Crystal structure of a new europium(III) compound based on thio-phene-acrylic acid.

ABSTRACT: A europium(III) coordination compound based on thio-phene-acrylic acid (Htpa), tri-aqua-tris-[3-(thio-phen-2-yl)prop-2-enoato-κ² O,O']europium(III)-3-(thio-phen-2-yl)prop-2-enoic acid (1/3), [Eu(C₇H₅O₂S)₃(H₂O)₃]·3C₇H₆O₂S or [Eu(tpa)₃(H₂O)₃]·3(Htpa) (1), where tpa is the conjugate base of Htpa, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Compound 1 crystallizes in the trigonal space group R3. The structure of 1 consists of a discrete mol-ecular complex [Eu(tpa)₃(H₂O)₃] species and the Htpa mol-ecule. In the crystal, the two components are involved in O-H⋯O [ring motif R ₂ ²(8)] and C-H⋯π hydrogen-bonding inter-actions. These inter-actions were further investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis, which showed high contributions of H⋯H, H⋯C/C⋯H and H⋯O/O⋯H contacts to the total Hirshfeld surfaces.

Project description:The mixed-metal sulfate, KEu(SO4)2·H2O, has been obtained as a new polymorph using hydro-thermal conditions. The crystal structure is isotypic with NaCe(SO4)2·H2O and shows a three-dimensional connectivity of the tetra-hedral sulfate units with EuIII and KI ions. Tricapped trigonal-prismatic EuO9 units and square-anti-prismatic KO8 units link the SO4 tetra-hedra, building the three-dimensional structure. Topological analysis reveals the existence of two nodes with 6- and 10-connected nets. The compound was previously reported [Kazmierczak & Höppe (2010 ▸). J. Solid State Chem.183, 2087-2094] in the monoclinic space group P21/c with a similar structural connectivity and coordination environments to the present compound.

Crystal structure of a new hybrid compound based on an iodido-plumbate(II) anionic motif.

Project description:Crystals of the one-dimensional organic-inorganic lead iodide-based compound catena-poly[bis-(piperazine-1,4-diium) [[tetra-iodido-plumbate(II)]-μ-iodido] iodide monohydrate], (C4N2H12)2[PbI5]I·H2O, were obtained by slow evaporation at room temperature of a solution containing lead iodide and piperazine in a 1:2 molar ratio. Inorganic lead iodide chains, organic (C4N2H12)(2+) cations, water mol-ecules of crystallization and isolated I(-) anions are connected through N-H⋯·I, N-H⋯OW and OW-H⋯I hydrogen-bond inter-actions. Zigzag chains of corner-sharing [PbI6](4-) octa-hedra with composition [PbI4/1I2/2](3-) running parallel to the a axis are present in the structure packing.

Hydro-thermal synthesis and crystal structure of a new lanthanum(III) coordination polymer with fumaric acid.

Project description:The title compound, poly[di-aqua-tris-(μ4-but-2-enedioato)(μ2-but-2-enedioic acid)dilanthanum(III)], [La2(C4H2O4)3(C4H4O4)(H2O)2] n , was synthesized by the reaction of lanthanum chloride penta-hydrate with fumaric acid under hydro-thermal conditions. The asymmetric unit comprises an La(III) cation, one and a half fumarate dianions (L (2-)), one a half-mol-ecule of fumaric acid (H2 L) and one coordinated water mol-ecule. Each La(III) cation has the same nine-coordinate environment and is surrounded by eight O atoms from seven distinct fumarate moieties, including one proton-ated fumarate unit and one water mol-ecule in a distorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic environment. The LaO8(H2O) polyhedra centres are edge-shared through three carboxyl-ate bridges of the fumarate ligand, forming chains in three dimensions to construct the MOF. The crystal structure is stabilized by O-H⋯O hydrogen-bond inter-actions between the coordin-ated water mol-ecule and the carboxyl-ate O atoms, and also between oxygen atoms of fumaric acid.

Crystal structure of a new hybrid anti-mony-halide-based compound for possible non-linear optical applications.

Project description:The hybrid title compound, catena-poly[[[bis-(1,4-diazo-niabi-cyclo-[2.2.2]octa-ne) [tetra-achlorido-anti-monate(III)]-μ-chlorido-[tetra-chlorido-anti-monate(III)]-μ-chlorido]] monohydrate], {(C6H14N2)2[Sb2Cl10]·H2O} n , is self-assembled into alternating organic and inorganic layers parallel to the bc plane. The anionic inorganic layer consists of infinite zigzag chains of corner-sharing [SbCl6](3-) octa-hedra running along the b axis. The organic part is made up of 1,4-diazo-niabi-cyclo-[2.2.2]octane dications (dabcoH2 (2+)). The water mol-ecules in the structure connect inorganic and organic layers. Hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between the ammonium groups, water mol-ecules and Cl atoms ensure the structure cohesion.

