High-Sensitivity Liquid Dielectric Characterization Differential Sensor by 1-Bit Coding DGS.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents two devices to detect the liquid dielectric characterization. The differential method was used to enhance the robustness and reduce tolerance. A basic sensor based on defected ground structure (DGS) was designed and the optimization for the squares of the DGS via adaptive genetic algorithm was applied to enhance the performance of the microwave sensor, which was shown by the difference of the two resonant frequencies. Furthermore, the electric field distribution was enhanced. Glass microcapillary tubes were used to hold samples to provide an environment of non-invasive. The optimized device exhibited the sensitivity of 0.076, which is more than 1.52 times than the basic structure. It could be considered a sensitive and robust sensor with quick response time for liquid dielectric characterization.

A differential dielectric affinity glucose sensor.

Project description:A continuous glucose monitor with a differential dielectric sensor implanted within the subcutaneous tissue that determines the glucose concentration in the interstitial fluid is presented. The device, created using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, consists of sensing and reference modules that are identical in design and placed in close proximity. Each module contains a microchamber housing a pair of capacitive electrodes residing on the device substrate and embedded in a suspended, perforated polymer diaphragm. The microchambers, enclosed in semi-permeable membranes, are filled with either a polymer solution that has specific affinity to glucose or a glucose-insensitive reference solution. To accurately determine the glucose concentration, changes in the permittivity of the sensing and the reference solutions induced by changes in glucose concentration are measured differentially. In vitro characterization demonstrated the sensor was capable of measuring glucose concentrations from 0 to 500 mg dL(-1) with resolution and accuracy of ~1.7 μg dL(-1) and ~1.74 mg dL(-1), respectively. In addition, device drift was reduced to 1.4% (uncontrolled environment) and 11% (5 °C of temperature variation) of that from non-differential measurements, indicating significant stability improvements. Preliminary animal testing demonstrated that the differential sensor accurately tracks glucose concentration in blood. This sensor can potentially be used clinically as a subcutaneously implanted continuous monitoring device in diabetic patients.

A Sensitivity-Optimized Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensor with Cylindrical Ladder Microstructural Dielectric Layers.

Project description:Flexible capacitive pressure sensors have attracted extensive attention due to their dynamic response and good sensing capability for static and small pressures. Using microstructural dielectric layers is an effective method for improving performance. However, the current state of microstructure design is primarily focused on basic shapes and is largely limited by simulation results; there is still a great deal of potential for further innovation and improvement. This paper innovatively proposes to increase the ladder structure based on the basic microstructures, for example, the long micro-ridge ladder, the cuboid ladder, and cylindrical ladder microstructures. By comparing 9 kinds of microstructures including ladder structure through finite element simulation, it is found that the sensor with a cylindrical ladder microstructure dielectric layer has the highest sensitivity. The dielectric layers with various microstructures are obtained by 3D printed molds, and the sensor with cylindrical ladder microstructure dielectric layer has the sensitivity of 0.12 kPa-1, which is about 3.9 times higher than that without microstructure. The flexible pressure sensor developed by us boasts sensitivity-optimized and operational stability, making it an ideal solution for monitoring rainfall frequency in real time.

SensiMix: Sensitivity-Aware 8-bit index & 1-bit value mixed precision quantization for BERT compression.

Project description:Given a pre-trained BERT, how can we compress it to a fast and lightweight one while maintaining its accuracy? Pre-training language model, such as BERT, is effective for improving the performance of natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, heavy models like BERT have problems of large memory cost and long inference time. In this paper, we propose SensiMix (Sensitivity-Aware Mixed Precision Quantization), a novel quantization-based BERT compression method that considers the sensitivity of different modules of BERT. SensiMix effectively applies 8-bit index quantization and 1-bit value quantization to the sensitive and insensitive parts of BERT, maximizing the compression rate while minimizing the accuracy drop. We also propose three novel 1-bit training methods to minimize the accuracy drop: Absolute Binary Weight Regularization, Prioritized Training, and Inverse Layer-wise Fine-tuning. Moreover, for fast inference, we apply FP16 general matrix multiplication (GEMM) and XNOR-Count GEMM for 8-bit and 1-bit quantization parts of the model, respectively. Experiments on four GLUE downstream tasks show that SensiMix compresses the original BERT model to an equally effective but lightweight one, reducing the model size by a factor of 8× and shrinking the inference time by around 80% without noticeable accuracy drop.

