10(SPhCl2)18]3- that readily catalyzes hydrogenation of ketones to alcohols in mild conditions. A full experimental and theoretical characterization of its atomic and electronic structure shows that the 10 hydrides are instrumental for the stability of the nanocluster and are in an active role being continuously consumed and replenished in the hydrogenation reaction. Density functional theory computations suggest, backed up by the experimental evidence, that the hydrogenation takes place only around a single site of the 10 hydride locations, rendering the [Cu25H10(SPhCl2)18]3- one of the first nanocatalysts whose structure and catalytic functions are characterized fully to atomic precision. Understanding of a working catalyst at the atomistic level helps to optimize its properties and provides fundamental insights into the controversial issue of how a stable, ligand-passivated, metal-containing nanocluster can be at the same time an active catalyst.
