Project description:Binary single-atom catalysts (BSACs) have demonstrated fascinating activities compared to single atom catalysts (SACs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Notably, Fe SACs is one of the most promising ORR electrocatalysts, and further revealing the synergistic effects between Fe and other 3d transition metals (M) for FeM BSACs are very important to enhance bifunctional performance. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are first adapted to demonstrate the role of various transition metals on the bifunctional activity of Fe sites, and a notable volcano relationship is established through the generally accepted adsorption free energy that ΔG* OH for ORR, and ΔG* O -ΔG* OH for OER, respectively. Further, ten of the atomically dispersed FeM anchored on nitrogen-carbon support (FeM-NC) are successfully synthesized with typical atomic dispersion by a facile movable type printing method. The experimental data confirms the bifunctional activity diversity of FeM-NC between the early- and late- transition metals, agrees very well with the DFT results. More importantly, the optimal FeCu-NC shows the expected performance with high ORR and OER activity, thereby, the assembled rechargeable zinc-air battery delivers a high power density of 231 mW cm-2 , and an impressive stability that can be stably operated over 300 h.

Project description:We developed a laboratory-scale model to improve our understanding and capacity to assess the biological risks of genetically engineered bacteria and their genetic elements in the natural environment. Our hypothetical scenario concerns an industrial bioreactor failure resulting in the introduction of genetically engineered bacteria to a downstream municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWWTP). As the first step towards developing a model for this scenario, we sampled microbial communities from the aeration basin of a MWWTP at three seasonal time points. Having established a baseline for community composition, we investigated how the community changed when propagated in the laboratory, including cell culture media conditions that could provide selective pressure in future studies. Specifically, using PhyloChip 16S rRNA gene-targeting microarrays, we compared the compositions of sampled communities to those of inoculates propagated in the laboratory in simulated wastewater conditionally amended with various carbon sources (glucose, chloroacetate, D-threonine) or the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C2mim]Cl). Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were predominant in aeration basin and laboratory-cultured populations. Laboratory-cultured populations were enriched in Gammaproteobacteria. Enterobacteriaceae and Aeromonadaceae were enriched by glucose, Pseudomonadaceae by chloroacetate and D-threonine, and Burkholderiaceae by high (50 mM) concentrations of chloroacetate. Microbial populations cultured with chloroacetate and D-threonine were more similar to sampled populations than thoes cultured with glucose or [C2mim]Cl. Although observed relative richness in operational taxonomic units was lower for laboratory cultures than for sampled populations, both flask and reactor systems cultured phylogenetically diverse communities. These results importantly provide a foundation for laboratory models of industrial bioreactor failure scenarios.

Project description:Sm-promoted FeMn catalysts were prepared by the co-precipitation method and characterized by N2 adsorption, XRD, CO-TPD, H2-TPD, CO2-TPD, H2-TPR, XPS and MES. It was found that compared with the un-promoted catalyst, when Sm was added at a proper content, the catalyst showed a larger BET surface area and promoted the formation of iron particles with a smaller size. The presence of Sm could increase the surface charge density of iron, which enhanced the Fe-C bond and promoted the stability and amount of CO dissociated adsorption, as confirmed by XPS and CO-TPD. Furthermore, according to MES, Sm could promote the formation of Fe5C2, which was the active phase of FTS. In addition, Sm could also enhance the basicity of the catalysts and suppress the H2 adsorption capacity, which inhibited the hydrogenation reaction and the conversion of olefins to paraffins, as verified by the results of CO2-TPD and H2-TPD. According to the FTS performance results, compared with the observations for the un-promoted catalysts, when the molar ratio of Sm to Fe was 1%, the CO conversion increased from 63.4% to 70.4%, the sum of light olefins in the product distribution increased from 26.6% to 32.6, and the ratio of olefins to paraffins increased to 4.18 from 4.09.

Project description:A leading method for hydrogen production that is free of carbon oxides is catalytic methane decomposition. In this research, Fe and Fe-Ni supported catalysts prepared by the wet impregnation method were used in methane decomposition. The effects of doping the parent support (ZrO2) with La2O3 and WO3 were studied. It was discovered that the support doped with La2O3 gave the best performance in terms of CH4 conversion, H2 yield, and stability at the test condition, 800°C and 4,000-ml h-1 g-1 cat. space velocity. The addition of Ni significantly improved the performance of all the monometallic catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), temperature-programmed reduction/oxidation (TPR/TPO), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and microscopy (SEM and Raman) techniques. Phases of the different forms of Fe were identified by XRD. BET showed a drastic decline in the specific surface area of the catalysts with respect to the supports. TPR profiles revealed a progressive change in the valency of Fe in its combined form to the zero valence-free metal. The La2O3-promoted support gave the best performance and maintained good stability during the time on stream.