Liquid Metal Patterned Stretchable and Soft Capacitive Sensor with Enhanced Dielectric Property Enabled by Graphite Nanofiber Fillers.

Project description:In this work, we introduce liquid metal patterned stretchable and soft capacitive sensor with enhanced dielectric properties enabled by graphite nanofiber (GNF) fillers dispersed in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. We oxidized gallium-based liquid metal that exhibited excellent wetting behavior on the surface of the composites to enable patterning of the electrodes by a facile stencil printing. The fluidic behavior of the liquid metal electrode and modulated dielectric properties of the composite (k = 6.41 ± 0.092@6 wt % at 1 kHz) was utilized to fabricate stretchable and soft capacitive sensor with ability to distinguish various hand motions.

High sensitivity carbon nanotube based electrochemiluminescence sensor array.

Project description:Ink jet printed carbon nanotube forest arrays capable of detecting picomolar concentrations of immunoglobulin G (IgG) using electrochemiluminescence (ECL) are described. Patterned arrays of vertically aligned single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) forests were printed on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. Capture anti-IgG antibodies were then coupled through peptide bond formation to acidic functional groups on the vertical nanotubes. IgG immunoassays were performed using silica nano particles (Si NP) functionalized with the ECL luminophore [Ru(bpy)(2)PICH(2)](2+)], and IgG labelled G1.5 acid terminated PAMAM dendrimers. PAMAM is poly(amido amine), bpy is 2,2'-bipyridyl and PICH(2) is (2-(4-carboxyphenyl)imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline). The carboxyl terminal of [Ru(bpy)(2)PICH(2)](2+) (fluorescence lifetime ? 682±5 ns) dye was covalently coupled to amine groups on the 800 nm diameter silica spheres in order to produce significant ECL enhancement in the presence of sodium oxalate as co-reactant in PBS at pH 7.2). Significantly, this SWCNT-based sensor array shows a wide linear dynamic range for IgG coated spheres (10(6) to 10(12) spheres) corresponding to IgG concentrations between 20 pM and 300 nM. A detection limit of 1.1±0.1 pM IgG is obtained under optimal conditions.

High-Sensitivity RFID Sensor for Structural Health Monitoring.

Project description:Structural health monitoring (SHM) is crucial for ensuring operational safety in applications like pipelines, tanks, aircraft, ships, and vehicles. Traditional embedded sensors have limitations due to expense and potential structural damage. A novel technology using radio frequency identification devices (RFID) offers wireless transmission of highly sensitive strain measurement data. The system features a thin, flexible sensor based on an inductance-capacitance (LC) circuit with a parallel-plate capacitance sensing unit. By incorporating tailored cracks in the capacitor electrodes, the sensor's capacitor electrodes become highly piezoresistive, modifying electromagnetic wave penetration. This unconventional change in capacitance shifts the resonance frequency, resulting in a wireless strain sensor with a gauge factor of 50 for strains under 1%. The frequency shift is passively detected through an external readout system using simple frequency sweeping. This wire-free, power-free design allows easy integration into composites without compromising structural integrity. Experimental results demonstrate the cracked wireless strain sensor's ability to detect small strains within composites. This technology offers a cost-effective, non-destructive solution for accurate structural health monitoring.

Non-Hermitian Topolectrical Circuit Sensor with High Sensitivity.