Europium (III) as a Circularly Polarized Luminescence Probe of DNA Structure.

Project description:We report as a proof-of-concept the first application of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measured with a Raman optical activity (ROA) spectrometer to differentiate several DNA structures without need of sensitizing complexes. The ROA/CPL approach provides sufficiently high CPL intensity to use hydrated Eu3+ ions, thus avoiding DNA structural changes associated with binding of sensitizers and overcoming the sensitizer quenching issue. We showed that deoxyguanosine monophosphate (dGMP), single- and double-stranded DNA provide different CPL spectra, which could be used for their discrimination. Our results demonstrate that ROA/CPL method is a promising approach to measure CPL spectra of complex biomolecules when the use of sensitizers is not possible. The method can be extended to other biomolecules, such as proteins, lipids, sugars, etc.

Silver europium(III) polyphosphate.

Project description:Europium(III) silver polyphosphate, AgEu(PO(3))(4), was prepared by the flux method. The atomic arrangement is built up by infinite (PO(3))(n) chains (periodicity of 4) extending along the c axis. These chains are joined to each other by EuO(8) dodeca-hedra. The Ag(+) cations are located in the voids of this arrangement and are surrounded by five oxygen atoms in a distorted [4+1] coordination.

Modulation of a coordination structure in a europium(iii)-based metallo-supramolecular polymer for high proton conduction.

Project description:Developing high proton conducting solid materials is significant in the field of fuel cells. A europium(iii)-based metallo-supramolecular polymer with uncoordinated carboxylic acids (PolyEu-H) was successfully synthesized by modifying the synthesis conditions. The proton conductivity was enhanced with increasing the relative humidity (RH) from 30 to 95% RH. PolyEu-H showed about 104 times higher proton conductivity than the polymer with coordinated carboxylic acids (PolyEu) and about 400 times higher than the polymer without carboxylic acids (PolyEu-2). The proton conductivity of PolyEu-H reached 4.45 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 95% RH and 25 °C and 5.6 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 75 °C. The activation energy, E a was ultralow (0.04 eV), which indicates proton conduction based on the Grotthuss mechanism. The results indicate that efficient proton conduction occurs through proton channels formed by moisture in PolyEu-H.

Structure-Dependent Photoluminescence of Europium(III) Coordination Oligomeric Silsesquioxane: Synthesis and Mechanism.

Project description:The coordination environment of Eu3+ is a crucial factor in the optical performance of the complex. Herein, a new kind of oligomeric silsesquioxane was employed to improve the coordination environment of central ions, the luminescence intensity of which was greatly enhanced with an efficient emission peak at 619 nm. More importantly, the photoluminescent properties of the product will be altered because of the formation of the Si-O-Si structure. The relevant mechanism has also been investigated and proposed by a series of characterization analyses. Additionally, the fluorescence lifetime, intrinsic quantum yield, and energy transfer efficiency were calculated. In addition, the observed trend of Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters was used to justify the coordination environment of Eu3+ ions. The experimental results reveal that the sol-gel reaction of the ligands can effectively promote intramolecular energy transfer. In addition, we introduced four theory modules of ligands (LSi, LSi-1, LSi-2, and LSi-3) with certain rules of formation of Si-O-Si, and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) were used to explore their excited electron transfer process and their electronic absorption spectra, combined with Marcus theory. The calculated results show that the sol-gel reaction will induce the separation of the distribution of excited holes and electrons, leading to an efficient charge-transfer (CT) process. The predictable results were in good accordance with the experimental findings. Consequently, the sol-gel reaction occurring among ligands will be attributed to an efficient CT process, leading to a strong luminescence intensity, as observed experimentally.

Project description:In the title centrosymmetric complex, [Eu(2)(C(4)H(5)O(2))(6)(H(2)O)(4)]·2C(4)H(6)O(2), the unique Eu(III) cation is coordinated by seven carb-oxylate O atoms from four methacrylate ligands and two water mol-ecules in a slightly disorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic environment. Two Eu(III) ions are bridged by carboxyl-ate groups, forming a dinuclear complex. The formula unit also contains two mol-ecules of methacrylic acid. In the crystal structure, mol-ecules are linked via inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming one-dimensional chains propagating along the b-axis direction.