Project description:Solvent selection is a pressing challenge in developing efficient and selective liquid phase catalytic processes, as predictive understanding of the solvent effect remains lacking. In this work, an attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy technique is developed to quantitatively measure adsorption isotherms on porous materials in solvent and decouple the thermodynamic contributions of van der Waals interactions within zeolite pore walls from those of pore-phase proton transfer. While both the pore diameter and the solvent identity dramatically impact the confinement (adsorption) step, the solvent identity plays a dominant role in proton-transfer. Combined computational and experimental investigations show increasingly favorable pore-phase proton transfer to pyridine in the order: water < acetonitrile < 1,4 - dioxane. Equilibrium methods unaffected by mass transfer limitations are outlined for quantitatively estimating fundamental thermodynamic values using statistical thermodynamics.

Project description:In recent years, the non-petroleum production of light olefins has been the research focus of Fischer-Tropsch olefin synthesis (FTO). Iron-based catalysts have attracted much attention because of their low price, high catalytic activity, and wide temperature range. In this paper, traditional modification, hydrophobic modification, and amphiphobic modification of the catalyst are summarized and analyzed. It was found that traditional modification (changing the pore size and surface pH of the catalyst) will reduce the dispersion of Fe, change the active center of the catalyst, and improve the selectivity of light olefins (for example, SiO2: 32%). However, compared with functional methods, these traditional methods lead to poor stability and high carbon dioxide selectivity (for example, SiO2: 34%). Hydrophobic modification can inhibit the adsorption and retention of water molecules on the catalyst and reduce the local water pressure near the iron species in the nuclear layer, thus inhibiting the further formation of CO2 (for example, SiO2: 5%) of the WGSR. Amphiphobic modification can not only inhibit the WGSR, but also reduce the steric hindrance of the catalyst, increase the diffusion rate of olefins, and inhibit the reabsorption of olefins. Follow-up research should focus on these issues.

Project description:Recent advances in 3D printing have enabled the manufacture of porous electrodes which cannot be machined using traditional methods. With micron-scale precision, the pore structure of an electrode can now be designed for optimal energy efficiency, and a 3D printed electrode is not limited to a single uniform porosity. As these electrodes scale in size, however, the total number of possible pore designs can be intractable; choosing an appropriate pore distribution manually can be a complex task. To address this challenge, we adopt an inverse design approach. Using physics-based models, the electrode structure is optimized to minimize power losses in a flow reactor. The computer-generated structure is then printed and benchmarked against homogeneous porosity electrodes. We show how an optimized electrode decreases the power requirements by 16% compared to the best-case homogeneous porosity. Future work could apply this approach to flow batteries, electrolyzers, and fuel cells to accelerate their design and implementation.

Project description:Several structured catalytic reactors for the direct synthesis of the DME reaction are compared with regard to catalyst hold-up, thermal conductivity, and volumetric productivity. Adherent and homogeneous catalyst layers were obtained by washcoating independent of the substrates' shape and alloy. Moreover, the substrate nature (FeCrAl, brass, or aluminum) and shape (parallel cell monoliths and open foams) do not modify in great extent the CO conversion values and selectivity to the different compounds. This is reasonable since the catalytic phases are the same in all cases and the existence of mass and heat-transfer limitations was negligible in the experimental conditions studied. Structuring by washcoating exhibits less catalyst inventory per reactor volume than a packed-bed monolith. However, completely packing a monolith with powder catalyst produced a decrease in the CO conversion of around 25% with respect to the coated monolith. Moreover, by means of using the obtained highest catalyst hold-up by washcoating (0.33 gcat/cm3) in a brass monolith and by increasing the reaction temperature, the temperature profiles are only slightly affected. This allows to work in an almost isothermal reactor with a volumetric productivity up to 0.20 LDME/h·cm3 at 573 K.

Project description:Structured light projection provides a promising approach to achieving fast and non-contact three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The resolution is a crucial index that represents security and accuracy in applications such as face recognition and robot vision. It depends on the density of dots in the projection. However, further improving the density of dots in the current system must be at the cost of speed or volume. Here, an all-dielectric ultra-thin metasurface is designed and fabricated to project a multi-wavelength dot array. The density of dots is improved because projected dots with different wavelengths fill the gaps with each other. The experimental results demonstrate that the multi-wavelength projection improves the resolution of 3D imaging. Furthermore, the multi-wavelength system is beneficial to measuring a surface with varying colors. The approach has the potential to achieve a new generation of high-resolution systems for tiny fluctuations and colorful 3D imaging in dark environments.
