Active zones consist of protein scaffolds that are tightly attached to the presynaptic plasma membrane. They dock and prime synaptic vesicles, couple them to voltage-gated Ca<sup>2+</sup> channels, and direct neurotransmitter release toward postsynaptic receptor domains.