Project description:Electronic sensors play important roles in various applications, such as industry and environmental monitoring, biomedical sample ingredient analysis, wireless networks and so on. However, the sensitivity and robustness of current schemes are often limited by the low quality-factors of resonators and fabrication disorders. Hence, exploring new mechanisms of the electronic sensor with a high-level sensitivity and a strong robustness is of great significance. Here, a new way to design electronic sensors with superior performances based on exotic properties of non-Hermitian topological physics is proposed. Owing to the extreme boundary-sensitivity of non-Hermitian topological zero modes, the frequency shift induced by boundary perturbations can show an exponential growth trend with respect to the size of non-Hermitian topolectrical circuit sensors. Moreover, such an exponential growth sensitivity is also robust against disorders of circuit elements. Using designed non-Hermitian topolectrical circuit sensors, the ultrasensitive identification of the distance, rotation angle, and liquid level is further experimentally verified with the designed capacitive devices. The proposed non-Hermitian topolectrical circuit sensors can possess a wide range of applications in ultrasensitive environmental monitoring and show an exciting prospect for next-generation sensing technologies.

Numerical Sensitivity Analysis for Dielectric Characterization of Biological Samples by Open-Ended Probe Technique.

Project description:Dielectric characterization of biological tissues has become a fundamental aspect of the design of medical treatments based on electromagnetic energy delivery and their pre-treatment planning. Among several measuring techniques proposed in the literature, broadband and minimally-invasive open-ended probe measurements are best-suited for biological tissues. However, several challenges related to measurement accuracy arise when dealing with biological tissues in both ex vivo and in vivo scenarios such as very constrained set-ups in terms of limited sample size and probe positioning. By means of the Finite Integration Technique in the CST Studio Suite® software, the numerical accuracy of the reconstruction of the complex permittivity of a high water-content tissue such as liver and a low water-content tissue such as fat is evaluated for different sample dimensions, different location of the probe, and considering the influence of the background environment. It is found that for high water-content tissues, the insertion depth of the probe into the sample is the most critical parameter on the accuracy of the reconstruction. Whereas when low water-content tissues are measured, the probe could be simply placed in contact with the surface of the sample but a deeper and wider sample is required to mitigate biasing effects from the background environment. The numerical analysis proves to be a valid tool to assess the suitability of a measurement set-up for a target accuracy threshold.

High sensitivity guided-mode-resonance optical sensor employing phase detection.

Project description:We report an ultra-sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor employing phase detection in a guided mode resonance (GMR) structure. By incorporating the GMR structure in to a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, we measured the phase of GMR signal by calculating the amount of fringe shift. Since the phase of GMR signal varies rapidly around the resonance wavelength, the interference fringe pattern it forms with the reference signal becomes very sensitive to the surrounding RI change. The sensitivity comes out to be 0.608π phase shift per 10-4 RI change in water medium which is more than 100 times higher than the other reported GMR based phase detection method. In our setup, we can achieve a minimum phase shift of (1.94 × 10-3) π that corresponds to a RI change of 3.43 × 10-7, outperforming any of reported optical sensors and making it useful to detect RI changes in gaseous medium as well. We have developed a theoretical model to numerically estimate the phase shift of the GMR signal that predicts the experimental results very well. Our phase detection method comes out to be much more sensitive than the conventional GMR sensors based on wavelength or angle resolved scanning methods.

Effect of bulky anions on the liquid-liquid phase transition in phosphonium ionic liquids: Ambient and high-pressure dielectric studies.

Project description:Although the first-order liquid-liquid phase transition (LLT) has been reported to exist in various systems (i.e., phosphorus, silicon, water, triphenyl phosphite, etc.), it is still one of the most challenging problems in the field of physical science. Recently, we found that this phenomenon occurs in the family of trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium [P666,14]+ based ionic liquids (ILs) with different anions (Wojnarowska et al in Nat Commun 13:1342, 2022). To understand the molecular structure-property relationships governing LLT, herein, we examine ion dynamics of two other quaternary phosphonium ILs containing long alkyl chains in cation and anion. We found that IL with the anion containing branched -O-(CH2)5-CH3 side chains does not reveal any signs of LLT, while IL with shorter alkyl chains in the anion brings a hidden LLT, i.e., it overlaps with the liquid-glass transition. Ambient pressure dielectric and viscosity measurements revealed a peculiar behavior of ion dynamics near Tg for IL with hidden LLT. Moreover, high-pressure studies have shown that IL with hidden LLT has relatively strong pressure sensitivity compared to the one without first-order phase transition. At the same time, the former exposes the inflection point indicating the concave-convex character of logτσ(P) dependences.
